This is a popular place right off the main road in Shaver. It gets pretty busy but it didn't take too long to receive our meal after we were able to order. The food is decent and obviously things cost what they do up on the mountain so no surprise with the costs involved. Plenty of outdoor seating very limited space indoor. They won't give you drink refills. They make you buy a whole new drink and said "couldn't afford it". They won't even offer a refill at a reduced cost make you buy a whole new cup. Not being familiar with the area we asked a few people where would be a good place to eat and they mentioned the hungry hut, said it even has a beer garden. First impression, I hope the food is better than the service. I have worked in customer service for over 40 years, on the phone, in food service and in retail. I didn't get the girls name but she had oversized fake eyelashes, dark hair and didn't smile ( at all ) or even attempt a smile. She didn't make any eye contact, just barely looked at you, talked quiet and mumbled which made it hard to hear her over the music in the beer garden. Her attitude was I'd rather be anyplace else but here. We ordered a couple of burgers and they would have been good except the buns tasted like they had been left out, they were crunchy / crispy on the outside and there was no lettuce or tomatoes on them. The onion rings are really good. The fries and onion rings by the way don't come with the burger you purchase separate. I ordered the grandma's berries milkshake, it was amazing the best shake I have ever had but for $10 I expected it to be a little larger. It was about the size of a small McDonalds soda ( just giving as an example of size in no way am I comparing them to McD.) For 2 burgers, one onion ring, one fries a shake and a beer it came out to over $65 not including the beer my friend got. We didn't get sodas. Like I said Shakes are amazing but overpriced. I probably would have given a higher rating if not for the customer service but that combine with the prices and mediocre burgers I'm only giving 2 stars. Edit in response to business manager. Went road tripping on a whim. We live in Auberry and are in Shaver often. We had not been since the change in ownership. Called ahead on our way down from Big Creek, they were busy when we arrived. Waited a few minutes, made easier by our Berry and Oreo Shakes... We all agreed that the food was actually better than before, and it was really good then.. Came here on our way back to Fresno from shaver lake. This place is very good, I got the double hamburger, tried their fries and onion rings as well. Everything was delicious. Butterfinger shake was super good! But what made me really review this place with a 5 stars was the great customer service that the cashier lady provided us, she held that place down like a champ. Even during the rush, she killed it! Very friendly. I also like that you can sit in a shed like area outside their patio. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone! read more

Came up with a friend and I'm impressed. It was empty when I came. The guy helping us was cool and he makes a mean shake. I ordered a burger with my shake and I can positively say it was one of the best burgers I've had in a while. Cooked to perfection and fries had a tasty seasoning. We had never visited Hungry Hut before despite passing it many times on our way to the lake. There ample seating including tables in the covered-yet-open beer garden, and we opted to sit along the long bar table that faces 168. This is not a regular full-service restaurant, rather there is an order window and you receive a buzzer to alert when your food is ready to pickup, and you seat yourself. This not only makes the experience much more laid-back but makes it easier when you have dogs with you. We ordered and sat for a bit and sipped our coffee. While we were waiting for our food, one of the girls came out and offered our dogs pup cups which I was totally not expecting but appreciated. The pup cups were probably about 2 or 3 times larger than what you normally get from sbux and our pups enjoyed every last bit of the delicious whipped cream. We received our food packaged to-go, in a bag which was an added convenience if we were to take our food back to the VRBO, but because it wasn't too busy just yet, we decided to stay and eat. The hot, fresh burrito was very welcome to our hungry stomachs and I would say definitely worth the $10 for the sustenance and the convenience. They also came with a little container of salsa which I think was Pace salsa (honestly my favorite of the shelf-stable supermarket varieties) and it was the perfect amount of salsa for the burritos. Overall we were pleased with the entire experience. We went back for dinner but they were very busy and we have our dogs with us so we opted out, although we very easily could