Good things about Hooligan's: excellent location, plenty of great drink options, lots of specials to save me some $, enjoyable, trivia-style activities. Not-so-good things: limited seating, super-gigantor but mediocre food menu, confusing bathrooms, staff who regularly seem annoyed. This was another spot to visit in my son's quest to try all burger joints in Milwaukee. This place calls itself a "super bar" and I'm not sure exactly what that is supposed to mean. It's not that big of a place, but they do have seating upstairs which is where we ended up. Our server was very frazzled and pretty much slammed down our glasses, pitcher of water and silverware and ran off. We ordered wings, burgers, a brisket sandwich and a wrap. Everything was good, but the fries sucked. It was time for an oil change if you know what I mean. Our server showed up occasionally and she was very harried. The place was kind of busy when we arrived, but it started emptying out and even then she was not happy. We had a table of really LOUD talkers near us and that kind of hampered our fun. We weren't sure if they were wasted and that's why they were talking so loud or if they wanted everyone to know they were in town from the Chicago area. I was and I wasn't yelling about it! At first it was kind of funny and we were mocking them. If they would have noticed, maybe they would have shut up, but who knows. You are always at risk of this when you eat in a bar, so there you have it. This place is in a really busy spot near a Whole Foods. The parking is VERY scarce and I had to circle the block a few times before going to the Whole Foods garage where they had FREE parking. You drive through a very nice area near the lake to get here, so that was fun, but there wasn't enough here to make us return for food. Maybe the liquor, I don't know. read more

I have been to Hooligan's many times and every time I go there I like it a little bit more. I visited Hooligan's most recently last weekend. It was kinda miserable outside and I wanted a comfy, warm, bar to park it for the rest of the night. This was the perfect place. I rolled in around 6pm and ordered a beer and some food. They have a very extensive menu with lots of different "bar food" options. If you need some deliciously fattening comfort food, this is your spot. The nachos fit the mood of the evening and my friend and I ate them up. The waitress was very attentive and continued to bring rounds as needed, but not in an annoying way. I love this place because 6 hours later as I left and started my walk home I was prepared to face the weather with a warm, fully belly. If you are looking for a cozy place to comfortably relax with friends this is a great option on the East Side. read more

I've been coming here for years and have always had good experiences. Great food with a huge menu that offers something for everyone. Huge beer list, full bar. Lots of TVs but not always a great place to watch the game because of obstructed views. Trivia all the time using hand held game counsel but live trivia on Sunday and Tuesday nights. My only disappointment happened on my last visit. Our server brought is the wrong shots - no complaint on our end - we still drank them. We ordered an appetizer that took WAY longer than it should have. Before we paid, our server said that they took the appetizer off of the bill due to the shot mix-up. Seems to me they should have taken off the round of shots instead (if that was really the problem they were trying to fix). Just seemed a little weird to take the less expensive of the two off the bill. read more

Love the atmosphere of this bar! A good spot to come with friends because I haven't seen it so packed that you can't have a conversation. I'll occasionally sit at the bar here, eat happy hour wings, and play the F out of some trivia. I'll name myself something like "foxygrandma" and wish the bartenders were a little friendlier. I'll glance over to the "kitchen" and remind myself not to apply for the "line cook needed immediately at Hooligan's" want ads. I'll drink a pint of some really good beer when I really wanted a Sprite to wash down a kind of mushy but satisfying catfish sandwich. I'll be glad I'm not at the BBC. read more

My first visit at hooligans should have broke me, but quite the contrary. I ordered 2 classic fish fries, and was fattened to my heart's delight. Praise to Tessa, my attendant server. I complained about their Terrible sides more than once and she made no problem out of it and served me courtously. Yes, their sides, potato slaw, american slaw, even frys were inedible. But, their fish dishes shined through the disappointment. Each was perfectly cooked, healthy, and hella tasty! I recommend this fish fry to anyone in Wisconsin, looking to fill up on good, hearty food. read more

If i liked noise, this place would be 4 stars but it was so noisy and man at nearby table felt a need to share his conversation with the whole place. Guess that is problem in sports bar. Hooligan's calls itself a "Super Bar". How do they justify that claim? Here's how I justify it. I used to be a cool East-sider in the early 90's. I graduated from UWM in 1993 and spent the next year "living my dream." I was in a cool band and we spent many Saturday nights and Sunday mornings here. I became addicted to the Hooli Burger and have never been the same since. I gained 50 pounds and my cholesterol number resembles Robin Yount's lifetime batting average. Hooli's introduced me to micro-brews. In the early 90's, Sam Adams was about as exotic as things got on North Avenue. I had my first Anchor Steam here, and most likely my first Guinness. Back then, Hooligan's was barely a step above being a dive bar. There was the cook who used to dress like a boy scout, and there was always that guy at the end of the bar who looked like Keith Richards. At some point a few years later, that changed. A complete remodel removed most of the dank, and a stretch of the bar counter that used to double as a stage for the occasional live music night. My first gig with one of my bands, "Daddy Needs A Drink", was on that makeshift stage. About the only thing left are the tables along the wall and the tap handle collections. That, and a great bar food menu. Hooli burger, baked potato soup, rouben rolls. You can still wash it down with an Anchor Steam. I loved Hooligan's 20 years ago when I was a broke-as-a-joke Eastside musician and Hooligan's was a danky-dive bar. I still love it today now that it caters to a "less grungy crowd" and has an upstairs dining room. The more things change, the more they stay the same. read more

