Great food, great service and great ambiance. We ordered kung pao Shrimp, orange chicken, egg drop soup and sweet & sour soup with egg rolls. The sweet & sour soup was delicious! The king pao sauce was on point! The egg rolls were perfectly crunchy on the outside and the veggie filling fresh. We are originally from southern Cali and are use to mandarin cuisine, now new to Texas; and are happy to have found a new spot. Definitely not a chain restaurant experience or over priced bougie place. Hunan Lion is the real deal! read more

There's a reason Hunan Lion has been in business for so long: they serve up good Chinese food at a decent price. Nothing really new or innovative here, and that's okay. If you want tried and true dishes, you've come to the right place. We ordered two appetizers--Salt & Pepper Calamari and Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. The calamari was delicious, but the steamed dumplings were pretty bland (I would skip next time). My main dish of Kung Pao Shrimp was tasty and satisfied my craving for Chinese food. While there's only a small vegetable section and no Buddhist mock meats, the handful of vegan options are strong enough to stand alone. Take for example, the garlic eggplant. Cooked to soft, silky perfection, lacquered with your standard savory brown sauce, it's the kind of comfort food I grew up on. So far, this is the closest I've come to east coast-style Chinese takeout; inauthentic and proud of it.⁣ ⁣ Note: the spicy cucumbers at the top are a HUGE miss. What a pleasant surprise this restaurant was. We walked in and it felt like we were time traveling back into the 70s. It's very old fashion Chinese like restaurant. We sat down and we were instantly served. We tried the egg drop and the hot and sour soup, both of which were very good. We followed that up with honey crispy chicken and Sizzling shrimp. Both were very tasty as well and the portions are very generous, And the prices are very reasonable. I was a little bit hesitant because of the 3 1/2 star reviews but I ordered the Mongolian beef and if you've ever been to P.F. Chang's lately MB -it is just so gross but at this restaurant the Mongolian beef was absolutely delicious and looks like real food versus that commercial plasticky sweet over-the-top disgusting Mongolian beef and P.F. I've been patronizing this establishment since it opened back in the 80s. The food has always been great and the staff has always been very friendly and attentive. When we had the power go out on February 1st due to the severe weather, I needed to find somewhere to get dinner, and very few places were open. Not only was Hunan Lion open, but they were slammed with business and had set up tables in the middle of the dining room for take out orders in order to get everyone in and out efficiently. I was able to place an order as soon as I arrived, and the my had it out to me in less than 10 minutes! There's a reason this place is still going strong after all these years! read more

DoorDash dinner from the trusty Hunan Lion. Tried to hit a couple of new things but tonight was a mixed bag. Pupu platter - pork rib, beef satay, egg roll, crab rangoon, fried chicken wing and shrimp. A little heavy on the batter for the chicken and shrimp but overall the platter was good. Note only one of each item as a sampling. Hot and Soup. Always good and a crowd pleaser. Sautéed 3 Seas. Garlic sauce with a medley of veggies, shrimp, scallops and fish. Thumbs up for this classic. Triple Crown Pan Fried Noodles. This one did not win the triple crown for us. Noodles are fried which didn't travel well. They ended up a little greasy and chewy. However the medley of chicken, beef and shrimp with veggies were good. We tossed this on rice instead. Problem fixed. Crispy Tea Smoke Duck. This one was a miss for us. The duck was briny and rather chewy and jerky like. It wasn't terribly crisp and had a rather unappetizingly dark brown coloring. Toss in the even darker sauce and it was a monchromatic salt bomb. I was very disappointed. The decor of the restaurant is very charming but the food is terrible. The wonton soup was mostly salt and wilted wonton, squishy and tasteless wontons. The egg roll that came with the dinner was the worst I every had; tasted stale and chewy like it was 3 days old. The strips of breaded chicken tasted like they were from the frozen food section in a grocery store, devoid of flavor and hardened as if they had been re-heated multiple times. The rice was done well enough but let's face it, rice is not why I go to a restaurant. I have eaten at a lot of Asian restaurants in Austin and most are pretty good but this was the worst. Oh, and 3 tiny pieces of broccoli sprouts were included in the meal. I will not go back. read more

Ate here with a large group on Sunday for lunch. Great service and excellent value. Lunch special includes choice of soup with egg roll and wonton on the side. This review is based on a Door Dash order I got tonight from Hunan Lion and let me just say... YUMMM!! I got the General Tso's Chicken and it is absolutely phenomenal! I've lived in Austin for nearly 2 years and have never come across a better Chinese restaurant that can make this dish. You'd think that just about any Chinese restaurant would be able to successfully make this sweet and slightly spicy deep-fried chicken, but I haven't had this level of quality and flavor ever, until now. Hunan Lion came highly recommended from someone we were talking with recently. We are so happy to have another place to get Sesame Chicken (comes with broccoli) and Lomein. Both were delicious and flavor was perfect. They offer lunch specials which come with soup and egg roll. You do have the option of steamed rice or fried rice. They also offer black bean sauce with jalapeño and your choice of protein as well as chicken and walnuts (similar to shrimp and walnuts) both I have not seen on a menu in forever. We ordered takeout this time around and we were happily greeted by an enthusiastic hostess/waitress who took our order. We haven't had the chance to dine-in but there appears to be comfortable seating. read more

this is my go-to joint for Chinese-American food. Good crab rangoons, egg rolls, dumpings, spring rolls. Depending on my mood I get their general tso's, orange beef, mu shu chicken or pork, or beef in hunan sauce. All are good. Brocolli with oyster sauce is a simple classic and a great way to get your veg. You can also order steamed vegetables and ask for just brocolli. The Salt and pepper calamari is good, often with plenty of onions (white and green) along with jalepeno if you need some heat. Eggrolls and spring rolls are good, too. The duck dishes are pretty good too, although the smoked duck is a bit overpowering the one time I tried it. Sometimes they have off-days, but not too often. And not so bad I don't order again. Before the pandemic, I was a regular. And it was usually the same couple of guys delivering. When I moved four years ago, I kept ordering. Thankfully, they kept delivering. The usual order service I used for delivery stopped delivering to my location, but I found another that did, so when I'm hunkering for some spicy sweet Tso's or Orange Beef, I'm set. During the pandemic, I've ordered more than I might otherwise, just to make sure they get some business their way. I'd hate to lose a solid local restaurant. read more

We order weekly from Hunan Lion and we have noticed a steady DECLINE in the taste and quality of the food. Food that CONSISTENTLY arrived hot came cold and soggy. I ordered the shrimp with green beans and it was filled with stems from the green beans and posed a choking hazard. The fried rice was tasteless and sticky/ gummy in texture, inedible in our opinion. The egg rolls used to be very good and now they are different in the egg roll wrapper and came ice cold and soggy. We were incredibly disappointed that the food and delivery service has sadly and severely declined. read more

Friend ordered hot & sour but got egg drop. Said it was good and it looked perfect. Waitress Chris repaired by bringing hot & sour. I ordered MGGP and friend ordered pork with veggies. She got chicken with veggies. Not my friend or Chris' day! My dish was underseasoned but the chicken was perfectly done. Friend's pork (came later) was a bit chewy. Dined inside at Hunan Lion on a Saturday for lunch. Received really good service! A lot of vegetarian options and a good lunch special. The gentlemen who seated us and took our order was friendly and patient. He explained all of the vegetarian options and had no issues or attitude making substitutes. The hunan lion sauce was our favorite of the dishes we order. All of the plates ordered came out fast (within ten minutes), were correctly made, and tasted great.
