My family and I were so excited to try this spot out as we have heard nothing but amazing things. We stopped by after our visit at the African art museum a little before 5pm on a Friday. However, when we got there they had a sign stating they would reopen at 5:30pm. So we decided to wait in the parking lot in the meantime as so did some other patrons. Once they opened, it took some time to get our orders in which was fine since we were trying decide what we wanted eat anyways. After we ordered, more people started to come in and it's a tight space inside. We patiently waited and it took about an hour for us to get our food. We went to our car to eat as the outside patio seating was still wet from the on and off rain. The turkey wing was very tender and tasty. The meat was juicy and fell right off the bone. The yellow rice had some hard pieces in it so that was no bueno. We all agreed that the mac and cheese was the best side, very cheesy and al dente noodles. I was not a fan of the collard greens as I like my greens to be slow cooked, tender and soft. The stems of the greens were hard and you can tell they were cooked quickly. Overall, I understand everyone has off days and based on the reviews, they are typically good. But I believe maybe there were some issues with staffing as to why they opened later and took so long for our orders to be prepared. When I return to Savannah, I would give them another go around to try out another meal, especially since the ambience inside was a cute vibe.

Super tender, moist and covered in a savory gravy. You select two sides. I love the CORN BREAD and BAKED MAC N CHEESE. I haven't tried any other sides yet. Corn bread is fluffy and buttery with touch of sweetness, while not being sweet. Baked mac n cheese is just pure goodness. This is delcicious down home cooking. It is comfort food. The owner is super friendly and hospitable. She works the order counter and I suspect she is integral in the food prep.

We were challenged by the neighborhood beggars inside and outside. The food was okay nothing to rave about. The best part was the Mac& cheese. The collards taste out the can with no seasoning and the pot roast had no flavor. I first had scraps of the pot roast but asked for more meat and I was willing to pay. Meals were served in carry-out container and we used plastic utensils. The total was about $48.00. This meal was not worth that much especially being served with plastic items. I would not vote this resturant as the best soul food.

Seriously some of the best food I've ever had. First time ever having oxtail (literally fall off the bone), mac and cheese and spinach. All of it top top notch!

I've lived in Savannah for a few months now and eaten pretty well. This was hands down the best meal I've had since moving here. And the service was not just friendly but warm and welcoming. I will be back a LOT.

Every time I come and trying something new the food gets better. And the owner (Rachel) is such a beautiful person. Her daughter is always nice and helps me make up my mind when I'm too hungry to make a decision. ‍

Came across this location through a yelp search. The young lady taking our order was very polite and friendly. Funky classic rnb playing in the background. Indoor deco was like an indoor garden. Great variety of items on the menu. ( breakfast is served all day) I opted for the fried shrimp rice plate that included two sides. (10 medium shrimp on a bed of yellow rice- white rice is also and option, macaroni and cheese and greens so good make me wanna slap your mama lol) I highly recommend!!

