Service was top notch right out of the gate - the host was brilliant, the staff attentive and caring, and not enough can be said for complimentary wontons and tea. It was just lovely. Miso soup was good, if a bit salty. Our sushi for two was perfection - nigiri was smaller than usual, but for the better. Accents and garnishes - both for presentation and taste - were the icing on top of an already delicious cake. The kid's bear was likewise delightful, flavorful, and presented with finesse and care. Here is the reason I have given one star. It's not about the food. There is a sign on the door , it says MASKS REQUIRED, ONE PERSON IN AT A TIME.. I pulled up to pick up my order. I see a woman in the very small pickup room..NO MASK.. The young man behind the counter was getting drinks for her. He did not make her go outside and get a mask. She finally comes out, I step in, give my name, AND SHE WALKS BACK IN, IN THIS TINY SPACE, where only ONE person is to be AND STILL NO MASK AND STANDS RIGHT NEXT TO ME. I RAN OUT WITH MY FOOD. We have been going to Hunan Pan for the last 7 years, and watched it grow form a place my wife and I would go for sushi alone at the sushi bar, to a hopping place where sushi is now the main drawing point. The entire staff is eager to make your visit as special as they can. Attentive and caring wait staff, a host (Joe) who comes around to be sure all is well-and of course the best sushi I know of in the state, and Ive been a sushi lover going on 20+ years. We continually introduce new friends to this place, who then make it their own once they have bitten into the unique and artistic (and beyond tasty!) rolls. Try it. Great Chinese takeout! They do a great job with popular takeout dishes such as Fried Rice and Lo Mein, which is never too greasy like some other places. Great pork egg rolls and they throw in those awesome fried egg noodles as well... whatever they're called. I've also been told that they have a great sushi bar, though not really my thing. read more

Sushi is very good here but quite pricy. The best rolls are the specials but they run around 10-12 on average so try splitting a few different rolls with someone. The hot and sour seafood soup is the most superior soup selection one can choose! They have many unique sushi rolls. The lobster roll was very good. Many of the roll types did contain tempura. They did not have an appetizer of sashimi,which is what I usually go for, but maybe that's so everyone can sample the seafood soup! So, this place is pretty good overall when comparing the Sushi landscape in Shelton. The only real rival is Red Lotus, another location I enjoy. I like how fast the service is, everyone is attentive and the rolls are pretty good. NOTE: THIS WILL HAPPEN! After you order everything your waiter will ask you an indecipherable question. Just say no. She or he is asking to if you would like to upgrade a roll to the special of the day. The special of the day is always overpriced and nothing spectacular. This place is fantastic. I come here with coworkers a lot after work...so much that the waitstaff pretty much knows us by now. Super attentive service, extremely friendly. I always end up ordering more than I can eat, but it's worth it to bring some home! Try the sweet potato tempura. Their mixed drinks are also not to be missed. Came here on a Saturday for lunch with friends who live in the area. It was pretty dead, so we got very attentive service. We only had Chinese food, so I can't speak to the sushi and Japanese food. We ordered: --Beef lo mein: very fresh, not too greasy, with long, tender chunks of beef and bright vegetables --Chicken and green beans: a bit salty, but that's expected. The chicken is very tender and juicy, sliced paper thin. The green beans were crispy and the sauce was great. --Sweet and sour prawns: these things are huuge! The batter was great, and the sauce was good too. It came with cashews, which were a nice touch. They also randomly put ferns on top as a garnish. Oh well. read more

We got take out delivered on Friday and they said 45 minutes it got there in 20! Food was hot and fresh sushi was fresh and amazing. We also got sesame chicken which was good. I've been to Hunan Pan a couple times. Both times the food was quite good. The service is good - although may be slightly overbearing at times. The wait staff can tend to hover waiting for any opportunity to refill drinks or offer more food. The atmosphere is nice-casual & unassuming. The food presentation is nice with all the dishes adorned with pretty orchids. When you sit along the back wall of windows, during the day there's a pleasant view of a stream and a lush grassy area. I wasn't able to have sashimi as I was pregnant both visits. Although; I did have sushi (California roll) without raw fish, which was good. Hard to screw up a California roll. I had the crab rangoon as an appetizer. It was tasty. The cooked dishes were very yummy. The beef broccoli had fresh, crisp broccoli cooked perfectly in a savory sauce. I also had pad thai with tender, flavorful chicken. Overall in my experience the food and service are good. It's a little pricey but not unreasonable for what you get. We'll be back. read more

