We haven't grabbed a meal here in a while and now that Redwood City is hosting Friday night free concerts outside city hall we are back with our bottles of wine and cheese plates and having a grand old time with other here to enjoy the summer music series. After the show we were able to grab a quick and fairly priced dumpling dinner at I Dumpling. We got our usual go to lamb dumplings (12 for about $11), the pork and scallion dumplings (12 for $10) and a meat pancake ($10) which is yummy as well and previously would be sold out by late in the evening ! Hands down my favorite Taiwanese spot on the peninsula. If you're an adventurous eater and can handle some spice, get the marinated seaweed salad and shaved spicy beef tendon starters. The noodles are made in house and I always go for the spicy beef noodle soup with bokchoy and wood ear mushrooms. Great for to go orders or a quick lunch spot. I really wanted to love this restaurant because I love dumplings and they are one my comfort foods. I decided to get some takeout a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. Parking for now seems to be more difficult in the small downtown Redwood City area because of the outdoor dining setups for the restaurants up and down this short street. I completely understand and I hope visitors to this area are just as patient and understanding. For my first time here, I phoned in my order of Shanghai Soup Dumplings(or XLB) and one order of their Beijing Noodles(or traditionally called Jia Jiang Mien). For the people who have never tried this dish, it's based on a black bean paste sauce mixed in with minced pork on top of noodles, and served with veggie garnish. My order was ready in less than 20 minutes for pickup as promised on the phone. Unfortunately, after my first visit I'm not impressed by both dishes. The skin on the Soup Dumplings was too thick and starchy for my tastes and not what I'm used to from other XLB places. The Beijing Noodles sauce was mostly bland for my tastes and the noodles were almost soggy and not al dente(chewy and firm) as I would expect. Their style just isn't what I would prefer but this may suit your preferences so it's worth a try if you're looking for this type of food in the Redwood City area. read more

I had a great lunch here. This place is a tiny hole in the wall, definitely not a fancy restaurant by any means. It's nicely located in downtown Redwood City and it was not too hard to find street parking nearby. We did come early, before 11:15 on a Friday, so it wasn't too hard to find a seat, but the restaurant did fill up. This place serves very fresh dumplings and potstickers. With the prices on the menu, it wasn't clear exactly how big the portions are or how much to order, but we got dumplings, potstickers, wood ear mushroom dish, green onion pancake, and chow mein for two people and it was about $20 a person. The kitchen is open and you can see them preparing the food to order. Definitely not fancy, but very delicious and affordable. read more

Some of y'all have lost all sense of reality with your Bay Area privilege. Don't compare this mom and pop restaurant to chains like DTF. This place is affordable and very similar to actual home cooking. Most of the people leaving bad reviews probably can't even make boxed mac and cheese, let alone dumplings from scratch. The pork and cabbage dumplings are good. Every family has their own way of making dumpling wrappers. If you think it's too thick, try making a dumpling wrapper from scratch and rolling out the dough without having it tear apart when you put the filling inside. I'm partial to the noodles since my hometown is known for handpulled noodles, but they taste better than getting frozen noodles from any Asian grocery store in the area. The XLB is decent for the price and truly tastes like it's made by parents (not famously trained chefs). read more

Very small shop in Redwood City. We had pig ears, pork dumplings, lamb dumplings, salt & pepper tofu, and soup dumplings. I naturally don't like pig ear, so I can't comment too much on them. The person that ordered them barely ate them and didn't box much to go, if that helps. Pork and lamb dumplings were not bad. They may be competitive with Trader Joe's dumplings, I guess. Salt & Pepper tofu was not bad, but they might have been a bit excessive on the corn starch. We were able to eat most of this, though. Soup dumplings were okay, but not very soupy. All dumplings had very thick dough if you're into that. Not part of my rating, but the bathroom is a mess. Got to look in the kitchen on the way to the bathroom and saw meat just sitting in the open marinating. Felt nauseated afterwards, but not sure if it was because of food prep or just a psychosomatic symptom of what I saw. Would much rather eat Koi Palace in San Jose or even Din Tai Fung. read more

Was craving Taiwanese food and left with a literal bad taste in my mouth. This place masquerades as a Taiwanese restaurant and the food is pretty shite. Had the cold tofu app which was just a fresh out of the pack tofu, still shedding water, cut up and mixed with a bit of soy, sesame oil and cut scallions and it tasted like.... watery tofu cubes in slightly seasoned water. Zero effort put into making this palatable. I watched the waitress cut up the tofu wondering what she was doing in the kitchen. Unsanitary! The bento was worse, pork chop was almost see through greasy and tasted like it had been lingering in a soy marinade before frying in old oil. It had the nuance of soy sauce and grease, one dimensional flavor and oily. The pickled veg was acrid and just straight salty, combined with the salty pork chop, it just intensifies the saltiness. The cabbage isn't pickled, it's just parboiled in yet another slightly soy flavored liquid. All in all, it's a gag inducing combination of tastes. I'm hesitant to use flavors because there was none. Take the items off the menu if you're going to so thoroughly disrespect the food and more importantly, your customers with such a poor attempt and thinking they don't know better. read more

