i literally couldn't tell you how the drinks were. my friend and i came out for my 23rd birthday and went in to celebrate and the bartender didn't even greet us with a hello. he said "you are definitely not of age" took my friends ID which is a new york state license and asked her what year she graduated high school. mind you the man is making a scene in front of other guests basically putting on a show. he also proceeded to threaten calling the cops to check the IDs. i then gave him mine (which is a florida ID) and he told us to get out. if that wasn't the rudest thing to happen on my birthday i don't know what else is. read more

Terrible. Came here yesterday with my brother and two of my friends. No signature cocktails to offer and I Paid $18 before tip for a blueberry martini that tasted like synthetic motor oil. No place to hang out with your crew and enjoy your overpriced drinks, no hostesses around to seat you, atrocious music and there was some gross 6' red-head guy that kept trying to rub his body on women that did not have a man near them and the bouncers did not even notice. He did it to me when I first walked over to the bar- walked over to corner me with his giant body and when I moved over to miss him he just turned and hit me with his body a different way. Second time ever going to Housers was last night (8/4/18). My friends went up to the bar, got us all (6 people) Zippies. I want that to be prefaced because we were paying customers that were treated this way. The music was great at first, we were all having a grand time, until the song "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas came on. Not many people know, but the uncensored version exchanges the word "started" for "r*****ed." And in 2018, Houser's Bar decided play this uncensored version, which says this slur 34 times. Regardless of the fact that my only sibling has a disability and has had that word weaponized against her, as an adult living in the here and now, that word is unacceptable. There were other people, including my friends who know my sibling, that were visibly disturbed by this version. One of my dear friends went up to the bar and politely asked for the song to be changed, as she knew it wasn't right (also, the uncensored version is just fine if you feel like you MUST play a fourteen year old pop song at your bar). The bartender told her, verbatim, "If you don't like the song, get the f*** our of my bar." I want it to be very clear that she was not rude, belligerent or demanding. She was just trying to do right by me and by others who have been demeaned with such a word. It is not 2004 anymore. How anybody could think that playing this song was okay (and then on top of that, to be so blatantly, disgustingly abrasive in response) is sickening. We left Housers and went to Bocce, where we also were able to drink Zippies, play pool and had our song requests respected. I went here on Saturday for my birthday. Unfortunately the block lost power and the fire department had to come. Whatever, no big deal. We waited and when it was safe to go in, we went back. Immediately we were bombarded by a RUDE IGNORANT ASS of a blonde woman, I don't know if she is the owner or what. She didn't believe that we were seated, literally threw menus at us, and said "Well who knows how long you'll be waiting here, but whatever." When I asked if she minded if we moved to a table in the sun she said "No, hunny I do not care. You're moving cause you want to be in the sun right? Isn't that your reason? Just go. I would give this bar negative stars if I could. I just left this bar (I am completely sober) and the bartender was an absolute nightmare. It was a guy with a blue bandana, I didn't care to get his name after this experience. This was my first time to fire island even though I've lived on Long Island my whole life. It was my friends birthday and we were waiting for them to meet up with us at Housers. So we figured we'd just get a drink to start while we wait. We were planning on being there for hours. My friend and I ordered our drinks and before I even grabbed my drink from the bartender (he handed me my money first and I had my phone in the other hand) he made a snarky comment 'we don't work for free'. I put my money in my pocket to grab my drink. So I responded with 'what?' Because I couldn't believe what he was saying to me. He said again 'it's customary to leave gratuity to bartenders but whatever'. Excuse me. Tips are EARNED. I've been to plenty of bars in NYC and I always leave a tip based on how many drinks I end up ordering. And since this was only the first one I didn't feel it was necessary. To publicly humiliate someone into giving you a tip is absolute garbage service. Also it might be noted this bartender was noticeably drunk, but that's not an excuse for his behavior. Came here for some drinks and dancing on a rainy Saturday night. The drinks were $8, which wasn't too bad, but they were pretty weak. Luckily I was still buzzed off my Rocket Fuel from the Island Mermaid. The bartender was nice when my friend asked for a little more vodka, though. It wasn't too crowded when we got there at 11, but the bouncer told us it'd be packed come midnight and he was right. We went to the bathroom and came back out and it seemed like another 100 people had just showed up in that time. The music was okay. Well, it was actually pretty good, but it wasn't what I wanted to hear and had to rhyme or reason to it. They'd play a hip hop/dancy song that came out in the last year or two and then they'd play two or three 80's or early 00's song that was more of a sing-a-long song than a dancing song. Don't get me wrong -- I love these songs -- but when I want to dance, I want to dance. They also didn't have a DJ, so the songs were played all the way through and there was a bit of a pause between each song, which was a bit awkward. The biggest downfall of the night was that my friend's jacket was stolen. All of a sudden she just got this urge to check on our coats, which we had left on a table, which was in our sight for most of the night. When we went over to the coats, hers (a white jean jacket) was missing. I thankfully wore a black jacket I didn't mind losing, but mine was still there. There's no coat check and it was 55 degrees and raining, so coats were necessary. I guess we should have kept a better eye on them, but I never thought someone on Fire Island would steal it. Who honestly decides they're going to steal someone else's coat from a bar? The bouncer was really nice when we told him about it and stamped our wrists so we could come back if we wanted to, without paying the cover. We did not go back, as it was getting late, but nice to know he cared. Would love to go back later in the summer on a nice evening. For starters, went with a few girlfriends from HS, one was here from out of state..fire island was perfect..right? We went to Housers, ordered drinks and apps to start, all of us wanted and ordered lobster.. dinner comes out....I was served a female lobster filled with eggs and thick black stuff... I spoke to the server nicely and she apologized, agreed it was not right and took it back to kitchen...with in a minute, the owner who is very rude, approached us harshly , I was surprised her attitude was nasty and argumentative. She was mad that I sent it back and had the nerve to tell me the guy at the bar ate it and he said it was fine.. I told her she shouldnt be serving females for one and I did not care that the guy ate it, I was not eating a lobster filled with eggs and black stuff. seriously, the entire tail was covered in black..She was annoyed and told me this was a one time only and if I am served another like this, she will not take it back..I told her simply do not bring me a female. glutton for punishment I suppose... Went back a few weeks later with 5-6 girls, figured it was just a bad day the last time, so try again.... mistake again! we all had apps, dinner and drinks..we were sitting having a nice time, still wracking up the bill..the server came up to us and told us the owner wanted us to finish up and leave to make room for more seatings...there were empty tables all around us... if there was a line waiting for dinner, I would have totally respected that, but there wasnt and like I mentioned, many empty tables. I went there for years, way before this woman took over and sadly its just not the same. This place was awful, I couldn't even have a seat here. I agree with another reviewer who said that one star is being generous. My friends & I came in here for dinner/drinks we were immediately told by one of the waiters there is an hour long wait just for food. My friends & I were like ok well can we have drinks and then get our food? Then the guy was like you know what you got to talk to this other woman here about that so we waited and the other waitress with an attitude mind you is like well I'm letting you know right now there is an hour long wait for food, and we were like well can we be seated and we will wait but have drinks? Then she's like well if you are just drinking you can't be seated and need to be at the bar, so I can't seat you. Again we were like well we would like to eat, which for some reason she wasn't grasping and seemed to be very rude and unwilling to seat us. One of our absolutely must go-to spots when hitting Ocean Beach! An old school, beachy, reasonably priced, dive type bar! In the front is a pool table and the bar which gets PACKED, but despite the chaos, the bartenders are speedy and efficient. Zippy Coolers are the go to drink here, be sure to order one! Behind this area are the restrooms which I LOATHE. The lines never move, worse than any other restroom I've been too. The volume of people this place attracts, there really needs to be a stall or two added! Be prepared, for every five men who go, ONE woman goes, and I'm not kidding. I've seen people get nasty on this line while waiting and begin banging on the door. The dance floor is usually always packed and the selection of music is crowd pleasing, playing oldies hits like "SHOUT" AND "Come on Eileen" and throwing some hip hop into the mix. There is a very spacious outdoor section on the beach with plenty of picnic tables and a beautiful view of the boats sitting in the water, great alternative when inside becomes overwhelming. Excellent, laid back, venue with a decent size to it. There are also Darts in the dance floor section as well! read more

