I first fell in love with the culture of Louisiana when I read Robert Penn Warren's "All The King's Men" I fell in love with it a second time when I first went to Howe's Bayou, and have fallen in love with it every time since. Technically, I should be avoiding any kind of spicy food due to confidential stomach issues, but every once in awhile I must entertain my devilish fancy, which includes cajun food. Sitting at a table outside, watching the cars zoom past on Woodward, downing a beer and tearing into some of the best crawfish cakes ever is simply sublime. The service here is both friendly and helpful, whenever you ask for a recommendation, they give you an honest answer and have yet to steer me wrong. Howe's Bayou - Mussels, French Bread and Shrimp! - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Ferndale, Michigan

Howe's has been our go-to place for the last eight years. Whenever friends come in from out-of-town they usually say, "Let's go to Howe's." We typically go one or two times per year. Service can sometimes be hit-or-miss and some days are busy and other days you can hear proverbial crickets in the place. But the food is typically tasty and novel when you have guests. The normal fair: pulled pork po' boys with a side of either garlic smashed or sweet potato fries, atchafalaya chicken, catfish, or Pasta N'Orleans. (I should note that only the husband eats the catfish. I don't eat bottom feeders.) On the whole these dishes are quite good and the quality is solid meal after meal. Some of the other entrees we've tried (last night's pork chop with homemade applesauce or the etouffee) haven't always been winners. They do have a decent wine and beer selection, with a select Michigan beer on tap at any given time. Last night it was Bell's Best Brown and it went pretty well with my pork chop and mashed sweet potato special, though I liked the beer better than the pork chop plate. Some days it's a two-star experience and some days it's five, so I think my "Yay! I'm a fan!" is pretty warranted. It's a good joint every so often and the owners are always nice. I want to give this location a better review but for some reason my experience last night was just OK. I came here 9 months ago and had the jambalaya and it was FANTASTIC. I left with a full stomach and leftovers to enjoy later. I loved it so much that I brought a big group last night and was disappointed. I first want to start by saying that the service was GREAT! The manager came over and talked with us and our waitress was definitely accommodating. We all ordered Po boy sandwiches. Two of us ordered the voodoo chicken, two the shrimp, and I ordered the perch. Everyone ate their sandwiches but we all felt they were slightly bland. We wanted the oyster po boy after the manager hyped it up but then we learned they were out of it. The perch sandwich was paired with a slaw and fried. I didn't realize that the slaw would be in the sandwich and because of this the bread started to get soggy very fast. Before the bread got soggy I was enjoying the sandwich- the bread was delicious. I also started with the lobster bisque. I thought it was tasty. The cornbread was good too. I am not going to give up on this location because there are few places to get cajun. I think if I come back I may just get one of their entree items and not the sandwiches. read more

The Creole is damn tasty. Howe's is the first restaurant that cooks a mushroom I can enjoy. If you get the veggie creole they top it with a sauteed portabella that is loaded with flavor. I usually order dishes with no mushrooms, so this tells you something!! The jambalaya is not as good as harbor house, but cheaper and certainly delicious. Sweet potato fries are killer and come with an outstanding dipping sauce. Staff is always real friendly and good at reading whether you feel like chit-chatting or not. Solid drink selection and you will get used to the antique/wood smell of the place. read more

