My fur-baby was with us, so we went straight to the patio and nabbed a table in a quiet, shaded area. Fernando was our server. He was very pleasant, friendly and attentive the whole time we were there. This is definitely a comfort food kind of place, and the portions are big. I'm glad I looked at the menu online the day before, because the menu is extensive, has a lot of heavier meals that I normally don't eat, and I could take my time finding the right meal. We ordered from the Lunch & Dinner Menu. My friend ordered from the Senior Meals section: corn chowder soup and Meatloaf with Gravy. I ordered from the Burgers section: a Veggie Burger and a side of sweet potato fries. The Veggie Burger comes with lettuce, avocado, tomato, onion and mayo on the side, which allowed me to build my Veggie Burger exactly the way I want it. My friend loved his meal, and I loved mine. I don't know what type of bread was used for my Veggie Burger's bun but it was delicious and seemed freshly baked. I'll be back!

BROCCOLI. and after taking one bite, i learned that broccoli could, in fact, be life changing. suddenly i was a new woman. a woman who wanted nothing more than to sit there and stuff her face with massive amounts of broccoli. unfortunately, i couldn't because we still had dishes to taste. and so i moved on to the pork belly. when people describe something as "melting in your mouth," they are specifically referring to Campfire's pork belly. because that's exactly what it did. just melted all up in my mouth and lit my taste buds on fire. normally, i find pork belly prepared this way a little heavy and can only stomach a few bites, but i could have eaten the entire dish. but of course i didn't, because i'm a lady. and the octopus was about to show up. and show up it DID. i don't like celery, and this dish had plenty of it, but because it was shaved super thin, it was actually super palatable. the octopus was incredibly tender, and there were little bits of chorizo throughout that gave it the perfect balance. also, love me a good chimichurri sauce. and finally, last but truly not least, the chicken. a whole ass half bird, charred to perfection with roasted red pepper, kumquat, and fennel. apparently i like fennel now??? i didn't even know i liked fennel like that, but here we are. if i hadn't already been stuffed to the absolute brim, i could have destroyed this entire dish. the chicken was juicy and tender, and paired with the fennel, you're almost like just having a healthy dish??? LOL. although we went in with every intention of ending the night with s'mores, our bodies simply said no. there was no more room at the inn. see what i did there :P so instead, we left and went on a very long walk to digest all the delicious goodness that was Campfire. i cannot wait to go back. mostly for the broccoli, which is a sentence i never thought i'd write in my life. and this time, i will absolutely be making a reservation.

I also haven't found the cocktails especially impressive in recent years. Campfire helped bring craft cocktails to Carlsbad, and my husband and I still reminisce about drinks like the roasted beet and charred corn. Unfortunately, the current cocktail menu hasn't made the same impression. Campfire is worth trying if you've never been, but as a local, it's no longer a restaurant I look forward to visiting regularly. These days, I'd probably go about once a year.

I had the salmon BLT which had a yogurt dill sauce (not the best salmon BLT, but it was good enough to finish my plate). Fries were fantastic. We also got the BBQ chicken flatbread which had an appropriate SoCal twist with fresh avocado cubes as the topper. Ceviche appetizer was small but tasty. All in all - the scenery would bring me back, and the food lives up to bar food expectations.

