My friend told me about this place, which is her go-to Japanese in Beaverton. It wasn't until today when I got off work and hungry and was in the mood for rice and homey meal that I thought about it. I got here a little after 6, an older Japanese lady greeted us and we were seated right away. The menu is pretty extensive: udon, donburi, noodles, combo set, sushi, you got it all. We opted for a combo set and some sushi selections. We had salmon roll with cream cheese, spider roll (soft shell crab), and sweet shrimp. Of course sweet shrimp is the best. It is a little pricey, but worth the value. The mackarel that we ordered in our combo set was nice too, very juicy. It could've been crisper, but that's just my personal preference. Tempura udon is of high quality. We spent over an hour from start to finish, the pace is quite slow and did I mentioned that we shared everything between 2 people and managed to get full? The atmosphere is very cozy. I will come back here for sure. The overall vibe feels authentic and almost feels like I am in a mom and pop shop in Japan. read more

You go to some place once, have a bad experience and yelp it. You go someplace else over and over.... and never do a review. In 15 years I must have eaten here atleast 25 times and after each meal I leave happy. From the value to the service to the quality, this place will not dissapoint. Each time is like going to Japan for an hour and a half. Sometimes I just have a light sushi combo- Always fresh, usually served pretty quickly, it is sure to satisfy your sushi jones. Other times its all about a big, crispy plate of pork tonkatsu put down with a few beers. The curry is always great. The udon is always on time. All in all its hard to go wrong at iky's! read more

The wait for an open table was not long. This place is notorious for poor service because the waitstaff is not experienced taking high volume. There is a board towards the back that lists the specials, I don't know if the waitstaff can explain them in detail because their English is just "ok." Menu is decent. We really enjoyed our first visit here. The food tasted very fresh and was delicious with lots of flavor. My husband had the Udon and I had the lunch katsu and California rolls. Yummy!! Big servings, enough that I ate until full and the left overs fed the 2 and 4 year old for dinner tonight. Score! I also received soup and salad with my order, both of these were tasty as well. Our favorite items of the meal were the baked muscles that we ordered. Best that we have ever had - and we have had a lot of them! There was a small wait for the food, but it wasn't bad at all! Ok this place is a staple for me when I want good Japanese food. I love the food, the service, not so much. As stated in previous reviews the service blows. It took 10 minutes to even get water. We were seated in the corner and I was wondering if we were going to be ignored the whole time. I told DH he better order right away when she came, who knows when she'd be back. When the food came though it was superb as always!! I had the sashimi lunch, DH had the Beef sukaki, he finished all of it and there were no leftovers. The key? Not ordering any appetizers, then you can finish your meal. Who's idea was it to come up with appetizers anyhow? I have ordered a combination meal and the ebisu which was alright. The meal I got was the tonkatsu and the tempura which was a delight . The meat was actually there not like this restaurants that flatten the meat then bread it to make it look bigger, the meat was tender and was excellently cooked the tempura was delicious and the flavor of each one was there. This is our favorite Japanese restaurant. They provide quality food such as their Miso soup and their green salad. The salad dressing is excellent. Our favorite dish is the salmon teriyaki with tempura, California rolls & small shrimp salad with cucumber. This is best purchased at lunch as it's price is reduced, but, the quantity isn't diminished. We have made friends with a number of the serving staff. The wait for this quality food is well worth it. This restaurant draws a lot of people. If people worry about the length of time between the order & delivery of the food then you can read the Asian newspapers and enjoy talking and people watching. This is mostly a comment on their lack of customer service. The waitstaff stare blankly at you when you walk in. No "irasshai". I had the lovely experience of walking into an EMPTY restaurant with my family at around 8:30 on a saturday, have the waitress stare blankly at me, continue on with her cleaning, only to greet the 2 men who entered one minute after us and seat them immediately. I'm assuming they must be doing well as a business since they completely ignore and disrespect potential customers. I have eaten their in the past and can say the food from the kitchen and the sushi is average, and their service is slow. There are too many other options for sushi in the area, so why bother with this place. read more

