Had a reservation for 6:30 on Tuesday was seated promptly. We were visiting from out of town and looking for a great dinner. Waitress came and took our drink order brought back mine spilled some and immediately said they overfilled it. Ordered appetizers got the combination appetizers while the potato skins and calamari were good the mushrooms were not...we ate them because we do not like to waste food. Salads came out just the regular skimpy Cesar salad nothing spectacular. Food came out. While the steaks were good the mashed potatoes were flavorless and the veggies were way overcooked. The chipotle Mac n cheese was burnt to the point the noodles on top were crunchy. Our glasses sat empty for a long time. With what we paid for that dinner it was a big disappointment. I ordered a Thanksgiving meal from them and it was dreadful. The stuffing was mush, the potatoes were lumpy, and the turkey was dry and lacked flavor. The Ceaser salad was iceberg lettuce with a few croutons and some disappointing dressing. Denny's would have been MUCH better at a quarter of the cost. Walked in and was directed to a basement bar / diner place. Appetizer starter tasted well, perhaps I was hungry.... I ordered the prime rib and my girlfriend ordered the lobster. The sides I got was onion rings and clam chowder. The clam chowder was watered down and had a lime taste to it. I took two spoonful and put it on the side..... oh yeah the bread wasn't even fully baked. You can still see it in dough form. The food came out and the meat tasted like they went to the dumpster, microwaved it and then served it. The appetizer Gouda fritters, Ceasars salad, onion rings and bread were terrific...disappointed in the quality of my filet mignon and my wife's NY steak..grizzly and very chewy..cooked to order and very flavorful..just yucky quite meet..first time here..over priced for the quality. The waitress, Echo, was TERRIFIC..Great service. Fast, efficient , helpful and friendly. HOWEVER..the 2 hostess greeters were very strange..one tall caucasian, thin girl (punk type and strange personality) the other young African American ..confused and couldn't find reservation, struggled, commotion, found it..both totally curt and unfriendly..seated us initially upstairs, right next to the staircase.. no one else upstairs ..when next party came they were seated right next to us in this totally empty upstairs room . Thought that was weird..could have spread us out in this giant empty room. We went there on New Year's Day hoping to have a nice meal to start the new year. We ordered two prime ribs, a Cajun lamb appetizer. We were there before 6pm and the restaurant was not busy yet. The prime ribs came out like they have been sitting out for a while, they were not even warm when they should be hot. The Cajun lamb was over cooked and burnt. When I ordered the prime ribs, our server asked me what side dish I wanted. She told me choice of side salad, pea soup or clam chowder. I asked her if they were included and she said yes. So I choose the clam chowder. When the bill came out there was a $1.00 extra for the clam chowder. When I questioned our server, she said it's included. Then she said it's included with a $1.00 extra for the soup. I don't mind paying $1.00 more but she should have made it clear when I ordered instead of saying it's included. I used to like this restaurant but there are better restaurants in the area that I will patronize instead. read more

This place is Nothing like the photos!! Beware!!! Our Grandfather was eager to return here after several years away. Unfortunately the restaurant is run down, the hostess seating area has peeling 2nd hand furniture ! Peeling fake leather couches in the entry way speaks out your entire dinner experience! We were seated next to the fire place which was nice because the rest of the restaurant look dark to cover the peeling old dinning area furniture. They provide 3 dinner rolls after you place your order; one for each guest. Waitress intentionally disappears to avoid refills. We ordered the prime rib with mashed potatoes. The potatoes were cold and they do Not offer or have Any Gravy; they're Dry and Salty! The prime rib is tough and the supposed complementary veggies are made up of Peeled Carrots and soggy zucchini! The cheapest veggies you can buy; and your still skimped on portion. Dinner was just awful! Also the following day my Grampa complained of severe stomach pains he figured it was the horseradish or their prime rib. After 3 days of pain he was rushed to ICU at Tri City Hospital! **Please shut down and make room for a decent restaurant!! read more

I have been going to The Hunter for years, in fact, I started going in the 70's. I've always enjoyed it and the last 5 years have only gone for lunch and ate in the bar. Since COVID they no longer have a bartender during lunch which makes it hard to get the service you would like to have. I remember before COVID the bar would be full and the service for food and drink was much better than it is now. Please bring it back to the way it used to be. read more

We have eaten many times at Hunter Steak House and have always enjoyed it. This time there were a few issues. It started well with an appetizer sampler of stuffed mushrooms, potato skins and calamari. All were tasty. We both had the "wheel" salad which was very good. I ordered a small filet mignon. It came with a baked potato and mixed vegetables. The steak was over cooked. I ordered medium, but it was closer to well done. Also, it was an odd cut. Didn't look like a filet. It was a round ball of meat with a flap on it. My husband ordered prime rib which he enjoyed. He asked the waitress for additional sour cream for his baked potato. but she never brought it. We ordered mud pie for dessert. The waitress plopped the check down on the table before she brought the dessert, which seemed odd. We will probably return but next time we'll eat in the bar. The service is better and they have early bird dining which is a better value. read more

