First time at Hugo's tonight for a birthday celebration. Two of our group have gluten allergies, so it was very nice that they had so many choices to choose from. All the meals looked great, portions are large. I ordered the Chicken Carciofi. I enjoyed the combination of flavors of artichoke hearts, spinach, grape tomatoes, Kalamata olives, garlic and white wine in the sauce. The two thin fillets of chicken however were very over cooked and tough, to the point it was difficult to cut them with fork and knife. The organic brown rice was a nice accompaniment and soaked up the flavorful sauce. I don't like to send food back and I didn't, but in hind site I probably should have. Hugo's restaurant is a wonderful spot, it is very mellow, a great place for meeting up with a friend or date if you plan on having some lighthearted conversations. The waiters and waitresses could not have been kinder, they attended to me and my friend when needed and brought water right over to the table without asking (personally I'm a big water drinker so this was a big plus for me). They refilled our waters often but did not intrude in our conversation at all which I felt was very respectful. I ordered the Almond Energy Pancakes, and I enjoyed them. The pancakes were not spectacular but they were good. I also ordered some scrambled eggs and you can't really go wrong there! I used to LOVE Hugo's when I first became vegan. It's been two times in a row that my food was less than expected, kind of disappointing. However, other people's food was great! Just to name some for your reference. Good food: Build your own spaghetti: Their marinara was really good. They make their own spaghetti. It's chewy and sauce well-absorbed. Tofu burger: this is based on my nephew's comments. It tasted really well, especially the tofu was marinated so thoroughly. Vegan turkey meatloaf with gravy: it's really delicious. I remember I have ordered this at least twice, and it never disappoints me! Cinnamon buns: super sweet. It's like churros roll up into a cinnamon bun. I love it! Bad: Tofu scramble: it was tasteless. Do NOT go here if you have any allergies whatsoever. I've had the worst experience with this location over the past several months. Their own staff isn't clear on their ingredients. I've been given several variations of stories of what ingredients are used. I've told them several times I have Lyme disease and can't risk consuming specific allergens. After one incident when it became apparent that I consumed foods with allergens several times and spent a lot of money, despite the fact that I communicated my allergens to the restaurant every single time, a manager told me she'd "look into it". No word back after months. I started ordering different items off the menu that I was assured were "safe". I got a different story tonight when ordering the same items. They were not proactive with helping me choose a substitution. They were not proactive in canceling my order. Said they didn't know how to cancel it on Postmates and only called Postmates for help after I instructed them to. I finally got transferred to the owner to handle the old incident (when I had spent money on items several times that contained allergens). I was told I was just being placed on hold while they were canceling the order when in fact a manager picked up. He looked into the older incident of the allergens. It's now hours later and I realized I've been manipulated because the item only contains the allergen after it's deep fried. I asked the owner can they cook it on a skillet instead and he didn't sound positive (which he didn't sound sure on several extremely important details regarding their cooking process). He offered me a gift card but I'm realizing he never resolved the fact that I was consuming allergens for months because it has to be deep fried. I don't want a gift card. I want the $100's of dollars back I spent that went towards sabotaging my healing! I feel like I've been dealing with a used cars salesman. There was such a severe lack of direct answers to my simple questions, lack of clarity, and dishonesty! I'll have to follow up with an attorney or BBB (if aplicable). I've been a loyal customer since 2013. As a business owner, the people skills are lacking. He was nice but he constantly interrupted me and didn't stay on topic. It was all a maneuver to manipulate. I'm disgusted and frankly hurt, realizing I've been disregarded a third time over a serious manner. A manager hung up on me when I asked him to cancel the Postmates order earlier. I trusted this restaurant for years and dragged my friends here as it pretends to accommodate to allergies. I commend the fact that restaurants are adding vegan or vegetarian meals to their menus; however, if you are attempting to cater to a certain demographic, you should at least put some effort into the menu you are offering. My partner and I started with the vegan Mac and cheese with a side of fries. Fries tasted chewy as if they had been prepared the day before and reheated. The "Mac and cheese" was nothing but noodles in a soupy sauce with soggy onion "rings" on top of it. Our entrees were the vegan pot pie and tikka masala with tofu. The meal didn't get better. We ordered the beef burgers and they all came with onions picked tomatoes and Santa Fe Mayo, and then we had a choice of 3 additional toppings including different types of cheeses, different kinds of bacon, your choice of bun, mushrooms, grilled onions, jalapeños, guacamole, avocado and whatever else they list on the toppings option. And then you get a choice of a list of sides as well. The burger patty was pretty juicy and the toppings were fresh. Gluten free HEAVEN. There are so many options that are available at Hugo's (& Hugo's tacos) that are gluten free and I couldn't be a happier girl. I got the breakfast burrito on a gluten free tortilla which is super tasty to the point you have to ask, "is this tortilla for sure gluten free?". You can definitely tell it is by the looks, but the taste is it! The fried pickles are amazing and the ranch is the type you can drink. I got some chicken tenders and fries as well and the fries are pretty good but the chicken was awesome.
