While it isn't the *best* Vietnamese food I've ever had, but a solid spot with good service. This spot will definitely satiate a craving. We got spring rolls and chicken wings to start, and the spring rolls were forgettable, and were falling apart as we ate them. However, the wings were delicious and served piping hot. Our group ordered pho & the vermicelli bowl (pictured). The broth of the pho was super delicious, with a lot of depth to the flavor. The vermicelli bowl's quantity was a little smaller than expected, but still very delicious. Their fish sauce "sauce" for the vermicelli bowl was a little sweeter than I've had before, but still so delicious. The pork was marinated perfectly & the egg rolls were delectable, too. This restaurant is a staple for my family. They have all our Vietnamese favorites, the portions are good and the food always fresh and light. They shut down their restaurant during the pandemic, but it looks like their dining room is open now. Tip: If you want to get take out for Friday or Saturday nights, call your order in early. They are usually so busy taking, filling and checking out orders, they don't pick up the phone. I've also had trouble getting through, getting busy signals or disconnect messages. Just need to keep trying. Our favorites here: #40 - Bun with THE yummiest BBQ pork, shrimp and egg roll. Gotta try the cubed beef and rice. The beef is always tender and well marinated. Fresh rolls have all the things you want for an authentic roll - vermicelli, pork, shrimp and mint! This was order through doordash and for me huong tra could have been better. I ordered some takeout for my roomie and myself and the food was average. We got the bun bo hue, which I love in general, combo pho medium and some grilled pork spring rolls. Bun Bo Hue: 3.5/5 it needs to be spicier, and I don't mean sriracha. It was missing that spicy lemongrass broth that I LOVE from pho king near lake Merritt. It had more fish sauce flavor than spicy beef/pork lemongrass flavor. Additionally, I'm use to cabbage with it and the rau ram. It did have the rau ram but not cabbage, instead it had bean sprout. Not a deal breaker but cabbage just gives a crunchiness that bean sprout can't. Pho: 4/5 Strong beef broth, good cut of beef. Best thing from the takeout, would get it again. Pork Spring Roll: 2/5, way too oily. The pork was too warm that it melted the herbs, lettuce and rice paper. Maybe it would have been better eat in the restaurant but it was half soggy and half oily. There is fried nibble in it that I like in pork spring roll but all I tasted was old oil. Price-wise, it was not too bad (not including delivery from DD), but Berkeley does have a lot of vietnamese places and I have just had better. read more

Ok so why they don't have a option for 6 stars yet idk!! This spot is one of the BEST Vietnamese restaurants I've been to in the Bay!! I'm from SF so it's hard to find a Vietnamese spot that meets my happy place. So for the past year I have been ordering their Tony's Special plate that my brother put my cousins and I on to. Is when I tell you Up until yesterday I had only ordered the Tony special ( grilled beef, shrimp, over yellow rice, & a fried egg on top) to go because of the shut down and not being able to eat dine in. No one else in the Bay makes a Tony Special. I wish I knew who Tony was so that I can thank him because it is EXACTLY what it's called, "SPECIAL" So yesterday my guy asked me to pick up and order for him but on the way there I was starving. I get there and realize that dine in was back and that they serve Pho!! Pho is one of my all time favorite dishes, I probably have an addiction at this point I eat pho every week lol As I'm walking up to pick up my order I glance over and notice that there are so many ppl inside eating pho (chop sticks and spoons were moving fast lol) I sit down order a chicken pho with egg noodle & of course I added broccoli (my happy meal) There couldn't have been any other place the big guy in the sky could have ever guided me to! I fell in love!! This place couldn't be duplicated if it was ever attempted I promise you. I enjoy their welcoming staff and the fact the place is spotless. The women at the front are always so friendly, I wish I asked for the name of the server she was so sweet and the service is always so fast. They are so efficient and check on you to make sure your time there is enjoyable. I recommend to everyone in the world if you are ever in the bay and want the best pho or Vietnamese dish come to this place. Huong Tra is a district in North Central Coast of Vietnam, so their cuisine specializes in that region. OK, that was an assumptions since I googled "Huong Tra" and this is what came up. This particular location is in Richmond, just north of Berkeley in the north central part of the Bay Area so the similarities are so uncanny. Coincidence? OK, I'm reaching. I'm slowly venturing in this part of the Bay and this particular restaurant looked promising. We came here on a Saturday one weekend and the place is packed, which is often a good sign. However, even though they were busy, we quickly got seated, ordered and our food arrived at our table within 15 minutes of stepping foot inside. We aslo noticed that there seems to be a lot of regulars here based on the interaction some of the patrons had with the staff. Some where also very intimate interactions, which made us jealous and the song by Black Eyed Peas popped up in my head....where is the love? All kidding aside, we love that our food got on our table so rapidly as we where hungry. Wifey ordered the Combo Pho while I got the Cubed Steak with Yellow Rice and added an Egg (extra cost). We also had Egg Roll and Fish Cakes for appetizers. Appetizers were good (not great) and my order tasted similar to Tocino. It was definitely on the sweet side and thank goodness I ordered the egg to cut the sweetness from the meat. Wifey's pho was also solid and the broth was hearty. The prices were good and the servings were well proportioned. Fast service and I guess we have to frequent it a lot to get more intimate service. All in all, a solid 3 1/2 stars. read more

