They went from a nice, fine dining experience to order at the window we will bring it to your table, and they cut down on the quality of the food big-time but the prices remained the same. We are very disappointed in the lack of taste in our food especially at the prices we paid. My husband got a lobster roll. What has traditionally been our go-to place for seafood and friendly service for over 20 years has transformed into a self-serve, mediocre restaurant. Gone are the elderly locals who made this spot unique and satisfying. Clam cakes were virtually devoid of clams, but on a positive note the onion rings were heavenly. Haddock sandwich was over cooked and greasy. We'll try one more time on this year's vacation but doubt we'll return next. Sad to see this institution decline. read more

Went last Friday to Huots with friend ,my wife and daughter. Drinks were great by bartender Bernie. Apps were great , Chowder and clam cakes on point. As usual, I got clams and there were great. We have been to Huot's many times over the years, going when we make the trip up to visit family. This was the first time since they made the change from traditional dining to Window Ordering in 2019. The food quality has dropped precipitously. Portions as well. And the pricing was not proportional to both or "market prices". We were utterly disappointed in the baked sea scallops which were cold and had barely broken up Ritz crackers on top. Substitution of coleslaw for another side wasn't allowed. And prices were out of control - over $30 for 8 small MICROWAVED scallops. $3.50 for water or soda, $4.50 for a Gatorade. The best item was a hot dog for $5.50! That's not what Huot's was! A once great institution reduced to a shell of its former self - name only. Everything good has been stripped from it. Went back to Huots last night to get their clam cakes, which I have always bought all summer. Well the price went up to $4.00 since I was there 2 weeks ago. They were horrible!! They looked like pancakes and were all filler. So dense and barely any flavor. They certainly are not using the original recipes. This was a Friday evening, the parking lot was not even half full and 2 people eating inside. It looks as thou they are catering to the drinking crowd and not their loyal diners . Very fresh seafood-the baked haddock and scallops are always a win! Other fabulous choices are the handmade clam cakes and their delicious fish or clam chowder. Had to be one of the worst lobster roll all three of us agreed. Although the lobster was plentiful, it was tasteless and dry, with just a large piece of lettuce. There are many other places in southern Maine whose lobster rolls are much much better than Huot's. My life-long companion and I entered the establishment on a chilled, late May afternoon. We had been seeking out the fine dining for quite some time as we had it marked on our calendar. We were given the option to sit with the interior, yet we chose to sit on the outside. The service among the bar was very welcoming, yet was surprised when I had noticed the chokehold my debit card had been put in after closing the tab. My father-in-law owns a boat at the nearby marina, so we're always tempted to grab food to eat on the boat ride. We usually pass now. This was a very sad experience. My family is in town from California . They had never tried a Clam Cake ( So I was like heck ya ,let's go to Huot's ! We ordered 3 clamcake dinners. Yhey all had the same complaints. So I tried them ,They were not wrong. They were all the same. Clamcake shaped balls of dough, no flavor at all. Then we broke all 6 of them in pieces. End of an era, sadly. I rarely resort to negative reviews online but, given the way this evening went, I feel inclined to share our experience in the event that it may save others from a similar fate. Been coming here for 10 years and this is our favorite last-night-of-vacation dinner that's become an annual tradition. We ordered 2 lobster rolls (one with butter and one with Mayo), onion rings, and two clam cakes. I was told that I would receive a text when the food was ready. We went to the rear patio and, the second I received the text, I headed inside to get our order. Upon bringing it outside, it was immediately evident that the food had been sitting in the bag for quite some time, as the onion rings and clam cakes were cold and soggy and the Mayo lobster roll (typically cold) had warmed from the steam in the bag. I took the food back in and explained the issue to the girl working the to-go table. She said "I'm sorry, we got really busy. We can remake it if you can just sit in here and wait". I left my wife outside on our last night of vacation and waited for the order to be remade. Once the new order was ready (approximately 10 minutes later), I went back outside to finally eat only to realize they forgot to include one of the two lobster rolls. I took the order back inside and requested to speak to a manager. The girl behind the counter went to get the manager who was hanging out at the bar. The manager opened the conversation with "what's the problem? I was back there when they made it and it was perfect". I informed him that it was not perfect, considering they forgot one of the lobster rolls. I further explained the initial mishap, noting the fact that the food had become cold and steamed the Mayo lobster roll, and he said "well, the lobster roll is supposed to be warm". I explained that the Mayo lobster roll absolutely should not have been warm. At this point, he said "well I don't know what you want me to do. Do you want a refund?" I slid the bag to the left on the table and said "yes, I am not eating this," to which he responded "okay, you don't have to throw the bag at me". Under no circumstance would I ever "throw" a bag at anyone and I let him know that the entire exchange was ridiculous and combative for absolutely no reason. I finally informed him that we would never be back and I will stand by this. As I said, this used to be a favorite part of our trip before driving 700 miles back home. Instead, it was an evening that ended without eating dinner and it's sad to know that Huot's is no longer the place we once knew. read more

