I love Hunan West. We moved to Flagstaff when I was 3 years old and remember going there with my mom when I was about 5 and went there often until I moved. When ever I come back to visit I always have to stop here. The crab cheese wontons are to die for and the hot and sour soup is awesome. My Favorite meal there is in the Hunan Special section of the dinner menu and is call Chin Pi Beef. It is twice cooked beef and I have had a hard time finding an equal in Phoenix. read more

Stopped by flagstaff for a quick lunch on the way cross the country. The owner was really friendly and nice. The food all seemed like American Chinese food on the menu but they tasted not bad. We got snow pea and shrimp, orange chicken and pork chow mein. The portion was very generous and the service was great. The price was also quite low for the amount and quality of food you get. Can't say anything bad about this place, I really only want Asian buffets but since Flagstaff lacks in that area this is the best it has to offer. Flagstaff is not a great town for Chinese food, but if you are in the mood for it, Hunan West is your best bet. The atmosphere is casual and cozy, with many tables crammed into a relatively small, squarish restaurant. The service is great and the food always comes very fast. The prices are absolutely unbeatable. For lunch, you can get a full meal for under $5. For dinner you can get a combo meal for under $8 which includes soup, an appetizer a full entree, and a soda!!! I recommend the General Tsao's chicken (spicy) or the Sesame Chicken (very sweet). The food tastes much fresher, more flavorful and higher quality than the Chinese buffets around town, although this is far from a fancy restaurant. read more

We picked up lunch specials after reading reviews on yelp. First of all, the lunch specials are small portions of food with a large portion of rice with 'wontons' but really fried sticks. Meat tasted like it had been sitting out for hours and Fried rice was so desert dry that it didn't even stick together. Later, my husband started to feel sick & laid down. The lady (the boss I think) was especially hostile to Chinese. Maybe she thought we were from mainland... You can tell by her face when she talked to us! The food was bad and we had to ask them to boil the wonton soup again because it was not done. Very bad experience. read more

Apparently Flagstaff isn't the place to go for (any) Chinese food. The potstickers were mealy and flavorless, the Mongolian beef (which they warned was spicy) was hardly discernible from broccoli beef (no spice). The soup was ok. Hunan West has good food and wonderful service at a reasonable price. I haven't had a dish that I didn't like and we've gone there for over 10 years now. I recommend the mongolian beef or tofu, beef with broccoli, general tso's chicken, crab cheese wontons, and the egg flower or hot and sour soups the most. I just moved here from New Mexico and a friend of mine introduced me to Hunan West. I was a little leary at first. Once I got inside, the owners wife came over to speak with my friend. She asked my name and has not forgotten it. Each time I go in there, she calls me by name and knows how much I like their egg flower soup. I have tried beef, pork, chicken, and chow mein and all of it has been great. I have met the owner and the wait staff are always friendly. It is very clean and I have never had to wait to be seated. The take out food is just as good as eating at the restaurant. I have thought about trying other chinese restaurants in town, but I cannot seem to convince myself to do it. read more