have just ordered our food and taken it back. This place was recommended from a couple of people that lived here in town. They said they had some really good burgers. Wait time was long for ordering. There was no one at the front to take our order for at least 10 minutes and there was a long line behind me. You can tell they are super understaffed. They gave us a pager for our food and it buzzed three times. First time was for us to pick up our milkshake but hold on to the pager. Second buzz was for another milkshake that we didn't order then they said our food isn't ready and keep our pager again. Third buzz was for our food, finally... This took about 45 minutes for our food. The tables were extremely dirty! They for sure do not clean it. Luckily I brought disinfectant wipes. I used 4 and it was still BLACK from the dirt. The Oreo milk shake was really yummy and creamy so they get a star for that... Burgers... horrible. They were overdone and burnt. They tasted like cheap frozen patties. They give you a lot of fries but how can we eat them when they pour so much seasoning salt on them?? Service, what service? They were not friendly and the older lady there looked like she hated being there. The rest were just kids probably 18/19 years old. They were so disorganized and you can totally tell. I don't know how they have managed to run this place. When we were waiting to use the bathroom inside, we saw the two cooks making burgers and frying fries. They were not wearing any gloves and just talking and joking each other. We felt gross to our stomach after seeing that. We had gotten our stuff to go and even with a ticket and buzzer, order was coming right up and then lost. The time we waited was pretty extensive. We needed food though and options can be pretty limited. The fries could be crispier and the chicken sandwich was decent. But if you lose our stuff somehow at least make up for it. The onion rings were tasty and perfectly crispy, the burgers had great flavor including a great burger sauce. The oreo shake was also excellent. Paired with a couple of cans of 805 beer. Came here on a Thursday around 3:45-4 they said they already shut down the grill and could only sell fries and shakes. So we left. They said they only had 5 customers for the day. They would have made over $200 just from my group. Decided to go back the next day around lunch time. There were a few people before us. We ordered to go. Everything was over cooked except my burger. We were really disappointed. We paid over $65 plus a tip for non edible food. I decided to go back the next day because I always look forward to going here when we go up to Shaver. It was a million times better. It was super busy and the food tastes just like it always does. Everything was cooked perfectly. I am giving a 3 star because of the two prior incidents. I am upset that we spent so much money the second day and our food was non edible. This is unacceptable. Especially when you are spending that kind of money on two meals. Let's start by saying my family and I go here every year for our Shaver Trip. Normally, it's our go to. We like to go a couple times a trip. We love this little shack, burger joint, on the main drag of Shaver Lake Village. Service could be a little slow, at times, when empty. Yes, when empty. Seems it's faster when there are more people. Weird. This time was a huge disappointment. Ordered the chicken sandwich, French fries, onion rings and Butterfinger Malt Shake. The chicken was soo over done and dry, four ketchup packets couldn't help it or my mouth. The fries are the same as Doghouse (Fresno), Firestone (SLO) and Main Street Grill (Cambria). The only problem is most were so over done and crispy chips. The onion rings were straight burnt and onion inside was dehydrated from the burn. The Butterfinger Malt Shake was great as always. Smooth, creamy, shake, with chunks of Butterfinger turned in. I know they are better than this because my family went after I did (almost 2 hrs later) and the food was done right. Waited at least 45 minutes during a non meal rush hour for our food. Kids grilled cheese wasn't melted. Skimped on burger toppings. Cheese wasn't melted on burgers. Burgers tasted like fake soy infused garbage. Fries were not hot and were cold and stale half way through eating them. Soda tasted like hard water. Paid for a a five dollar large soda that they wouldn't refill. Order came out to $60+ for two burgers fries onion rings and one large soda. I understand capitalism, but his is just a ripoff. I guess there is no shame in the game. Oh wait..they did give us ranch for the onion rings without charging us .75 each so I guess that makes it all better. The owner has a bad attitude and bad mouthes customers in front of other customers and employees. The owner will probably come one here and retaliate and either lie or make excuses.