One star is being generous. The staff we encountered was downright rude and nasty. It took all of three minutes for two separate staff members to turn our entire group off. They wanted to know how much we planned on spending before they would even seat us. They went out of their way to make us feel unwelcome. Worst experience on the island by far!!!! read more

This is my second year coming to fire island and I have to say I'm disappointed in this bar. Although I've never eaten there, it was originally a favorite late night spot near the water to hang out and listen to pretty good music. However, this year my experience was not the same. First of all, the bathrooms are disgusting. One bathroom each for men and women and there is always a huge line. But the bathroom issue isn't why I felt compelled to leave a review. It was the extremely rude and often drunk bartender named Joe. I witnessed him yelling at multiple people for no reason.. including other bartenders. When ordering drinks he cannot remember how much you paid him and cannot count the proper change. Around 3:20 my boyfriend and I were on our way back to our hotel and decided to have one more drink at housers. (I get it 3:20 is pushing it but the door was wide open and there were tons of people still inside) as we walk in, joe screams to another bartender "what the fuck is wrong with you?????? You left the fucking door open." He then looks at us and points at the door and goes "leave. We are closed" I understand it could have been last call but I felt that he was unnecessarily rough and abrasive. My boyfriend and I were not close to drunk and quite a bit older than most of the younger people partying. We had also been there the night before and witnessed him yelling at other patrons while appearing drunk. I guess I just expected a little more professionalism from him. read more