Last month was my birthday, and I took my family to Hunter Steakhouse for the first time. Three of us ordered steak and my youngest daughter ordered from the kids menu. My prime rib (Hunter Cut) was absolutely horrible - at first it was extremely rare with blood all over and could not even be cut, and after I requested it be re-cooked, there was no flavor at all - it was as if one was served a washed with water steak. I ended up taking it home, after which my wife marinated it was was able to salvage the steak. My wife's steak - the top sirloin, was very dry and hard. Only my older daughter, who ordered the Steak Neil ended up liking hers, and I admit that one was good. The service was not that good either - the bread was served but there were no utensils. Then came the salad, but still no utensils. We had to flag the waitress who causally glanced at our table and then brought the utensils with nary a word of apology. I ordered some coffee, but there was no attempt by the waitress to ask whether I needed a refill, and thus, the beckoning again for that. We found after we got the bill that one of our items was not served (crab-stuffed mushrooms) and only when we mentioned it did our waitress find out that it was prepared but apparently on some high shelf in the kitchen and so went unnoticed. At least she was kind enough to knock off the item from our bill. By the way, when I had reserved the table online, I had mentioned in the notes area that it was my birthday, and yet even though the waiters sang a happy birthday song to another group in a nearby table, once again, nary a word was mentioned regarding mine. I am generally not in the habit of writing poor reviews, but in case anyone reads this, perhaps they at least may be aware of some customers paying over $100 and getting probably $20 worth of satisfaction. I still paid the waitress a 20% tip, as it is not in my nature to bear ill-will to a server. read more

We went to Hunter Steakhouse in Oceanside last week, not impressed...we sat at the bar downstairs as we were there at 3 pm. kinda early for upstairs dining. There were several couples at the tables and two women at the bar. We sat down at the bar...which is when we should have gotten up and left. There was a SWARM of small bugs circling above the ice bin, and by swarm I mean like 50-75 of the little buggers...Ive seen them at other bars a few here or there but this was 1 big swarm. we sat down at the far end of the bar. After ordering and getting a drink we talked and looked around...another instance we had to escape while we could. The vent right above our are had long tendrils of dust and filth dangling out of the louvers...hanging down like xmas ornaments of disgusting filth ready to celebrate some good times as they swayed back and forth in the breeze. Averting my vision before we eat I look down and see a hole in the wall that also looked old and has dirt and filth extruding from and around the opening. That was when the bun headed manager came thru looking important, but waving his hands as he passed thru the swarm of bugs and proceeding without so much as a word about cleaning it up or working on getting the bug problem under control...like sign language to pair with his deaf ears and blind eyes. We discussed how disappointing it was that this place would probably close soon, and the staff and management obviously don't care about cleanliness and or quality product or service. Sorry Hunter, that was really gross, and this coming from a dive bar enthusiast. Used to be in top 5...you are now on the "no Go" list. clean up your act or your done...no ones gonna eat in that atmosphere. Me your longtime customer. read more

I'm honestly shocked anyone has left more than a two start review. The food is reheated frozen mush which is bland and over priced. The service is a joke. We went for my husbands birthday and told them ahead of time during making the reservation. No one said anything to him about it until I pointed it out again at the end. The surly old waitress threw a piece of cake on the table and brought us the check not even asking if we wanted to look at the dessert options. She then stated she wasn't going to sing or bring him a candle because she didn't feel like it!! Wtf!? First of all no body asked her to sing or expected it, but a candle would have been nice, or maybe a server without an attitude The decor is outdated and warn out, and the out door seating looks like a tented garage sale. It's clear the ownership and management take no pride in this restaurant. It should be on a Gordon Ramsey show or something because this place is that bad. My dad was in town and had been wanting a good steak so we decided Hunters would be a worth a try. I had been to the Hunters in Laguna Niguel but never this one, which I guess is the original. It's in an old, dreary building and walking in you feel like you're walking into the dining room at a retirement home. We sat down and ordered drinks which came out quickly. Luckily it was happy hour prices because my martini was missing a good inch off the top and my husband's vodka/cran was all ice. My dad ordered a bacon wrapped steak, my husband ordered a filet and I ordered the salmon. My husband's steak was somewhat edible and extremely thin, while my dad's was something I wouldn't feed to my dog. The salmon was decent but I spent the rest of the night sick to my stomach. Maybe it's just this location because I've been to their Laguna restaurant a handful of times and it was always good...updated decor, the steak was what you'd expect for the price, better service and it never made me vomit. As my German friends say "Nein, nein, nein!" Er, that is to say, "no f-ing way." I knew better than to trust that these folks could pull anything together apart from Prime Rib. So I asked for the rarest piece they could arrange. They brought me an end cap (by definition well-done) which appeared to be fully crusted with pure rock salt (I know there is a prep technique for that, but they typically strike it off, right?) I sent that back and tried to make clear: "red, roja, rosa, blut, bloody, sangre..." and guess what? They brought au jus with the EXACT SAME end-cap that could have been used for a salty boot tread. All told, I was made to wait about 15 minutes between each waitstaff interaction, and I was not even plied with alcohol during the wait. That would have made it less conspicuous how they were blowing off the entire party, but they dropped that ball too. Keep rolling if meats plus solid service is your goal. read more

