I'd been a longtime fan of Hubcap burgers since their location in Kemah so I was really looking forward to having dinner dur a mid week break in Galveston. I should have known it was going to be bad when I was the only person there. I ordered a patty melt and fries. What I got was a bacon cheeseburger and the driest most burnt fries I've ever eaten. I didn't send the burger back because I really couldn't be asked. It was cold, burnt, salty AF and cheese was slimy. obviously the you surfer dude who cooked it and brought it out couldn't less what I ordered or what he served. I really want to try them again. I feel like I'm missing something because I hear such great things about them. However my visit went like this: walked up to counter to put our order in, tried to get a couple pints of brew but were out of . They were waiting on the delivery, okay no problem. Got a mermaid drank $17, price revealed at check out, okay no problem. Got the appetizer sampler to share and sat down with our number. Several parties walked in, most of which for burgers and were brought to them. Checked in at the counter for an ETA. Told it's coming and they are working on it, okay no problem. Waitress stopped by to drop off some burgers, we didn't order burgers. Tried again with a salad, nope just waiting on the sampler platter. Credit to our group we knew going into this it would probably be a wait, every restaurant had a sign up for help wanted and tourists were out in full force. We told the waitress we knew she was working hard and that we saw her running food non stop so her checking on our order meant alot to us. Once we she looked into it for us it was about 10 minutes later and it was missing an item. When that came out they were frozen on the inside. From what I could see and have been told, burgers are the way to go. If food takes longer than 20 minutes on the norm it mentions this on the menu, great way to set expectation. The waitress seemed really busy and on top of it as best as she could and than a couple fellas behind the bar that could have helped run food if they had a moment. First, because my husband now uses a walker, we are beginning to rate on accessibility of a business. Unfortunately, Hubcap Grill is not very accessible. There are a number of 6" or higher step-ups in order to get into the restaurant. The plus is that someone at the restaurant did try to help my husband get his walker in. I don't believe a heavy wheelchair could navigate the steps. We had to go to the bar to order, get a number, and then wait at the table for our food. They were good at bringing refills and taking care of our needs at the table. Next, the decor. The decor was so fun! A multitude of bright silver hubcaps line the beautifully carved, wooden walls like fine china in a high priced mansion. A mermaid statue, a crystal chandelier, and big screen TVs come together to create a fun, eclectic dining experience for both young and old. It's a visual feast! Now the food. We ordered a Philly cheesesteak (1/3 lb) that comes smothered peppers, onions, Swiss cheese, and a special sauce. We wanted to try both the sweet potato fries and the onion rings, so we ordered both. Finally, we took home a Black Forest cake for dessert. The burger itself was delicious - it was thick and juicy and had great beefy taste; the peppers and onions were cooked just right and the bun was soft and fresh. But, what we didn't like was the sauce. Apparently, Galveston likes Cajun seasoning and I believe that is what was in the sauce. As someone who comes from the Philadelphia area, I did not like the sauce, especially on my Philly steak! This is purely taste, so if you like cajun seasonings, you'll love it. The onion rings were the prize of the day. They used Panko crumbs so the breading was perfect; just the right amount of oil and lots of real onion - not minced pieces. A+ The sweet potato fries tasted good but I couldn't get past the texture. They were soft, not crispy. A bit too oily. Maybe a bad batch. Finally, the dessert. We took it home and ate it after dinner. Unfortunately, we only ate a few bites. It was exceedingly sweet. If you like really sweet, lots and lots of icing, you'll like it. But not our taste. I hope that helps you decide. I will probably go back and try a burger without the sauce. read more

Great little spot! It gets VERY busy and when we were there, only 1 person was taking orders and making drinks so it got pretty backed up. The bloody mary is delicious with a smoky flavoring to it. Also a must try are the cheese curds and cheese fries. We got the philly cheese steak burger which can, but doesn't, come with lettuce or tomatoes so ask for it if you want it. The best burger I've had in a long time and it's REALLY big so is perfect for sharing. Great ambiance too! read more

