It gives me no pleasure to write what amounts to a downgraded review of a once beloved restaurant. My friend and I went to lunch today at Houston's. Over the years we've been many times. Specifically, I remember thinking that the burger and French dip were among the best in town. That's what we had today, along with the New England clam chowder. The clam chowder was excellent. It had bits of bacon in it, and though creamy and delicious it had a lighter feel to it than the more workmanlike versions served About Town. Sadly, the burger has been de-contented. It is clearly not the thick juicy burger. I've been served there before, though it certainly is still on the expensive side for a lunchtime burger at $22. Mind you it wasn't bad, but I hear Applebee's does something like this for $10 including your soda. My friends prime rib French dip with anything but. It was crumbly roast beef that fell apart. When I joked that they had re- targeted it towards Arby's, he said that Arby's was better, and Arby's doesn't charge $27. His coleslaw was too mayonnaisey for his taste, though I have to say my red cabbage and goat cheese side dish was as delicious as I remembered. This is a very pretty place to have lunch. Our server was good and the view on the intercoastal is lovely. However, in my mind, this is now clearly inferior to Kaluz, which has a similarly beautiful location, and has slipped to where it's not as good as it's Main imitator, J Aleksander, and frankly, I'm not sure it's even as good as J Mark Sf which I won't go to voluntarily. I will not be suggesting going back, and that's a pity. read more

HOUSTONS in Pompano is an intimate climate with dark rich colors and inviting but not overpowering music in the background. The art is vibrant. And being able to see the kitchen and watch the Chefs at work is a nice touch. Raegan was our server tonight. Beautiful young lady that presented well and good conversation. She checked on us throughout dinner yet not overbearing. She gave us a complimentary dessert because it was my husband's and I 12th wedding anniversary. The food was tasteful, well prepared, and presented. If you have never had a Veggie Burger before, HOUSTONS was very good. I couldn't eat all of it. It's huge! However, you must remember it's not a beef burger and the taste will be different. Nonetheless, it was good. The brownie dessert was awesome! The coffee grain that was added made a significant difference. The bathrooms were very clean and the rich colors followed as well. However, the low lighting does add to the ambiance but if you really needed to do some type of makeup "repair" etc I found it to be a little too dark to do so. Other servers stopped by our table to retrieve plates, glasses etc and were very polite. They worked as a team which was nice to see. Today we ate at Houston's in Pompano. We made a 1:30 reservation and we're seated promptly. They do not accept reservations for the patio, but have seating right along the indoor/outdoor area and the windows are all open so while indoors, you get the breeze and view. Our server was new, but very friendly and tried her best. We ordered a Fish (grouper) sandwich with baked potato (hubby), burger with ff (teen), and I had the veggie platter. **The platter is not on the menu but you can choose 5 sides from the menu and they are served on a large platter**. I only wanted 3 items so doubled up on the kale/peanut dressing salad; braised cabbage with goat cheese; and roasted peppers with french feta. The platter was ginormous and I had so much left over to bring home. Each item was very tasty and presented beautifully!! Towards the end of the meal, we ordered double espressos, served with a short glass of soda water to "cleanse the palate". Nice touch We did find that the service was slow, but we attributed that to the new server and/or staff shortages. However, apparently the kitchen was backed up and the lead server came over to apologize and then said our meal was comp'ed!!! I could not believe it. We didn't complain, they just felt our food delivery took to long and provided our meals on the house. Houston's has been one of my favorite staple restaurants for years. You can always count on two things when dining there: great food and great service. This specific location happens to be waterfront and had such a relaxing, chill vibe. My favorite items on the menu are: the salmon, trout, smoked salmon with toast points, jumbo shrimp cocktail, Hawaiian ribeye and last but not least the AMAZINGLY LUCIOUS brownie! They also have a variety of great side dishes including: broccoli, kale slaw (which is always on point) and the sautéed cabbage is tdf delicious. It sounds odd, but definitely worth a try! This is the second Houston's I have been to and I prefer the Boca location. The service was slooooooww. They forgot one of our beverages (just a coke) and were slow to ask for refills or if we needed anything. Long wait for a table, limited bar seating. read more

