Last night I went to Hugo's tacos in Atwater village, my daughter and her friends ate al pastor tortas and I had a really good soft tofu taco, Ensenada style (not sure) it hit the spot in freshness and flavor, I also had a mushroom torta, the flavor was delicious and it came loaded with guac and pickled onions, very juicy, reminded me of osso bucco. The bread is not tradicional bolillo but It's good. not gonna complain about such things anymore. Today we got crispy tofu tacos and a tofu bowl from Hugo's studio City and it was really good again. Loaded. The salsas are perfectly spicy. My daughter had al pastor (again) and she insisted I took a bite. The customer service here is some of the best... the food is just okay... mainly in terms of flavor... but the serving sizes/portions are great and the options are abundant. Hugo's is worth trying for sure... the salsa(s) really save as well as embellish the meals. I recommend the tacos (crispy), churros and quesadillas over the burritos and some other options just because they're richer in quality (taste, filling, etc.) Definitely will be back or order via Postmates from again since this is one of the few places with vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and a variety of options for dietary needs... If you're in a group or with a friend or in my case on a date it's kind of an ideal chill spot (not underwhelming, but also not super impressive). Decor is sort of fun, yet bland.... menus are colorful and inviting... tons of utensils, napkins and condiments between order window and pick up. This location is right by the on ramp for 101 fwy - Coldwater Canyon entrance... they share parking with other businesses with only a handful of spots so if you live local... walk. Parking in general here even on the street is awkward and depending on the time of day you might have to park a block or more away and journey upward to this walk up style stand with limited outdoor seating. read more

I stopped at this restaurant for my lunch break because it has a sign stating that they were rated the best tacos in 2022. On the outside it looks clean. But there was no parking. The service was fast. I ended up getting carne asada tacos. The beef was dry, The tortillas were cold. The only thing that was good was the green sauce. Not to mention the prices are way too high. I'd say I was jealous of the grubhub orders that Clearly get priority to in-person but I doubt their orders coulda been much better. Spent 45 dollars for 2 people and feel extremely underwhelmed. A review for this place is a long time coming, but to be transparent my most recent experience compelled me to actually post. We come here from time to time as it is on the was home right by the freeway onramp and usually pretty quick to grab some food to take home (and vegan options). We recently stopped by and got a similar order to what we normally eat, vegan taquitos, a couple of tofu tacos, side of chips and salsa, etc. Unfortunately when we got home and began eating my wife noticed that 3/4 taquitos were actually chicken. We have 2 children and mealtimes are always a bit of a shitshow - so I prepared something else for my wife and kids to eat ASAP. I felt pretty disappointed in this and before bed that evening I sent a contact inquiry on the website requesting a manager contact me - providing the order details. A few days pass and I hear nothing, so I call the store to follow up. I get someone on the phone who says that they are the manager. I explain the circumstances to them of our order and give feedback about our experience. At the very least the order of taquitos need to be refunded. The first response from the manager is, "well did you call the store that night?" I was somewhat stunned by this. Between rushing to cook a full meal for my family, dealing with kids and bedtime, no I did not immediately call the store. I mentioned I did however submit a request to be contacted online. The next response, "well normally you have to call use to get a refund." Ok, I say. She says, but I will pass your information to to store manager (maybe this was not a manager after all?) and they will follow up with you regardless. I leave my phone number expecting a call back. Nearly two weeks later and no response. Nothing from the website, nothing from my follow up call. Nothing. Customer service is not that hard to get right. A quick call acknowledging what happened would have gone a long way. Apparently this reflects the total apathy of the management of Hugos. Now onto the food! SUPER inconsistent food. - sometimes good sometimes meh. The food itself is ok, nothing special. It is a type of Mexican food that caters to a certain demographic. There are literally hundreds of Mexican restaurants in the valley that are way better (and don't charge $4 for a single taco). The food is also prepared without thought. For instance, every time I have gotten an item with salsa and beans on the side it is put in a separate dish. This would be a great idea except neither the beans of salsa are drained of their fluids and so the order is a sloppy mess of super liquidy bean salsa juice. Between the food and shit service I would avoid Hugo's at all costs or try it with a measured dose of preparedness to be disappointed. read more

I give them a 3.5. I came to Hugo's years ago, and thought the tacos were tasty and unique. There was one that tasted like it had mole sauce. I didn't see that today. I got a chicken taco with honey glaze sauce. The sauce was tasty, but a little too hot (spicy) for me. I'm a light weight when it comes to salsa. I also ordered a potato taco. It was fresh and tasty, except I got more honey glaze sauce on it instead of the tomatillo sauce I ordered. I recommend getting the hot sauce on the side. The pinto beans were fresh. However, I didn't care for the rice. The rice tasted spicy to me, and I didn't like the flavor overall. Next time, I'll try the fish torta. The bread looks good, and not too thick, on the torta, and I haven't found a torta I like in my immediate neighborhood. read more

