It was great to return to this steakhouse for a date. We selected this eatery due to its great reviews and previous positive experiences. The challenge was that we had not been here in years. This place made for a great evening with delicious food and a lively atmosphere. We ordered the grilled artichoke with the remoulade and the charred flavor came through. Great homage to the pride of castroville! Two huge halves that were so tasty, we just dove in. My porterhouse did not disappoint, with its tender, juicy flavor in every bite. Our server was very informative on the specials and what she would suggest if we didn't know what we wanted to try. Ribeye steak was so flavorful and fell apart once you bit into it. Filet migon was just as good but just not as flavorful as the ribeye steak. Huge baked potato, big enough to share. Spinach dip comes with sour cream and salsa, running out of chips, just let them know, they will bring you more. Finished the meal with key lime pie, one of my favorite desserts here. One of the worst restaurants that I ever been. Me and my family wanted to come to Houston's to enjoy lunch and we been coming here for almost 20 years. When we entered the restaurant, the server told us that we can't reserve a reservation because apparently my dad is wearing shorts and sandals. Mind you we didn't have any problems like that when we always come here. And then when we left, the other people were already waiting for the table and they were also wearing shorts and sandals. I love coming to Houston's the vibe is always fun and staff always friendly. Had a Friday night girls night. Reservations were full so we decided to wait. While waiting we had drinks from the bar which was a nice services. Waited for an hour but didn't seem that long since we were drinking and talking. Now let's talk about the food and how delicious it was! We got the chips with dip which was a great start to our main dishes. I ordered the ribs. Fall off the bone was an understatement, sauce was on point. Hands down the best ribs I've had in years! The girls got the Hawaiian steak which they enjoyed as well. I haven't been to Houston's in over a decade since I was never really fond of the food back then. I don't know what kind of refresh they've done since then, but it is now certainly a much more pleasant dining experience. Our server was fantastic and did his best in confirming what dishes could be made vegan-friendly for my husband. The aesthetics were classy, but not too stuffy. I am a sucker for key lime pie and Houston's has arguably the best homemade key lime pies out there. Rotisserie chicken kale salad was good but had way too much dressing even after I asked for light dressing. Can't wait to come back to try other items on their menu. read more

If I could, I would give this restaurant zero stars. They kept us waiting for about two hours, then decided to alter our reservation--moving us to a table for five (we had a five-year-old child with us who was getting very hungry)--and made us wait even longer. I don't know why they did this, but the truth is that this restaurant is completely ill-equipped to accommodate guests with children, and its attitude toward its patrons borders on discriminatory. They were very rude. And I am so sorry that I chose this restaurant for celebration. Will not recommend if you want to be appropriately served. Food was delicious but management the worst one. My favorite restaurant!!! It is our anniversary tradition to go here every year and we are never disappointed. The ambiance is magnificent. The decor is gorgeous. I'm always in awe when I'm here. The service is fantastic! The food is absolutely exceptional! We always get the same thing because it's just too good not to get it. I get the spinach and artichoke dip, which is amazing. it's the best spinach artichoke dip you will ever have. I get the knife and fork ribs which, literally, fall off the bone when you pick them up. My husband gets the fillet with french fries and loaded baked potato. The fillet is so tender and moist. It's as if it melts in your mouth. The flavor is amazing as well. I strongly advise to make reservations at least a weekend advance. The weight is always really long without one. read more