Could not be better. Perfect atmosphere. Valet was friendly. Greeted by friendly girl. Sat outside. Asian salad with chicken. Very good. Service is stellar. Love the light jazz music. This is the absolute best restaurant. I had the best meal of my life! I had the filet and my boyfriend had the artic char. The filet was seared and cooked to perfection. I had never heard of the artic char, but it was the best fish I ever had in my life. It had Cajun spice, buttery , and grilled. Omg, pure heaven. The dessert, apple,walnut cobbler was to die for, i always thought i made the best cobbler but I way wrong, it melt in your mouth and wasn't too sweet, perfection. Our waitress Kyra was so pleasant! Really disappointed Worst filet mignon ever I asked for medium I got a hockey puck sliced in half and the tiniest portion for the sides . They didn't even have any kind of steak sauce. I went for my husband and I's anniversary dinner. Great location, but very busy on a Saturday night. I definitely recommend getting a reservation. The chicken sandwich and ribs were amazing. We started with jumbo shrimp and spinach dip which was also great. Waitress and staff were very efficient and my drink was always being refilled. The bar area seemed to be crowded as well, not sure if it's from people waiting for their table or just enjoying the bar. Lighting was very romantic. All around will be back! read more

First thing you should know is you need to put ur name in for a table at the hostess stand for a table AND both bars for sitting at the bar. On a semi busy night we put our names in at all 3 places. Bar outside was busy. Unfortunately I don't think the bartenders could handle the business . 2 manager's stood to the right with little to no regard to the customers that were waiting for a table. Atmosphere is beautiful inside and out. Every dish we ordered was fantastic. We had shrimp cocktails ( great size shrimp nice and firm with 2 fantastic sauce's) artichokes ( over the top with great dips) the bread service- has amazing huge olives, trout and side dishes we ordered a fabulous including an apple dessert with huge delicious walnuts. I had a vodka martini and they comeback and change the glass so it's iced in the middle which I've never seen before. Service was also excellent. It's truly my favorite restaurant. read more