I ordered the soy Chorizo breakfast burrito and a side of chips and Pico. I give them a 10 Good size burrito full of flavor and very delicious, chips good amount of chips or wish they could of gave 2 things of Pico. It was a small amount vs the chips they gave you. They are open as early as 11:00am and close at 7. They also have specials n Tuesday and Wednesday's. Over all I could of used some spicy salsa to make it taste better. I will I return yes but see if they will give me the extra salsa. read more

I live right by this place and have seen a line every time I've driven by. My boyfriend and I wanted to take advantage of their Taco Tuesday special (which now in retrospect is hardly a special) so we dropped on by. $3 for a mediocre, bland taco??? Nope, not happening again. I think the thing that bugged me the most was the fact that they just put whatever salsa you order right on the taco, not on the side. Now maybe I'm a snob, but this just seems wrong. I think it's just a way for them to cut corners instead of giving you a whole side of salsa. I would just note that if anyone else doesn't want this to happen to them, ask for the salsa on the side. The soy chorizo was gross, you can definitely buy way better at Ralph's. The shrimp was decent and the carnitas were dry. Customer service was good though! Sad times for me because it would've been so clutch to have a great taco spot within walking distance. Poor experience and first impression from start to finish.... Ordered 3 "tacos" at $3.69 ea. Expected $3.69 worth of food, received far less. The tacos were tiny. I feel price gauged and ripped off. One of the tacos was white fish. Completely flavorless. Like they'd boiled a quarter cup of fish and put it on a corn tortilla without any other ingredients. Completely flavorless and dry. Ordered a water cup and tomatillo + jalapeño salsa on the side. Received neither. Was forced to wait at the pickup window - longer than I did to order - to ask for both items again. Asked the gentleman at the pickup window for both. He acknowledged my request and immediately forgot it. Simply moved on to other (seemingly more important activities) leaving me standing at the pickup window with 3 other obviously frustrated patrons for another 5 minutes. All the while, my already underwhelming tacos were getting colder and colder. When I finally got his attention again I had to ask for the items a 3rd time..... This experience has literally and figuratively left a bad taste in my mouth. I actually left Hugo's angry. Like my time and money had been wasted. They can be sure I'll never return and that I'll tell everyone who will listen not to visit their "restaurant". It's clear that after so many years in business they take very little pride in what they do. Very sad. I had my eye on this place for a long time. Driving past it over and over for years. I should've let the expectation as a mystery and not stop by. This place was a fail in my books. My boss chose this place out since she is vegan and they had some vegan options. I ordered the chicken bowl and she ordered some crunchy tacos. The chicken was very weird not like I'm used to. It was chopped into little pieces and tasted like chorizo. I had to take to cook and double check it was chicken. He said they cook it in some type of sauce blah blah but it was even lacking flavor. The beans and the rice were even worse. To sum up the bowl in its entirety the whole thing was BLAND. They add about two spoons of your choice of salsa but literally only added color. Also, the portion is very small and is served in some cheap cardboard bowl. I know we're trying to be environment safe but damn it don't gotta be ugly. Enough of the bowl, the tacos looked weak. Didn't try them but the jefe was not too impressed. Customer service? What customer service. They take your order and NEXT! Yelp Challenge 2016: 100/116. I am a native Angeleno, so you know that ease of parking is a big deal for me. And at Hugo's Tacos, parking can be challenging if you want to make a left into the lot when you exit the freeway coming from the south. You have to cross a double yellow and hope there isn't someone exiting the lot at the same time. It's only a single car entry / exit off Coldwater Canyon. I love tacos! So once my car was safely in the lot, I ordered three: the soy chorizo, the al pastor and the carne asada. First impression...the medium spicy taco sauce is kind of unexpectedly sweet with a slight yet pleasant after burn. I don't think the sweetness will be to everyone's liking. I'm still, as I write this, up in the air about it. The soy chorizo was fine but I prefer real chorizo. The al pastor is the Mexican shawarma- spit roasted pork. This was also sweet and spicy, but with a pronounced charred molé-like flavor and some tangy citrus too. Complex. I would have it again. The asada steak taco was much more straightforward and traditional tasting. Thank goodness it didn't have the sweetness of the other two but it did have enough burn to make it interesting. I liked that the mango iced tea was already cold so no gratuitous amount of ice was needed. It's just a stand so maybe two or three tables outside and that's it. The large majority of their business seems to be to-go. I would return to try some of their other menu items but I will have to see if there's a back alley entrance for easier parking access. read more

