The service is friendly and well intentioned, but yup, the food is still kind of meh. For starters we were really excited to get some raw oysters but they no longer serve them because of some health code rule that the server was trying to explain to us. We opted for their calamari instead. It's OK enough but the pepperoncini relish is more like ground up pepperoncini without any real relish flavor. It's pretty basic fried calamari. For entrees, my girl ordered the Jambalaya and the Voodoo BBQ spiced shrimp plate with rice. It was shrimp on rice with a brown sauce...the rice tasted a little like it was cooked in coconut milk while the Voodoo sauce had no heat and no real Cajun flavors going on and was more like a plain roux. I had the Mississippi Farm Raised Catfish dinner, blackened, with dirty rice. Again, it was OK but pretty run of the mill and a small filet taboot. My be I'm biased since I know what real NOLA Cajun food it about. I ordered something simple since I know I'm always disappointed when I try Cajun food, I ordered a shrimp Po boy. Bad idea! Shrimp was over cooked to a point of being burnt. The French bread the Po boy was made of was hard and stale, over all, it was pretty bad! Do yourself a favor, and just order a drink! read more

I am not sure at what point this became a regular haunt for me. Years ago, I remember coming here intermittently and feeling somewhat apathetic about my experience. Gradually, over time, Howe's has grown on me. It's my almost quiet, but somehow not, place for a good cocktail, a really decent meal (I swear dish quality keeps improving); or, late evening bowl of delicious gumbo or olfactory stimulating bisque (sherry, cream, butter is the best French idea ever). I should also recommend bartender Kirk. He somehow always makes my experience exactly what I am seeking: a kind of relaxed laid back vibe juxtaposed with a feeling of stimulating conversation. Kirk will not hesitate to make a food recommendation on or off the menu, which is refreshing given almost every other server's desire to be politically correct these days. Anyway, if you go to Howe's, ask bartender Kirk when they will have Lobster night again? Best night. they need to revisit that....one last thing: while writing this, I mentioned the joys of bisque and then my phone died...Kirk brought me a small cup of bisque and an iPhone charger. I tried the blacken catfish meal here and was pretty disappointed. It was definitely spicy but i felt like most of the taste was just spicy and burnt. The blacken part is suppose to be the burnt pRt right? Kinda didnt enjoy my meal much, maybe if it wasn't burnt. We also had the oysters here and i thought it was mediocre. I think toms oyster bar has better grades on oyster. This place has some cool names for drinks and seems busy, ill have to come back and get drinks. Prob not the food since i didnt find any of the dish that great (tried my friends too) , especially for the price. Portions are regular, but i guess i expected more since i am paying $18 for a catfish meal, came with 3 filet of catfish, kinda small, talapia size, but i guess my expectations were a bit high considering its cajun/southern food & price. Corn bread was dry, no one even ate it after we had the first bite. Maybe it was old? Kinda disappointed since this place had good reviews. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with the strong smells of Louisiana. This place definitely is popular on the weekends. It's not the biggest facility in the world, so crowds are to be expected. I love Jambalaya, and it is pretty tasty here at Howe's Bayou. They also have a full bar here, and the bartenders take good care of you. The only gripe is parking in Ferndale, especially on a weekend night. read more

This was my first visit to Howe's Bayou. It isn't the best Cajun place in town, but what we had was good. The standout for me was actually the butter beans. They were fantastic. Creamy, smoky with bacon and just the right level of acid from tomato, salt and pepper. The remoulade was also quite tasty. The dirty rice was incredibly flavorful. The catfish and andouille breaded oysters were good not great. Both had a bit of metallic flavor that is common but not desirable. The cornbread had good corn flavor, was cakey and crumbly and not sweet or gritty. We were there before the dinner rush. There was ample seating and efficient service. read more