Loud, noisy, and rude But, innovative preparation of traditional food dishes such as Cole Slaw (with Kale) and Taboule made entirely with Kale instead of Parsley, with an added dash of corn and cucumber. The roasted chicken is ENORMOUS, a full chicken breast with wings attached. The grilled trout also well prepared, if a bit small. The grilled artichoke is AMAZING (that is if you are lucky enough to get one, and rich enough to pay $21 for an appetizer/veggie side.) While the waiter service is efficient, management is domineering, snobby, and RUDE. It's their way or "the highway" (a take it or leave it attitude), and this operation sticks from the top. The hat policy is always erratic at best. When I'm told to remove my hat and others including women are wearing hats I feel picked on. Policy should not have exceptions for women or men even though at this semi beach location, where many people are wearing shorts are also wearing caps or hats. One gets the feeling of discrimination at play when rules are not applied to all? There's an aloofness when brought to the attention of John the manager. In this day and age, I just don't feel it's necessary to approach senior citizens to remove a baseball cap . I used to come to Houston's by boat weekly and now I can't. I can't wear a cap to protect my balding head from skin cancer without feeling picked on while others in the restaurant have them on. What's next? There's just too many reasons to go elsewhere nowadays. Houston's prices are high and going higher regularly. Management is aloof. Attitudes are pretty stuffy although some servers are exceptions agreeing with me about the stuffiness and attitude toward hats. (I understand if a hat is offensive however. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! First I want to say I understand if a restaurant has a very strict rule for one thing or another. This was an extenuating circumstance and warranted a different outcome. We were 4 people and had an issue with our car. A friend who was helping my husband joined us and the front desk knew. 3 of us were seated, we ate an appetizer and ordered the food. We also waited an hour and a half for the table. The rest of our party sat down. A manager came over with a big smile on her face as though she was doing something nice and proceeded to tell us in a very fake passive aggressive voice that one person would have to leave. We were in a very big booth with plenty of room all the way in the back. We had a flight to catch so we explained we will be out quickly and our food was already ordered. She would not budge, was not at all apologetic and she absolutely should not be in a management position of any kind or dealing with people. All rules must have a place for extenuating circumstances and a human being who understands how to talk to people to carry that out. This fake and robotic way of handling this was beyond belief. Saying we never allow 5 people because we want an intimate dining experience here is absolute nonsense. It's about what the customer wants isn't it? NOT AT HOUSTONS!!! We have personally witnessed groups of 5 and this was ridicules!! All she had to do was explain, allow it because it was a different circumstance and she would have had people return. I come here to meet clients and friends. The artichokes are back and amazing. They have a fried fish sandwich for lunch and sometimes if they have extra, you can order it for dinner. Love the red cabbage side. They gave great mixed drinks and good wine selection. My friend always orders the Thai steak salad. The Fish Shack thanks Houston's for the business! I'd love to tell you about the food but we didn't get to experience it. There were 7 in our party - we were informed they only seat parties of 4. We were willing to sit at separate tables and get a separate check for each table but because we came in with "the intention of sitting together" that was not allowed. The only answer that was repeated - multiple times- was that they do not do split checks. Two tables, two checks, was not an adequate solution. The lack of common sense and inability to make a reasonable decision that would accommodate 7 people was astounding. In the past, Houston's has always been a reliable, consistent favorite, sadly that has changed. We enjoyed a great meal at The Fish Shack instead, they were happy to take our business. read more

Well, I learned something today: Some Houston's -- for example, Pompano Beach -- have *three* waitlists: 1 -- Main waitlist with the hostess (for tables) 2 -- Inside bar waitlist (must be placed with the inside bartender) 3 -- Outside bar waitlist (must be replaced with the outside bartender, if there is an outside bar) So -- unless you have a reservation and if you are flexible -- then you should immediately place yourself on all three waitlists. Food quality was terrific, per usual. The grilled chicken salad is simply amazing -- as always -- but I noted that the chain no longer serves it with garlic cheese toast. (Carbs! In Austin, the privatized Houston's location called "Bartlett's" still serves it -- and, while perhaps a shade decadent, it's simply fantastic!) The valet parking is a nice touch to help guests get in and out quickly. read more

Business dinner with client. Had reservations so no wait as we were seated promptly upon arrival. Service was excellent as we ended up with a trainer and their trainee. As expected wine selection was good and recommended wine was excellent. Had the shrimp cocktail and the spinach dip appetizers to start. The shrimp were very large and tasty and the spinach dip was also very good. The chips were excellent as they were warm, thin and crisp. Two had filets which were excellent and I had the Scottish Salmon that was delectable. The evening temp was spectacular so we ate on the patio and watched the boats go by. Beautiful evening topped off well with great food and service. I was disappointed in the dessert menu as there was nothing there to tempt me to further overindulge lol. read more

