I've been a regular customer at Houston's for years. I have a dietary restriction and can't eat bread, so I always order the beef dip without the bun. This has never been a problem before. Today I was told they would no longer serve it without the bun because they don't like how it looks plated. The server confirmed this was a manager decision, and the manager repeated they would refuse to make it without bread. I wasn't asking for substitutions -- just to leave off something I cannot eat. It's unreasonable for a restaurant to dictate how a guest is allowed to order food, especially when dietary needs are involved. Refusing a simple omission is rude and ignorant. We were getting ready to order coffee and dessert and manager comes over and abruptly tells us to move to the bar, they need our table! Not professional or friendly. We were shocked! A terrible experience at Houston's Pompano Beach at a Birthday lunch with 5 adults ages 36-83. We brought in flowers for the table and were well dressed. We frequented the restaurant prior to this experience so we were shocked at what transpired. The dining room was empty on a Sunday afternoon with many available tables nearby. We were seated in a round booth comfortably and the waiter took our order. It was at this point that the manager approached to inform us that new policy is not to accommodate more than 4 persons per party (to make the experience more exclusive) and that one of us would have to sit alone at the bar while the 4 or us dined. We thought this was a joke but alas the General manager (Matthew) echoed the same policy and offered no solutions to our party, despite already being seated and an order being placed. He seemed to be happy to exercise some sort of power over us and said we should be grateful that he will not charge for the ordered drinks and food (that we didn't get a chance to consume). Came here last night to celebrate my husband's birthday and we left underwhelmed. It began with us being told they can't seat parties of 5 or more (we were a party of 6) so we had to sit at separate tables. They could have offered to put tables together outside but didn't. Didn't even try to accommodate us for the inconvenience which I felt was odd. We decided to move forward and wait anyway. Once we arrived, the valet aggressively asked us if we were just there for the drone show assuming that we were trying to freeload for a show. It felt like a form of prejudice. I didn't see him ask the people ahead or in back of us when they pulled up. Strike two. When we were seated by the manager, I let her know we were there celebrating my husbands birthdays expecting some sort of acknowledgment from our server before we ended our night here. We ordered everything, drinks, appetizers, dessert, not a word to him of his special day. Not a candle, not a "happy birthday", I couldn't even get her half the time and had to ask surrounding servers for more drinks, more appetizer items, etc. I haven't been disappointed in an establishment like this in a while. I was quite surprised. The saving grace was the food. Our spinach dip was great and so was The Hawaiian. It's what I always get at other Houston's locations. Until recently, I have been a regular at this Houston's for the past 20 years... one of the main reasons (and I have said it many times over the years), is the consistency of the service and food. But sometimes things change... The food is still excellent and the staff is stiff efficient (they do run a good ship); and the view from the outside dining area can't be beat (overlooking the intracoastal). I can't say my gripe is specifically management or one specific manager but I arrived to the patio hostess and requested a table... I was told by the hostess that I can't wear flip-flops (which I corrected to be sandals), I reminded here they are on the water, outside, by the beach and not in the interior dining room. She insisted and called for the manager... The manager was not particularly nice... surprising since all the previous managers I have met were very friendly and accommodating; she actually had the nerve to say go home to get shoes and return. I asked if this was new since we are outside in 90 degree weather and no offense but look around... you have well over 10 people in the patio and bar with flip-flops. She also mentioned collared shirts are required... at this point I'm flabbergasted. She said the dress code is on the website... I couldn't resist a good debate and I asked about hats... always have been banned INSIDE but they have always permitted them OUTSIDE and yet that isn't stated on the website... I took my table (with my sandals and hat) and enjoyed by food but I think my long-run of being a loyal patron has run it's course. read more

This is a great upscale location located on the canal. They do have a dress code so be sure to dress nicely when you come. They also have valet parking. Reservations are recommended. The service is top notch and incredibly professional. The food is always excellent too. Perfect place for a date night or special celebration. Consistently great service, food, & atmosphere. First off, let me start by saying that Houston's is a staple for me. It's somewhere to go for a nicer meal that I know will be satisfying. I recommend a reservation, especially on the weekends or risk long waits. Note, that they do only seat parties of four and under. Anything over that will be split tables. This can be an incredibly frustrating policy, so good to note. The bar area is first come first serve (bartender keeps a running list) and is perfect if your party is two or under! Houston's is a staple for me because of the consistently great service. They do an excellent job of training their staff. It's so refreshing to see the wonderful manners and etiquette that the staff has. Another reason, is the food. The menu isn't entirely large, and does offer some seasonal updates. But everything on the menu is delicious and consistent. No matter what day, or time, the food is always kept to a very high standard! Some of my favorite items include: Salmon appetizer, Trout, Filet, French Dip, red cabbage. And seasonal items like the crispy oysters and artichokes! And for dessert, the five nut brownie is divine. Although the ribs and filet were pretty good, the lunch menu at Houston's leaves more than something to be desired. As bourgeois as this may sound, I was unimpressed that they did NOT have giant ice cubes for cocktails nor do they offer