Look, one of the best ways to tell if a Sushi restaurant is great is to see how full it is of Japanese patrons. This place is always packed. All the workers are Japanese. No Korean or chinese owners or any of that stuff. I want authentic from authentic chefs of that ethnic cuisine. I've been to every Sushi place in Los Angeles and none compares to the freshness and Japanese feel of this place. If you have ever been to Japan, you would understand why so many Japanese people love this place. I agree the service can be on the slow side a bit, but this is a sushi place and when it's packed all the time, that's a pretty normal pace for a sushi restaurant compared to a normal restaurant. If you are true sushi aficionado, you can tell how good a sushi place is by the Uni (sea Urchin) and some other types of fish and see how flavorful and fresh it is. Also this place is open until 2 AM every day. I discovered it years ago on a Sunday night. I walked in at 11:30 and had to wait for 5 minutes on a Sunday night! When i left at 1 AM, people were still coming in, and once again, this is a SUN night! You will not find a better late night restaurant at 1 AM. See if Jerry's Deli can compare to this. And for the comments of the "staff seemed a little confused". They are truly Japanese people and many of them were not born here. Can you say language barrier?! That's what makes it even better. The atmosphere is Japanese and they don't discriminate. Kent H is a novice when he only order the beef-don with egg. He said nothing spectacular about it. That's because he ordered a nonspectacular meal. And Brian Y ate food that was so Americanized-sushi. Bacon Wrapped Asparagus? And we are suppose to judge his opinion. The one thing bad about Yelp, is you can get plenty of novices making comments about any restaurant. Clueless about authenticity and real flavors and how to order ethnic cuisines and not well-travelled is usuall the norm, making comments all over the place. I've been to about 60 countries around the world and not your typical Eurpean places too. Real world travelling. Authentic Japanese pub/restaurant makes you feel like you are in Nagoya, without the drunk office workers stumbling home. Food is just average, prices are ok, and the place is always busy. The check-ins I have on Yelp do not equate to the amount of times I've actually been here. I'm almost done with college now and have been a regular here with my family since high school. It's a great spot for my family since my mom comes home late a lot and is usually craving a nice hot bowl of noodles. The food is pretty good and well-made. You can taste how fresh the batter is for their tempura when you bite into their shrimp tempura. I like to switch my order when I come but I've recently taken a liking to their stir-fry udon dish with kimchi and pork. The service is okay. It is a bit slow at times but you can't blame them too much since it does get a little crowded late into the evening. The atmosphere is super lightly especially if you come on a busy night. People usually come in after work and stay until 1 or 2 in the morning drinking alcohol so expect it to be loud and lively. read more

Came here last night for dinner with my kids and the quality of our food was so different, I don't know quite how to rate this place, so I'll give it 3 stars. The boys got orders of the yakitori in chicken, fatty pork and chicken wings and the taste was amazing! I ordered the combination dinner with beef teriyaki and mixed tempura.The tempura was pretty good but the beef teriyaki was cold and the toughest beef I ever had in my life! Iccho was my first introduction to the japanese 'izakaya' restaurant, aka similar to tapas bar style dining. In fact its a combination tapas/sushi/yakitori joint and it has a 'late night diner' atmosphere that attracts the South Bay locals at all hours. While seating is limited, the decor is very informal and atmosphere cozy, making it the perfect place to unwind for some late night snacking and drinking with a few friends or even solo if you've had a long, rough day at work. Last time i went i ordered the yakitori sampler plate, oden fishcake stew, and an order of takoyaki. I see two types of diners who come here; those who navigate the enormous menu and know exactly what the want, wasting no time, and those who spend forever (like me) because everything looks good and cannot make up their minds what they want to eat. Not much variety of izakaya plates. Try the Soft Shell Crab sauteed with Chili Sauce - its not spicy as we thought it would be but was the best dish we ordered. The Foil Wrapped Seafood & Mushroom - which was salmon, mushrooms and few pieces of squid, was good. I liked the Kimchi and Octopus, the salty and sour component was def needed among all the dishes we had in front of us. Do not order the Sashimi platter - our large was lacking much and left us hungry. this place is just decent for me however its close and it stays open late. There's quite a large variety of items to choose from on the menu. sushi, yakitori, grilled fish,and your typical fried foods to name a few. we usually just get a bunch of small dishes and share them along with a cold beer to wash it all down. I've come here quite a few times over the years, and had a decent experience. I came here this past week and it wasn't as good as I had remembered it to be. I ordered the beef teriyaki, which was drenched in sauce, an overwhelming amount. The sauce itself wasn't bad; it wasn't overly sweet. The meat was tender, but I think that it might have been a weird cut or that they might have cut through the bone in some parts. As I was eating my beef teriyaki, I constantly had to spit out tiny pieces of bone that were in the meat. None of them were big pieces of bone that were visible like that of ribs; there were very small like a grain of rice. I thought that maybe it was just one of the pieces was cut weirdly but there were more pieces where I found there to be small pieces of bone after I started chewing. The tempura that I ordered was very well fried; not overly fried, and there was a nice combination of vegetables and shrimp tempura. Although my experience this time wasn't the most pleasant, I probably will come back again to try it out again. read more

