I was hopeful when observed that two wait staff and the sushi chef were all Japanese, although the young sushi chef had a personality of a goldfish. I ordered lunch sushi which consisted of decent miso soup and salad with nigiri with California rolls. It was well presented but sushi was terrible. Why? Sushi rice was horrendous. Dry, unflavored, and rice on nigiri was too hard partly because the rice was too dry and needed to be made hard to not fall apart. Sushi rice is the MOST important component of sushi. We ordered as a large group - everyone mostly enjoyed their dish, except that one of our orders was a curry, and since the order was takeout, you would think they would have packed the curry sauce in a separate container with a secure top. But nope, it was just poured onto the rice inside of a regular takeout container, and so after just a light bit of being jostled around in the car, by the time we got home, like 90% of the curry was spilled out into the plastic bag. Lame. I had the 2-item combination with california roll and chicken teriyaki. The california roll was actually pretty good - texture/temperature/taste were all good. I would definitely get that again. But the chicken teriyaki? It really was one of the worst ones I've ever had. I eaten a fair amount of chicken teriyaki, and usually they're strips of chicken breast with some teriyaki sauce on it. This place had square-ish pizza-roll shaped pieces of chicken (which might not be so bad), except that they were super dry, and the sauce was gross - it had this weird almost fishy kind of taste? Just bad all around. The chicken was gross, the sauce was gross, that whole dish was doodoo. Definitely wouldn't come here again, unless someone else was paying. And even then, I would probably only get the california roll. I suppose if I'd gotten something other than the chicken teriyaki, I'd rate this higher, but the teriyaki was just so bad. As a side note, my dad is a pretty old-school Japanese sushi snob, and he said the sushi he got was very good, so take that for what it's worth. read more

It's a great Japanese restaurant with a larger variety of traditional foods than you'll find at many places, not only sushi and teriyaki, though those are great. Things like shioyaki, natto, green tea ice cream. They are also very kid friendly. They had (have?) the first female full-fledged sushi chef (globally, I believe). Fastest sushi rolls ever! We stopped in kinda close to their closing time so I expected less than great customer service, boy was I wrong. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered right away. The rolls came out pretty quick and were really good. Everything was full of flavor and tasted fresh. I don't know how to use chopsticks (yes, yes, I know lol) so I had to ask for a fork which caused a few laughs and made me laugh as well. This is one of the few original AUTHENTIC Japanese restaurants in the area. It's been around for decades! (Literally.) My family & I have been eating at Ikenohana ever since I can remember. The staff is all Japanese (waitresses are older women), the food is consistently good, and even the decor has remained largely unchanged. Don't come here expecting exceptional sushi rolls, again, they're very traditional. DO expect a bit of a wait (I suggest reserving a table ahead of time and knowing what you want to order). I highly suggest their Nabeyaki Udon, Tonkatsu, and Bentos. My favorite is Bento A, because you get a good combo of everything -- tonkatsu, chicken teriyaki, assorted tempura (shrimp & veggies), sashimi (tuna, salmon, hamachi?), 3 cucumber maki pieces, 3 tuna maki pieces, miso soup, salad, and sunomono. All for $16.95 (dinner price)! Plus you can get the tempura ice cream for only $2.95 if you order with the Bento. Had lunch here for a first time visit to this restaurant. Talk about good, food was superbly prepared and delicate but wonderful flavors.

Today I decided to dine here, but was not served at all. I stayed there for a solid 40 minutes, and not even ONE waiter helped me. There was a lot of open tables, and even if they are all reserved, you could've told me, a simple acknowledgment would make my experience a lot better. If the waiter had told me how long I had to wait I would gladly wait more than 40 minutes. BUT NO ONE EVEN WALKED TO THE FRONT AND TALKED TO ME. This is not the first time, I have several friends who also had the same problem, they even waited longer than me. This is a recurring problem that still haven't been fixed, 1 star. read more

Though I am of Japanese descent I am a Yonsei, meaning fourth generation. I'm more American than most white folks. That being said, I was never a huge fan of Japanese food growing up. I have more american tastes so I want my sushi big and fillings creative. Ikenohana offers very traditional Japanese fare. It is very good and fresh. Everyone once in a while you'll eat Japanese and you can definitely tell some corners have been cut. My only complaint is that it's not cheap, but good Japanese food seldom is. I will say that the older Japanese folks love this place. Most of them don't really know how to use a computer, so I say on their behalf. My uncles and aunts will drive from Vancouver to get their fix at Ikenohana. So if you want to treat someone to real Japanese food, apparently this is the place to go. Oh yeah, show up early. Oishii desu nee! The waitresses were super nice and courteous, especially for being very welcoming when I try to practice my terrible Japanese with them. Like other reviews mention their Bento gets spotlight for being both authentic and filling with a nice variety. If there is a criticism it's that it makes it very tempting to always get the bento and never try any of the other great dishes on the menu like Chirashi, soba and other izakaya like foods. The atmosphere matches the food great and very clean. They also put together tables for bigger groups. This is my sushi spot! Ikenohana is in my neighborhood, which is why I originally checked it out. It's in a strip mall, doesn't look like much from outside (or really on the inside for that matter). It's easy to overlook. Once I started eating there, I started craving it and I go monthly now. It's on par and probably a step up from Mio and Yuki. It feels more authentic and is way more consistent. I usually have a bento box and simple rolls like California or Tempura, so I can't speak to the raw sushi quality, through my friend is always pleased. The miso is very good and the green tree is always free-flowing. The katzu and chicken teriyaki in the bento box are always really good and I always enjoy good tempura. The servers are very kind and efficient. It does take some time to get your meal if they are busy, but they do tide you over with the tea, salad, and miso. I'd say 4.5 stars if I could. read more

My friend told me about this place, which is her go-to Japanese in Beaverton. It wasn't until today when I got off work and hungry and was in the mood for rice and homey meal that I thought about it. I got here a little after 6, an older Japanese lady greeted us and we were seated right away. The menu is pretty extensive: udon, donburi, noodles, combo set, sushi, you got it all. We opted for a combo set and some sushi selections. We had salmon roll with cream cheese, spider roll (soft shell crab), and sweet shrimp. Of course sweet shrimp is the best. It is a little pricey, but worth the value. The mackarel that we ordered in our combo set was nice too, very juicy. It could've been crisper, but that's just my personal preference. Tempura udon is of high quality. We spent over an hour from start to finish, the pace is quite slow and did I mentioned that we shared everything between 2 people and managed to get full?