Food was great, service was great, will be using this as my go-to place for sushi. The seafood soup is out of this world. You end up getting a huge pot of soup stuffed with all sorts of seafood that you share with whoever you're there with. Between my fiancé and I we were able to get two full bowls of soup each just from one order. And the price is right! The sushi is extremely fresh and you could tell that these sushi chefs know what they are doing as everything is beautifully displayed on the plate. I've gotten both delivery and carry out from them. It's always exactly as I order. The owners are very friendly and strive to keep their customers happy. My daughter loves the wonton crisps they serve. I asked for some one time with a carry out order and the owner told me he made them fresh in the restaurant instead of buying them. Went here again recently. I ordered the General Tso's tofu hoping it would have a crispy fried outside. Instead, it fell off of the tofu and was a bit mushy. I decided to not get that for my future visits. Since then, I have been sticking to appetizers and veggie lo mein. All of those are very good. One night we stopped here to get takeout for dinner. Local Chinese restaurant. It is a quality location with the Basement renovated and has specialty event hosted there. Food is good but I personally go there for the sushi and complimentary tea. Owner is very friendly and if you look in the local paper there are occasionally coupons. The service is a little too good because at time you may feel like you're being hovered but let them know and you'll be okay. It's set back behind the main road which is an attraction for most. If you're in Shelton for bushiness, pleasure, or because you live there. This is a tried and true establishment. I recommend the specialty rolls. While they are a little pricy, it is fresh sushi and with tea and crackers it is usually more than enough for a meal. Try the panzu sauce. It is a lighter soy sauce and personally a favorite. This place used to be decent. Went there yesterday for a drink and a couple rolls with my girlfriend for my birthday. The sushi was warm and they hovered more than usual. I find it so strange that they literally stand 3 feet away and stare the whole time. Gave us our check before we even finished our food and walked by at least 30 times(we were the only customers there) to see if we had put our credit card out. The weird lady that fills the drinks tried taking our plate before we were even done. I am a carnivore of crab rangoon and only ate 2 of the 6 as they had an odd taste. Spicy tuna looked like ham salad as it was completely pureed and also only ate 2 out of the 8. Hunan Pan is the best sushi restaurant in the area! We have dined there several times. Each experience has been nothing short of 'amazing'. The sushi - as well as all of the other appetizers and entrees - is the freshest, top quality, and prepared perfectly. The service is consistently wonderful. I normally subscribe to the rule that places that serve Chinese and Japanese food together are a no-no, but not Hunan Pan. . By far some of the BEST sushi I have ever had, and I have had a lot. The special rolls are so well balanced with flavor and the sauces paired with them make soy sauce dipping a crime. The Tokyo Dumplings are the best food there is, period. Pricey but worth it. The Chinese food is so fresh and light, not gloppy and all salt. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff is very friendly and remembers who you are. Nice place to eat. It's kind of a pain to find because it's on a couple side street bit there is a sign. Fresh sushi prepared by the chef right in front of you at the bar. Good portions at a fair price (I think?) I would go back again. I had the general's tsao chicken also. The breading on it was nice and light although I wish it was crisp. One thing though... Ordered takeout last night and I have to say everything was Great! Hot and sour soup was excellent and came with old style crunchy noodle packages which no one gives you any more. Fried dumplings were excellent as well with a delicate crispy dough covering and flavorful meat inside unlike others. Chicken & broccoli was right on par with loads of chicken and perfectly cooked broccoli in a flavorful light brown sauce. They even included small packets with extra sauces, fortune cookies and tea! Can't think of the last time I had take out which included Chinese tea. Highly recommend!!! read more

Decided to try the new location for Hunan Pan after not visiting the old place for quite a while due to the food being "just ok". Ordered take out and was very pleased. The seafood dishes were very fresh tasting and the beef/chicken was pretty lean and tender. Sauces were very good in all dishes. Not too oily or greasy. Great flavor. Delicious wonton soup and tasty egg rolls. Don't know if it is a different crew on Commerce Dr. but think the food is an upgrade since the last time I ate at the old location. Delivery was extremely fast and I appreciated being able to order and pay through Yelp. The egg drop soup was very hot but just ok. Unfortunately, the fried won tons for the soup were very stale. I've given this place 4 stars for sushi and now I have to rate them for my latest Chinese food meal which was so bad that one star is too much! Sure, I ordered a breaded and deep fried chicken lunch special for about $8 bucks (take out), but I didn't expect to have to abandon my meal because it was so awful. I guess since it was soaked in sauce that I shouldn't be surprised that by the time I opened the bag at my desk that the breading was soggy, but these pieces looked and tasted like they were soaked in liquid for a day after being fried. Not one crunch! Just over soaked, wet, tasteless, soggy breading. This was just plain disgusting! I couldn't stomach more than a few bites and ended up just eating the rice that came with it which I seasoned with a bit of duck sauce. That was my lunch, rice and duck sauce!!!
