If I could give zero stars, I would. This was easily the worst dining experience I've ever had, from the food quality to the customer service. We visited Hugo's after hearing positive things about several of their dishes, but our experience fell far short of expectations. We were seated promptly and placed our order, but service quickly became an issue. It took 15 minutes for me to receive a canned beer, and another 10 minutes before our appetizers arrived. We started with the Cauliflower Pakora and the 4 Cheese Mac & Cheese. The pakora was only lukewarm, while the mac and cheese was one of the worst I've ever had. It was watery, bland, and featured a large clump of melted cheese sitting in the middle of the dish. Less than a minute later, our entrées arrived before we had even begun eating the appetizers. Since we were seated at a small two-top table, there wasn't enough room for all the plates and drinks. The server moved us to a nearby four-top table to accommodate everything. Unfortunately, that led to another unpleasant interaction. The host approached us and angrily scolded us for moving to what he claimed was a reserved table. Even after we explained that the server had relocated us, he simply huffed and walked away. The food continued to disappoint. The Organic Fried Chicken Plate was described as a fried chicken breast, but what arrived was a thin, dry, over-pounded piece of meat that was difficult to cut and lacked flavor. The black bean cake side was equally bland. The honey mustard and BBQ sauces tasted like standard bottled condiments. We also ordered the Pasta Mama, a dish that many people seem to rave about. Unfortunately, ours tasted like plain noodles mixed with scrambled eggs. If there was supposed to be a special seasoning, it was completely absent. Both entrées were served cold. To top things off, the Strawberry Peach Crumble was overcooked, partially burnt, and contained very little fruit. We could barely find any strawberries at all. When we asked to speak with a manager, our concerns about the food were largely ignored. Instead, she defended the host's behavior by explaining that "he takes his job very seriously." Her solution was to offer just a 10% discount on the meal. After receiving the bill, we waited another 10 minutes before having to track down the manager ourselves in order to pay. We were then told they were busy and didn't have enough POS devices available. Between the poor food, disorganized service, unprofessional behavior, and surprisingly high prices, this was an unforgettable experience for all the wrong reasons. We recently discovered a new spot and had breakfast at Hugo's Studio City, and it was such a pleasant experience. We found this place through a Google search while specifically looking for a restaurant with a large gluten-free menu -- and Hugo's truly delivered. Almost everything on the menu is gluten-free, from classic French toast to hearty burritos, which is incredibly rare and impressive. There's a great balance between healthy options and more indulgent, gourmet-style dishes. Even the desserts are gluten-free, which was a big plus. The service was excellent from start to finish. From the hostess to our server, everyone was friendly, warm, and welcoming from the moment we walked in. We chose to sit on the patio since the weather was sunny, and it was the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the moment. Inside, there's plenty of seating, though the interior feels a bit dark for my taste. The old-fashioned décor gives the place a nostalgic, almost time-travel feel. I came to Hugo's Restaurant with my vegan parents and kids. I had the Cali Benedict with potatoes and really enjoyed it. My parents ordered the vegan chipotle scramble and vegan French toast and loved both. The kids had chicken strips with fries and butter pasta. Both were kid-approved. Jake was our server and he was great. We liked that he was attentive and gave helpful suggestions. The space is warm and cozy with a relaxed vibe, and parking was easy since they have their own lot (huge plus). The only miss for us was the vegan bacon... quinoa bacon is a big commitment . I just can't see why this place is as popular as it is or even why it has multiple locations. This is my second time coming here and my visits were over a decade apart if that says anything about the first visit. I decided to give it a try again yesterday just to see if things had improved and I can now report that the experience was just as bad. Let's start with the service. There were five of us and we made a reservation, although that really wasn't necessary as there weren't a lot of people there to begin with. The waiter took our drink order and came back with 4 of the 5 drinks right. Mine was wrong but that's not a big deal. The big deal happened when I reminded the server and still didn't get that drink for another 10 mins. If I had forgotten a customers drink I wouldn't have waited 10 mins to correct it after they brought it to my attention. Once we got our food the server never came back over to check on us.... Not once! Which also meant no refill for drinks. Just overall, the service was