I love this place! One of the gems I missed most when I moved. I order the same thing every time: salt and pepper chicken wings, beef chow fun with gravy, won ton soup and combination fried rice. Everything was delicious. Won ton soup is such a simple soup but this place has the best won ton soup. I've never had anything like it. Mainly consists of fatty pork chunks, cabbage, and pork wontons. Something about those fatty pork chunks in the soup makes this soup different than others. There's a lot of overpriced mediocre Chinese restaurants in this area. You know the ones...in strip malls, which you'd be fine with since the food is OK if the prices were at least cheaper? Well, while craving Chinese food, we were on the hunt to try a new place. We didn't want to pay a fortune and we wanted the food to be good. We're happy we tried Hunan Restaurant! We found what we were looking for!! This isn't by any means the best ever Chinese restaurant, but it's a super solid Americanized Chinese restaurant and the prices are great. We'll likely return! We ordered 5 dishes for the two of us...yes, we're piggies! The total was $46 for our to-go order. We had a generous dinner for two, followed by lunch for two, and lunch for one on day 3. Value is great here! Dishes are about $8-13. Take out portions come in standard Chinese take out boxes, except for the Honey Walnut Shrimp dish which came in a plastic tray flip top container. We ordered: - BBQ Pork Chow Fun - Dry (This comes wet or dry. I asked which was preferable and the staff said everyone likes it dry, so that's what we ordered. It was good, but the portion could have been bigger. I'd order this again though. I love Chow Fun noodles!) - Hunan's Combo Fried Rice (Fried Rice isn't really my thing, but it was the husband's choice. This is decent. No complaints, but no compliments. It wasn't greasy which was great. Fried Rice in general is boring to me.) - Mushu Pork (This was more like Mushu Pork Burritos. The wraps were the size of tortillas which was strange, but the actual mixture was good. We got 4 big wraps which still wasn't enough for the portion of meat. It never is, is it?) - Honey Walnut Shrimp (Super solid! I'd order this again. The sauce was good on this. Sometimes it's too mayo-ish or liquidy? This wasn't. Shrimp was cooked really well too. This was definitely my favorite of the dishes we ordered.) - General Tso's Chicken (Husband thought this was honestly made incorrectly. It was over seasoned/too salty. He kind of thought it was an accident that maybe they just messed up this evening. This dish was just OK for me. I'd try a different dish next time though like the Sesame Chicken perhaps.) - Bonus Free Spring Rolls (4 free spring rolls! These were ok. They're the small ones, so there's not too much filling though) They have a binder of photos of their dishes you can browse, which is kind of cool. I think the photos could be better quality though, but they're still useful. I like to browse photos before I order (usually on Yelp). Maybe I can help them with new photos? ;) I didn't take any photos this time since we ordered take out. There was a long wait for take out when we arrived on a Friday night. They said it would be 45 minutes to an hour. It's a very popular take out spot! Decor inside is minimal and basic. This isn't the type of place you eat in. The food took a bit longer than expected. We left and came back about 50-55 minutes later (filled up gas and went to Safeway down the street for a few bits) and we had to wait another 5-10 minutes. They gave us some free spring rolls for the wait. How nice! The staff here were very nice and helpful. There's a big parking lot too. Think this used to be like a Foster's Freeze or some sort like a Car Hop Diner. Anyway, this is a solid, convenient, decently priced Chinese restaurant. It ticked the boxes for me. It's definitely better than what I've found around, but I'm still definitely pining for the true gem with absolutely amazing food (and still decent prices). For now, thank you Hunan Restaurant! A solid FOUR stars simply on food quality alone! Although it's location isn't in the greatest part of Concord, it stands alone as one of the best places to pick up Chinese food. The dining area seemed clean and pleasant, as there were a lot of people dining out on a busy Friday night. I wouldn't mind eating here next time. As for service, no issues. The staff helped me out on some great recommendations. Now for my delicious take-out order: ~ Twice Cooked Pork ($7.50): This had bamboo shoots, green peppers, garlic, a light chili flavor, cabbage, tender pork slices, all whipped together in a gravy sauce. They gave us so much that the gravy was oozing out of the box. ~ House Fried Rice ($6.50): Wow this will fill you up on its own! They added large chunks of beef. Soft pieces of chicken, and about five normal size shrimp. Imagine all that! ~ Beef Chow Fun (also $6.50): There's two choices; one with gravy and dry. The hostess showed me a photo album of their dishes. I chose the gravy dish because it had broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and of course the flat rice