Howe's may actually be my favorite place in Michigan. Everything is good! My most favorite thing on the menu is the Crawfish Bisque, you cannot go wrong, I can only eat a cup but to those lucky enough to handle a bowl I am green with envy. It's rich and buttery and is served with delicious corn bread. I love all the apps, my favorite is the calamari with the spicy pepper relish. I haven't tried all the entrees but I am working my way through, I love the Atchafalaya chicken probably because the corn maque choux is to die for or for those who prefer po boys those too are great, though I will say the pulled pork is not my favorite, blackened catfish is where it's at. Also when ordering sides I urge you to try the butter beans, I love them so much I make them at home. Also if you're not hungry and looking for a great place to grab a cocktail, the bartenders at Howe's are all gifted. Did I go to the same restaurant as everybody else? I went to Howe's Bayou with two friends recently, specifically because its advertised as a cajun/creole/ new orleans restaurant. Having lived in New Orleans 'Pre-K', I was excited to learn that I could experience a bit of Nola right here in metro Detroit. It was a disappointing experience. First, we waited a little over half an hour for a table. The bar was packed and there is very limited seating available in what I guess you could call the 'restaurant area'. Once we were seated, I immediately began perusing the 'Po Boy' section of the menu. I mean, what could be more New Orleans than a po-boy, right? The first sign of trouble was that there was no oyster po-boy on the menu. The second issue was that there was no option to order a po-boy 'dressed'. In New Orleans, when you order a po-boy, you specify that you would like it dressed; dressed po-boys get the mayo-lettuce-tomato treatment. The po-boys at Howe's Bayou, however, only have the option of arriving with whatever sauce or marinade (marinade!) is specified for that particular po-boy. Also, no turkey po-boy. For shame. I settled for a mushroom & marinated veggie po-boy. It arrived on what I will describe as a hoagie bun, not french bread. The lack of a good, strong, crust meant that the bun was soaked in marinade, to the point that the bun disintegrated and I ended up eating it with a fork, before I had even finished half the sandwich. The mac & cheese side that I ordered was basically shell pasta with melted American on top. My friend's mashed potato side arrived stone cold. Visited here twice. The first time, I ordered crawfish the second time, a shrimp poboy. Nice big juicy crawfish, but tasted like they were boiled in creole seasoning instead if seafood boil. Very salty, not flavorful. The poboy had jumbo shrimp with some type of coleslaw(nasty) which made the bread soggy and fall apart in your plate. I stopped in at Howe's Bayou for lunch and arrived just as they were opening the doors at 11am. As we were getting out of our car (we got the parking spot directly in front of the restaurant) the cook asked us if we were going inside. After we responded in the affirmative, he mentioned that he was going to run across woodward to pick up something for the day's special, but he would wait until we ordered so we wouldn't have to wait. That impressed me a great deal as he could have just ran right past us without considering us. We told him not to worry and go get his supplies, we'd be fine. 10 minutes later he returned and I overheard him asking the waitress if we had ordered yet, still concerned about our wait. I like that guy. The food here is good. While a bit tight, most of the great places to eat in Ferndale (Toast, Fly Trap, et al.) are. The decor and music playing overhead are very pleasant and appropriate. I ordered a cup of the gumbo and a fried shrimp po' boy while my companion requested the shrimp etoufee with mac and cheese for a side. We were informed a few moments later that they were out of the mac and cheese, so she asked for the dirty rice instead. The gumbo and etoufee were excellent. The shrimp on the po' boy was cooked to perfection, but I found the sandwich as a whole to be too dry. It did have a vinegar based slaw on it, but the bread overpowered it. I feel mean giving this place 1-star. Really, I hate giving such a low rating but the food was so bland and flavorless I literally felt like I was eating at a nursing home where not a hint of flavor was permitted lest the succulent flavors unduly stimulate the vital organs of the aged patrons. I loveeee Cajun food and was expecting good Southern flavours to compliment our seafood - judging from the yelp reviews this place seemed like it would fit the bill. For starters, we had the oyster po boy and the crawfish popcorn. I was expecting fresh seafood flavour; the mildly sweet and succulent flavour that fresh seafood has- and yet I honestly couldn't even tell that I was eating oyster or crawfish underneath the light breading. There was a little bit of seasoning used in the breading but the oyster and crawfish itself tasted like NOTHING. After a few bites (for the sole purpose of removing the hunger pangs), we pushed the appetizers aside and prayed that the entrees would be better. For entrees, I had the blackened cat fish with dirty rice and my boyfriend had the crawfish etoufee. Again the catfish tasted like nothing - the texture was limp and watery and it certainly didn`t taste `blackened` - the fish didn`t taste like catfish... it tasted like nothing, the dirty rice tasted like Uncle Ben`s. My boyfriend`s crawfish etoufee looked and tasted like a goop of orange flour with a touch of onion powder stirred in - we could not taste even a hint of crawfish or seafood. Honestly at this point we both felt robbed and just wanted to head to the Fly Trap around the corner to get proper food. The service was also sad. The waitress only came to bring us the menu, the food and the cheque - no small talk, no recommendations when we asked- never asked how we were enjoying our food, never checked on whether we wanted refills (we had to flag down her colleague for this) - which was inexcusable as the place was empty aside for another couple sitting in the patio. It was definitely a peculiar experience to have this kind of service after all the rave reviews on here. Because of the rave reviews, I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt - that is the only reason why I may give it two stars... I am an optimist and am hoping that the only reason the food was so bad was because their chef was having a bad day. read more

