Oh my god. If you're into Hunan/湘菜 flavor profile, look no further!!! Hunan is my top 5 fave cuisines and I have searched high and low for new go-to Hunan spots around SGV. There have been several new ones that opened ip in recent years with Hunan food getting more popular and I've tried them all. This place is undefeated.. ! Prices are super reasonable. Unfortunately the vibe is on the divey-er side and it has fluorescent lighting but no fluff! A lot of the bad reviews were from when the restaurant was owned by previous management which brings it's Yelp rating down but wow WHAT A GEM OF A FIND. This spot and Dong Ting Chun (slightly pricier experience but the ambiance is better, more suitable for a meal with friends) are super legit. Tried this restaurant because my Chinese friend recommended that it's a hidden little gem in Monterey Park and it's price is cheap. I don't think it can be considered cheap. The price was higher than a few "normal price" places I ate, but the food was definitely very delicious. They welcomed guests until the closing time which we really appreciated. I have been eating at this restaurant for well over 20 years, and it still remains my favorite "authentic" Hunan restaurant in Los Angeles. First, I use the word "authentic" sparingly, because I feel like the word is becoming more and more subjective these days. However, for this restaurant, I can only say that it is authentic in closeness to eating in Hunan China. To start, many people don't understand "authentic" Chinese food, and when they order the real deal, they sort of don't understand or aren't accustomed to the new flavor profiles. Like for example, if you've never had "Sweet Chicken" which translates to frog meat, then it's almost going to be immediately off-putting to most. Hunan food can also be off-putting to people who (to borrow a quote from comedian Nigel Ng's persona of Uncle Roger), "don't like flavor". What I mean by this is that Hunan cooking comes with a lot of chili peppers and naturally, it will come with a lot of chili oil. I've heard and seen people complain about the amount of "grease and oil", but if you're really looking for most authentic Chinese food, it's going to be somewhat greasy. Think about Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, when they were in Chinatown and Jackie Chan got him "Eel", and Tucker replied with "eating from a box of grease", but turns out Tucker liked the food. About the quality of some of the food. Personally, I've never had an issue with the quality of fish orders. For anyone not in the know, most fish are going to be frozen, unless you have a big enough restaurant to have the resource to spend on a fish tank. People like to complain about how the fish head they service isn't fresh, to which I'll have to say, all fish head arrive frozen upon delivery. Simply just have to adjust expectations for reality. To that note, it's also an authentic Chinese dish, that not many people order, simply to just keep it in stock is a burden on space. But for passion's sake, they continue to carry it, while to keep themselves open cut many items off the menu during COVID. Lastly, coming to this restaurant, you need to come with an open-mind about the food. It's not going to be your typical: orange chicken, beef and broccoli, walnut shrimp dishes. This isn't Chinese-American fast food. As for authenticity, this is like coming to your Chinese aunt's place for dinner. If you're not afraid of flavor, spiciness, and real authentic Hunan food, this is your spot - and I hope you'll come and keep this restaurant up and running for another decade or more. So I was working downtown on a contract and over time got to know more than a few people onsite. One of those was one of those classically tough Chinese women I have had the fortune to meet in my life, like Helen Wang whose family was forced to march, lost everything and came to the US. I think I know that fierce eye when I see it. So she challenged me and a few guys in my department to come along and see if we could handle spicy Hunan. Spicy Hunan? Since when is Hunan spicy? That's supposed to be Szechuan right? Little did I know and I'm no newb. In fact, it's one of the things I've always like to do; find folks from the East Coast and show them some awesome Asian food here in Cali. Anyway, I had a lot to learn, and since my Mandarin has completely lapsed, I was at the mercy of my host. She ordered everything and kept it coming. Just wow. Other than the chicken feet (yum), I don't know what I ate, but I just kept eating. It was a marvel. And the best was saved for last, the fish head soup. There was this particular part of it that was like a slippery cartilage. My host says it's her favorite and reminds her of her childhood. It wasn't much to look at. You know that old line 'some people consider it a delicacy'. I'm now one of those people. You would be too with a little bravery. Just awesome. We came here perhaps around 10 years ago. We were really craving their Hunan style spicy steamed fish. The restaurant might have changed ownership as the fish didn't seem as good as we recalled. A bit on the salty side. Overall all the food was not that spicy at all. We ordered maximum spice level for both dishes: a hunan style diced chicken and the hunan style steamed tilapia. We felt that the chicken is pretty good, and not overly salted. The saltiness from the fish came from maybe too much use of picked vegetables and soy sauce. I love spicy food, so I thought Hunan food would satisfy my craving. I ordered take-out here. I was glad the lady over the phone was able to understand me and speak English unlike most of the places in Monterey Park. I ordered the Fish Head and some other dishes. Lady said it was going to take 20 minutes. I get there in 20 minutes, and of course my food wasn't ready. I ended waiting probably another 20 minutes. I would have been nice to at least give me a heads up on how long my food was going to take instead of