noodles. This definitely was made right! It was just a great combo. ~ Prawns with Honey Glazed Walnut ($9.50), aka Honey Walnut Shrimp: Mmm mmm mmm! This too was also made just right! Large crispy breaded prawns in a not-over-powering sweet sauce. I'd say these may be even better than Yan's in Walnut Creek. Nothing here was overly greasy, nor was it overly salty. Garlicy maybe, but I love garlic. They even gave me some spring rolls, on the house! $32 total, not bad at all! Maybe next time I will dine in to take some pics, but for now I'm just gonna savor it! Whenever I pull into the parking lot at Hunan restaurant, I feel like I should be ordering through an intercom and waiting for someone to come out on roller skates with my food. I think it's so funny that they kept the structures left over from the old A&W drive-in intact. This place needs a serious makeover, inside and out. That being said, I will no longer let the appearance of this place stop me from eating or ordering from there. The food is so good, and the service is very friendly. It is now my go-to Chinese food spot. Their honey walnut prawns are pretty standard. The potstickers take 20 minutes to cook, but sadly aren't worth the wait. They're not bad, but if i'm gonna wait an extra 20 minutes for an appetizer they'd better be out of this world. My favorite dishes from Hunan are their string beans with beef and their beef chow fun. Yum! Like I said, don't let the appearance of this place deter you from going there. It's really a diamond in the rough. read more

The exterior of the restaurant was a little confusing to me. There is nothing that tells you this is a Chinese restaurant except the sign. The walls are bland and the entire place looks like it used to be a Sonic or some other form of fast food establishment. The inside is not as bad as the outside, and the dining room actually looks very nice. It's very spacious, the white table clothes made me feel like I was eating at a more high class restaurant, and the smell coming from the kitchen was just divine. Shortly after being seated we were offered hot tea and ice water. We ordered the dinner combo D. It comes with your choice of their house chow mein or fried rice, hot & sour soup, honey walnut prawns, beef with string beans, and pot stickers. Giant portions of everything listed for only $14.95 per person. Our server also brought us a complimentary spring roll. It was small, cut in half, and had sweet & sour sauce drizzled on top. The hot and sour soup was delicious. I liked the bits of seaweed and tofu. The textures were polar opposites of each other, and both added just that much more flavor. I also liked that the soup had a good balance of sour and hot, and the giant prawns floating. The honey walnut prawns were very good. A little displeasing visually with the coagulated sauce all over. However, the flavor on the shrimp, and more so on the sauce was out of this world. The candied walnuts added just a little more sweetness. The beef with string beans were delicious. With a little more green beans than slices of beef, it kind of feels you're eating a little healthier. Just forget about the tasty sauce it's drowning in to complete that fantasy. The fried rice is easily my favorite dish. With a mixture of fresh vegetables, eggs, plus a trifecta of protein (prawns, chicken, and beef), this is a dish I could eat hot or cold, day or night, forever and ever. The pot stickers were served fresh and extremely hot. I loved that they perfected the chewy, crunchy texture of the dumpling, but I do think the meat could have had a little more flavor to it. Our server was amazing. She waited on three tables, both quickly and efficiently, making sure everyone was having a pleasant experience. HOT and SOUR soup tasted clean. balanced. and came temperature HOT. Vegetables Egg Roll tasted great, not OILY at all. Pot stickers perfectly cook, although, I would want TRUE HOT OIL and not just regular vegetable oil to add at the table. Sizzling Beef plate is a true site, a good presentation at the side of the table. Combination Fried Rice is good and perfectly fried (not oily, I appreciate this so much). Sezchuan Shrimps slightly sweet but I think it is more like SWEET and SOUR shrimps. ON the side, HSC was great. BIG CHUNKS of chicken deep fried in savory honey sesami sauce. ** yummy **. -- Plus. a nice well spoken waiter help too. Granted I am chinese but my Cantonese is marginal. Hard-to-find good Chinese food in the Clayton Valley area, but this place fits the bill. From the outside it's one of those places that just blends into the surroundings-- I've passed it for years without giving it a thought. This is my no-frills, comfort food haven. When it's time of a hearty plate of real-life chow fun and I want to get it in Concord, there's no place better. Don't believe me? Consider that the chow fun is such a local secret with Asians in Concord that tonight they had run out completely. So I ordered the house fried rice with curry, their "Master Chef's Prawns" and some chicken instead. The prawns are butterflied, quick fried, and served with some tangy and spicy thick sauce. Very nice. Curry in the rice was aromatic and lively without being overbearing - also very nice. Pricing has always been VERY reasonable, and it's quiet and unassuming enough that when I don't feel like cooking, I'll just slip over there to eat with a good book and don't feel the need to put on airs. Finding good Chinese food in places like Concord and Clayton are no easy task. Hunan doesn't appear as very much from the street, but I'm now a regular there. read more

