When I first came here, I thought I had timeslipped to Japan. The ambience here reminds me of Japan in the 80's. They have almost everything you would expect from a Japanese IZAKAYA for example they have the buta kimchee (pan-fried pork with kimchee). Teba daikon (chicken wing with radish) is also a classic dish. I would recommend ZOUSUI, which is perfect to finish off your meal/night. They also have Sushi and rolls, traditional and not. With over 200 affordable menu items, who wouldn't be satisfied? Their dishes aren't Iron Chef-level, but you definitely get your money's worth. Highly recommended. If there is such a large group sitting at one end of the restaurant, why did they seat the 2 of us RIGHT next to them? - The food is passable but mediocre... of note: - Their Yaki-onigiri is not much better than what I can make. Came here last night with the boyfriend. The interior is small and cozy, with lots of hand-written signs everywhere. Service was fast and friendly. Our server came by frequently making sure we didn't go thirsty. She also brought us some edamame to nom on while waiting. We ordered agedashi tofu, tako-yaki, unagi and the yellow tail dinner plate accompanied by a bottle of Asahi. The food was good, I enjoyed the unagi and the yellow tail dinner plate- the dressing on the salad was particularly refreshing. Pretty chill place to grab some bites and drinks with friends. It's relatively small, but cozy at the same time. I've been here a couple times just for beer and sake, but the last time I was here I had some spicy tuna sushi. They should have left the "spicy" part off, because it definitely just tasted like simple tuna sushi rolls to me. False advertising, but fresh nonetheless. Their pitchers are decently priced, and they have some one-cup ozeki sake that come in these awesome glasses. In fact, the boys thought they were soo awesome, that they took them home! Ok, this place is great for a number of reasons: -Interesting as it's an izakaya plus a sushi bar. Usually you will only have one or the other. -It's open late as hell, so you can come here and get stuffed or blitzed or both at a ridiculously late hour -They have beer by the pitcher (sake available too, but obviously by the bottle, not the pitcher...although that would be interesting to see if you could drink a pitcher of that stuff and not drop dead) -They won't chase you off if you lounge around even if you are done eating -Most of the waitresses are pretty cute -The sushi chef is grouchy but funny And most importantly....*drum roll*.. the food is YUMMMY GOOD!!! I walked in, used the bathroom, and it smelled ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE in there. In my adult life, I have NEVVVVVVVER smelled a bathroom as bad as this. It was UNEQUIVOCALLY SHOCKING. I wanted to storm out, but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, so I asked them how much for eel sashimi, and the waiter replied "...three times the price of this..." so basically $16 for 6 pieces, which I felt was a ripoff. I hate it when the staff of a restaurant appear confused when speaking to me or give me vague responses as if I'm stupid. I stormed out. Definitely my go-to restaurant when I get hunger attacks late at night. Even though they take last call rather early compared to their closing time, this place is one of the few decent Japanese restaurants open late. Their udon is my absolute favorite and the combination plates are fairly priced. I came across this place usually when either Ryo is closed or they couldn't serve us. I regret not going here first. This place is quite small but they were helpful enough to seat a party of 8. During the times I went, I tried, their sukiyaki, yakitori, sashimi, soba, sushi, and other japanese dishes. I recommend getting their yakitori platter to try out different types of yakitori. I love their sashimi while having a pitcher of sapporo. I recommend getting the sukiyaki during a cold weather since it really hits the spot. The sushi and their cutlet meals were average, nothing special. For appetizers,I tried their okonomiyaki and it was pretty good. Had Taiyaki for dessert that comes with ice cream. Quite delish!! Overall, the service there was pretty helpful. They refilled our glasses of water and checked up on us often. After playing a round of golf, my partners wanted to have some beer and snacks. The decision was made to go to Iccho. Arrived at Iccho around 5:30p, only four table were occupied and we had our choice of tables. The interior was typical Japanese like for SoCal. I enjoyed the conversation between my friend and the waitresses in Japanese. After the first pitcher of beer came out, and the toast to a good round of golf, foods kept arriving at the table. For what I remember, we had Edamame, Various Yakitori, another pitcher of beer, Tempura, Kimchi, Sushi Combo, Beef Tongue and Cold Soba. Service was attentive, fast, and with a smile. read more

I went here on a Friday night after work with a few buddies for some late night cravings for food! It's great that this place is open so late! The service here was good. Prompt seating, getting us our menu and drinks, and they were quite easy to grab when we needed something! I ordered a simple gyudon (beef bowl) and while it was nothing out of this world, the taste was great and very reasonable for the price. Looked good too (presentation is always important too!). This is definitely a hot spot for some late nite munchies. It's a izakaya, so it serves tons on appetizer type dishes. Another plus, it's got Sapporo beer on draft. A couple of dishes that stood out was the tonkatsu on the skewer, and the fried tempura with seaweed. My first review ...... but been meaning to write a review for a long time (I just found Yelp recently). This place is so dirty. They have a B rating that should be a C, if not a D. There is more dust accumulated on the tables and chairs then their shrimp tempura has batter. Even though 60% of their customers are non Japanese, they still have all their specials in Japanese so if you can't read Japanese you're relegated to ordering off the sticky and dusty menu. You're probably asking "why don't you ask the server about the specials?". Well, none of the servers speak English very well. One time I did ask and she gave me the stink eye and walked away. New server came after 10 minutes and she did the same thing. The food is mediocre at best. The price is little high for what you get. Overall a one star. read more