Came here for dinner with friends. We put the bill on one tab for the servers convenience. The server did not mention gratuity would be included. After I left an additional 18% tip, the server Kelsey did not mention that gratuity had already been included. I can't rember the last time I went to a restaurant in the US and gratuity was automatically added without the server telling me. Sure, our server messed up two of my team members' orders (but he admitted the mistake was his and apologized), and sure, they still allow smoking in there (so stupid), but I couldn't think of a more fun place to play trivia and watch the Bucks win a playoff game. read more

I went to Hooligan's on a Sunday afternoon to eat lunch and watch the Brewer's game. I have been to Hooligan's many times in the past, and I can always count on a good meal. Hooligan's has some of the best "bar food" I have ever had. One reason why I like the food is because they offer "healthier" options. All of the burgers can be substituted with a buffalo burger, garden burger or walnut burger. This past Sunday I had a mushroom and Swiss burger and substituted the meat patty with a garden burger. The garden burger had a lot of flavor and I really enjoyed it. My boyfriend had the patty melt and substituted the meat patty with a buffalo burger. He realllllly enjoyed the buffalo burger. When the wife says "I just want a casual meal and a beer", I know what she's saying is "I want to go to Hooligan's". The thing I love most about Hooligan's is that it's consistent. The boy burger made with a veggie patty, a side of blue cheese cole slaw and big ol' dunkel weiss is my go to meal and it never disappoints. It's a casual sports bar that's great for watching the game, playing trivia or grabbing a bite to eat on the patio during the summer. Fabulous service from a fabulous bartender, Jamie! She makes possibly the best bloodies in town! She also gives great menu recommendations like the bleu buffalo mac and cheese!! Yum yum! Decent bar food, nice outdoor seating area to people watch, and a good atmosphere. Our server seemed slightly annoyed to be waiting on us and didn't really know the beer selection/menu. Maybe she was new. She warmed up towards the end but definitely had an attitude early on while we were ordering. It was as if she was about to be cut to go home at 3pm in the afternoon and then a bunch of tables got seated in her section outside and she had to stay. It was noticeable. read more

We wandered about until deciding this placed looked as nice as any around the area. The patio is quite nice, while the placement at the intersection lends to some fun people watching. The staff was very friendly, not even making me feel silly when I asked where the restroom was after walking right past it. Food was great bar food; I recommend the salmon sandwich. I've dined in and drank here a number of times and have always have had a great time, great food, and great service. Most recently I stopped in for a late lunch. My friend and I split the Buffalo Blue Burger w/Bison and Spinach & Artichoke Tuna sandwich and both were very good! I liked that their menu offers a number of unique items something different from the run of the mill bar food. Overall, anytime I am in town I enjoy stopping here whether its for drinks or food, and look forward to my next visit. read more

There are few places better to watch a game in Milwaukee. Whenever I am in town this is one of the first places I go, because they have awesome food and a huge selection of tap beer. When I was in college a couple of friends and I worked 2nd shift at this really crappy job, the only good thing about working there was we could leave whenever we got done with our work. We would work really hard to get out of work early and then drive as fast as possible to Hooligan's for some super cheap bar food. After that we would head out for the daily bar specials at the millions of bar with in stumbling distance. read more

Hooligan's is a great Eastside spot, especially if there are sports on or if you're with a group of friends. The inside has a great wooden bar and seating for dinner on both levels. It is very warm and welcoming - you can always count on people being there. I love snowy days at Hooligan's because it feels so warm. In the summer, their patio is a great place to grab a drink and a burger. It is perfect for people watching, because of its location on the corner of North and Farwell. They do have a couple vegetarian options, but they took my two faves off the menu (bummer.) The staff is great - many of them have been there for a very long time. food-wise this place gets a 5. every bite of everything i tasted here was excellent. we started off with the waffle cheese fries, they were not skimpy in any way shape or form. amazing! almost as good as outback's aussie cheese fries and that is a huge claim for me. for my main i had an ostrich burger with some sort of feta/chipotle mayo spread that was out of this world, i honestly wanted to just eat it with a spoon. the burger would have been good without it, but i am glad someone invited it to the party... since i had fries with the app i went for their potato salad as my side... it was good, a bit mayo-e, but i added some grey poupon and ate the sh!t out of it... i left full and please... i will go back. read more

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Met a friend today for a late lunch and ordered the Hooliburger. It was perfectly prepared and dangerously tasty. Sat and the bar and the service there was great; I don't think they ever allowed my iced tea to empty. It was a little maddening having a bunch of schnockered college kids swarming around me as part of a pub crawl, but the bartenders and servers handled the scrum well. read more

I'll admit, I'm a regular. They've got a great beer selection and I've never been unhappy with my food. In fact, I'm often surprised at how good it is when I try something new. Steak sandwich, chicken sandwich, wings, shrimp tacos, quesadilla, salad, wrap, nachos made with french fries, burger, and the list goes on! The servers are always speedy and friendly. I just love this place in summers. The atmosphere here is great and I love to sit outside with a pitcher of Blue moon beer and Black bean burger. Not one of the kiddie places on North Avenue, so that's nice. A VERY NICE PLACE TO GRAB LIUNCH!
