I ate here with a party of 7. We were looking for somewhere new that would please several different palates, and this place had great reviews. It ended up being a very good choice! The menu is not huge, but has a variety of options. They have soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. I ordered the quinoa and sweet potato pancakes, which I found out later are vegan. The food came out and was beautifully presented, especially what I ordered. It had pickled beets on top which made the dish very colorful. It was extremely delicious and offered a full culinary experience. I have never eaten anything like it before. It will definitely be a meal I will remember for a long time. We had the most remarkable experience at House. Supremely attentive, nuanced service. The kind of service that only exists in white-glove exclusive restaurants. Service that shows you what happens when the server does this as a profession, rather than a job. What a treat. Faithful Dining Companion and I ducked into House on a rainy afternoon for lunch. We admit this was chosen over some other Media restaurants because there was a parking spot right in front. Yeah, we can be shallow. It was nice to come into a bright, clean, very beige-and-bare-wood with some cool accents place on a dreary day. This place looks like Crate & Barrel at the Beach. Faithful Dining Companion got the Shiva salad, I ordered a bowl of chili and the King Khan salad. Many happy noises were made about the Shiva salad, and the chili was all kinds of yum. I didn't care for the King Khan salad, though it wasn't the fault of the restaurant. It was I am certain magnificent for what it was, plenty of meat, creamy sauce served on a bed of greens. It's just that the greens themselves had a bitter finish, something the haute cuisine set enjoy but I do not. Now here's the amazing part. Our server, Jose, noticed that I was picking around and at the salad. I did NOT fuss (FDC can back me on this). I didn't even mention to FDC that I did not enjoy the bitter greens. He just, well, observed. He came, asked me if I was enjoying the meal, I said it was fine, he probed, I confessed, he immediately offered me something else, took it off the bill, and refused to take 'no' for an answer when I insisted it was my palate, not the salad itself, that was the problem. For the service alone in this case I'd give it 5 stars. Having said that, the food was awesome, so this is an easy call. read more

Had an excellent meal at house last night for my birthday. Started off with their bread service. This was excellent, especially the accompanying rosemary garlic butter. Next tried the tomato soup and grilled cheese. Despite popular opinion, I was not blown away by the soup. It was better than canned soup, but not by leaps and bounds. I found it slightly too acidic and lacking a complexity of flavor. Likely could have used a dollop of creme fraiche and some basil. The grilled cheese with brie was good. Of course, it's Brie. And that did indeed balance out the soup a bit with its earthiness. For main course, the Rosemary Chicken was phenomenal. Super tender, perfectly crisp on a bed of beautifully seasoned garlic mashers and spinach. Perfect portion size. It was a small quarter chicken with breast and leg. The service was excellent. Our server was quick and attentive. He was happy to answer a few questions we had about the menu. The ambience was fantastic. This place is really cozy, had lots of windows, and is romantically lit. They played a cool mix of smooth chill relaxing lobby music along with some current hits. This was one of the coolest places I've ever been. It wasn't hipster or pretentious. Just cool. I don't award five stars unless a restaurant provides food and an environment that I feel I couldn't replicate at home. Being a fairly adequate cook myself, this is a fairly stringent standard. House receives five stars from me for its excellent cuisine and well-considered romantic/casual ambience. I highly recommend. read more

Sooooo, I finally went back to House after having not been there since probably 2011. It was also the last time I will be going there, because it has definitely changed, and it is NOT for the better. My daughter and I stopped in around 11 or so last weekend for brunch... After waiting maybe 10 minutes for a table (which wasn't bad), we then sat and waited. And waited. And waited some more for our food to come out, and when it finally did (45 minutes to an hour later), it was not at all what we were expecting! As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the House Salad which sounds so good on the menu was really lacking in flavor and was mostly lettuce. It came with a few slices of good bread thank goodness, although we did have to ask for butter. The huevos that I ordered made me want to