WHOEVER DOES THE HIRING AS THE MANAGER OR OWNS THIS ESTABLISHMENT NEEDS TO REEVALUATE THEIR PROCESS. if you take the time to read through the other reviews you will see this location has a serious issue with staff. The female "manager" on site that is referred to repetitively is disrespectful and discriminatory against "certain" people. That statement right there should be enough to have her removed immediately. This woman is on some kind of power trip and thinks that Houston's is her playing ground to ruin people's experience. After reading through this review thread I have no idea why they have not terminated this woman along with the other bartender/server (her friend) referred to as well. As a Florida native and since they opened this was by far the worst experience of my life. I will never come back here and will tell anyone I know not to as well. The on site female "manager" has zero customer service, resolution skills or respect for the customer. Not a good look for a long standing establishment. Embarrassed, harassed and disappointed by these two personnel would be putting it lightly. This is not how you should want your business or clients handled. True customer service is a dying art apparently. I can only assume after reading very similar experience reviews that whoever owns this location has no interest in keeping it open long term. I definitely reviewed this restaurant 3 years ago while on a Miami jaunt. Flying out of Ft. L was much more convenient and this restaurant was perfectly located for lunch before my flight. I recommend you go here at once if you haven't been. I'm not sure why my review disappeared? Over the last 24 years, I have visited almost all of the Houstons locations and I love them. They hit my sweet spot assessment of value based on the menu selection, service, food quality, and atmosphere. This location is particularly attractive, given the waterfront location. I find the food at all Houstons of the highest quality and expertly prepared. I first discovered Houstons at the Dallas location in 1996 and haven't looked back. I can't think of many places I can just go to at the drop of a hat and always be satisfied with the experience. For this reason, I choose Houstons as my first restaurant to visit in person during the "opening up" period. I live in Dallas, so-called the Belt Line location and secured a reservation for 7:30 pm Sunday, May 31st. While I wasn't totally at ease with returning to dining out, I felt Houstons would be my best bet. They recently had some upheaval due to policy with an employee but, I wasn't concerned with this. To my dismay, when I arrived at the restaurant I went to check in on Yelp and was given a notice that," all posting has been suspended due to recent news coverage"! What? I can't check-in and post about my meal at the First restaurant I chose to support, in this difficult time. I consider it censorship and encourage Hillstone to ask Yelp to remove any and all restrictions. Now for the review, of the Dallas location on Beltline. As I anticipated before arriving, there were probably going to be some issues albeit minor. So I was prepared but, open-minded. Overall, there were a few blips I won't go into. What I will say is, the food was good. Some of my go-to items are missing, which was disappointing but ,we made do. Their Hawaiian Rib Eye has always been good but, this visit I had the best steak from Houstons ever! Seriously, this is a great steak and I set the bar high on my meat. Exceptional, tender and cooked perfectly. I usually get one or two margaritas because there is not a better one in my opinion. However, I opted for a martini and it was perfectly shaken not stirred and frigid as an Antarctic Ice Berg! Finally, the mind-blower was the grouper sandwich. Now I'm registering a Dallas review on the Ft. Lauderdale site and I would wager their grouper sandwich would have a hard time competing. Outrageously good! some minor blips, we were shuffled out of the restaurant early because of the Dallas curfew. I later found out it didn't even affect this part of Dallas? No desert? One of the reasons I go to and have gone to Houstons is the Key Lime Pie! None offered, none taken. So in a nutshell, this review is for the organization in general. I find it to be a fantastically run restaurant group committed to high-quality food and the dinner's experience. I'm sure the ship will get back on track. This restaurant is located on the corner of Atlantic Boulevard and the Intracoastal in Pompano Beach. This is one of our favorite places to go. The inside is beautiful! The kitchen is all open and clean so you can watch the Chefs preparing your food. There's a big huge beautiful bar inside with lots of booths and a view of the intercoastal. But we like to sit out back by the patio for some fresh air in our beautiful tropical state of florida. The bartenders were extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and cocktails. I had the fried grouper sandwich and my bonus dad had a huge burger that was cooked to Perfection and he loved it. The bartenders on this Friday were Ish and Rachel. They made our experience really great. I would recommend anyone go here for the atmosphere the food and there's even Valet parking if you prefer. read more

It took a second sever to have an exceptional experience at Houston's, thanks in large part to the phenomenal service provided by Tyler. He was incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. The first server (forgot her name) that waited on us seemed like she was ready to go home. She said good morning at 2:30 in the afternoon and said the chilled shrimp does not come grilled when we didn't ask for that. She was kinda off today.