Been here a few times. It's one of those Chinese restaurants where the food is worth coming back for over and over again. Every time I'm in there picking up food there always people walking in and out for pick up. Their dining area is lit up with a good amount of daylight. I feel bad giving this rating, but it has such a high rating, and I want to be honest. We were very disappointed with the flavor and quality of the dishes. Won Ton soup was salty and bland but the wontons were chewy. Sweet and sour pork was probably the best flavor wise, but the breading was really crunchy. Master Chef's Prawns - not battered in the way you would expect a traditional honey walnut prawns would be, but more like bread crumb coating. sauce is okay with this entree but the batter type is key for this dish. Mongolian Beef - this dish lacked in the meat and was heavy on the rest of the ingredients. and the beef that it contained was very soft and had a rubbery texture. I've been going to this place for years and it has been around forever (which should be a good sign)! Great food, friendly owners, wonderful service. The Egg Foo Young (not on the menu) is amazing! ! Takes extra time to cook but always worth the wait! The Hot and sour soup (and really all their soups) are super tasty. Also, they always give free spring roll appetizers whether you're dining in or picking up and they are crispy and delicious. Tons of options on their menu including classic dishes. A little old school in decor but that's what gives the place character in my opinion. My only complaint is that I wish they were open on Tuesday's! read more

We visited Hunan on a Monday evening. We ordered chicken chow mein, sweet & sour chicken, mushroom chicken, combo rice, orange chicken and potstickers. The chow mein and rice had a wonderful taste! Loved both. The potstickers were plump and delicious. Now the sweet & sour chicken, orange chicken and the mushroom dishes weren't on the same platform as the other 3 items in my order. The sweet & sour chicken was just dry chicken breast pieces cut up in a all too sweet sauce. The orange chicken was the same story. The mushroom dish was ok but wouldn't dare order it again. Our total bill was well over $50. I feel the potions weren't what they should be. A while ago I decided that I wanted to expand my horizons and try new places and new dishes and flavors. I realized that I kept going to the same places and ordering the same things. So I started letting the staff choose my dishes and making my menu. I did this over here and was not disappointed at all! I was treated to an amazing wonton soup with chicken, orange chicken, beef with green beans and house fried rice. The food was plentiful, but the FLAVOR WAS EXTREMELY GOOD. I have lived 2 blocks from here and finally went inside to have a meal. I was not disappointed. I had already had some take out once, which completely sold me on their hot and sour soup. My eating in experience was just as good. Had soup again, yum, and also kung pau chicken and pork chow mien, and everything was on point. As far as 'American' Chinese food goes, this place is a winner. I always get the honey walnut shrimp, and the chow mein. A bit more on the saltier side, but that's the way I like it! Their portions are more than generous, and the staff is super friendly every time I pick up my food. When I went to pick up my good, they had sanitized pens and a separate place where they put the used pens. I actually don't see a lot of restaurants doing that, so it's assuring to know they are adhering to Covid standards. The place is a dive-y hole in the wall, but it reminds me of how restaurants used to be when I was a kid. Restaurants nowadays try way to hard to be hipster when the food isn't even that good. The food at Hunan is tasty and moderately priced. I especially like their Shrimp and Lobster Sauce, a dish I used to order all the time when I lived back east and is hard to find on the west coast. Currently writing this review while waiting for food to come. It's a typical busy Friday night and there is literally one waitress serving around 15 tables. We've been here an hour and counting. It seems that takeout orders have much higher priority here than sit in orders which makes no sense to me. Not sure what was meant in other reviews by "excellent service" but I'm hungry and this isn't cutting it. Update: Finally got food after over 1.5 hours of waiting. Ordered Mongolian beef, Hunan shrimp, and General Tsao's chicken. All meats we're soaked in thick, overly sweet syrup and there were significantly more peanuts in the chicken dish than there was chicken. Overall flavor was a 2/5. Never come here please. read more