Celebrated my 40th B-Day by having dinner with friends and family. We had a great experience from top to bottom. We were sat quickly (party of 10 with kids) and greeted within a minute. Atmosphere was pretty chill. Our server was cool and gave us honest recommendations. I ordered 3 apps. The calamari had a great sauce and the chicken fingers has a sweet sesame flavor. The gumbo was on point! My favorite side was the mac n cheese. I would order the voodoo chicken again over dirty rice instead of greens. My wife had the catfish with sweet potato fries. What she didn't finish, I ate the next day. Drinks were made stiff and the shots we ordered were like doubles. Overall, we had a great experience and we will be back. read more

Having had some real creole, they get pretty damn close. There is no shortage of portions and the drinks are good and strong. Only downsides are lack of accessible parking and a generally very small space. I keep this one high on my sneaky-favorite list and only take one or two people at a time since I'm not always sure there will be room for more. read more

Food is just so so - definitely nothing extraordinary. With a couple of exceptions - the oysters (which they are often out of) and the bread pudding. I love bread pudding and it is amazing here. It's really the only reason I come back. BUT I am disapointed every time I do. Disapointed by the lackluster food and especially by the service. It is terrible. Even on nights that aren't very busy it's sloooowww. And the staff never checks back to see if u need anything. I suggest ordering 2 drinks at a time. read more

It's pretty good but not the best Cajun I have had in the area. The gumbo was good but could have been much spicier. The mac and cheese was okay but nothing special. The cornbread was a little dry so I ended up dunking it into my gumbo. The service was good and the food came out promptly. I came here with my fiance as an early birthday date on the 9th...my birthday was the 10th. When we first walked in, there was a hostess who greeted us immediately. The place was pretty full but the wait was only about 3 mins. We were seated and placed our drink orders...water. I had pre-read the menu online and read other yelper's reviews so I already knew what I wanted. We started off with Spinach Artichoke dip. It was impeccable! For entree I ordered the Jambalaya which had chicken and andoullie (sp?) sausage with a side of tasty sweet potato fries. It was served with cornbread that they should have kept...probably the blandest i've ever had. It's all good though because the jambalaya was bangin!!!! My fiance ordered a chicken Caesar salad. He loved the salad but disliked the dressing in which he replaced for ranch. He gave the ranch a thumbs up. We ordered the bread pudding for desert. At first the texture took some getting use to...it was a bit soggy. But WONDERFUL flavor nonetheless! My fiance loved it! We'll be back soon. read more

We have dined here several times and I don't know why, but I'm always surprised with how good everything is. The food is good, but not overly expensive. The drinks are good and strong, and the staff always seems very friendly. I had the Beef Stroganoff, and it was very good. (Although the beef was a little bit chewy). I also had the crawfish bisque and it was AESOME!! My gorgeous wife had the Cajun Shrimp Po' Boy. She said it wasn't the best she ever had, but very good and better than other shrimp po' boy being served at some of the other local establishments. We will be back! read more

The waitress recommended many good options and was able to offer substitutes for items she thought we might enjoy more. The crab bisque was to die for. My sister and I were looking forward to a perch dinner on Friday night and wandered into Howe's Bayou around 6:00pm. There were only 4 tables inside with customers so we figured we could have dinner and be out before the Friday night crush. We were seated by the hostess and sat and sat and sat while 3 male waiters walked past us in slow motion. None of them smiled, none of them looked at us or greeted us and they were, frankly, sloppy, unprofessional and they looked miserable. After almost 15 minutes we got up and headed for the door. We walked down to The Fly Trap and we didn't get the perch we wanted, but were greeted and served promptly and enjoyed our dinner. We had the artichoke dip and Shrimp Creole. The artichoke dip itself was great, but then they completely ruin it by giving it with these really cheap, half stale, poor-tasting crackers. The Shrimp Creole was good though, but the corn bread that came with it was not impressive and cold. Overall, this place just isn't there yet. They need to fix a lot of the little things. Had interesting selection of beers though, which was nice. I would not currently recommend this place. The atmosphere is OK.