We finally got seated and greeted by our server Katelyn, which provide amazing service. We immediately ordered couple items with the following: - Toast Bread: Great as an appetizer! It comes with generous slices of bread. The dough was buttery and light and complement well with the butter and olive on the side. - Thai Sushi Roll: The flavor is interesting in a good way. Not that I'll ordered again, but the fish was fresh. - Hawaiian Rib Eye: This is the dish that you want if you like steak! It's different than your classic steakhouse, since the meat was marinated or brushed with soy pineapple glaze. I usually enjoy the salt and pepper steak only but this dish definitely took me by surprise. - French Dip: If you want to skip your steak, go with this one instead. They gave you generous portion of the prime rib, dip it in the au jus and you are golden! The drinks are great as well! The Negroni is strong enough to make me tipsy! Double Cut Pork Chop always came out juicy, soft and yummy. Double is a really double cut...big piece. Grilled Artichoke is right on...perfectly grilled and the dipping sauce was so deliciously creamy. Kale salad is really really yummy. Kale was fresh and crunchy. It has good amount of dressing and chopped nuts... love it! Cobbler was so good. A little sweet with it's cinnamon buttery sauce, a lot of crunchy walnuts, big pieces of apple. I was with a person of color when a dress code "no hats" was enforced rudely against him and I looked around to see a fair number of white men wearing not only hats but the hoodies and sports names on T-shirts (also part of thieir "sliding scale depending on race 'dress code'"). Today, I was at a ladies only table and we were told to leave the restaurant when our friend was late due to freeway traffic. It was a celebratory lunch as she was returning to a new home in Pasadena after her home burnt down after the Pasadena fires. Prior to being told to leave, we had all ordered our own entrees and appetizers and a salmon dinner for our friend even though she had not arrived. In fact, it had been only 75 minutes when we were told by management that we had to leave as there was a "90 minute rule." Our server corrected this to a 90 minute to 2 hour rule to stay at a table. I suppose another "sliding scale" depending on gender and race. Houston's - you need to amp up customer service and realize that Thank Goodness this is not the 1950s - people of color are admitted to restaurants as are women dining without men. You have your share of civil rights violations already so perhaps the thought is "one more does not matter....?" I doubt that I will be returning until and unless you get rid of discriminatory policies and apply those nondiscriminatory policies uniformly and not based on race or gender. read more

After a victorious 2-on-2 golf match, the boys and I headed to Houston's in Pasadena to cash in on our well-earned dinner bet. My golf partner and I have been on a roll--three wins, One New Moon Dinner, tonight's dinner, and another Houston's dinner coming up in a few weeks. I've been nursing a foot injury, so I wasn't at my best, but my golf partner played scratch golf and we absolutely smoked them. Enough bragging--let's talk about the food. We arrived around 7:30 PM and the place was buzzing. Thankfully, we had reservations and were seated right away. The atmosphere was lively, dark, and energetic--definitely a great spot for a date night or group outing. Food Rundown: We started with some sushi rolls--fresh, flavorful, and a great shareable starter. Two of my friends went all-in on the fried chicken triple decker club. Another buddy had ribs and fries--classic and satisfying. I opted for the salmon, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It came with mashed potatoes, broccoli, and their house salad. I paired it with a glass of Prisoner wine, which complemented the meal beautifully. Minor Letdown: Out of four seafood entrées listed, salmon was the only one available. No trout, no petrale sole, no crab cakes. A Bit of a bummer since I eat salmon regularly and was hoping to try something new. Service: Nico, our waiter, was excellent--attentive without hovering, polite, and efficient. Our food came out fairly quickly, and everything tasted great. Pet Peeve Alert: My only real gripe: the food came out warm, not hot. By the time I finished, it was room temperature. Not a dealbreaker, but something I always notice. Also, It was my friend's birthday coming up in a few days, and I thought it would be a nice gesture to bring out a dessert with a candle and sing happy birthday. The waiter informed us that Houston's doesn't offer complimentary birthday desserts. A bit tacky, especially when you're spending over $400 on dinner for four, I think. One of my favorite restaurants as I've been going here my whole life. Never had a problem with dress code. Had a reservation with my family and right before we sat a hostess approached us and said we weren't up to "dress code standards" and had to change our clothes in order to dine there. Super awkward and unnecessary confrontation. Needless to say, we just walked out. I understand they have the right to refuse service, have a dress code, etc. but it was handled very poorly. Also, at least be consistent with it. I saw a couple walk in after us wearing shorts and hoodies. Did they have to change too? New staff is definitely not it. Do better. read more