I've been going there for years off and on for lunch. My family and I went there for dinner to celebrate my 80th birthday. I like the ambiance. It's comfortable. The service was very good. Overall, the food was very ordinary. I had the 2 pound ribeye tomahawk steak with two lobster tails. The steak alone was $100. It was very disappointing. Tough and very little taste. The two lobster tails were basically cold. The clam chowder and Caesar salad were both very good. My brother had a large ribeye steak. Almost half of it wasn't edible. Our wives had the prime rib. It was quite good. We had carrot cake for dessert. It was cold and dry. The bottom line is that for $500 including the tip we expected better. None of us had any alcoholic drinks. Needless to say we probably won't be going back again for dinner. My guests and not the food made my night. I wish things had turned out better. BTW the shrimp cocktail is great! read more

Are you into spending $30+ per plate for suspiciously sweet mashed potatoes, bread, and butter? Do you like having ice/water served to you from literally out of a garbage can? If so, Hunter's is the restaurant for you! We sat in back by a server station and they literally were pulling ice and water out of a garbage can (pictures to prove if needed). I love happy hours on weekends and they are hard to find. Now about that happy hour: drafts are $5, which is a rocking deal, and all appetizers/starters are $10, which is also a very good deal. We ordered the Brisket Nachos, which are usually $24, and you get an absolutely mountain of them for $10. Now, $24 is waaaaay too high for this dish. The chips are excellent but the toppings are skimpy. I would pay $15 to $18 or so, outside of happy hour, probably. But at $10, this appetizer is a steal. They also offer beer flights (you pick four beers) and three of my four beers were very good. Although I generally prefer darker beers, curiously, I liked the lighter ones better. Everyone gets these cute little complimentary corn muffins when you sit down. The muffins ate just average but the cinnamon butter that comes with the muffins is outrageously good. The music on the sound system was all 80s, which was interesting, and I am not complaining. They also have a good-sized parking lot, which is always a bonus. Our server was great. She was very friendly and attentive. I would definitely return for the happy hour and would probably return to try their BBQ. San Diego (County) needs more BBQ places and the good BBQ places here need our support.

No matter how kind or accommodating the employees were, nothing appeared to be good enough. The staff handled the situation professionally and with much more patience than many people would have. It's a reminder that while most customers are appreciative, there are a few who seem intent on spreading negativity. Thankfully, one difficult person doesn't reflect the quality of the restaurant or the dedication of the people who work there.

It is extremely fresh and not overpowered by acidity, fishy smells or rubbery shrimp. The ceviche here is legit. Great. AND ONLY $10 (for cameron). If you order anything here, get the ceviche first. I'm anxious to try their aguachile now. We also ordered the fajitas ("suprema" with chicken, steak and shrimp). Fajitas did not come out sizzling at all. I have never seen this before. Also, there were only two shrimp. The steak/carne was bland and dry. Not great. Wife ordered the Sopes (3) and mother ordered the Enchiladas Cameron. The sopes were okay, but a bit bland. Wife had to salt everything on the plate. The enchiladas had a sauce my mom said was too sweet. She wasn't a fan. For all three dishes to be a miss is completely strange considering the sheer number of 5-star reviews. I want to believe. We must have come on an off-day, but the place was busy. Quite a few larger parties were here, so this place is popular with the natives. We also grabbed a Model and a Corona. Only $5 for the beers! Total for everything came to $117.64 (with tip).