The food is pretty decent here - but the service is just not worth it. We sat for near 30 minutes, I had to wave at her to even acknowledge us. She gestured that she had something to take care of first. Another couple came in after we sat down. I understand they had a reservation, but at that point we had already been sitting for about 15 minutes when the other couple sat down. They got their order taken before us, so we left when that happened. The previous time we went there, they took a while to get to us too, but 30 minutes and counting was just too much. This place is quite the hidden gem! My buddy and I dropped in here looking to satiate a craving for yakisoba, and boy did the yakisoba here hit the spot! Thin cut tender beef, excellent noodles, good flavor, only 10 bucks and they didn't even charge us for tea! The sushi looked great but I was too full to sample anything. I'll to come back for a sushi fix. The atmosphere is very cool, it reminded me of the classin Japanese RPG/Anime restaurant environment. On the Sunday night before the eclipse, they were clearly understaffed and couldn't handle a full house with the 3 waitresses they had. Tables remained uncleared while customers were waiting to be seated. It took us a half an hour to get seated, and another half hour for our entrees to arrive even though none of them required much preparation time. However, the food was some of the best we'd ever had, especially the sashimi. I had the salmon teriyaki/sashimi combo, and I've never had the quantity, quality, and variety (5 kinds) which was included. My wife was similarly impressed with their chirashi zushi bowl. My fiancé has been coming to this establishment since she was young & decided to bring me here for a nice Japanese dinner. The restaurant is quaint & at first felt welcoming. It was busy this evening, there was a party of 3 in front of us who had their table cleaned & were seated. A gentleman from the group ahead of us (who recently got seated) told my lady & I that there is a table for two available that just needed to be a clean, so we patiently waited. The place isn't big but we were NEVER met by a host. We were never told a wait time. As a matter of fact the server/hostess lady seemed to purposely avoid cleaning the available two seater table. I made eye contact with her FOUR times thinking she would walk our way & at least acknowledge us. NOPE!! Instead she immediately put her head down & move towards another table to give them water. A couple came in AFTER us, sat at the bar in which she then proceeded to look at me, hesitate & SURPRISE!! put her head down & moved towards them to take their order. YEAP the couple who came in AFTER us were being attended to before my lady & I were seated as well as before the trio in front us (who didn't even get water at their table). We stood for another 5 minutes & I came to an unfortunate realization that they weren't interested in our patronage. Hands down the best Japanese food I've had outside of Japan. I can't count how many times I've been here since I was taken to the restaurant about 8 years ago. I've never had anything bad here, and I've tried a lot. The Bento B is the family favorite and most commonly ordered as it gives you a tasty sampling of several things. The sunomono is delicious, as is the miso soup and even the salad that comes with the meal. For sashimi lovers, Bento A is a good substitute as the sushi here is always fresh. Other favorites of ours include the curry udon, the tempura udon (tempura on the side), and the katsu don which is better than some of those I ate in Japan. Service is friendly, especially if you are a regular. The restaurant is almost always busy, so calling ahead can be a good idea. It is very popular with Japanese people, who usually constitute 2/3 of the business. I really don't have anything to complain about this restaurant, just a classic example of wonderful, authentic food at a hole in the wall restaurant. read more