we came for the famous french dip as raved about in the NY Times over a year ago after the demise of Cole's in DTLA. The place was packed on a random Tuesday lunch. We were seated promptly per our reservation. Our server Madison was the second person to come to our table as another asian woman came and took our drink orders. When our drinks arrived Madison came again and asked if we were ready and we both ordered the sandwiches and she said "easy peasy." The food arrived and my friend, who had put himself through college working at a deli, approved of the shaved beef and properly baked bread. Eating commenced as did the moans of pleasure. Then Madison came by without warning with a freshly frosted martini glass and poured my half finished house Hendricks cocktail into the new glass. When I was younger I worked as a server trainer in a restaurant and I have Never had anyone do that for me. My friend commented how at Musso and Franks they would give you the second half of your martini in a little side bumper on ice but this was above the bar. I used to think steaks are the same until I experienced the Hawaiian Ribeye. Steaks are no longer the same and it is my favorite restaurant steak of all time. It is so flavorful, perfectly charred, and delightfully juicy. The dinner version used to come with a baked potato but sadly it is no longer offered and replaced with mashed potatoes instead. They call it potato purée lol. We usually order this with a kale salad and either prime rib sandwich or chicken sandwich. Portions are huge. Service is also always impeccable! Visited Houston's for a late Valentines Day dinner. First thing I would recommend is have a reservation. We visited the Sunday after Valentine's Day and waited about 45min for a table. But the food is definitely worth the wait. I would not label Houston's as a steakhouse mainly because they don't have a wide selection of steaks, but the ones that they serve are delicious. They have great sushi also. We started with some sushi as our appetizer and enjoyed the rib eye steak for our main course. And finished off with the nut brownie with ice cream. The staff is super friendly, they have a cocktail waitress going around taking drink orders while you wait so that a plus. Would definitely recommend. read more

Worst experience ever!!! Such Discrimination!! We have been customers of Houston's for over 30+ years and tonight will definitely be our last night dining here. Our son was wearing a regular baseball cap because he was not having a good hair day. My thing is if the restaurant has a dress code I'm ok with that. Just let us know at the beginning and it would not be a problem. Not when we've already been in there for 40+ minutes dining and spending over $300. Dress codes need to be enforced when you walk in. Wife wanted Houston's. Never been before. Arrived to a packed group of people waiting in the lobby. Arrived at 7:31pm for our reservation Seated at 7:45. Not a bad wait. Our server Scott set the tone for the night early on, someone left their jacket in the booth and the table wasn't wiped when we were sat and he was so courteous and able to fix things immediately. If you want to experience classic service how it should be, ask for this guy, he's a pro. Started with the spinach artichoke dip which was wonderful. It also comes with sour cream and salsa. Unusual but a nice touch. Server assistants replenished our chips seamlessly without us asking. True pros. To drink we started with dirty Ketel one martinis and Scott offered goat cheese stuffed olives. Bro are you kidding, mind blown. So good. Kudos to the bartender. What really upped the game was when Scott brought out new chilled glasses and switched out drinks into them?? Never had this happen but a really nice move. Very classy. Real quick I'll mention one miss but not dwell because the night was otherwise perfect. Spicy Tuna roll. Wife said sushi here is underrated but there's hardly any tuna in here, some bland veg like a cucumber. Not recommended. Anyways on the main events and keeping it PMA. I ordered the French Dip and it was sublime. Generous Shaved meat rare with perfect sourdough dipped in horseradish and then au jus. Are you kidding me??!! WOW so incredible. From the stellar pond out front stocked with ginormous orange koi fish to the dark lighting and leather booths, this is a great spot for a group to lounge and linger. Fortunately, I was able to share two dishes because they're both so good! And it's hard to decide sometimes. Wood-grilled Rib Eye: Rib eye is my favorite cut and only a bone-in version would be better. The grill marks are cross-hatched things of beauty. They execute medium-rare perfectly with a succulent, warm, red center. The rib eye is marbled enough so that it is oh so flavorful and juicy. Oh yeah, the tangy cole slaw and thin crispy fries were great too. Barbecue Pork Ribs: The pork ribs are such a cliché - fall off the bone tender. Just a slight tug of the fork frees up the savory morsels of pork. Spinach and Artichoke Dip: The whole grilled artichokes were unavailable, so this is probably the next best app. It's creamy and gooey, and does its job well, which is make you hunger the the main course.