I'll give this place the benefit of the doubt - I was in the area and couldn't find anything else I felt like eating, so stopped by this place. Admittedly, I don't know if I can rate it accurately as we ordered dishes that weren't their specialty dumplings, but I was craving this and it's still a measure of what not to order here. Shanghai Soup Dumpling (6 pcs), $5.85. These came out without a soup spoon and on a paper plate, both of which made it difficult to eat in comparison to other places. Believe me when I've said that I've had my fair experiences, but paper plates make it difficult to pick up with the lowkey melted dumpling exterior in comparison to plastic - I think it could have been passable if it was even on a plastic sheet, but nevertheless I managed to eat it with soup still intact. The filling was good and had lots of flavor, but the exterior... I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I've had better frozen ones. The creases weren't present at all and kinda melted together, but I suppose it was passable purely due to filling. Green Onion Cake (1 pc), $4.65. I've only had the thick variety in Shanghai, and the item here is the thin one. I won't be judging it in comparison with others, but I genuinely only tasted oil in this, very little if no hint of green onion. While it was good because fried dough is always good, I guess it wasn't what I was looking for. It may have upset my stomach a tiny bit as well, but at least I know now. Sliced Marinated Pig Ears, $7.95. I would say this dish was passable, to my liking it was exceedingly normal, as the ingredient itself is the focus of the dish. It was marinated purely in a soy sauce blend (dark and light probably) and with fresh green onion. Huge portion and wouldn't be opposed to getting this again if I had the craving. That being said, I am not Shanghainese so while my evaluation of this place in terms of these items might not be accurate, but to my preference it wasn't necessarily my favorite. If I was going for value though, I might consider coming back. In terms of the place itself, there were copious flies outside the entrance which was off-putting, as I haven't been to a hole in the wall place in a while, but sanitary? I'm still a bit paranoid about sanitary value, ever since COVID. There are only about 3 tables there, and current state of dining is on paper plates. It's hard to feed 2 people for less than $30 in this area, including tip. It's a nice change from bigger and fancier restaurants. This is literally a hole in the wall Chinese eatery right on the corner of El Camino Real and Broadway. Don't expect much when it comes to ambience or decor, they put all their effort into the food and service. Came here at 11:30 a.m. for lunch on a Sunday. While there is no parking garage, all street parking is free on Sundays if you can find an open one. Pro-tip, if you're willing to walk, there is a strip mall with a Safeway grocery store about 0.2 to 0.3 miles away with plenty of parking available. When I came in there was only one other set of customers in the store. I was surprised since I read reviews saying that the place is usually packed. However I must have gotten lucky because right around 11:45 to 12:00, the place was completely filled, every table was taken, and the establishment was extremely lively. From what I can tell, there were two staff members in the kitchen, and one on the floor. Don't let this fool you though, service is excellent. Not only did the waitstaff visit my table three times before my friend and I finally conceeded to temporarily stop trying to catch up and order first, we had clean chopsticks, napkins, and plates before us, shortly followed by a cup of ice water each. My friend and I ordered vegetarian potstickers, vegetarian dumplings, lamb dumplings, and green onion pancakes. Despite having the entire restaurant be packed with other customers, our food came at lightning rate. I think between ordering and getting our food, it was maybe a total of 5 minutes. Everything we ordered came piping hot, and everything was good. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but I do have to say for the price point, it's fantastic value. I'm used to most dumpling establishments charging almost a dollar per dumpling, but instead here you can get it for $6-7 for a dozen. Our four items, plus tax and tip, came out to be $35. And oh man, we were so full! Not bad for two people. If you want good food at great prices, I highly recommend checking this place out. I've ordered here a couple of times (sit in and pick up) and they were all to my expectations. Unfortunately I didn't get to take any pictures because I was starving but I highly recommend it. The prices are very affordable and the food comes out fast. The service was great as well. I usually order the Xiao Long Bao/soup dumplings, Pork and Shrimp Dumpling with Green Chives, and Chow Mein. I love eating the dumplings with black vinegar (not sure what the actual name is) and ginger. If you are used to thin skin dumplings, you may not like it since the dumpling skin is thick so just a heads up. It is a small place so there's limited seating. It is very nice inside though. For pickup orders (in my experience) they give you sauce, but make sure to ask for sauce or anything else just in case! read more

I have no idea how this joint has high reviews. Mind you, this review is for the food only via delivery. I got the veggie dumplings that had minced unknown veggies inside with no flavor. It's called I Dumpling, so just get the dumplings. They're pretty small, but flavor and texture wise, they immediately remind me of Taiwan. Love the thick wrap and the juiciness of the meat. Utterly fantastic. While I wish the prices on frozen dumplings were lower, I'll just chalk it up to Bay Area premium pricing. My new go to Chinese place! We ordered their crispy tofu, soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, chow mein, green onion pancakes and red bean pancake. 10/10 for crispy tofu. The outside is so crispy, and the tofu inside is so juicy and soft. we didn't not expect it would be so juicy inside. The chicken chow mein looks not that appealing, but it was so flavorful and yummy! We didn't expect that, would definitely order again! 10/10! Their name says dumpling, so that's what we ordered when we visited last weekend. Two orders of xiao long bao, one order of pork/napa cabbage dumplings, plus fried chicken bento and string beans. Everything was solid. The dumplings were tasty, though the xlb skin was a little thicker than I prefer. They didn't provide vinegar and ginger as is typical, which was strange. The fried chicken was my favorite. The best part about this place is the value for money. $6.45 for 12 dumplings and $7.95 for the bento, to give you some idea of what you're getting.