Huot's is one of those staples in the Saco scene, especially when it comes to fried seafood. Located conveniently by Camp Ellis, it attracts many tourists and visitors looking to fill their craving of Maine seafood. From the outside, the restaurant almost seems kind of divey, however, the inside dining room is well-maintained and clean. The inside certainly upholds an up-scale kind of feel. The restaurant has two options: you can order from the outside and take your food to the beach, or you can dine in. I remember being little and my parents taking me to Huot's to order at the window and then sitting on the large rocks at the beach. However, just the other day, we went here for Mother's Day and decided to dine in. For being Mother's Day, the place was packed, however, it is normally packed on any given night, so be sure to make a reservation. We ended up making a reservation for noon on Mother's Day, and we were seated right on time. The restaurant serves a variety of food with the obvious focus being on fried seafood. Other options tend to feel more diner-like. I ended up ordering the fried scallops ($20) and my counterpart ordered the fried clams ($22) with the intention of splitting them. The scallops were exploding with flavor and were truly the best fried scallops I have had. However, I quickly regretted agreeing to split with my husband, as the clams were dull and lacked taste, which I assume is just the time of year, however, the scallops were prime. The fries are cooked nicely, and the coleslaw was not my favorite, but they serve decent portions. Is this someplace I would frequent weekly? Probably not, however, it is a great place to bring visitors from out of the state or to visit every so often, especially due to it's great location. read more

