The Playa Vista Hopdoddy location is our go-to spot for dinner whenever we catch a flick at the Cinemark next door. The staff makes us feel like family. They're genuinely friendly, attentive, and they even come table-side with their handhelds so we can skip the long lines when we want to order another round. Their rewards app is also one of the best I've ever used. We visit so often we've reached Legendary Status, which comes with fun perks like a free Burger of the Month and the occasional bonus like free fries bowl or a birthday shake! Speaking of the Burger of the Month, it's usually creative and worth trying. They're not all hits, but when they are... wow. I still dream about the Breakfast Burger they had this summer. Slap an egg on a burger and I'm all in! My husband is a big fan of their goblets of beer and I enjoy the occasional boozy shake (decadent and dangerous in the best way.) My only wish? A nice Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc by the glass to round out the drink list. It's the only reason I've rated them 4 stars instead of 5! This was my first time at this location in particular and I will say parking can be a little of a hassle unless you get lucky. The restaurant itself is spacious and clean and they even have a patio area if you want to sit outside! I ordered online and when I arrived 12 minutes later my food was ready and waiting for me. Hopdoddy is a decent chain, but this location is very bad. Go to The Point in El Segundo/Manhattan Beach for a better experience. I got food poisoning here on my most recent visit, so I won't be going back. Even before that, my experiences were poor -- possibly even worse than getting food poisoning. On one visit, a woman at the counter gave me attitude when I ordered an ahi burger. When it arrived nearly raw and almost swimming, I politely asked if they could cook it a bit more -- not remake it or refund me, just cook it. She was very rude and said, "I told you it's going to be cooked rare." I've been a pescatarian for half my life, I'm a fisherman, and I know when the food in front of me isn't cooked. I will say everyone else was nice: the younger staff were polite and acknowledged the situation. I generally either get the turkey burger or beef burger, and they have an awesome GF bun option which I appreciate and I rotate between sweet potato fries and the regular fries. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was the brussel sprout leaves (I missed the leaves part and would have preferred full Brussels), but otherwise delicious food (in my regular takeout rotation), customer service has always been super friendly and very accommodating, and the location in Runway Playa Vista is a great spot with lots of cute shops and restaurants. What I didn't expect but should have these days, is how much smaller the burgers were at about the same price point. You have chipotle and regular ketchup for dipping them with. Chipotle's kind of meh too.. a bit too strong and acidic for us. The ginger and hibiscus lemonade are yummy but on the sugary side so we watered them down a bit. Servers who brought our food seemed like they didn't really want to be there. The location and the option for beer on tap are probably what many like about it. But the vibe just seemed blah overall. This is a once in a long while place vs. a must have. We have been here multiple times and it is the best burger and social hangout place in PV! We ordered Mother Nature (pasture raised beef with running egg) and Cadillac Wagyu (with bacon). I've since updated them +1 star to 3 stars overall. After re-consideration, their normal burgers are quite good, although expensive for a single burger, even though the happy hour sliders are still poor, basic, and decent. However, similar to many restaurants as they continue to grow or time passes by, Hopdoddy has fallen dramatically. Let me explain...first, they used to have an amazing happy hour where the entire food menu was half off for a short time given how good of a value that is. I believe that used to be 3-4pm. The stipulation was that you only can take advantage of this at the bar. Unfortunately, it seems this is no longer the deal. Now, it is a measley single food option of sliders that reduces from ~$14 to ~$7. Take a look at my photo on how sad of a sliders and this is the only option now. I would not pay ~$14 for these poor sliders. They are far smaller than it may seem in the photo as well. Why is it that restaurants need to lose the values and what they were known for in the beginning of time. The burger patty itself was cooked to perfection. Super juicy medium rare. However, the red pepper salsa sitting on the bottom bun made the entire bun extremely soggy. It was also too sweet for the burger. The panela cheese was too thick and heavy for the burger. The meat/cheese ratio was extremely unbalanced. The chimichurri was a nice touch. I also enjoyed the truffle Parmesan fries. Overall I rate the burger 6/10. This rating is purely based on the combination of ingredients in the burger, not the quality.
