The food was the best and it was not the worst. It was just ok, better than a lot of Chinese restaurants I've eaten at, it was a very pippin place when we got there, they had way to many phone orders that it took away from the people trying to dine in the place. Our food took forever and it was very small portions compared to our other diners in the restaurants portions. The waiter didn't even ask if we wanted anything to drink she just served us water and tea, lol I'm a little bit grateful because I really didn't need the extra calories but my family wasn't to happy. The price wasn't that great either, at other Chinese restaurants we would have leftovers to bring home for $30. I would probably go back but maybe try the lunch menu. read more

Having been to MANY Chinese restaurants all over LA and frequenting several great ones I was feeling snobby when it came to Chinese food IN Concord, CA. Hunan definitely shut me up! BOMB Chinese food in Concord....who would've thought! (We're not at the airport, I can say BOMB!!!) We came here with a group of 12, STARVING (thanks to the LONG ceremony), to celebrate my favorite niece's first communion (relax, she's my only niece). We ordered a RIDICULOUS amount of food almost to the point of appalling the waiter. EVERYTHING was delicious, EVEN the vegetables (As a MEATATARIAN, I hardly touch the green stuff), but here are my favorites: 1. Honey Walnut Shrimp - saucy but still very crispy, the batter also had a nice flavor 2. Orange Beef - crispy on the outside but still moist on the inside with just the right amount of sauce 3. Twiced Cooked Pork - good quality pieces of meat, tender with great flavor 4. Combination Meat Fried Rice - very generous portions of meat, delicious and not oily (most fried rice are) The restaurant was also very clean, even the bathrooms! As for the service it was FAST and REALLY FRIENDLY (unlike most Chinese restaurants in LA). They also have a big parking lot, good for dine in or take out. Hunan is one of my favorite spots. They dish out seriously good food and generous portions. The food is always consistently good, and they never seem to cut corners in the kitchen. Hunan has fed our community for so long that their dishes are almost nostalgic. They are polite and friendly to all the people who go there, regulars or not. Yet another surprisingly good Chinese restaurant. Like other yelper's on here, I had driven by this place countless amounts of times, only in hesitation to visit it, due to its kind of crummy, majorly outdated exterior. Well, having prior experience discovering whole in the wall joints only to find them to be hidden jems, I should have known better. Located off Clayton rd, in a not real shabby area, the place ( as you can envision) is not the most aesthetically pleasing looking place, however, don't judge this book by its cover. The restaurant is actually quite spacious inside with more than enough seating and turns out to execute some pretty tasty food. We came here to to get food to go. Upon entering we were greeted by an extremely upbeat friendly lady. She was exceptionally helpful as far as assisting us in ordering. She even showed us a portfolio of pictures of all there different dishes to choose from which was quite helpful. We ended up getting General Tao Chicken ( not spicy), Chicken Chow Mein, Pork fried rice and Broccoli Chicken with white meat in a light sauce ( you can always choose between light or dark sauces) She also kicked down some free spring rolls which was awesome! Total came to about $27.00 Broccoli Chicken was fantastic!! General Tao Chicken was ok, I liked the fact that it was skinless, sauteed chicken instead of fried ( which you can have fried also here) but the sauce was not the greatest. Chicken chow mein and fried rice I did not try, but my hun loved it! I also found the spring rolls to be crisp, tasty and delightful. Overall, I found the food to be much better than expected. The prices were reasonable and the service we received from the lady helping us was just hands down fantastic! I've passed this place THOUSANDS of times but because of my bff we ended up coming here since Red Dragon is closed for the summer?! BS - Plenty of parking at this old drive in turned into Chinese restaurant - Looks are deceiving here, GIVE IT A TRY! - There were quite a few customers that just do take out - service was decent and food was good! Oh man! Even tho I'm an avid yelping beast, I still am very cautious to try new Chinese. I mean my first option was Red Dragon, which is super close to my house. And only the bar was open. There was a stupid sign saying they're closed for summer vacation. ehhh. So we ended up going to "the place pass New Lim's" as my bff described it. I was so SKEPTICAL! omg because I've lived off Clayton for like 