The staff is amazing but I feel like they are now lowballing the cuts of beef; my Prime Rib was tough and not well cooked (Asked for rare, got medium at best); wife's sirloin was sub par. Steamed veggies on the side were overcooked; while tasty, both types of soup were a tad watery (chowder and tomato) Beer choices seem to be right out of a 1970's playbook, no mirco/locals just Bud and a few other equally mass produced IPA/Pilsners. Nothing even as heady as a port. Featured wine? Clois du Bois, which we should have taken as a red flag and walked out right there. This makes me sad as I loved the place when I was younger, but its taken a turn for the worse. Staff is still superb though. read more

Ever been to a restaurant that you think should be on Restaurant Impossible? I think Hunter needs something like this in order to stay relevant. The restaurant is stuck. It looks the same as when I first arrived in Oceanside. That was in 1999. My server Jeanine was great. She moved through our four course meal quickly and was very attentive. Unfortunately the food was less than stellar. The good: Our server was on point she was quick, kept drinks filled and moved the courses along at a good rate. The tomato zucchini soup was very good. Steamed vegetables were also good. Carrot cake was good. The Meh: The prime rib was just ok. Which is weird as we love prime rib and we're excited to crush this one. It was just meh. Chocolate cake was really cold and hard. Tasted ok. But was over chilled. The bad: the loaf of bread we received was cold in the middle. Which lead me to believe it was thawed at some point. At the price point this place has the bread can't be frozen and reheated. I may have gotten a weird piece of bread but I'm pretty sure that was the case. the Ugly: once again I find myself at another steak house for my bi-annual steak and I can not for the life of me get a medium steak. I just returned it and refused a new one. I added a picture which shows my piece of jerky. So my conclusion: the place had a lot of seniors eating here. It is probably fine for people who want the same old same old. It's sizzler quality food at a higher price. I can't recommend this place currently. It's past it's prime and in need of a facelift. The food was mediocre and I expected much more from the steak house that in the past was the top steak house in the area. Hopefully one day it will rise again. I had to work over Thanksgiving my husband and I missed out on Thanksgiving dinner. He'd been wanting prime rib but no time to cook it. I started researching buying prime ribs online and found Hunter Steakhouse where one could order a prime dinner for takeout. That sounded perfect! They advertised their prime rib as the best in town. But saying that doesn't make it so. I ordered the Hunter Cut Prime Rib Dinner, advertised as: "A lb. and a quarter, served with a bone. Served with our unique creamed horseradish sauce and au jus". It came with sides and I chose a baked potato and the tomato zucchini soup. First of all, the prime rib was okay but no horseradish sauce or au jus was included and it really needed it. I expected a nice big fluffy big potato but got what I thought it was a mediocre barely cooked one. They included some vegetables but they were tasteless. The tomato zucchini soup however was very good. All in all, I'm not impressed but rather disappointed. The staff I thought was really good though, friendly and efficient. Ambiance - 0/5 I remember going to Hungry Hunter for my 16th birthday 38 years ago ...with personalized matchbooks on the table, a definite need for reservations and dressing for a high end restaurant. Today, with the same tables and chairs, the same paint and art work on the walls and the same carpet on the floors, it's a run down mess. No need for reservations, even on a Friday/Saturday night because it's an embarrassing place to bring a date. Service (front and back) - 0/5 I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the service was bad because it's not a place high end servers want to work because the restaurant is never crowded. Our server was a young girl with no finesse what so ever. She did a basic job of serving our table. We were never checked on after our meals were brought to our table...as a matter of fact, the server who did bring the food (a different younger girl), practically threw the plates at us and ran. Condiments were missing so we waited (while the food got cold) to ask for them...practically shouting across the room just to get the servers attention. When I made the reservation I mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday...I had to remind the server. When she brought out the complementary cake, she forgot to bring forks and never bothered to ask if we wanted coffee or if we'd like to order more desserts. Also, when I made the reservation, I was asked if we were able to climb stairs...I said no, there were people in our party who could not climb stairs. THEY SAT US UPSTAIRS! Food - 5/5 I ordered the filet, baked potato and table side salad. Everything on the salad tray was fresh and the the thousand island dressing was delicious. The potato was soft and served hot with butter and sour cream (I declined the chives). The filet was the perfect temperature...medium rare, and very good quality. The flour-less chocolate cake (once I stole forks off the neighboring table), was very good with a coffee flavored topping. The prices, based on ambiance and service, are much too high for this restaurant. It's the closest place to home to get a quality steak, so I will go back...with much lower expectations. read more

Management needs to do something with their not functioning fountain on their 2nd floor. Its an eye sore and not appetizing when you are eating with that kind of ambiance. Hunters Steakhouse caters and does also host vendor booths. I had the opportunity to try the tri-tip Caesar salad. The meat had good flavor and was tender wish there was more of it on my salad. The only positive to the evening was the service as our server was very sweet and wanted to ensure we had an amazing experience. She needs to find a new restaurant that aligns the food quality with her care for the guest experience. Steak tastes freezer burnt, vegetables had been frozen and clam chowder tasted like dirty dish water. The restaurant could redeem itself by putting a focus on food quality and if not adjusting prices to align with their lack of food quality.