cry, because I have loved the ones I've gotten at other restaurants and was sorry to see such a sad excuse for them placed in front of me. The huevos that I am used to have consisted of two fried eggs served with flour tortillas, rice, beans, salsas/sauces, and some cheese and a sprinkling of cilantro. House's consisted of two fried eggs on a handful of tortilla chips with a tiny amount of cheese melted on them, with a small scoop of guacamole. If I wanted tortilla chips and fried eggs, I would have just stayed home and made it myself. Along with the disappointment from the food and service, the place is just pretty uncomfortable now. They enlarged the space some years back, but it's really just not big enough for the amount of tables they have in there. My daughter sat pressed against the wall the whole time and was just uncomfortable with how close the family next to us was sitting (as was I). After that family left, the servers separated the two little tables that they had been sitting at so that the next people that came in were even closer to us! I literally had to turn sideways to get out of the little corner that I was in. Thank God I am on the skinny side!!! Anyway, sad to say that we won't be going back. I should have written a review of House earlier, as I'm a big fan of their afternoon and evening fare: their tomato soup and Grilled cheese sandwich is one of the best comfort food experiences you can have! Well, we decided to try them for brunch this past Saturday, and I can tell you it was decidedly delicious! I had the breakfast quesadilla, made with braised pork and topped with guacamole, green salsa, and two eggs. It looks so good, I felt bad eating it! Well after the first bite, I heartily dug in. My partner had the open-faced omelet, with zucchini, tomato, and goat cheese served in a small cast iron skillet. Yet another delicious dish, and the added bonus is that the cast iron kept the omelet nice and warm throughout the meal. All in all a great experience, on a sunny morning! read more

What a cute, little shop! I absolutely loved the homey feel and interior of House. This is a perfect spot to enjoy a nice lunch with a loved one. Service was nice and courteous. This is a solid but pretty expensive Soup , salad , brunch place. Everything was good. Nothing was great. Food tasted homemade. The service was good but I had a hard time getting a Turkey club. It's not on the menu but they have all the ingredients. They did relent reluctantly. If you have it why not accommodate the guest. I didn't think I was asking for the moon. The sandwiches were all good. So were the soups. The decor was meh and it was chilly in the restaurant despite it not being too cold today. I can't imagine what a fridged day feels like. Outstanding sandwiches! Visiting my son at Swarthmore and we headed to Media for lunch. As usual, Yelp guided us to this neighborhood gem! We walked and checked the restaurants on West State and we just could not decide. We were looking for a great casual restaurant with outdoor seating and a local vibe. We found it all at this small casual hipstery sandwich shop! House is very small with only a few tables inside and a few tables outside to sit. The feeling you get inside is a young, college town, fresh, organic, inexpensive and cool place to grab a cup of soup, a great panini, an interesting salad and some home made ice tea! And that's exactly what we all did. House offers a two or three item combo with choice of soup, salad and half a sandwich as a way to sample all. The tomato soup was creamy and delicious, not your typical acidic tomato soup. This is a must have along with the Harvest grilled cheese sandwich. The winter salad had fresh black mission figs, rosemary infused macrona almonds (I need more of these!), creamy chevere cheese and an amazing cranberry clementine vinaigrette dressing. I really could have eaten a full salad and a whole sandwich! On to the sandwiches. The Harvest was terrific! Creamy aged white cheddar cheese, apple slices, grilled onions and crunchy bacon grilled paninni style! We all shared an extra one of these on top of the half sandwiches we ordered. I had the Slugger, an interesting combination of braised pork, Kimchi slaw and white cheddar all melted together between grilled sour dough bread. Went here for Saturday brunch with my mom and brother. We ordered the shakshuka, the full monty, and the salmon eggs benedict along with a side of mac and cheese and the butterscotch cake. The shakshuka was alright, but a bit flavorless, and I thought hey would have baguette bread with it, but it was smaller kind of bread that wasn't as airy as baguette bread. It was a 3 out of 5. The salmon eggs benedict came with potatoes that were really small and were too crunchy, so we were basically eating pieces of burnt