not on point. Second, let's talk about the food, I mean how do you screw up a breakfast burrito? It was bland and even the salsa that came with it couldn't save it. The potatoes that came as the side tasted like they had been sitting in the pan since the restaurant opened that morning. And considering it was afternoon when we ate there, they were terrible. I'm not usually a person to leave any food on my plate, because my mom taught me to clean my plate! So when I leave food that I paid my hard-earned money for, you know it isn't good. The location is good if y oh live in the valley and honestly this is the reason I went there yesterday. The fried pickles were interesting as they were new for me, but everyone else really enjoyed them. Another outstandingly good lunch at Hugo's. The parking lot is almost always full. They take OpenTable reservations. Everything is excellent on the menu with so many V/V+ options your head spins - because you can combine anything with anything here. Light and delicate dressings, over the top salads, my favorite green casserole with cheeze, the desserts are tasty and almost healthy. The various juices and smoothies are definitely healthy. Love their (not) pastrami on rye sandwich! Pasta Mamas are so comforting. Eat everything here and feel the positive energy just overwhelm you about how this place keeps going for decades with the healthiest sustainable food on the planet next to pure raw. It can get a bit noisy so I wouldn't call it intimate but the outer ring patio is a bit more peaceful than the jumping inside seating. We went there for lunch on Monday. I had the vegan Reuben, it was tasty yet felt rather greasy. And even asking for well done or crispy fries, this yet another non-successful moment. I could have asked to have it replaced, yet even getting the water refilled was an effort for the wait person, I chose to just eat. I placed a to-go order, with specific instructions. Well, they were not met and even when the order came to the table, it was incomplete, and bad on me for not checking if all instructions were met. Receiving chicken instead of mushrooms, huge error as the person I was bringing it to cannot eat chicken. Extremely disappointed, and I sent a note to the contact us, on the website, no response. Sent a note directly to email, again no response. The best part of the experience was walking in and walking out. Located on the cusp of Sherman Oaks, bordering Valley Village and outer Studio City, this Coldwater Canyon adjacent (one of two locations) restaurant resides on Riverside Drive across from the Mariposa Hotel and neighbors Whole Foods, Hugo's Tacos and several local businesses and residences, making it feel like a slice of home. I've been coming to Hugo's - Studio Oaks (Studio City + Sherman Oaks) or rather Sherman Village (Sherman Oaks + Valley Village) on and off for the last ten plus years or so. It's cozy inside charm and outdoor patio (added on during the last five years) have set the mood for some great experiences and meals with many for me including a pretty cool birthday brunch with some choice friends/chosen family. I knew we'd be a group of at least ten or more so I wanted to make a reservation online (they use OpenTable), but for parties larger than four it's best to call in and with some notice (I gave a little over a week). One of my favorite things about Hugo's is how they accommodate a variety of foodie preferences, restrictions and/or allergens. From vegetarian to vegan to gluten free and more, Hugo's is here to serve #ConsciouslyDelicious I recommended the Cinnamon Swirl French Toast to my friend Fabrice, the only other vegan in my party and he loved them! I went with the vegan version of the Chilaquiles (the best I've had at Hugo's to date) and my friend Barrak had the classic version. Among our group it was a brunch smorgasburg of so many things from pancakes to eggy dishes like the Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast scramble and so forth. Beverages followed the same suite with fresh hot coffee, juice, soft drinks, teas, waters and adult beverages.... Mimosas, including bottomless mimosas were had! Having enjoy meals and beverages at all times of day here, for so long - I have to say I'm proud of how they've continued to grow, thrive and improve. Happy Hour specials as well as monthly menu item specials like their breakfast salad, shepherd's pie (can be made vegan and/or gluten free) and baked apple crumble are so many choice things to check out and enjoy. They have private parking in their lot, but it does fill up quite fast for breakfast and brunch on weekends. Street parking is ample, though may be a journey. Well worth it! Huge shout-out to Eric -- he wasn't even our server, yet my Coke Zero never hit empty once. He kept it full the entire time, lemon perfectly placed, like he had a sixth sense for when I needed a refill. That kind of attention is rare, and honestly, it made my whole meal. Sorry I wanted to like this more. I had a good experience a few months ago for dinner. My sister and I came for lunch. We were seated in the corner where yes it was busy, but the server took forever and was