We took our kids to eat at Hunan Mifen tonight. The children shared a bowl of zha cai and shredded pork rice noodles (榨菜肉丝米粉). After we got home, both kids started experiencing severe stomach pain and diarrhea. One of them repeatedly woke up during the night feeling nauseous and needing to vomit. They did not eat anything spicy, so this was clearly not caused by chili or spice irritation. Based on the timing and symptoms, we are very concerned that the food may not have been clean or properly handled. To make matters worse, the restaurant also imposes a mandatory 15% tip, which felt especially unreasonable given our experience. Families with children should be especially cautious. We had a very upsetting experience and strongly recommend avoiding this place, particularly if you are bringing kids. read more

Here's what we got: Rice Noodles with Pickled Cabbage and Beef Brisket (5/5): the noodle texture was absolutely incredible-- so bouncy and slurp-able. The broth was so flavorful yet light, and while I'm not typically the biggest fan of pickled veggies, these pickled veggies complimented the noodle soup so well! Then to top it off, this was most tender beef briskets I've ever had! This dish has one chili sign and it's equivalent to a Hot Ones spice level 3, which is not bad at all. Rice Noodles Topped with Bu Beans and Minced Pork (4.5/5): the noodles were, again, phenomenal. When you mix all the toppings together with the dry noodle, the dish become so flavorful. A very casual, but unabashedly legitimate, Hunan-style rice noodle shop. While their noodles were on the softer side, it's generally a great bowl of mifen for the price. There is no quarter for the uninitiated, so while this stuff is absolutely delicious it's also legit spicy. Don't take their 3 pepper heat lightly! I had to really pace myself with it to not get absolutely scorched... Being situated right next to Lion supermarket makes parking a breeze. Spacious interior and pretty minimalist (yet clean) décor. Service was extremely fast and attentive; food got brought out within 10 minutes and our server was bringing out napkins and water refills really as we needed them (rather impressive attentiveness honestly). Expect a QR code ordering and payment system along with some hand sanitizer. We only got their mifen dishes, which should be understood like so. You cannot change the spiciness levels of their rice noodles. Each mifen comes with pickled veggie toppings in the bowl of broth and a cilantro/green onion mix on the side. For dine-in at least, the "meat" was also served on the side (which trust me, this is good for controlling the amount of heat you end up with). ==Beef bone== This stuff was absolutely gushing with flavor and the marrow was absolute deliciousness, but the oil it's in will melt your insides. Super spicy is SUPER SPICY. It photographed pretty mild in the photo, but in-person I swear the oil glowed menacingly. ==Shredded Chicken== Also great on flavor, though a bit saltier and much more sour profile than the beef bone dish. Both meats were really good and the noodles were tasty. Soup base had a lot of flavor. The spicy beef though is very spicy that it's mouth-numbing, so order it only if you can handle a lot of spice. The one at Kiely and Saratoga in West San Jose opened recently and my wife and her friend are both noodle heads, so we have come here a couple times for take-out noodles. The first thing to know: their Beef Bone Noodle is the house specialty. It is very tasty, but it is burn the house to the ground, rebuild it and burn it down again hot. You can't adjust the spice level. If you're not prepared for some pain, don't order them. If you're not afraid they are delicious. I have ordered them twice. The first time the waitress tried to talk me out of it. Do I look like I can't handle the heat? My wife explained in Chinese, "he's ok, don't worry." Next thing: the pictures you see of Beef Intestine Noodles, that's not my thing. The two girls shared this and said it was spicy but not as spicy as my Beef Bone Noodles (because they took some of mine of course). Four thumbs up on these. Last: if you see something on the English menu called something like, "Rice Noodle with Lard Oil, Vegetable and Pork Cracklins," fear not, it's your old favorite Dan Dan Rice Noodles. I don't know why they couldn't just call it that. I think most English literate folks in a joint like this have a better chance of understanding what that is than the name they tried to give it. A noodle by any name you care to call it, it's good. I tried it. I may get it myself some time if I'm not up for the spice assault which comes with my favorite item on the menu.