Oh thank god for Iccho! I've been here 3 times now, and still haven't made it through even a third of their menu! But I'll keep coming here whenever I have a late night Japanese food craving or craving for Sapporo draft! This time, my girlfriend and I got Horenso Goma Ae (blanched spinach with sesame dressing), Kinpira Gobo (cooked burdock root), a couple of skewers of yakitori (Tebasaki, Tsukune, asparagus wrapped in bacon), some roasted eggplant, okonomiyaki and beer. We started off with some Asahi, but after comparing the two menus we had, I noticed one had "Kirin draft" and the other had the "Kirin draft" covered with "Sapporo draft." Sapporo draft???? Even though it's from Canada, it's so far superior to the bottle! And yes, they do have it! So it was on to the Sapporo drafts in big frosty mugs. The yakitori was good, not quite Torimatsu good, the eggplant was apparently charred because the skin was taken off, and the goma ae was very good. The prices were very reasonable - especially for the eggplant, goma ae and Sapporo draft. And on top of that, we got there at 10:15 on a Sunday night and they were open until midnight!!! The chicken teriyaki + tempura combo was delicious. I love that their tempura includes onion. Can you say yum? A nice slab of deep fried tempura onion! Good lord, so tasty. I have not been to Iccho in years. We were searching for a sushi place that was open on Sunday (Hirose and Mirui) and ended up here. For Sunday at 845pm, Iccho was fairly busy. The tables were all full so we opted for the sushi bar. We ordered: Appetizers: Tempura (small), chicken karage, chawamushi Sushi: Yellowtail, Tuna, Albacore, Salmon The cooked food was fair. The chicken karage was stuck together and soggy. The chawamushi was huge and it had all the components (shrimp, scallop, veggies, and mushroom) but egg was kinda bland. The Tempura was no hot and crispy. The nigiri sushi was so-so. The portions of fish was fairly large but the rice fell apart after I grabbed it. The fish luckily was fresh I was concerned that it would be not-so fresh. I think part of the issue is the sushi chef does not care about his job. I watched him make other pieces of sushi and it was like he was going thru the motions. There were pieces falling apart and he just reassembled them in order for them to go out. The wait staff service was great. Tea was refilled in timely manner and dishes taken away quickly. I am sad to see such a great place from my high school days become 2 STAR restaurant 15 years later. read more

Walked in late - 10pm for a snack. This place only sits 60 so we had to wait for people to leave and open a table up for us - the place was packed. The wait was about 10 minutes. There were alot of menu items but we ordered yakitori. The service was extremely slow - we asked the waitstaff a couple of different times for more tea and beer. We ordered niku jaga, quail eggs (way over cooked), bacon wrapped mochi with cheese (was good), pork skin ( i liked the crispy skin), beef, chicken, onokomiyaki - we wanted ice cream to but considering it took 2 1/2 hrs to get that much, we decided to leave. I've been coming here for almost 10 years, and the nights are always better than lunch here. I'm probably one of the few Asians you'll meet who doesn't like raw fish. My favourite local izakaya. Always packed, Izakaya can be a tough place to get a seat from 7pm onwards. It's only open in the evenings for dinner, and it's open till 2am. They have a great selection of Japanese edibles here, a menu too large to really describe. The yakitori menu is pretty comprehensive, they've got all the piping hot organ meats you're looking for. I come here for the tonkatsu - great comfort food. You can spend a lot of money here, or you can sneak out without breaking your bank. As to the sushi, the fish is always pretty good, but not spectacular, and they make a nice chirashi. I've come in here towards the end of the night on several occasions and they've marked down all of the sushi for quick sale. Always a nice surprise. read more

First impression, the restaurant feels homey. It has this typical old school Japanese restaurant vibe with hand written and drawings of food items they offer pinning on the wall. It's casual. Good for family with children since they have a variety of dishes from bento boxes to udon. They also offer sushi or rolls. Overall, the food is okay for the price paid. Kids eat and enjoy their food and that's all it matters. The flavor is light and not at all salty! If you come for a quick lunch I would definitely recommend it. I visited this place several times before, and most of the time what I ordered were pretty good. I placed a take out - Chirashi, Katudon and few appetizers for the New Year's Eve. Chirashi was pretty good but Katsudon was a totally disappointment!! The pork/meat was soooooo thin (not even 1/4 in) and completely separated from outer coating and just looked like a large lump of eggs... I was very sad..... Well prepared, good flavors, etc. That said, I have a lot of gripes about the service, but my friends assured me that it wasn't normally as bad as it was this time we came. My friend ordered a sea urchin special they had. All our food came, except his. We waited another 5 minutes. Still no special. No waitresses coming by to check on us. Finally about 15-20 minutes later we flag one down. She goes to check, comes back 5 minutes later - says they are sold out of the special tonight. He ordered something else, it came out in 10 minutes, all good. And then they proceed to not refill my water or come by at all for the next hour or so. We wait for the bill for 30 minutes until I finally flag down one of the staff. Perhaps they were exceptionally busy that night. I won't hold that against them in the star rating, but I will if it happens again. At least they were friendly and courteous about it, but just not as aware and on top of service as I would like. read more