Loved this place. I understand why on a weeknight it was packed. Spring rolls were delicious had three shrimp for a roll and yummy sauce. Catfish hot pot was super tasty. they make one of the best Vietnamese pancakes with seafood that I've ever had. And I've had a lot. Since we don't live in the area but we were there visiting for two nights we spent both dinners there. That's saying a lot. And we will drive back from San Francisco to do it again! read more

Yum!! My coworkers and I love this place because their food is consistently good! We called in an order, and was told the food would be ready for pick up within 15-20 minutes. We arrived within that timeframe and found the food was packaged and ready to go. They recently have opened their dining room for sit in, after being closed during the pandemic. The service is friendly and the food is tasty. I ordered their cubes steak with garlic rice and it was fantastic. The steak is very tender and in a slightly sweet sauce served with garlic rice. If you're looking for a good pho spot!!!. Usually it isn't that crowded, so you will be seated immediately. They will have your order ready almost as soon as you place it. But if pho isn't your think and a bun Bo hue is your jam the Wait is long but but it is delicious. Price plates are great you can ask Auntie the lady who works there. What's a good choice. She hasn't let me down yet haha. As for the banh Mi at this restaurant it's fairly priced and about average. Why would you go to a pho spot for a sando??? I digress, I normally just get the combination pho bowl. Portions are just right. Well balanced in meat to noodle. I'm a frequent customer and i really enjoy this spot. Being a San Francisco kind of guy, when I've said I'm going out exploring the Inner Richmond, I meant I'm not going past Park Presidio to eat. But in this part of the Bay Area, I think this is like the other Inner Richmond, hanging out at a strip mall on San Pablo Avenue that looks like every other strip mall and eating at a rather generic-looking Vietnamese spot. In fact, this Inner Richmond has a place called Fix Our Ferals right across the street from this restaurant, and I don't believe it's a Trump hotel. Just a guess. As you may know, I'm always on the lookout for a good Hainan-style chicken dish, and the closest I could find on their menu was the $9.50 Com Ga Xao Gung (Ginger Chicken over Garlic Rice). The poultry came in perfectly identical pieces (which made me think it came out of a frozen bag...just a guess) stir-fried with sprouts, onions, and some kind of brown sauce. It was accompanied by a scoop of rice that was the most intense shade of yellow (photo: http://bit.ly/2N40ExZ). I wasn't sure why or where the garlic was, but it tasted better than it looked. Sorta. Of course, I conducted my litmus test for all Vietnamese restaurants. I ordered the $3.75 Goi Cuon Chay, the vegetarian version of their summer rolls with tofu and salad replacing shrimp and pork wrapped in rice paper and accompanied by a thick peanut sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/2wWORXV). This our go-to Vietnamese place - so good and such great value! Our favorite dishes are the Combination Pho, Bun Bo Hue, Spring rolls with pork and shrimp, Squid salad, and my boyfriend also loves their cubed beef over rice dish. Short anecdote - we're not sure what his name is but this guy has the best customer service. We haven't dined-in in months, but when we were dining in, he was the best. When we ordered a coconut, he said he'd pick us a really good and sweet one - AND IT WAS SO SWEET AND FRESH! Also, when our friend first wanted to order the beef over rice dish, he recommended the cubed beef one instead - and that also was such a good rec - like I said, it's my boyfriend's top dishes there now! Driving home from Marin County, wanted some Viet grub, checked out places on Yelp, and this one got four stars, 4.5 on Google. Not too far into scarytown, and an El Cerrito homey from way back, so stopped in, and glad I did! Place was crowded a bit after lunch time, which was a good sign. Told to grab any table by pleasant host, sat down, and was immediatley greeted with a menu by server. Short scan of menu, and server was back for order! Got the goi coun rolls and a bowl of pho (dac biet). The three rolls were presented with a nice peanut sauce, and the pho was one of the best I have had in a long time. Broth was clear and fragrant, and bowl was loaded with all the usual stuff. My only gripe, no tripe!!! Didn't want to make a fuss, so didn''t concern myself with it. I've been dining at Bay Area Vietnamese restaurants for a long time, and most are okay, but not memorable. Huong Tra is solid, and certainly a cut above. Extensive menu and prices to die for!!! The review is based on their fresh spring rolls. It had pork in it but that's not what I didn't like about it. It was the overall flavor and peanut sauce usually helps but in this case, it didn't. I ate one and that was enough for me. Their chicken banh mi, though, was excellent! I ordered the following: Shrimp & chicken summer rolls - these were small, the wrap was mushy tasting, lacking in flavor, and I tasted more iceberg lettuce than vermicelli. Pork banh mi - the flavor & spices inside the sandwich was good, but the bread tasted as hard as a rock and I nearly chipped a tooth biting into it Even my local Lee's which is fast food can serve fresh bread for banh mi. I was pretty excited to try this place out while working in Richmond for a few days. Reviews and the pictures on Yelp were promising so me and a few coworkers went to go try them out. Unfortunately it fell flat. A classic case of "eating with your eyes." I ordered Summer rolls, Garlic Fried Chicken wings, a Beef Bahn mi and a Thai iced tea. Just about everything was just okay. The wings weren't crispy and far from being garlic, the beef in the Bahn mi was not tender and the summer rolls were premade (which I know they usually are in most places) but to have the wrapper be ripped open was disappointing. Flavor was okay altogether and service was very quick but all the other things that would've made this place good were not up to par. read more