I'd heard about Hugo's tacos through friends that are vegetarian. I decided to try it I'm glad I did. They have several vegetarian and vegan options. I had the tofu taco and the mushroom one. Both were really good. My boyfriend had a meat taco and he enjoyed his too. So happy to find a place that has food for both of us. read more

I've been waiting to try this place for years. I like Hugos restaurant quasi across the street, but it's totally different and I'd say the food quality is good but flavors are just ok. I tried 3 tacos, 2 hard shell beef /chorizo and soft with shrimp. Very little flavor and a little burnt, even the pico de gallo was mediocre. I Feel similar to what others said in their reviews, it's a busy place, lots of variety to accommodate everyone, but seasoning is not a highlight. The service is slow but very friendly, I assume to go pick up orders take priority to walk up orders. Hugo's and Cactus are similar. For basic no thrills tacos go to Henry's on Tajunga. read more

Every other place is between $1 to $2 . Flavorless carne asada tacos and burrito. I spend $38 for 6 tacos 1 burrito and chips and guacamole. Overpriced boring food. I should have read the recent reviews before wasting my money here. The only reason for 2 stars is for the good customer service I received. That's about it. read more

We came here strictly for dessert after eating lunch elsewhere. Their Frozato, which is a vegan soft serve (ice cream), comes in vanilla, chocolate, or swirl, in a cup or cone. I got a swirl cone. #teamswirl! It was cold and creamy; perfect for a hot summer day. (Beware that the Frozato contains soy and cashew nut allergens.) This is my first time at this Hugo's location. They have lots of vegan food options. Their menu displays via designated symbols which items are naturally vegan and which have a vegan option available. I do want to go back and try their tortas next time. The parking lot at this location is really small, with only a handful of spaces. There are a couple of outside tables if you want to eat there, but it's basically a carry-out only establishment. The full-service Hugo's Restaurant is literally across the street if you're looking for a dine-in experience. read more

I love love love Hugo's Tacos. Ample options for vegetarians, delicious menu items (mushroom menudo? dank breakfast tacos? all the different salsas you could even dream of?). They even have curbside pickup, you can easily order in advance from their website, and they've taken the time to put socially distanced markers on the floor as well as display mask signs. Maybe I'm just a bit overwhelmed in my day to day life but at the pickup window, the man behind it asked if I wanted to try any new salsas today. It was so sweet and kind and the fact that everything tastes excellent and still delivers optimal customer service while on the frontlines of food just warms my heart beyond belief. read more

Haven't been here for a while( since Covid days),and came today to get the same exact breakfast I've been getting for the past 14 years and it was full of big chunks of raw white onions, no seasoning what so ever. So disappointing you can get a breakfast bowl right. Lastly I got it to go and asked for two chipotle salsa's and got only one which normally wouldn't be a big deal cuz the bowl has good flavor to it, however this time Gurl needed it to wash down the absolute disappointment and absolute no taste at all! read more

For me, I'm a fan of the tiny triangles letting me know what items are vegan. If you order a Grilled Veggie Taco or a Soy Chorizo Taco, it is $2.59 each or three for $6.78. So I ordered one Grilled Veggie and two Soy Chorizo. I added Vegan Cheese, which tasted like Daiya, to one of the Soy Chorizo tacos for an extra $0.40. Ordered three tacos and chips and salsa One crunchy potato and two carnitas. My order took forever and I can see the customers behind were getting upset. That is all I ordered. Two girls were behind the glass and finally after waiting for who knows what, my order was taken and when I asked for a receipt. CRICKETS! LIke I don't care for a receipt but how would I know what number, afterwards a girl appeared and told me they would just call me at the pick up window? 12:18PM I got my order and what was strange was the fact that I got my order first as the guy in front of me placed his? This was my first time here and believe me it will be my last. First of all this place has no restroom for customers to wash their hands. Second they over charge for the quality of the food. Hugo's wins hands down the the most flavorless mexican food I have ever had. We ordered several types of tacos, a quesadilla, guacamole and other sides it was all so bland. Nothing stood out between the carne aside and carnitas tacos so much that I had to question which meat was which. We ate it because we were really hungry, but even half way through I had regrets. I would never order from them again. I truly dislike writing bad reviews and it's a disappointment because we love Hugo's restaurants and have visited both locations and always been happy.