not as attentive as he could've been. I had the blackened chicken tacos, which were mediocre that came with potato chips, which were stale. The chicken in the tacos was so dry and tasteless and the little tacos were basically just chicken with cabbage sprinkled on it with red onions. The only thing really good about them was the dressing that I was given to cover it with. the corn tortillas were soggy. The place itself is nice. I like the see and set up. I like the openness and it's easy to get to there is a parking lot. I went ahead and ordered the create your own veggie burger, and it was not one of those high processed burgers, it was made from all natural ingredients like sprouted, mung beans, organic brown rice, fresh vegetables, etc. They also had vegan mayo and the coolest thing is you get to choose three fancy toppings (included) to put on your burger! I chose vegan cheese, guacamole, and green chili. as the side, I chose butternut squash soup because it came highly recommended from my friend. It was so delicious! Well, I sat at the soup. I was staring at my burger, getting anxious about how am I gonna flip the 2/2 of this burger together because they are both piled so high in addition to the three things I chose as toppings, I also ordered the standard veggies. In any case, I was able to put it together and hold onto it with two hands and eat it and it was amazing! I just wanted to give a shout out to the team presentation! I believe I got the Jasmine tea and I love how it was brought to the table in a French press and then I ordered mine over ice. I chose this restaurant because I found their menu online and saw that they had a really good amount of gluten free options. I was not emotionally prepared to get there and find that almost the entire menu was gluten free. I had to try not to cry. It's really hard for me to eat out. When we do I usually default to Red Robin, even though I really don't care for it, because it's somewhere I feel safe. I felt safe here. I left full despite only being able to eat 1/4 of the food on my plate (thats a me thing, though I don't think anyone else is leaving hungry either!). I can't wait to bring my kids to eat here. My husband had the orange chicken and I had the pot roast. I'm allergic to chicken, but he tells me it was great. He said the rice was a little dry but the chicken was juicy. I liiiive for tomatoes so I loved that the pot roast had a rich tomato base. You don't see that very often. Hugo's, for the most part has been pretty consistent in the execution of their menu, but I feel compelled to come on and update my review based on my past few visits both daytime and nighttime where the service has been below par. I'm not sure if it's the extended outdoor patio space that's been straining the service or what, but the past three times we've been there we've had the same person and they for lack of a better term basically forgot about us. It's disturbing in many ways because twice the restaurant wasn't that busy, but the server just seemed to have been preoccupied with something else and our meal took longer than expected. One of my faves in L.A. / Sherman Oaks! - Ideal if you're a raw food or cooked-food vegan, or vegetarian (they can always substitute ingredients). You can also build your own plate! Great atmosphere, ambiance (whether sitting outside or inside) - especially if you can avoid the lunch crowd, fabulous service, quality, first class food (a lot of it Farmer's Market organic) and fresh!! The cook(s) here really know what they're doing. I haven't once had anything that's just "meh"! Favorite new dishes (on the temp specials menu...& hoping they'll add to regular menu) is the Mint Asparagus Spears appetizer, & the Baked Apple Crumble - both DELISH!!! The latter doesn't look like much and they skimp a bit on the crumble part but after you try it, you won't complain! Perfection! One that's no longer on the menu I loved is the mung bean quesadillas. (They sound so-so, but used to be one of my favorite things on the menu). Other all-time faves that still exist: The 4-Cheese Mac & Cheese - both the vegan & the vegetarian are amazing!! (If you're a Mac&Cheese connoisseur, this is a must try! I don't even like Gorgonzola cheese & still loved this!) The Very Green (& healthy) Casserole - stupendous! Also, the Asian Stir Fry, & the Asian Chopped salad; both grrreat!! The Mexican Salad is wonderful! & The Cesar Salad is also delish. The Vedic Latte is fantastic as is the Yogi Smoothie! If you eat meat (fowl, red, or white) I'm told Hugo's also wont disappoint. They also have a Taco Fast Food bar across the street from Whole Foods - a rock throw away from the restaurant shd there's free parking; both neighborhood and a decent size parking lot - which always has parking, if you're not there during the lunch or dinner crowds. Two of my favorite waiters are Charlie, & Claudia! Say hi for me if you see them / they wait on you. (Optional of course.) They're boyh patient, listen, are super attentive, friendly, and just a great people, and part of what makes this privately owned and operated restaurant a joy to patron and make it feel cozy and warm.