potato. However the eggs benedict was alright and was also a 3/5. The full monty was a bit underwhelming and I wish I got the croque madame. The waiter gave me a description of savory and sweet, which I'm all about. But really it was just french toast with cheese and bacon. It wasn't sold well and wasn't as good as others I've tried. The reason why I didn't get the croque madame is because it didn't include the french toast, which from my brunch experience most places have that as the bread. The mac and cheese was average and could have had more flavor. The butterscotch cake was like any other pound cake you could get in a store, but did taste more "homemade." The ambience of the restaurant was really good. It is very much a cute place to go with family or friends and the waiters are so nice. I like the set up they had and I feel like it wasn't crowded (seating setup-wise) like other brunch places where you could turn your head and enter the other tables personal space from how close you are. I work in an office down the street so House is one of our Go-to lunch spots. It's nice to have so many fresh, healthy lunch options in a relaxing atmosphere. My two favorites are the Salmon BLT which is made with smoked salmon, and the He-Man which is a Panini made with the juiciest meatloaf I've ever had. I know it sounds different to have a meatloaf sandwich, but it is amazing. The half sandwich/salad/soup combo is a really nice option to have. A few months ago, House started serving their brunch menu on a daily basis. LOVE being able to have brunch any day of the week and not just on Sundays. If you come here, you can't leave without getting their tomato soup. In my opinion its the best on State St. When I brought my family I ordered a 'round for the table' and man were they happy I did. Great consistency, finished with a small drizzle of olive oil on top and a toasted crostini. For a main I usually go with the Shiva curried chicken salad, not too much mayo and very flavorful. I forgot quarters at home and the owner gave me some right away and I didn't even have to tell her I was eating there. I dined outside and the server, Rebecca, greeted my friend and I right away. We never had to ask for coffee or water refills!! Food was delicious! I got the Shakshuka which was a middle eastern poached egg dish with goat cheese and a spicy tomato paste. Really disappointed in our brunch experience today. Starting with the nice. Our server was nice and we were optimistic after she told us their daily specials. That's about where the nice ends. After we were seated and heard the specials it took about 15 minutes before we got to place our order. It seemed like the waitress was stuck serving every table in the room with no help...so it's hard to blame her. Management however should make sure that staff is sufficient to take care of the customers. Now to the food: Not good house, not good at all. First off, never a good sign when your water glass stinks like a dysfunctional dishwasher. I have worked in restaurants and know the smell of plates and utensils that are washed in a non sterile appliance. Secondly...the food. We ordered a simple eggs Benedict and a pulled pork with poached egg and hollandaise. Both came out completely cold. Must have been sitting a while. This would coincide with the 30-40 minute wait for the food. Knock one. After the long wait we weren't going to have them remake. The eggs were inconsistent...one over cooked , one under cooked. The potatoes on the side were flavorless. The hollandaise was bland. No zip at all. The side salad I ordered was also terrible. A few leaves of lettuce and three tomato slices with a tasteless dressing and a ton of salt and pepper on top. Bad enough experience that we won't be back. read more

I've never given a bad review and House forced me to it. A group of us had been coming here every other week of months for convenience-always a little annoyed by their weird seating policy and meh food. They won't seat you even if the restaurant is empty until your party is all there. They also make you wait if you are all there even when it's empty. What the heck? The food is okay, not great and expensive. It's cold. Like really cold and when we asked to change tables they brought out a space heater instead - again, even when there was an abundance of tables available. The younger servers are nice but the woman in what I think is her 40s is awful. Either rushing or neglecting you and the manager/owner does nothing to address the unwillingness to seat people, cold food, cold restaurant. The smallest space with the biggest fans...an apt description for a place called House in Media. Literally the size of your kitchen, House offers panini, salads, soups, coffee, dessert. But the best choice is the panini...on Le Bus breads with things