Chicken Jambalaya Garbage. I stopped in Tuesday about 4:45pm. I ordered cup of gumbo soup, it was luke warm definitely not fresh. Corn Bread was bone dry. The star of the show Chicken Jambalaya complete garbage. It tasted old not fresh, over cooked, so hot couldn't eat it for 10 minutes because it was microwaved so long. I decided to email the restaurant and got a response back from Mike Hennes. I asked him how the Jambalaya was prepared and he told me its prepared in big batches in the morning and put in a soup well, instead of making it fresh per order. My guess is I got Jambalaya that was days old and over microwaved. I had also checked Google and Yelp and found 2 other reviews, the yelp was only 10 days before mine, both had same issues about Jambalaya like mine. I mentioned this to Mike Hennes and he just made excuses instead of accepting accountability. Mike Hennes if you knew this happened before why would you let this happen again? came here with two friends for drinks and as a bonus, one of friends loves crawfish! however, their crawfish are frozen so she decided that we wouldn't be getting them. fortunately, there were a few other good things. we had appetizers of the voodoo shrimp, the fried oysters, and sweet potato fries. the voodoo shrimp was recommended by our waitress, but i didn't really like it. it came on rice and the sauce just tastes like barbecue, maybe some worcestershire? i also was not a fan of the sweet potato fries. i always think one of the great downfalls of the sweet potato fry (an otherwise sound concept) is that they usually come out soggy. some places do a great job with them but it's rare. here, they were long rectangular strips i think. but they were long and soggy. the best thing was the fried oyster!! they were so crispy and hot on the outside, perfectly breaded and fried. the insides were gooey and delicious, not rubbery at all. the spicy mayo-ish sauce it came with was fantastic too, though it's hard to go wrong with mayo-ish sauces. it's a good place to get a drink if you don't get anything fancy, i think. one of my friends ordered a sazerac, and it didn't taste like a sazerac at all. it even had a maraschino cherry in it. they were really nice about taking it back and she traded it for a vodka tonic which was super super strong so she didn't end up drinking it. i totally would have if i didn't have to drive that night. haha. i was happy with my beer though, so you probably can't go wrong with that. the atmosphere is casual. i kind of thought it was a dive bar when we first came in. all the wait staff we encountered were super nice too. might be a cool place to hang out again some time. i'd come back. read more