This small restaurant packs in the seating with booths and 2 to 4 seat tables. One customer was busy on their computer while a few others were visiting while waiting for their order. You'll find plenty of vegetable and protein, comfort food choices here. Order at the counter and your meal will be brought to you. Fried okra, Mac & Cheese, pork chops smothered and covered & fried chicken are a few of the choices here. Our "to go" 2 piece fried chicken came with choice of white or dark meat, side of white or yellow rice and your choice of 2 sides. The fried chicken was hot, crispy, juicy deliciousness! Friendly Service, But Food Missed the Mark The place was packed when we visited, which gave it a nice, lively vibe. Service was warm and inviting, and the staff really made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite measure up. Most dishes were overly salty (though to be fair, we usually cook with very little salt), and the chicken breast was dry and lacking flavor. The food here is amazing!! We had lunch during our visit. The fried shrimp was hand breaded and so fresh and crunchy. I had the turkey wing with collard greens and mac and cheese. Everything was clearly made with care and love! Rachel was so sweet and welcoming. The cakes and banana pudding looked so good but we were stuffed. We will be back on our next visit to Savannah. We were in Savannah & decided to leave the tourist strip to find some real soul food. What a great choice Simple Soul was! We live in Kentucky, the land of "Fried Chicken". Of course we had to try the fried chicken! This was easily in the top 5 best fried chicken we've ever had. The owner was working her butt off the whole time we were there. She was running everything -- the register, cooking, clean up, etc. She had to be stressed to the max, but she was extremely sweet & worked without complaining about handling every single thing. Food for the soul! It was beyond our expectations. I got fried shrimp, pan seared salmon with collard greens and mac and cheese. My husband got fried chicken and fries which I forgot to include in my video. The spot is in the cut but not hard to find! If I am ever passing through Savannah again, this will be my first stop! 1st time leaving a review and I had to come to Savannah, GA. From Stuart Florida to be inspired enough to do it. Soul Food done right / cooked to order Which takes a little time to - Do Right - Served hot and flavorful from the perfectly seasoned greens to the Crispiest finger lickin' Fried Chicken I've had in years ( sorry momma ) yellow rice with gravy and Mac & cheese were great as well. We left smiling and fully satisfied Wishing we were staying longer to try more dishes - we took a slice of carrot cake with us for later and yummmm! Thanks Yelp for the suggestion and Thanks to Rachel ( for sharing her story ) and her crew - very welcoming and friendly- they embody their "Simple Soul" slogan - Patience is a virtue and a Vibe! This is post delivery, food coma setting in, but felt compelled to get the word out. I've dabbled in soul food on a number of occasions, have tried all the new restaurants in Sav underground and on the tourist tract. The deal is that this is quite literally the best soul food I have ever had. And it may actually be one of the best places to eat in Savannah. Food snobs to southern pallet aficionados, this place will not disappoint. Highly recommended, The food is very good. We spent way more at other restaurants during our visit to Savannah, but this food was the best. We had the pot roast and rice. There is on street parking and the neighborhood is less desirable than the Historic District. We were comfortable walking the area during the day. read more

This is how food is supposed to be and the best meal in my 67 years. A small family owned restaurant that offers healthy meals with amazing flavor. This place is great! The only drawback is that it takes a long while to get food, but that is because it is made to order. The ambiance is simple, yet very inviting with all the plants around. My group ordered chicken and waffles, shrimp and fries, and fried chicken/white rice/green beans/corn bread. All receive top marks. Everyone could not stop gushing about how tasty everything is. Established in 2023.

Simple Soul is a small family owned home cooking kitchen. It is truly a passion project and labor of love for Rachel Silvers and her two daughters Destiny and Joy. Rachel is a native daughter of Savannah who decided to return home during the pandemic to help with her aging grandmother. Our mission was to create a warm community oriented space to enjoy the familiar comfort foods of the south in a simple healthy and wholesome way.

The family kitchen and dining room tables are where some of our best memories are born. These are the dishes and flavors that commemorate and honor the hands that prepared the food that graced those tables. The cinnamon toast banane was not so much toast as cinnamon rolls with bananas foster; the cinnamon rolls were really tasty and the bananas foster was good, though the bourbon flavor was strong. For my entree, I ordered one of the lighter vegetarian dishes - the mushroom tartine with tomato soup. I think it is one of the lighter dishes - certainly lighter than what my dining companions ordered - but it was still quite rich with a fair amount of gouda fondue in the tomato bisque soup. We ordered the oxtail combo and fried chicken combo, and every single bite was absolute perfection. The oxtail? Out of this world. Tender, flavorful, and clearly stewed with so much care and love. The rich, savory gravy soaked into the yellow rice, creating the ultimate comfort meal. Paired with sweet potato fries that were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender inside, and mac and cheese that stole my soul. That mac? A revelation. Smoky, cheesy, with a perfectly crispy top--honestly, I need the recipe ASAP. The fried chicken combo was just as impressive. The chicken was juicy, perfectly cooked, and seasoned with just the right amount of spice. The crunchy, golden skin was so addictive it could've stolen the entire show. The sides of fried okra and collard greens were soul food at its finest. The okra was crisp and golden, without a hint of grease, and the collard greens were tender, savory, and seasoned to perfection--a balance of tangy and smoky that made them unforgettable. The portions are generous, and somehow we managed to finish everything in one sitting because it was just that good. The atmosphere is warm and homey, like you've stepped into a loved one's kitchen. The sweet mama at the front, who seems to do it all from taking orders to cooking, is the heart of this place. Her smile and warmth made the experience even more special.