like homemade mayonnaise, apple wood smoked bacon, avocado and the House touch (lovingly and gently prepared by hand and delivered with a comment, compliment or casual conversation that makes you glad you live in Media.) My personal favorite is the King Kahn...chicken, hot sauce, caramelized onions and some blue cheese. It is so good I find it difficult to try the specials, despite the consistent lure of daily descriptions. You can sit outside with your dog (usually a dog bowl of water is provided) or inside...there are about six tables. Often you are treated to a sample of something special, a soup or a piece of cake, just enough to make you feel appreciated, your appetite acknowledged. Quality is consistent, full of flavor and freshness. It is casual, almost hip, very comfortable, like siting in someone's kitchen while you talk and eat. Feels like home at House. read more

We went for lunch on a busy Saturday. After forgetting about us for a while, someone came to take our order. The kitchen was terribly busy, so our server brought us a little something to nibble on which was very good. Everything we ordered was delicious and hot when it came to the table. They do brunch of Saturdays and Sundays, which was also delicious. Unfortunately out of the tomato soup, but I traded some of my grilled cheese for some of my husband's brunch brisket. Both were very good. Definitely recommend skipping the busy times. Either call ahead or go first thing when they open. Our service was slow because it was so busy! What an awesome little surprise! I had a rare day out in the 'burbs for work and stopped into House for lunch. All I have to say is - I wish I had this in the city! An intimidating list of paninis, grilled cheeses, cold sandwiches, and salads greeted me - I am terrible with making up my mind. I went for the best of both worlds and got a half sandwich, half soup deal - half of a fresh tomato, mozzarella, basil panini with balsamic and EVOO; and a cup of fresh (and I mean FRESH) tomato soup. They use Metropolitan Bakery bread and the ingredients are top-notch. The panini was toasted to perfection. My coworkers also ordered some sandwiches and salads that looked delicious. This place is tiny, so don't expect to find a table with a big group of people. I had jury duty in downtown Media, and with a 90-minute lunch break, my options were plentiful. Gorgeous day, so I walked into this place since I wanted a quiet place to sit outside. Plus, I digged the name. I was salivating over their menu of paninis and salads that were made to order. The soup of the day looked refreshing! I ordered the watermelon gazpacho, topped with goat cheese and mint and also their house salad with apples, walnuts, and blue cheese. I was uber stoked. Inside the restaurant was pretty small, so luckily I scored one of the two tables outside. It's off a side street, but it still allowed some much-needed people watching. The soup and salad was the perfect combination for lunch. Soup was chilled, and the mint added a nice coolness for which I savored. The salad had just enough "stuff" that wasn't overbearing. Boasting a small, selective menu of well crafted sandwiches, the variety isn't in the number of things you can choose to order, the variety comes in the careful preparation and interesting ingredient combinations that make up the sandwiches. Of course, if grilled cheese is your thing then this is definitely the place for you. And soup? Probably the best in the borough, all homemade, all delicious. The place is small, so bachelor/bachelorette parties should probably go elsewhere. But if you want to celebrate with yourself on that raise you just got, or the tests came back negative, then House is a great place to start. read more

After living a block away from the restaurant House I finally made it there for a meal. It was a really nice day out and was able to take advantage of House's out door seating. The food was amazing. There was about 5 of us that ate together and there wasn't one complaint about the food. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! I highly recommend the sandwich Jersey Joe! The ordering was a bit confusing only because you order at the counter and then need to return to the counter again after your meal to pay, but the staff was very nice and helpful so it was not a worry at all. I've always heard great reviews of this place, but looking at their menu, I could never find anything that was quite my taste. One day I called them to see what their soup was, and it turns out it was one of my favorites, potato soup! I ordered a small to go and was delighted to see that they included 2 pieces of freshly sliced french baguette. The soup was the perfect size and heartiness, and the bread was a perfect ending to scooping up the last of the soup in the container.