having me just sit there waiting. Anyway, food was good and spicy. The Fish Head was delicious. The spiciness here can be very addicting, which is the reason I come here. Located adjacent to the Shun Fat Asian supermarket in Monterey Park off the Atlantic exit on 10 (take the Monterey Park exit) and it's about a block away on the right. It's not a fancy place, well lit and clean. The waitress does speak English, though I usually only see Asians eating here. They serve typical Hunan food, which means it can get really really spicy. So if you're looking for your neighborhood casual Chinese restaurant, this place may surprise you. I really like the Mongolian lamb and stewed fish here. I've ordered some other things after discovering this place but those really stand out. The chilis here are really spicy. Of course, you can wimp out and tell them not to make it so spicy (and they'll ask the level of spiciness so not to worry). Just make sure you ask for ice water and your teapot is full because you'll need it. Hunan food is not for the timid. I'll keep coming back, especially for the lamb. read more

We would highly recommend take-out as the waitresses consistently act as if they're doing you a favor rather than serving you - impatient with some "eyerolling" when you ask questions or for water or extra napkins (which you will need). Also, double check your bill as they've made "mistakes" on ours in the past. Oh - and on two occasions, we were told to change tables after being seated and having ordered because a larger group arrived. Has this ever happened to you in any other restaurant? I doubt it. Last time, we had shitty service and had numerous elder ladies and Mandarin speaking people cut in front of us and they employees let it happen. NOT THIS TIME! So my party decided to bring not one, but TWO Mandarin speakers! Because everybody knows that if you have a person with the native language do all the talking, we get better service! Oh shit. We were fucking wrong. Hell naw. We got cut again. This time by another group of old Asians and a younger group of Asians. What the fuck! Hey! Look over at us! We have TWO Mandarin speakers. Not only that, one of them has Taiwanese descent, and THE OTHER IS FROM THE HUNAN PROVINCE. HOW CAN YOU TURN AWAY YOUR OWN PEOPLE? Same shitty service. They were also trying to be resourceful by having bowls to be our teacups... very resourceful indeed.... Same spicy food. Pretty good, but I don't have Hunan descent, I can't handle the spice. Worse of all, when I got back to my apartment, I woke up in the middle of the night having stomach pains. Not only that, I wanted to throw up so badly. You know what they say. To be honest, when I saw the sign I read it as Human Restaurant. You know, like what we are. Humans. Imagine my surprise when I correctly see the N instead of M. Well, my quest to go full cannibalism must wait, what I did get was an even bigger surprise with a C grade at the window when I was walking in. Yes, vision of high school Math come rushing to my brain at that point. Usually a C rating would send your average person running to the hills and stomping on some roaches in the process, but let's examine this for a second.. This is in Monterey Park. This is a restaurant that is attached to a market. This restaurant has its entire menu in Chinese, so to them, a C rating is no different than an A. Let's face it, you expect a little dirt in your food and I have never gone in for the grading rank anyways. Especially with exotic food an A rating would just mean it's not authentic. I did find it a bit difficult to get good service though and really, that's what the A-okay rating is all about. You have to be aggressive, especially if you don't look Asian at all, they figure you just were looking for a panda express and said "fuck it" and stopped here. You have to be really aggressive in getting their attention and asking questions is a big plus considering the way you order would have someone completely lost in translation. The big thing because of the language barrier is that you have to put your trust in there hands for some of it and be very precised in what you like or don't like. The rest will just come naturally. If organs are for white guys, then Hunan is for Chinese guys. Bring them to this dirty little place by Shun Fat with a "C" and see them sweat till they can't speak. It's fun. Just smelling the spice while waiting for seats outside in the night breeze on some random beat up chairs those old guys sit on is already a turn on. I love the "Little" "Fried" Lamb. It's lamb with some skinny crunchy greens in small pieces. It's sooooooo good... Yum yum... But not that spicy... It's mainly for the taste of lamb. They chop it really thin. It's gotten the texture. It's greasy. It's in chilis. So good... Thank God when things all fall apart there's still one I can do: eat well... And then here comes the steam fish in miso: This's not that spicy too. The miso (not sure what it's called in English, you know, the preserved brown thing made of salty beans, it's "miso" in Japanese) brings out the taste of the fish. You can see the yellow oil of the fish come out and melt in the spicy soy sause base of chili and all those. This kind of fish has a coarser, harder texture so you can't over-dip it. It'll be okay to just sweep it throughout in the paste and eat it. The waitress will ask you how spicy you want. My advice for you is at least get the average. Come on, if the dish's designed to be spicy and you order it mild, they have to intensionally take out some of the ingrediants. It disturbs the overall composition and it usually turns out not good. I had non-spicy Thai fried rice the other day cuz the dude could not eat spicy. The restaurant had to therefore skip the chili oil and the rice became so fat and loose like Mexican, yuck! So, get over it. Accept the way things are people. Don't try to change them. Simply don't go if you can't handle spicy. It's Hunan. read more
