Houndstooth coffee is the result of when hipsters and coffee make magic happen. I like talking to baristas because they're interesting. The baristas it houndstooth are friendly, funny, and they make incredible espresso drinks. I visit houndstooth twice a day when I'm in Austin on business. I can't think of a better place to take 1015 minutes drink some Greg coffee and relax in the nice space they have its grade for people watching looking out the window killing time or reading a book. I always like to explore the coffee scene in new places and Houndstooth came up as one of the options for Austin. The coffee here is from a Tweed, which is a Texas-based roaster, and it is SUPER good. I really enjoyed my pour over. The coffee was a medium roast and not took dark. The baristas were also incredibly friendly and helpful (a huge plus when the baristas aren't snobby). It makes the experience that much better. The shop itself is very sleek and modern with a ton of natural light. It feels spacious due to the large windows and tall ceilings. The furniture is not necessary super comfy, but I didn't have a problem sticking around for a few hours to do some work while enjoying my coffee. The store wasn't super crowded, but I was here around 2PM on a weekday, so this may be different during a weekend. Definitely would go back here for more coffee if I weren't planning on trying to hit up other coffee shops during my stay in Austin. read more

Easily the best coffee I had during my stay in Austin. I went with a group so we ordered quite a few drinks. Mazagran- this was a cold brew with lime and coconut milk and what I believe was a blueberry. This drink was my favorite with flavors that I wouldn't have thought would work together blending seamlessly The other special we tried was the nine iron which is lavender lemonade with cold brew. If anyone is looking for something slightly tart while still keeping that deep coffee taste, this is definitely a must try. The lemonade is a fresh store made lemonade with very little sugar added- tasted very crisp and fresh in this drink. The chocolate latte was good- kind of tasted like a dark hot chocolate to me, I just wish it had a little bit more coffee flavor. I absolutely LOVE coffee and I love real coffee. None of that artificial pumpkin spice frap for me. If you enjoy really good coffee and drink lattes or cold brew, then this is the place for you. I ordered a latte and my boyfriend got an iced caffe Americano. Both were amazing! If you're looking for the location, it is attached to the Frost Bank in Downtown Austin, but there is plenty of room inside to grab a seat, sip on coffee, and browse your computer. Loved my experience at Houndstooth! I was in town and working remote, and I ended up working from here every morning/afternoon. They have great hours, for 9-5 workers to stop by with ease. What a great find! I was staying at a hotel nearby and found a few coffee options. This was by far, my favorite. Tyler and other employees were so welcoming and able to tell me about the coffee options they were serving. I was there for a week and every morning I'd walk in and they'd offer two espresso options. I enjoyed 1 cappuccino of each offering to compare. (Options are fun, and did bring a bag back home). Their knowledge of coffee, origin, and preparation were superb. Easily telling me tasting notes, grams of coffee in, extract cycles, etc. I love this stuff. It made my morning addiction that much more enjoyable. After dining at a nearby restaurant, we dropped by here for an after dinner coffee before hitting the road back to Dallas. The location is tucked into a downtown building next to Frost Bank, and can be a little tricky to find. The decor is modern, open, with lots of glass, yet it retains an inviting feel. The menu is very brief, featuring the usual coffee shop standards. We each chose the "sweet latte", after confirming with the barista that it featured only a single pump of simple syrup; we wanted a little sweet, not a sugar bomb. The drinks were delivered, and were great. I'd have hoped for a little more body, as they were ordered breve, but the half and half was clearly quite fresh, and the espresso had a very good flavor with no trace of bitterness. I'll also note that we walked past two Starbucks locations on the way here; I'd advise doing the same, if you want a truly nice espresso drink read more

My Central Perk in Austin! I love independent coffee shops that serve good coffee and tea. Whenever I'm in an unfamiliar city, I like to do a Yelp search for coffeeshops. When I was in Austin, one of the first hits was Houndstooth Coffee. I came here on a Wednesday morning around 9am. There was a bit of a line but nothing too bad. I can only imagine what it's like first thing in the morning though. The barista was very friendly, asking each person their plans for the day. I took a seat at the coffee bar after ordering a genmaicha tea. The barista measured out the perfect amount of tea leaves before steeping, timing the whole orchestrated event perfectly. My tea came in their signature cup and a teapot steeped with more tea. Whatever tea supplier they use is truly fantastic. My genmaicha was wonderful. It was the ideal, relaxing morning after a busy couple of days running an event. Houndstooth serves espresso beverages, tea, and even beer and wine. They've got brewed coffees like Japanese iced coffee, cold brew, and the traditional drip. They serve Tweed coffee, a roaster from Dallas. Houndstooth also like experiment with coffee brews and create concoctions like coffee julep. This is a great place for good coffee and/or tea, friendly service, and free Wi-Fi. I stop at Houndstooth coffee whenever I'm in Austin. I love their cappuccinos, the atmosphere is lovely, and they have taco deli tacos which I love! I've always said a taco is the perfect breakfast because it is small, hot, and savory. They have several taco options - if you aren't already familiar with the whole Austin breakfast taco thing, know that they are very small so you probably want more than one.
