Thinking of the yummy Hawaiian Rib Eye at Houston's... 4 stars!!!! I really should try other menu items, but the Hawaiian Rib Eye is what I always end up choosing as my main course. I absolutely love the flavor of the marinade/sauce of the ribeye, and it always comes out perfectly tender and mouth-watering. For the starter, the smoked salmon is my favorite, and it's always the perfect appetizer before the rib eye. Once we're passed this awful COVID situation, I definitely would love to enjoy these menu items once more, hopefully sometime soon in 2021. Why just 4 stars? Although I've found the service to be okay each visit, we definitely much prefer the friendliness at the Manhattan Beach location. Definitely can be a much longer drive, and the Pasadena Houston's is so close to home, but have dined so many more times in Manhattan Beach. The staff seem so much so much nicer and more laid-back. Parking is also so much easier at the Manhattan Beach Houston's since it's located in a huge shopping complex with a huge lot. Unfortunately, parking is limited at the Pasadena Houston's, and you'll have to look for street parking once the lot gets full. Highly recommend making a reservation to be seated promptly. And, so much waste, constantly new side plates and new cutlery!? It's ridiculous. If you want to do pseudo fine dining, then you need to have someone teach you about it. My daughter and her husband decided to stop by since they live in Pasadena just to say hello and bring us a present. They brought my two grandchildren. They just wanted to stop by the table to drop off a gift they were told they couldn't do that. I saw my daughter out of the corner of my eye, so I waved her over. She came by and put our gift on the table and said she just wanted to stop in she knew we were there, my grandchildren with it with her and asked for a glass of water. We had a booth for four and there was only us two so they had room to sit for a second The waitress was very polite but she said she couldn't do it. She'd have to ask the manager the manager came over and said we couldn't even get water for the grandchildren. I'm very disappointed. This was our anniversary was a special night and sometimes they are very rude. Tonight was one of those nights. It's a wonderful place. If it's only two people maybe four if you have more family members you'll never get in. they could've handled it a little better one little glass of water for the kids and they would've been on their way. It was the best restaurant for service and quality of food. I even befriended the chef. Since moving to California we've been excited to have Houston's here as well. And we've been going to this place for over town decades. Last May we celebrated my sister's birthday and ordered the usual. The consistently good artichoke dip and the ribs. Also ordered a Cesar salad. The dip got us back to our days of yore, darn great. But it went downhill from there. The salad was far from a cedar salad, not even the dressing made sense. When I asked the server she said that's their version of Cesar salad. Hmmmmmm. The my barbecue ribs arrived. When I crave for KC style ribs this was my goto place. The ribs were very dry and burnt. What happened to consistency? When I asked the server she just said it's their style. Really? Sadly that will be our last visit after over 30 years of dining at Houston's. Despite having an open kitchen, Houston's Restaurant remained quiet and peaceful with its mellow yellow lighting. Excellent for date night or a steak night for one. Although the service was speedy and the food came out rapidly, I highly recommend making a reservation since walk-ins did have to wait. Our server had a slow start, forgetting our condiments and water but she came to check on us several times afterwards. Our cocktails came out within a few minutes, followed by our appetizers. The steaks were served at 15 minutes. =FOOD= Unfortunately their artichokes were out of season so we opted for the off-menu brussels sprouts instead. *Brussels Sprouts: had an excellent char without being burnt. Sprouts were tender and nicely salted. Loved the side of horseradish cream sauce. Great starter, especially with the Hawaiian steak since it didn't come with greens. *Hawaiian: subtle pineapple-soy-ginger marinade that balanced sweet and salty flavors. The ginger wasn't apparent, so this resembled more of a teriyaki sauce. The steak was perfectly medium rare and melt in your mouth. Came with either a baked potato or fries. The fries were average and the spicy ketchup wasn't notable. *Wood Grilled Rib-eye: although the Hawaiian was stellar, this was my preferred steak. Simple seasoning but unbeatable crust and juiciness. Cooked to perfection and the simplicity went well with the gingery, salty bok choy. *Elderflower Cocktail: best paired with the wood grilled ribeye. Wasn't orange forward but rather fruit centered. Light sweetness that would have rounded out the saltier steak. *Margarita: best paired with the Hawaiian. Need that saltiness and acidity to cut through the pineapple. Incredibly smooth and one of the best margaritas I've had. Each plate had a hefty portion and given that each entree came with a delicious side, the $49 price tag was well worth it. One of my favorite steak experiences given the quality of ingredients and cohesion of flavors. Add in the pleasant ambiance and service and this was a shoo-in for future visits. Reservations: You can make them online, I would recommend doing that to make sure that you get sat immediately. Though, guests who were on the waitlist were able to enjoy cocktails. That definitely helps with the wait. Food: The food is amazing. I always go and ask my husband to sample everything with me. We can the spinach dip, the nigiri, the Caesar salad, the filet and the sundae. I would recommend ordering ALL of them, you can not go wrong. I have been a huge Houston's fan for years, beginning in Atlanta, but as the chain has closed many restaurants over the past 10-15 years, they are becoming harder to find. There are only 10 locations left in the entire country. This location, like all Houstons, is very classy...and always packed. Even at 3 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon it was standing room only. This has to be one the highest grossing restaurants in L.A. Having said that, the prices are a bit out of control here. $26 for a cheesburger and $20 for a martini and a $66 lunch is, unfortunately, not worth it. The California burger, while good, had way too much onion which was overpowering. The fresh cut fries were excellent, as always. The $20 dirty martini was just ok, not $20 ok though. It was not as smooth as I like. Also, it was FREEZING in the restaurant and was quite uncomfortable in short sleeves. It's not a place I can justify visiting very often, but for nostagia, it hits the spot! read more

Sadly this is not group friendly restaurant. They will only make a reservation for a maximum of 4 guests. If you plan on having more than that then you'll have to wait to be seated which can take up-to an hour on the weekend. Most restaurants appreciate knowing when they will have a larger party but not here. Looks like we need to take our business elsewhere. If you only have 4 guests or you don't mind waiting a long time, there food is comparable to other American steak houses. The French Dip, Thai Noodle salad with filet are our favorites. The sushi is meh. They also serve you soft drinks from the little cans which is cute but if you are thirsty can take a bit to refresh when they're at peak capacity. I think these are reasons why the location in Manhattan probably shut down. Too many great places that take reservations for a party greater that 4 - who wants to wait when you can plan ahead?! read more

The first thing I want to note about this restaurant is the service. The service was hands down the best service I have ever experienced. The waitress and hostess were all so sweet. The waitress made sure everything was to our liking and kept checking in to see if we needed anything or any adjustments to our food or drinks. She remade our drinks 2 times and both times we didn't like it because it didn't taste the best and she took it off our bill! I would've given 5 stars but the food was okay considering the price. In my opinion, I felt like the Rib Eyes weren't anything special or crazy. The service definitely made up for it. It was about an hour and 45 minutes wait (exactly on point when we first checked in and asked for the wait time). But, while waiting they ask if you would like to order any drinks from the bar. I think the service was amazing but the food lacked slightly. The restaurant was medium sized and slightly dim. It was definitely on the fancier size and they have a dress policy. So good! We haven't been to Houston's in years! We've been to plenty of various renditions of the "OG" restaurant. But, none as good. This one still serves soup. The consistency is really good, I have never tried anything like it. Their Caesar salad is as good as you would expect from a nice place. Someone if our party said he went to another restaurant in a different state some 20 years ago, and the flavors remain spectacular. The service is always top notch; there's a big parking lot right in front (which is sometimes full in peak hours but otherwise usually has a spot); and the food is consistent and tasty. The greatest hits for us include the fries (using a ton of their seasoning salt on top); the burger (a classic, slightly upscale burger with fresh veggies and a good bun); and the crispy chicken sandwich (which is massive, with three pieces, and can easily feed two). Two things to flag: (1) if you come at peak times without a reservation, you'll be waiting a long time (think an hour), and (2) unlike some other Hillstone spots, you can make reservations here, and they're usually gettable so long as you plan a couple days in advance. read more