Originally was brought out a sandwich with a small piece of chicken and was told I'd be brought out a new sandwich because of it and that I could "eat this one if I wanted to" so I bit into the first - chicken was too tough to even bite into properly. A second sandwich was not brought out, but just a piece of chicken. At this point it putting the sandwich and chicken together was not happening as they gave me nothing to so - I had to use my hands. This is a great place to grab a burger, they have typical burgers as well as specialty burgers! We ordered a philly cheese steak burger, but unfortunately they had run out of steak, so we settled and got a double decker instead since that was the only burger of comparable price. Be prepared for very slow service. It took about an hour to get our food. After we saw several tables get there food before ours, we asked and immediately ours came out. I'm Sure it was good when it was still warm, but everything was cold. The Hubcap Grill is located in the historic strand in Galveston and the architecture in the area is amazing! Truly a must see experience. All the items are a la carte, burgers, sides, and drinks. There are no soda refills and you have to buy another drink if you want more. Any who, I had the Blue and Black Burger with some Buffalo Fries and everything was delicious. The burger was devine; huge with just the right amount of fillings. You could definitely share a burger and fries if you didn't want to over indulge. I really wanted onion rings unfortunately those were not in the menu. I had to go with an order of fries. The buffalo fries did have a little too much blue cheese and buffalo sauce for my liking, I should have asked for them in the side. They asked us to come up to the bar to order but brought out the food. The burgers were amazing and huge. We did get the bacon cheese fries and I was disappointed. Next time I would get onion rings. Friend told me about this place so we decided to check it out. It went okay. When we walked in, an unpleasant smell struck us and the table was all sticky. Service to order was fine, we had to go to the bar to order. I was there before Happy Hour ended and when I tried to order something from it, the guy said "It ended at 6PM, it's 601PM". I had the Texas BarB-Que Burger-filled with delicious smoked sausage and a deliciously textured hamburger Patty! First it visually made you want sing, second the first bite started me to humming, and the third thing-my next bite-was so good I was humming and dancing! This was our second visit to this location. It was our anniversary so we were thinking what a cool place to go. They were out of my favorite beer so I was disappointed and let it be known. But was willing to go with another light beer. And we wanted to try some food and were told one item was not available so we went with frito chili pies that were pretty decent. I ordered one bowl and one cup. We got two bowls. My issue was the rude lady at the bar taking orders. After she knew I was not happy about not having my preferred beer ... she started being sarcastic and referring to me in third person to the bartender(nice Guy) And then her friend came in so instead of listening to me try to work through what I wanted to order... she carried on with her and made me wait. To order. I did tip her because it is obvious that woman can't get a job anywhere else with that ugly acting. The table server was prompt and nice. I don't think we will go back. We only went there because Naked Iguana has a menu from them. This past year I have been wanting to try out the Hubcap grill and today was finally the day. Hubcap Grill is located in the historical strand district of Galveston island. I tried the southern fried chicken sandwich and the stinky fries. The chicken sandwich is tasty, made with a brioche bun, pimento cheese spread, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeños. The stinky fries are a must-try if you like garlic and vinegar. My better half ordered the jalapeño cheeseburger and he was not disappointed. We will defiantly be back again! read more

It is only fair that we review again. We were not true to our word and we did not hang our hats with Hubcap, and I am sure glad we didn't!! There has been a staff change and it absolutely shows! Showed up Labor Day and sat at the bar as we always have done in the past and was greeted immediately and with a smiling face. Matt ended up taking care of us on our visit and did a phenomenal job! I will say that I was happier with my food than my husband was, but I just ordered better. I had the southern fried chicken sandwich and it was phenomenal. He had one of the waygu hotdogs, but didn't much care for the cook on it. We also ordered the stinky fries and mentioned that it would have been better if the garlic kissed the grill just a tad instead of minced garlic straight from the fridge. We also indulged in the cheese curds which were typical but good. Finally we took home a piece of the lemon blueberry lavender cake and as always it was outstanding.