Huot's is a super cute seafood restaurant located right off of the beach in Saco. This past mother's day, I came to Huot's with my family. Being that it was mother's day this place was PACKED! Luckily we had a reservation and they had our table ready as soon as we arrived. The restaurant itself is super cute and has a nice beach vibe that you would expect at a seafood place right off of the beach. The service staff was kind and was eager to help when requested. To start or lunch the table got a couple orders of fried onion rings. These were seriously some of the best I have ever had. They had a thick fluffy fried coating all around and tasted fantastic! Highly recommended if you come here! For my meal I ordered the fried clams and my husband got the fried scallops and we split them both. Unfortunately I did not find the clams to be very good. I totally understand that this is not the restaurants fault as I'm sure you get what you get when it comes to seafood, but it was disappointing given my excitement for some good fried clams. Luckily my husband and I split our meals as the fried scallops were amazing. The batter/coating that they put on their fried food is perfect. Its not too heavy or light and adds just the right amount of flavor to the food. The prices were also very reasonable for the large portions that they provide. Today for Father's Day the family ordered for the first time from Huot's. Totally loved it. We did take out because of the Coronavirus and the service was amazing. We have a food allergy as well and the person on the phone taking the order was extremely helpful. My son devoured his burger and my wife and in-laws raved about their scollops and haddock which were huge portions. I got the fried clams and shrimp with a side of fries and onion rings. We LOVE this place! A friend recommended it years ago and we've gone every year since while on vaca in OOB. I wish I took pics but we were so into our food! First off, they no longer have dine in service. We almost didn't go but then read you can order on line ahead of time, they still have a full service bar, and then sit inside or outside. I'm so glad we went! Got the white sangria which was DELISH! Seriously it's worth the $10! My husband got the fried scallops which were perfectly cooked and oh so sweet! Our girls got the crab cakes, chicken sandwich, grilled cheese and tomato soup which they loved, and the rest of us ordered the lazy lobster with mashed potatoes - drizzle some of that leftover yummy butter over those tots, and what a feast! I was worried it wouldn't be as good without the dine in but the 7 of us had a great time and were full and happy afterwards! I have been going to Huots for fish sandwiches for years, delicious. Today my wife and I went for the first time this season. We each had the haddock sandwich with small fries. The sandwich was so difficult to eat, it just fell apart and was not very tasty. The fries were bland as well. And the 2 meals came to $50.00. The was not satisfying at all for the price. Been to Huots many times in the past. Went here just yesterday for the first time of the season. Man oh man, what happened? Clam cake was still good but the fried clams I have to say were probably the lousiest I've had in years. So unfortunate. My wife's haddock sandwich was unedible because the role was saturated with fake butter. The menu says all sandwiches come with fries but the girl says not with the haddock sandwich. So another $7.50 for a small order of store-bought french fries. Even if you order at the outside window you still need to go in and get condiments yourself. Just an overall disappointing experience. Might want to change the name to "Ruin Its". Hopefully they can turn it around before they lose it. read more

Full disclosure; in the good natured Houts vs. Wormwoods local restaurant debate, I was always a Wormwoods girl. Obviously I had to convert once Wormwoods was torn down. I've gradually grown to love the outdoor "beer garden style dining" though I sure do miss eating their delicious food off of stoneware plates and with silver plate. Baked haddock just tastes better in real dishes. While the food remains pretty traditional and yummy under the new owners, our party of four was raising our eyebrows at the 65 minute wait for dinner on Friday night. Thank goodness the bartenders were fast and there was a guitar player to entertain us on a beautiful breezy and sea salt smelling evening. Also glad my children are grown as there would be no way they could wait that long. The staff was gracious, even apologetic, so we didn't even share that our mashed potatoes were cold, we were kind of too hungry at that point. Hoping the kinks work out and the season gets better with experience. As locals of several generations, we will give it another shot. If you're a visitor or new to the area, it's always been a mainstay, so please give it a try, just don't go if you are in a rush read more

OMG! The clam cakes are AWESOME! We go down to Huot's several times during the season and eat out on the breakwater! What a fun and yummy way to spend a lovely summer evening. My husband usually has a burger which is very tasty and then some fried shrimp and we share the onion rings done in batter. YUM. Now they have an outside area covered with sun sails. There is a bar out there for those who want to order drinks. It's a great place to eat and we are SO happy they are opening at the end of this month! Really impressed with how Huot's handled social distancing and the flow of patrons when we stopped in for dinner in July. Outside dining tables were being cleaned regularly and spaced more than six feet apart. It was the only time I felt truly safe dining out while we were visiting Maine. And the food? Huot's has been part of our lives for 50 years as my family vacationed here every summer and it was the best back then! There is outdoor seating where you are close to beach, but can't physically see it; catch is there is no waitstaff that will serve you if you sit outside-you have to order to-go and just eat outside. This was not a big deal. The food was reasonably priced. I had the fish sandwich which was pretty good. Slaw, fries, and burger was average. Was pretty disappointed that tarter was little Kraft fast food to-go packets. I wanted NE Clam Chowder. They served what was called NECC on the menu; it was tasteless, watery, and had some sort of greasy, chorizo-like greasy substance floating on the top. When I asked for refund, the staff, with a straight face told me that was the way they serve it. To their credit, they refunded it and everyone was nice. Bar service was very good read more