Ikenohana is a gem, an authentic mom and pop Japanese place, tucked away in a strip mall. You won't find fancy fusion nonsense here. Instead you'll see a large menu of Japanese restaurant favorites and sushi, with options that you can't find at most places, like yamakake or natto. The portions are very generous and the menu is easy on the wallet. A combo dinner with two items is easily two separate meals. My party tried the sukiyaki, tempura udon, salmon teriyaki, tuna yamakake don, assorted nigiri, and natto maki. Everything was good and the service was perfectly polite and attentive. Do yourself a favor and go to Toshi. The place has a decent amount of space and came accommodate large parties, but the service is slow and disorganized. Don't be surprised if you wait longer here than at smaller places even though there are a lot of empty seats. The sushi is just ok. It's not the freshest but it's not the most expensive either. My sashimi still had part of the skin left over. Either their skill in cleaning isn't as great, they are a little more lazy in getting that last bit off, or they are stingy and don't want to lose more meat by cutting off that part. To me it shows less care in your work as presentation is part of the craftsmanship for sushi chefs. For about the same price though you can get a lot more at Toshi. I would say I think the regular ramen taste a little better here than Toshi, but I would still prefer the one at Toshi as it has a more authentic taste to me. They use spinach, carrots, and broccoli here in their ramen. Not that you can't have those ingredients, but the carrots make the broth taste sweeter which is not a taste I'm looking for in ramen broth personally. I would say less care was taken in keeping the broth clear. It gots globs of oil and it doesn't seem like it was intentional. It seems more like put it in the pot and just let it boil away... Same price range go to Toshi. Want better ramen go to Yuzu. read more

This place is a hidden jewel. The food is consistently good, sashimi fresh and overall a great value. I feel it's one of the best sushi restaurants in Portland because of food quality and value. For example, dinner for our family of four usually comes out to under $90 with tip and alcohol. That same dinner at Sinju (Bridgeport) would easily cost over $130 as we've done in the past. The Tiger Roll is one of my favorites and they make a great tasting veggie tempura roll that is not on the menu but you can request it. My only complaint is that their sake and beer selection is pretty slim. I think this is one area they are really missing out on to increase alcohol sales with more selection offerings. I saw the same sake brand they serve there at the local Asian grocery store and their markup was pretty darn low compared to other sushi bars. So hey as long as their sake prices are very reasonable, I'm not complaining too loud. So kudos to Ikenohana for doing that. Tip: Go when their female sushi chef is working - usually weekends. I've discovered after eating there for years that she is the best sushi chef there and hands down her sushi is better than her male counterpart. I've had his version of the Tiger Roll and it was not as tasty as hers or as neatly rolled/prepared. Overall service is good and it can get pretty crowded on the weekends so it can be a bit slower but it's worth it. Be prepared to wait for a table unless you go really early. read more

A gift from the Gods. Ikenohana. It means "little flower" in English. Anyone who complains about the slow service are probably boring, suburban white people who refuse to use chopsticks and use forks instead. Ugh. Go back to Dennys. You have to know when the right times are when to go. There are about 25 seats so don't expect to just waltz in on a Friday night with your uptight fiancé and expect to get seated quickly without a reservation. With the rising costs of fish and Japanese related food in general, this restaurant is priced very well. I have been going to this sushi spot for 16 years and have never left disappointed, we even brought all of our prom dates one time and they easily accommodated all 12 of us. Its tied with the Sherwood Fuji's as my favorite sushi place. I'm a sushi snob. My mother is Japanese and I've had the best sushi around the world, let alone Japan. Yes, I admit it - but it's the ONLY thing I'm a snob about. When I walk into a Japanese restaurant I expect Japanese-style service (i.e. excellent). Every Japanese restaurant (even non-Japanese owned) I've been to greets visitors with "irrashaimase" (welcome), but nope...I thought we were inadvertently wearing our cloaks of invisibility because not once in 11 minutes of standing at the entrance did someone even nod in our direction, despite my gently waving at the wait-staff. Also, I like sitting at the sushi bar. I like to see the fish and ask the chef what he recommends that day (I've never met a female sushi chef). We were waiting patiently for the bar to get cleaned from the previous guests so that a server would ask us to sit. Then, a couple barged right in front of my friend and I and sat at at a couple of spots who hadn't been cleared. Effin' cheek. The ONLY reason we stayed was because I saw not one, but FOUR Japanese families in the restaurant, plus one Japanese lady at the bar. Otherwise, I would have walked out. Having bitched about the service, the food was good. My friend and I had the sashimi, ama ebi, and ume shiso maki, plus a Portland roll. The sashimi was fresh apart from the tuna, which had that soggy cardboard texture of something that's been frozen too many times. The wasabi was fresh and hot, which is wonderful, and the ginger was house-made. Big plusses. So...4 stars for the food, 2 for the service, hence the 3 star rating. read more