This is a small dimly lit bar with a New Orleans flair. Stopped in here to avoid the rain this past weekend. Only planned on having a drink until the rain stopped but could resist the fried oysters on the menu. I had never had them before, but my boyfriend convinced me to give them a try and I'm so happy I did. They were delicious. Perfectly fried and the sauce that came on the side just finished it off. All I have to say is holy $%#!, Howe's is pretty damned amazing! I had the crawfish bisque to start - words cannot describe how phenomenal it was! The friends we were with started with the andouille encrusted pan fried oysters - also fantastic. For dinner, I had the Pearl River Pasta (I love me some seafood & pasta!). It was sooo good, and a really big serving - I ended up having enough for lunch the next day, too. The boy got the Voodoo Chicken Po' Boy, and I'm pretty sure I would've stolen it from him if he let his guard down! So yesterday was absolutely gorgeous out and my boyfriend and I wanted to go somewhere and have dinner on a patio. Lucky for us (or so I thought) we had a coupon for this place and it said "Patio now open!!". We got there and walked in and it's like the darkest restaurant on the planet, which is fine with me since I'm going to be sitting on the patio, right? WRONG! Their patio doesn't open until May something. So...I'm not sure why they are advertising that their patio is open when it isn't, but anyways...we weren't mad, it smelled fantastic in there so we sat down at a table. The service here was AWESOME! Unfortunately, that's where the good experience ended for me. We ordered the whitefish dip which was served with Saltine crackers...it was okay but nothing special. For our entrees, we both ordered the blackened catfish since it got great reviews on here. Maybe we got a bad batch or something, but neither of us liked it at ALL. To me, it tasted like spicy nothing. The fish was CAKED in blackening spice, so much that we were both sweating and gulping our waters like we were in the Mojave Desert - the fish underneath tasted like nothing. The rice was nothing special and my greens were standard. This was my first visit to Howe's Bayou, so it may be different on other days who knows. First of all, to get anything good on the menu expect to pay about $15-$20 per plate, otherwise your going to most likely end up with an $8 sandwich like me. Second of all I waited a long time for my sandwich, pretty much everyone was waiting for their food though. Third, for as much as they were charging for their food, i'd expect a nicer, cleaner restaurant rather than the average bar setting that it was. Also, I really didn't think that the food was that good (I had a voodoo chicken sandwich), I've had much better Cajun food elsewhere (obviously not around here, because there is no other Cajun food place around here). We put our name on the list, but found two seats at the bar and decided to eat there. It had the fake voodoo, jazzy vibe you would expect from a New Orleans joint in Michigan. Christina ordered a banana's foster martini and I ordered a Stoli martini with no vermouth, bleu cheese olives and a smidge of olive juice. The red wings game was beginning its second period and everyone seemed super friendly. Our bartendress was one of those don't fuck with me kind of girls that you could picture working at Ed Debevic's, but I liked her. We ordered the white wine garlic mussels, crawfish bisque and shrimp pasta dish (It was called something, but I'm far too lazy to look it up) Mussels were awesome mainly because of the bread. Super soft and garlicky, a perfect butter / white wine reduction soaker. Bisque was perfect. Christina complained about the crawfish being cold at first, but I liked the way it heated up through the course of eating the soup. The shrimp pasta came and it was okay if you included a little bit of the cornbread in your bite. It had heat, but it didn't have mad flava, and you know I be loving mad flava son! Sorry, slipped into my Marky Mark circa 1992 alter ego. I will definitely come back to Howe's Bayou. The entree was only $15 and everyone seemed cool. Cajun man approves!! read more

Howe's Bayou had no wait when my boyfriend and I went at a busy time on a Friday night. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer and it was incredibly delicious; the best spinach artichoke dip we've ever had. My boyfriend ordered a beer, and I ordered the Blanche special, and it was tasty! We also got po' boys, and the Voodoo chicken one was by far the better one. Stopped in for lunch to get a taste of New Orleans. The food was great! I hadn't been in a few years even with living so close. Both my friend and I were asking ourselves why we don't come more. The drinks were good and strong. I ordered the shrimp pasta. It was very flavorful with veggies and generous with shrimp. It was served with cornbread and was a decent size for lunch. My friend ordered the shrimp po boy and liked it, she did not love the slaw. We splurged and split the peach cobbler. It was served warm and went great with our bourbon. Howe's Bayou - Shrimp pasta and shrimp po boy. - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Ferndale, Michigan