The food is truly authentic. But the service doesn't reach the standard. I order three items to go, none of them were correct for what it supposed to come with. The combination pho is supposed to have basil/sprouts/jalapeño peppers pack add on, they forgot every time! The rice plate I asked for yellow rice it came out white. The beef salad without sauce. We got #16 (beef & brisket pho) and #50 (pork chop rice plate). The plate was listed $11.95 on the menu, but we were charged $14.50. Pho was $9.50 on the menu, but we were charged $10.50. UPDATE (6-MAY-2002): Ordered Summer rolls, #2, supposedly with pork and shrimp, but they were really just noodles and some lettuce. Very disappointing. This used to be one of my favorite places for Vietnamese. There were 1.5 shrimp in the form of three shrimp cut in half with three halfs in each roll. Then there was a small dab of pork. See the pictures to illustrate my disappointment. I don't know if this was just a bad batch (which is really no excuse) or if they are just tying to maximize profits during the Covid situation. Oh, I love this restaurant but just curious because they changed the billing system... I went there for lunchtime and the menu is different and thought it is a lunch menu. I think the price is cheaper than the dinner menu(or I thought...), after we ate, and the server brought a pay-at-the-table device, add the tip, and done! It was easy but when I thought what I was ordered didn't add up to the amount I paid... I am still wondering if they already adding the service fee and get another tip??? Just thinking... Listen, the food is incredible. Great portion size, amazing flavor, and consistent! There are a few things on the menu that aren't as great, but it's a huge menu so that's not all that surprising. You can't go wrong with the standard fare. I think if you dip into the more Chinese style dishes, you're straying from what's solid. All that being said, get takeout. Call in your order if possible (which can be impossible during their dinner rush), or just go order in person and wait. The sit down service is not very good. It's often just okay, but hardly great, and the restaurant's ambiance is also just okay. I live close by and get takeout here all the time, and if I ever moved away this would be a place I would really miss! read more

I saw it on the menu here and decided to give it a go. While doing that, however, I decided I wanted to try a banh mi. I had had a few in the past but wasn't crazy about them. Anyway, I'm the midst of being sick and hungry I added a bbq beef banh mi (#8) to my order. HO. LEE. GAWD!! From the first bite.....I'm salivating just thinking about it. It was euphoric, I shit you not. The meat was PERFECTLY cooked, tender and super juicy. The bread was crispy on the outside and warm and chewy once you bite. And the perfect balance of the fresh cucumber and carrots. Yo, I could cry right now. I was planning on having my soup for dinner because I just knew I wasn't gonna really be feelin the sandwich but bump that. I tore that thing down, sore throat and all. It was too yummy. I will be going back to get another one REAL soon. Whew. Today I ate my chicken pho and it was really good. The chicken was a little dry, but given it was in a soup, I managed. Everything else about it was great. It was what I needed since my throat is still sore and I was feeling down. Do yourself a favor and just come here and get something. Let me start off by saying that I haven't really explored the menu too much here, I always get the same thing, cube steak with yellow rice and an egg on top. Let me just say that it's absolutely delicious. I always crave it and it's definitely my go to cheat meal from my diet. The steak is extremely flavorful a little on the sweet side but still amazing. It's super tender and basically melts in your mouth. The rice is delicious slightly oily but still amazing.
