Was strolling through the pearl enjoying my matcha courtesy of Yelp and decided to visit the food hall. What ultimately caught my attention was the screen picture of the smoked chicken salad. HOWEVER, they were out of said chicken salad so I ended up getting the olive pesto sandwich which has ham, turkey, olive tapenade, basil pesto, jalapeno cream cheese, pickled peppers and swiss cheese all made on sourdough. I must say I was a little skeptical of the olives since I'm not a huge fan, but I'm glad I ordered. everything went well together and the olive tapenade was delicious. I also got a side order of their beef tallow fried house chips which I enjoyed. I love a good homemade potato chip. Will be back to try that smoked chicken salad, glad to know there's other good things on the menu. read more

Howdy Child is located inside the food hall in the Pearl. Depending on the day you go, it can be packed or not too busy at all. We came here on a Monday night so it wasn't crazy busy. They specialize in sandwiches. We got the Turkey Olive Pesto sandwich and the Brisket sandwich. They serve it on a sourdough bread milled from local farmers. Texture was good. I researched places at the foodhall and this place was mentioned. I went on a Sunday, and since they have BBQ on the weekends that's what I ordered. I asked the person at the counter what is good here and what is recommended. I ordered the single plate which consists of 1/3 lb of pastrami, bread, pickled veggies, and BBQ sauce. Howdy Child serves the best pastrami in town! This delicious eatery is located inside the Food Hall at Bottling Department, but they also set-up a little pop-up during the farmers market. They are not located where most of the other food vendors are which I think is the main reason why they haven't received a lot of exposure. I was walking by their table and they offered a sample of their brisket. One bite was all I needed to know I had to get one of their pastrami sandwiches. For my first time I decided to go with half of their classic pastrami. The sandwich was absolutely perfection and by far my favorite thing I've tried at the farmers market. The meat was so tender and flavourful. I was blaming myself for not ordering the full size. The staff was also great, and they told me all about how they work with local farmers, not only for their meat but also their produce. It is nice to know a restaurant like theirs is supporting our Texas farmers. read more

Ordered the "Smoked Chicken Salad". The photo was drastically different than the sandwich in real life (nothing too serious). The chicken was moist, but insanely unseasoned and lacked any dimensional flavor It was good with Texas Pete from the BBQ restaurant nearby. Plus the digital menu at the register says the sandwich is $12, but when ringing us up, it was $12.99 - disappointed predatory pricing. As I bit into the sandwich, I felt something crunchy - out I pulled a piece of foil! [Pictured in the napkin]. My meal did not have any foil whatsoever so it killed my appetite. I spoke to the person who rang me up and another employee offered a refund or to remake it fresh. I declined both since I ate most of the sandwich already, and I didn't want to eat from there again unfortunately. Just needed to mention in case someone swallows it and cuts their throat internally. Probably one of the better Reubens I've had, I mean the bread to the cheese to the ratio, super delicious sandwich. Great customer service and they always seem very friendly despite how busy it gets. It's tucked away in a small food court at the Pearl and although it's small and crowded such a cool place to be. The vibes are positive and everyone is there to have a good time. Lots of dogs around and kids. Back to the Reuben, to me it's the best sandwich to get in the entire food court the only thing I'd change and wish they would add is a pickle spear that would just top it off. Wow!!! What an amazing experience. As a Jew, experiencing smoked pastrami was life changing. It's got incredible flavor and is super juicy! The staff have been very friendly the couple times we went. I was sad the menu online did not match what they were serving. We really wanted to try the beef tallow potatoes (I think that's what it was), but the pastrami sandwiches were so good it didn't even matter... We have also taken to getting a couple lbs of their pastrami when Pullman has their caraway onion rye bread available and the combo is out of this world. This was my 2nd time having Howdy child. Both times did not Disappoint at all. It's inside the food court at the Pearl. With so many delicious options to eat I still crave and dream about their Reuben/pastrami sandwich. This time around my husband and I tried half and half of the Reuben pastrami and the pastrami only! I loved both now I have to try something new when I return. I will have to say, the reason I didn't not give it 5 stars is because it doesn't come with any sides. My pointed out that a simple pickle spear would make such a difference and is definitely cost effective! Especially for their sandwich price! I usually get their sweet tea as well and it's also so yummy! Service is prompt despite how busy it gets at this food court. They have a texting system to notify the order is ready. The ambiance here is top notch as well with both indoor and outdoor seating. Very aesthetics pleasing inside the food court and the outdoor is beautiful as well with the Emma hotel as the backdrop with additional seating and shops all around. We opted for outdoor since we had our pup with us and the TX heat was brutal (warning). Overall great experience! I love it here and highly recommend! My family was recently visiting SATX and they enjoyed it here as well. :) read more

Definitely a no go in San Antonio. Put this on your list of places to avoid. The sides are horrible and inedible, the meat is flavorless, and whatever the red spice is... they put it on everything and it's absolutely disgusting. The sauce is lackluster, and the "wagyu" sausage isn't worth the name it comes with. What really put the icing on the cake today was the DJ playing for a room of 5,000 in a room of 200. Too loud, and he's a bad DJ, so that didn't help. Anyway, steer clear. Not worth it. I don't see it lasting past a few months. read more

I was a little nervous about trying Howdy Child since the Yelp reviews are so bad, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed the food! The 1/4 meat combo is actually a great deal at $14 for the amount of food that you get. I got the pastrami (it was excellent!) with pinto beans (very cumin-heavy). Mmm.. We moved to the Pearl 5 months ago. Just tried Howdy Child last night. I will first mention that we had just had dinner prior to walking by. The pastrami looked so good we had to try it. Well, it didn't disappoint. Very tender almost brisket like, not too fatty and tasted delicious. ( Having been in the business we know) We actually had the owner take care of us. Tried the smoked pastrami......it's amazing . Never really liked pastrami, but this is a lot like brisket with a complex flavor. Who knew warm pastrami would be so life changing. Got a salad that came with many different pickled veggies that added just the right blend of salty and savory with lots of healthy greens. For those that love meat but not the high carbs, they offer just the meat or can customize your order to fit your needs. Fast service. Friends staff. Worst brisket sandwich I've had in my life! First it's mixed with BBQ sauce which was not stated on the menu. When I inquired they said it's pre mixed that way and they didn't have any brisket with out the sauce. Once we sat down to eat and where fixing our sandwich with other fixings we noticed how dry and burnt the meat was, just horrible. Probably reason why they put the BBQ sauce. I didn't eat it at all, not one bite! And my husband whom usually will eat anything, ate a little and said this is terrible and was done with it too. Such a shame they would serve just horrible meat. Brisket was not good. it was very fatty and covered in BBQ sauce. Its a lazy way to cook brisket. If you have good brisket, you don't need to chop all the fat with the meat to give the appearance that the meat was tender.