5 years and never ONCE thought about stopping at this "drive in" looking place! Nervously I walked in and we were greeted promptly. There were 2 other tables being occupied, so "hey at least someone is eating here, right?!" We ended up ordering potsticks (if you read any of my Chinese reviews - I heart potstickers), Lemon Chicken, Master Chef's Prawns and House Fried Rice. WARNING: Potstickers are good but take 20 MINUTES!!! lol. And they don't have a premade potsticker sauce. Personally, I appreciate a good potsticker sauce but I def know how to make my own so all good. We ended up eating them after everything else. They tasted really fresh like they weren't frozen but then again you can never tell nowadays. FREE spring roll! lol. With a real good sweet n' sour sauce! But also be prepared, its going to be pretty hot when it comes out! but definitely maybe even worth getting as a full appetizer! Right after I got my spring roll, my YELP mobile came up and I started to read the few but proud yelpers that reviewed this place. And I felt a lot better. I'm not sure why this place hadn't come on my radar during my quest for Chinese close to my home, but hey we ended up where we needed to be! Lemon Chicken was great - real chicken chunks breaded in a sweet sauce. It's probably top 2 in lemon chicken I've ever had. The sauce isn't really lemon tho, its kind of orange. I was hoping that my Master Chef's Prawns were going to be like the same style of frying that the lemon chicken was but it was more of like the skewers type fried shrimp, very similar to Hawaiian style shrimp. Nevertheless the Hunan sauce was AMAZINGLY great. Lots of flavor and spice and sweetness! I was really impressed. It was far better then my favorite place, Chef Choy :(( The House Fried Rice was really good as well. I'm really surprised about this place but everything was really good. We wish we would have just gotten Veggie Fried Rice but nevertheless this dish was great and went well with everything we ate. In conclusion, I'll be going back to this place. I hope some people really read my review and try it out! It was really good and it totally was under my radar. I hope my review brings some more people to this small restaurant! read more

So I read about Hunan here on Yelp, and had to try it out. I have to say I am definitel a fan and have been back at least 3 times since I first tried the place. First off, the price is excellent. You can feed your entire family with 3 dishes, soup, and rice for under 30 bucks. I have only ever taken the food out, and rarely do I see people eating there. So I guess its mostly a takeout place. They package things up for you nicely for takeout and the food stays hot until you get home. When you have larger orders, they even give you boxes to help you carry the food. read more

Had their wonderful dinner for two takeout and we had so much food we had to take half of it home after we stuffed our tummies with it! My elderly blind mother told me it was the best Chinese food she has ever tasted! The nice gentlemen who gave me the carry out were too kind as to also include free egg rolls with our mealMy mother enjoyed the honey walnut prawns as she commented even the walnuts were fresh and yummy:) I had my usual dish there snow peas chicken no carrots topped with almonds, to die for just a little too much sauce.They forgot to give us napkins so they need a little more organization and they will receive their well deserved five star Michelin rating! Please frequent this gem of a restaurant and support this business especially during CoVid! They said they hope to have indoor dining at 100 percent in may sometime! So Dad decides to deviate from our usual chinese spot and calls me to let me know that this is the place he's ordering from. I wasn't particuraly hungry so I said eh I'll nibble off whatever. Well I am glad they have HUGE portions because I "nibbled" alot... on everything that was ordered. They had a szechuan shrimp dish that was heavenly, lots and lots of sauce and enoigh spice to make me happy. WE got the typical fried rice and chow mein (large portions of meat with both fyi), along with a beef dish and a chicken dish that came smohtered in a sweet sauce ( no idea what they were but both were delicious) The abundance of sauce is what made me happy. Their hot and sour soup also has a definite kick to it! Their egg rolls have actual filling instead of some of those palces where you grt just alot of pastry in each bite. Solid 3 stars. Great lunch specials, as far as pricing & quantity. Service is quick & efficient, so for those on a limited-time work break or just crunched for time, this place is an option. The food comes out hot n fresh, and tastes good. It's a bit small inside (maybe 12 tables total), so not sure if dinner would