I love this place! They open til2am, plenty of parking, cool place to hangout w friends have some food and beer and sake. My favorite server is azusa. The other female servers are so nice too. I love their super california roll, tofu salad, tempura, sauted udon w kimchi and pork, edamame, and teriyaki beef. I always come here after work around 1130pm and they are always packed. Traditional Japanese cuisine in a casual environment. Love their bbq ground chicken meatballs and wash them down in an ice cold Kirin beer. Sounds too good to be true-right. Just wait- here's a funny story to share amongst foodies. I arrived first and was seated before my boyfriend arrived. I ordered a large bottle of Kirin to wet my whistle before he joins me for dinner. However, much to my chagrin, and later to my boyfriend's delight & endless harassment, I was denied my beer until his arrival. Ahh... We are in 21st century w/ women lib and all. Frankly, I was shocked, but took it with a few chuckles. My boyfriend, on the other hand, won't let me forget how great it is, to know that I cannot drink alone and drink all his beer before he arrives at the table. This is the kind of Japanese food place made by Japanese workers that I enjoy going to with my mom. Granted, it is more of my mom's place than mine. I rarely go here on my own because I am vegan and prefer to frequent ve(getari)an establishments where my menu choices are not as limited. This location gives thumbs up for service, selection choices for vegans, and for having Okinawan beer. However, one must be keenly aware that dishes include no-no ingredients for vegans and must meticulously ask if something has eggs or fish since the menu might not say so but the dish includes it. I can't say how their meat/fish are because I never went in the BV time (before vegan). I also can't say how their service is towards non-Japanese clientele. We have been coming here for years, but so disappointed last week. Since I was having minor surgery the next day, I wanted a delicious meal before I had to "fast" til the next evening. I ordered the sashimi and beef teriyaki combo. The sashimi was brought first and I had trouble recognizing it as sashimi. There were 8 very thin, scrawny pieces of fish on a dish. My husband and I couldn't believe that 3 pieces were actually seared! This is the first time I've had seared fish served as sashimi! The ahi pieces were less that 1/4" thick, the edges were jagged - definitely not the work of a sushi chef. The beef teriyaki was paper-thin, grilled on one side only and tougher than shoe leather. My husband had the tempura and chicken Teri combo. The chicken was good, but the shrimp was pretty skinny. Sad.... I've had this combo many times before, but never like "this". read more

Since I read about the long waits for dinner, been here during early dinner both times. Service was good. Will have to try some of their other items next time. Not sure what's going on, so I waited to write something until my wife and I tried this place a few more times. First off, my family has been going to Iccho for more than 10+ years now. Suddenly 3 visits ago, we asked for all tuna sashimi and all hamachi sashimi with our combinations and were told that they can no longer do that. We explained that we have always ordered this way and have no problem paying the extra charge for the all request, but the waitress said no. We noticed that the waitresses that we have seen for so many years were all not working that night. We ate our meal and things seemed to be the same. Next visit we had our 2 kids with us and again the waitresses that we have known for years were not there. We ordered and ate our food. Some items were pretty much the same but all the sushi was not very tasty. Our last visit was last night and my wife and I tried once again to ask about the all tuna or hamachi. Again they said no. The combinations we ordered (Teriyaki Chicken and Tempura and Tempura and Sashimi) seemed ok. What I'm trying to say is HAVE THEY CHANGED HANDS? Are they UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP? One of my college buddies is from Torrance and frequents this place. He introduced me to Iccho about two months ago. We've been there 3 times already because I'm on the 405 during evening rush hour about once a week and usually elect to exit in Torrance, meet up with him, and get some sushi instead of sitting in traffic. The sushi is pretty good. I usually get the Spicy Tuna Roll (because it is good and inexpensive) and the Alaskan Roll. My friend is Indonesian and much more familiar with Asian cuisine, so his palate leads him to much more exotic/authentic foods, but I usually stick with the aforementioned rolls. The brown rice tea here is really good, but it's caffeinated, and I react badly to caffeine, so I can't have it anymore. I think I had ~ 8 cups of it my first time because I like tea and found their brown rice tea to be particularly good, so needless to say, I was beyond wired the rest of the night. I asked if they had any decaf teas here last night, but alas, they don't, so it looks like I'm going to be drinking just water at Iccho. One thing I will say that left me somewhat unsettled is Iccho's "B" cleanliness rating. My Indonesian friend claims that the "B" stands for "Better" and that most good restaurants have "B" ratings whereas most "A" rated restaurants are not particularly good. Whatever. I'm not sure I buy that logic, but Iccho does seem packed every time I visit, so I suppose that's a big enough collective vote of confidence in their fare. read more
