We went here for my dad's birthday dinner since he was looking for authentic Chinese food in a low-noise restaurant. This place is nice and cozy and we got seated quickly and as expected, it is not as noisy and rowdy as other Chinese restaurants. We got Tea Smoked Duck (Half) which was a hugeee portion and was cooked perfectly, not too dry, not too gamey, and was nice and tender. I also loved their Salt & Pepper Fish, the breading was light and the fish was tender. The Chicken Wing in HotPot was ok, I would say they're just like your average chicken wings but with Chinese flavors. The veggies were also solid, just a nice veggie dish for balance. Crispy sole with sauce on the side but I can taste the baking soda on the batter or on the fish skin. Peking style spare ribs but what we got was pieces of pork chops in Peking style sauce. Chicken with assorted vegetables (or maybe it was chicken stir fried with broccoli and carrots) was just ok. Highly recommend the salted soybean milk here, a classic Taiwanese/Chinese breakfast dish that is hard to find anywhere that's authentic and tasty. It's kind of like a salty tofu soup with Chinese fried dough sticks called "you tiao." You can add spicy chili oil and soy sauce to enhance the flavors. Thin and fluffy. Excellent. Spicy beef noodle soup - the soup flavor is very good, spicy enough but what caught my attention is the texture of the noodle. It's very Al dente. Chicken fried rice - I say it's slightly above average. Not bad. Beijing meat pancake - the meat is firmer than I hoped for but the taste and the pancake crust was really good. Walnut chicken - That was the surprised. My son ordered it and I have lots of doubt about it. I've had Walnut prawns before but Walnut chicken... It turned out extraordinary. My family came here on CNY Eve, and it was really packed. We waited around 20 minutes before being able to get seated. After we put in our order, we waited another 20 minutes before receiving our first dish. The dishes came out sporadically every 15 minutes. Reasonably good at decent prices, so good spot for future takeout or casual meals when the craving for (mostly) authentic northern foods. Stuff from other regions can be a bit hit or miss though. Quality isn't through the roof, but neither are the prices, so fair is fair. Cash discount available. Parking lot is pretty sizable for the strip mall area they're located in, though the sign to turn into is not too noticeable. We had no difficulty finding a spot for Sunday brunch. Soong Soong's sign is pretty large though so it's pretty hard to miss. Service is indeed a bit hit or miss and some staff are much better about it than others, not to mention a bit of push/shove tolerated from clientele as well. Waitlists are primarily paper based, but if you're not vocal enough you can readily be sidelined by a more vocal customer. It can be hard to flag down waitstaff at the right times, so bit of patience goes a ways. Menu is a bit overwhelming in breadth, which is inclusive of more banquet-esque type offerings as well. My brother and I were mostly in the mood for noodles/carby stuff so we hit those notes. Nothing was terribly noteworthy or done particularly well, but all around decent foods. XLB (Xiao Long Bao) - 3/5 Decently rich filling, but the interior integrity of the dumplings is lacking, resulting in an excessively mushy texture. My take is that these might have been frozen. On the positive side, the skin maintained its integrity, even though tin foils are used, which I've had issues with elsewhere. Beijing Style Meat Pancakes - 4/5 Flavor for these boys were basically on point and brought me back to my childhood. However, they are on the thinner side in terms of filling, which in my opinion yields a less satisfying bite. You get more dough covering, but each bite of meat is smaller than optimal. The browning of the pancake was good, but when it got to us it was almost soft on some parts, so might've been sitting around for a bit. Dandan Noodles - 3/5 The dandan noodles were tasty and packed an unexpectedly spicy heat (caught me off guard, and I eat plenty of spicy). Authenticity is debatable though as it tasted more like a northern Chinese take on the dish with a more fermented black bean flavor. The absence of mala was notable and the dish leaned towards sourness with pickled peppers. Didn't seem like the dish had any meat in it either, but the serving size was hearty. The noodles had a good bite and chewiness to them. Beef Noodle Soup - 4/5 The beef noodle soup was decent, but the broth tasted a bit thin and light, despite having a decent mouthfeel. The noodles were of the same type as the dandan noodles, but cooked softer. The dish offered a good serving size of both meats, tendon, and noodles, so pretty good value overall. read more

This place is definitely cheaper than some other Chinese restaurants but just as delicious! We took home more leftovers for about $20 less than we have at other places. I usually bring two 4-cup glass Pyrex dishes but ended up having to ask for a tiny takeout box for the rice. There was a bit of a wait at around 12 PM on Presidents' Day (Monday) but not too surprising. 1) West Lake Style Beef Soup ($11.95): - Egg drop soup with minced beef pieces and green onion and cilantro placed on top - Really flavorful and nicely salted - Huge portion (about 7-8 cups maybe) 2) Braised lamb belly pot ($15.95) - Had 10 large tofu pieces (1.5-2 inch cubes) and 15 small meat pieces, some with flat bones - The pieces looked more like short ribs - I was expecting the pieces to look squishy like pork belly but lamb probably has a different anatomy. There were some pieces that had distinct marbling though (the lighter-colored fat separation) - Liquid that it came in was more like a stew/marinade than soup and went great with rice. We took home leftovers and it had gelled the next day, so a good amount of collagen I think. 3) Braised beef tendon with sea cucumber ($20.95) I've never had either of these things before but we mainly ordered it for the collagen. - Beef tendon was incredibly tender. - There weren't many sea cucumber pieces since it's an expensive ingredient. But it also came with mushrooms, green onions, and something like bamboo shoots possibly. - Sauce was nicely salted with a hint of sweetness. It had also gelled the next day and there was a lot of beef fat/tallow on the leftovers that went well with rice after heating. 4) Sticky rice bowl ($5.50) and braised pork rice ($6.50) - Both came with pork floss - Sticky rice came with some kind of sweet-and-sour sauce on top - Braised pork rice also had some kind of sauce that seeped in, probably the braising liquid for the pork.