overwhelm the kitchen staff. Also, it's pretty bland as far as decor & ambiance... as in, having NONE, like no music & dead silent except for the loud-voiced, perhaps partially deaf? gentleman who was hollering across the table at his friend / date. This is basic, old-fashioned, and good American-Chinese restaurant food. The value can't be beat. It's good for the price and for it's not pretending to be anything fancy. If you want high-end or authentic Chinese food, there are plenty of choices in the area. But sometimes you want old school. It's not a "destination" restaurant unless you've had a crappy day and need to be comforted. I have always driven past this little hole in the wall, afraid to try it. I've always gone to New Lim's down the street, and I like it there. I've seen that Hunan has had great reviews, but I'm always under the impression that it's closed because it looks like it half the time! My husband's colleague used to live in the neighborhood and said that it's great. So per all suggestions, I gave it a shot and called in an order. The food was fast (of course) and tasty. It was also very inexpensive. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and made me want to come back to give him my business. Good food, great portion sizes, and amazing prices. I've been for lunch and dinner both sit down and take out - I recommend sitting in for the lunch special if you can ($5.95-$7.95 for appetizer, soup, entree, and steamed or fried rice). When you take out they'll usually add a couple free egg rolls! Can't argue with free (: I can honestly say their hot and sour soup is one of the best, if not the best I've ever had. A few big shrimps in there too! If you enjoy spicy and peppery, this is a must! The Mongolian beef, mu shu pork, chicken wings (appetizer), and shrimp with lobster sauce are among the entrees I've had from there. Highly recommend the Mongolian beef and mu shu pork. The chicken wings are okay, could use a bit more flavor. The shrimp with lobster sauce is good, but it can get tiring because they add a lot of sauce and it's very thick. I'd get it again though. Let's start out by talking Food: First of all, it was just OK. It isn't what everyone is raving about. I tried all of the things some of the past reviewers suggested. And I'll tell you; to truly know what GOOD chinese food is, you need to try out LOTS of restaurants. I equate this place to PANDA express. The mongolian beef was extremely saucy, and the house special chow mein was sub-par. Service: HORRIBLE!!!! The place closed @ 10PM; we walked in at 9PM. The dialogue from the head waiter was this (no paraphrasing): Head Waiter: Will you be taking a long time? Us: Excuse me? Head Waiter: We close early tonight. Will you be taking a long time, because we need to leave right at closing. Us: But you close at 10PM, right? And it's only 9. Head Waiter: Yes. Is it your first time here? Us: Yes it is. Head Waiter: Oh ok. I guess it's a good time to finally try it. Then, he proceeded to play on his iPhone as we looked over the menu. C'mon! I get that this place is not a high end restaurant; I also understand that we live in a technology filled society -- but is customer service and decency a back seat to your 'ANGRY BIRDS' high score? It's my belief that there's still nothing as good as your first impression. And buddy, that first impression is a lasting one. My family that was with me that night, pleaded with me to give this place 1 star. But, because the total bill came out to a cheap price, I'm giving you 1 extra star. I hope the workers read this review and discuss how they can better improve their service. And maybe then we MAY return. With any luck, they'll use their smart phones to give 'Angry Birds' a break, and use their smart phones (on their lunch breaks) to yelp their own restaurant. read more

Deciding on a Chinese food restaurant is not easy, thank god for yelp. We picked Hunan because of the really good reviews. This is why it pays to be a yelp-er. The food was excellent. We ordered to go and everything was really good and really hot. A yelp-er stated "the best Chow Mien" I must agree. We ordered chicken chow mein, broccoli beef, pot stickers, house fried rice, and lemon chicken. Everything was delicious and it was only $33.00. I've been going here for years now, the food is excellent, the service is great, and they have a great memory. Honestly, Chinese food in the far east bay is pretty much the same everywhere, except for Hunan. When you say "extra spicey" on your order, most places just add in a couple more peppers, but here, they actually cook it into the sauce! I might be biased because I've been coming here for so long but I think it might be safe to say that Hunan is definitely in the top 5 places to eat in Concord category. read more