Hidden Gem,... literally hidden in a strip mall between a dry cleaners and a lotto bar (with lots of....umm...interesting people filtering in and out of it...well, it is a lotto bar). Very run of the mill looking on the inside, the usual Japanese art, screens, etc... small sized dining room and kitchen in general. Friendly service as soon as you enter the door, until you leave. Waitstaff greeted a couple of regulars by name as they came in during our time there. We got there as soon as they opened at 5pm on Thursday evening, and within an hour the place was starting to fill up, noticed as we were coming in there were reserved tables. We ordered the sushi platter which came with two rolls, one California, the other your choice (we opted for spicy tuna) two individual shrimp, tuna, unagi and salmon nigiri, a salad, sunomono, and miso soup. It was all absolutely delicious. As good as, if not better than any sushi we've had at Syun, and a lot closer to home. Our friend ordered the veggie sushi platter, which she thoroughly enjoyed, with enough left over for her to have for lunch the following day. Excellent food, great service, and very reasonable prices. We'll definitely go back. On a side note, saw a few reviews complaining about slow service,....ok, this is sushi,.... it's being cut to order for you. This is not fast food. If your on a time table,....don't ever expect to eat anywhere nice! Unless you consider fast food joints nice. Most places like this are usually mom and pop owned so they don't have lots of servers running around, because it's too d#@* expensive to have a big staff and keep costs down for customers. We've been to IIkenohana probably 10 times over the last 4 years and have always found it to be a good value. The portions are ample (the specials are a very good deal) and everything I've sampled seems pretty authentic and consistently above average. The service is a little on the slow side but we like to enjoy a family meal here so what's the big rush? Really ... go to Marinepolis if you need sushi in a hurry. The fact that we always see Japanese families here is a sure sign this place is OK. With a little more attention to the service I'd probably raise my score to 4 stars. read more

The ladies are nice and it is a bit slow at times, but I can wait for good Japanese food in Portland (where there seems to no be so many good Japanese places to eat). They have a sushi bar and a sense of humor because they have a sign for an "Ichi-roll" in reference to Ichiro Suzuki who plays outfield for the Mariners. It's located in a small strip mall. Since living here, i haven't found very many cute little japanese restaurants like the ones in japantown in San Jose, CA. However this restaurant has given me that homey japanese feel, except the waitresses don't wear kimonos. They offer bento sets, and a la carte, curry, udon, ramen, sushi (also have sushi counter) donburi. I like the ebi fry and tonkatsu. they give plenty of it, enough for 3 people to share. dinner also comes with a small side of clear vermicelli noodles and cucumbers in vinegar, salad and miso. they also have different specials posted on the white board and on pieces of paper taped around the restaurant. it gets really crowded during dinner (ive only been here for dinner) so come early or something. we came at 8:30 (they close at 9:30) and still had to wait about 10 minutes. read more

So, I pulled into the Chevron gas station in the same strip mall as Ikenohana, and my car wouldn't start back up after I put gas in it. It was just after 1:00 in the afternoon, and I was hungry, so I decided to park the car and set out for lunch on foot in the strip mall. Subway, no. Taco Bell, yikes. Grocery store food case, no thanks. Then, almost as if spotlights shot out from behind its sign, Ikenohana appeared. Inside, the decor is just like a little lunch spot/noodle house in Japan, where you can have a seat, get a tasty variety lunch box and be on your merry way. For being in the middle of a strip-mall in Beaverton, I was impressed from the start. I ordered a lunch special box that had generous portions, soup, salad, and a bowl of rice for a very modest price. I also ordered some sushi that was fresh and well prepared. The service was fine, the staff was attentive, nice and timely. If you ever get stranded in Beaverton and haven't had lunch yet, this is the spot for you. read more