There is nothing authentically cajun about this place, based on what I tried. I'm from the dirty south and this place made me weep for home. I decided on the basics - red beans and rice. The andouille sausage was flavorful, no complaints there and the rice was fine. The beans, though, it was like they had oxidized or something. As in, maybe they were old or had been left out. They were whiteish and crusty and viscous. They tasted okay and didn't make me sick, but I didn't eat the leftovers. My partner had the crawfish etouffee and I was excited for her to try it, since she's never been to NOLA. The crawfish was definitely frozen, which I expected, but it wasn't defrosted correctly or had frostbite or something. I've made etouffee from frozen crawfish before and it didn't taste watery and flavorless like this did. The other offense to the dish was that it was overdosed on corn starch and turned into a gelatinous blob. The flavors were fairly mild and definitely not bold. Zatarain's or Tony Cuchere's needed to called in to help these sad flavors. The worst offense, though, was the bread pudding. It wasn't even a close approximation to bread pudding and that was the main thing that wanted to make me weep. It had no moisture to it. It was all bread and no pudding (even though that's not exactly what bread pudding is). We may have hit it on an off night, but every dish failed and I have no interest in returning. Based on what we ate, I'm not convinced any of the chefs or cooks have ever ventured south of the Mason Dixon line or have at least had authentic cajun food before. read more

Had a great experience this evening at Howe's Bayou. It all started with our service. A girlfriend and I went out for dinner and Jizell was our waitress, She was amazing!! If only every waitress was like her. The two of us started out with some rosè because it was national rosè day and how could you not celebrate? We then each got the gumbo ya ya which was amazing. For our entrees We both ordered specials, my friend ordered a bucket of crawfish which was so entertaining and by the looks of it, delicious! Jizell suggested we take pictures and boy did we. So fun. What this place lacks in actual Bayou food knowledge they make up for in trying! Had the fried oysters, crawfish lobster bisque, gumbo, voodoo blackened chicken, and jambalaya as our dinner order. First off wait staff is very accommodating and friendly which is nice and beer selection rings true to the new age craft beer selections offered anywhere. The bisque and the gumbo were decent, especially when sauced up with some hot sauces found on the table. Fried oysters were nothing special. They could have been fried anything and tasted the same. Jambalaya was mostly tomato, with little else to taste beyond that. Blackened voodoo chicken was nothing more than pretty decent grilled chicken on a bed of rice. Without the sauce it was nothing. Could have gotten that anywhere. They also love to bring dry, crumbly corn bread as a free side to any soup or dish. While sweet it lacked the true stickiness of a good sweet corn bread. It's just a good way to break up the monotony of their spicy to the ordinary person's palate. Overall glad I tried it but Nawlins will never be beat! read more

My boyfriend and I stumbled across Howe's Bayou after a restaurant we wanted to go to had a long wait time and I'm really glad we did! I feel like this little place is one of those best kept secrets. I wasn't even aware that there was a creole restaurant in Ferndale. My favorite thing to order is the fried catfish with mac & cheese and collard greens as a side along with the complimentary corn bread. The food was very hot and fresh, and the portions were huge. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. For me personally, I find it kind of pricey, but that might just be because I'm cheap. My meal was probably between $15-$17. Still an okay place to go for Creole but you will get less food at a HIGHER price. The menu recently changed to a la carte and the price per entree significantly increased. For example, my long time favorite New Orleans Pasta dish was $15 (already expensive) and was served wIth a side dish and a piece of corn bread. Today you ONLY get the pasta dish with a smaller piece of corn bread and the price is now $17. Wow how does that make sense to pay a lot more and get less? Howe's is already making more money by discontinuing the side dish with the pasta but then to increase the price of the a la carte pasta? And to increase it not by $1 but $2??? is just plain GREEDY!!!! I understand restaurants must change their menu and reasonably increase prices in order to survive but not how they did it. Nice, easy vibe; dark wood, tried-and-true comfortable seating. Mostly a local bar, but don't let that fool you - they have a great Cajun menu too! I had the Crawfish Étouffée, with collard greens as a side - perfect! Not overdone in an attempt to prove they are legit Cajun, not down played to appeal to the bland Midwest pallette. The collard greens were done just right, not swimming in liquid like some pseudo southern places offer. Beer list is Michigan centric, as it ought to be, with a wide enough selection to have something for everybody. All in all, I'll be back. Great relaxed vibe, great food, low key atmosphere. read more