a larger bottle of sparkling water for the table. This is a steakhouse - I though those were staples. What in the world is that nonsense?! I can't be the only person to order an Old Fashioned and not want it diluted by rapidly melting ice. The trick to Houston's us to eat early. Five o'clock-6.it's the magic time. And forget about large parties. They don't have large tables indoors and outside is slim. But if you do get in, buckle your seatbelt because you are going to enjoy a gastro trip like no other. Whether you try the French dip, the Thai Steak salad, the Prime Rib, the taste sensations will thrill you. We like to start with the stuffed Grilled Artichoke. It's flavorful and large enough to share. The service is white glove and the servers are very attentive. It's an open kitchen so you know they are confident that the preparation of your meal is perfect. The restaurant offers complimentary valet car service but there is a small lot to the left of the restaurant for self parking. As we got there wait time was an hour long , so we sit at the side tables of the bar as we waited for our table, to our surprise no one came by to offer drinks or make this experience an good one . So we decided to go sit at the bar bc enough seats were available and the waitress came to tell me there was a waitlist for the bar lol something I've never seen before . I told her we were on the list for the restaurant and she said we weren't allowed to sit at the bar ! Came here on a Monday evening and got a table outside. Weather was cool and being on the inter coastal, it created a nice environment to enjoy a good meal. The atmosphere is tasteful and relaxed BAD: Nothing really - the prices aren't cheap but fair for what you get Houston's was a gem. Our server was wonderful and the food was well cooked and delicious. I had a wonderful, large NY strip and the other diner had the pork chop and mash. I Ordered my favorite Shrimp Cocktail They look more like lobster tails! 4 huge plump sweet delicious shrimp with both cocktail sauce and tartar sauce and a lemon wedge. (I would definitely add a few more wedges of lemon) It was 95 degrees outside and Tim quickly gave me water. I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc. Crisp and cold. I ask for a side of ice. Tim kept the side of ice refilled as soon as it melted.. It wasn't very busy when I arrived at Noon but when I was leaving at 1:00pm it was packed. The inside dining room and bar area was full and so incredibly noisy and loud it was deafening. In reading some of the recent (experiences) reviews- I don't understand why management thinks 5 customers at a table will ruin the intimate ambiance the are supposedly going for.. so sorry but that's outrageous. For years, I was a server who did not drink and I knew the basics of which Chardonnay is buttery. The kid's drink came in a tall glass, no lids, no straws. Jerome was an amazing server, attentive wth a great personality. He recommended the Crispy oyster appetizer special which was devine. Lightly battered with a nice going. It has been quite some time since I had been to Houston's, and while the views were lovely out near the water, I did not like the fact that you can only order drinks, no food could be ordered. We were hoping for appetizers. While our server was friendly and apologetic about the policy, not all staff was friendly. The bartender on staff was quite rude and even told some of my party they were too loud during a brief toast. I admit we did raise our glasses with cheers and a whoop, but it was indeed brief. It was quite shocking, as we were outdoors and it was rather loud with other patrons. I have heard from others recently that it is no longer the same Houstons as we remember, but I had high hopes. My girlfriend and I were headed to a concert in Pompano Beach and we wanted to eat dinner at Houston's before we attended the show. we had reservations. Long story short, they did not allow me into the restaurant since I did not have a collared shirt on. They said I was dressed too casually for dinner there. I proceeded to show them my American Express black card showing them I'm not some bum off the street.. I will never go there again. they lost a very good customer. Another thing that is ridiculous is they are "cashless restaurant" now. Last time I checked, this was still America and we use legal tender as well as cards. just another way for big brother (government) monitoring you in all you do and places you go. stop dining in restaurants that don't offer you a choice how to pay. it will be to a detriment to society when they decide to shut you off at will. mark my words. This place is crazy disorganized and understaffed. First when you get there you have to sign in on four lists. One for inside seating, one for outside seating, then one for bar seating inside and one for bar seating out side. So people come and out there names on all the lists and make all the wait times long. I've never seen a list for a bar. Then there are tons of tables open. Ordered the veggie burger and fries along with fried oysters and spinach dip. The fried oysters were amazing. It was seasoned well and the relish was really good. The spinach dip was good. The veggie burger was okay. It was a little mushy in the middle. I like it firm. The fries were good. We also had drinks which were delicious. Overall, great experience. The staff was courteous and helpful. Good and drinks were good. Nice environment and even though we helped closed the place down, the valet had the car out and waiting for us. What I love about this restaurant is that it's based on it on the most basic of principles "simplicity" We stated off with a bowl of Cabaret Chili topped with onions and cheddar not overly seasoned and very good, served with tortilla chips. I ordered the Ruby Red Trout which is a "simple" filet of fish, seasoned deliciously and cooked to perfection. It's paired with a nice cold, crunchy delicious coleslaw. The hubs had the special Double cut Pork Chop. Grilled perfectly, he enjoyed it but thought the mustard sauce was unnecessary since it was flavorful enough. His dish came with 2 sides. He chose the roasted peppers with feta and their delicious coleslaw, both were excellent. We ordered a side of Broccoli Reggiano, simply delicious. For dessert we shared the Apple Cobbler and Walnut Pie with Ice Cream, very good but a small scoop of ice cream. The servers are all exceptionally well trained and excellent. We will return. read more
