Amazing Italian food, amazing atmosphere, and amazing service. Had the truffle drizzled steak tartare to start and my breath was soaked in truffle essence. The steak was so fresh and had great balance with the arugula and pecorino. My entree was the "Crackvatelli", as the owner calls it, and it surely would not disappoint. The sausage, the sauce, the pasta - everything was perfect even the portion size. Must must must order. My friend had the filet mignon and he devoured it. I was able to sneak a bite to try the goodness. The oxtail stuffed tortellini was an interesting fusion but I think I had so much flavor from my entree that it just overpowers the oxtail. Still very good though! Dessert we had an apple tart. I'm not a sweets person but that was a perfect end to the dinner. The owner was there and chatted with us. Not a bad place, but there are better Italian options in the city. Came here on a Monday night and it was pretty empty as expected for a Monday. The place is small and probably not the best option for a large party. For the price of the entrees, I thought it was going to be a decent portion, but upon seeing my dish, I was legitimately concerned about whether I would have to go home and cook a little something extra. I ordered the oxtail tortellini ($16) and it was 3 large pieces of oxtail stuffed tortellini immersed with oxtail sauce. I was honestly pissed about the portion size at first, but the dish itself was good. The oxtail soup packed flavor although a bit salty. The tortellini was al dente and the oxtail inside was a shredded texture. If you get this dish, get yourself an appetizer as well. My friend ordered the fettuccini with shitake mushrooms which I thought looked good but she said was fine but not great. Best part of the meal was the Panna cotta! This isn't a full on meal kind of place. It's a true wine bar. You tell them what kind of wine you would like to have and they pick out the perfect one for you, and if you don't like it, they toss it and pour you another with no added charge, nice... The small plates we had were delicious too. They offer this amazing plate of sweet and spicy green peppers pan fried and then tossed with a crunchy salt, amazing! We also enjoyed the Frito Misto, lightly battered and fried calamari, jumbo shrimp and sage leaves, such a great dish. Tried the Polenta cakes with mixed mushrooms, the grilled octopus and the cod fritters. All very good as well. This takes the prize of being the worst Italian food in the neighborhood. If it was in Little Italy I'd be less surprised, but in East Vill where great restaurants pepper the block and for $$$ it is inexcusable. For my tortelloni in brodo I got 3 really tough, bland, thick dumplings in a store-bought tasting brodo. Chicken was severely overcooked. Confused how this place has a rating of 4+ stars. I've eaten at all the best (and not so best) Italian spots in nyc and this place just really isn't that good for anything. Ambiance: The setting of the restaurant was pretty disappointing when we walked in. It felt more like a tiny bar with some high top tables put in for dining. It smelled like a grungy old bar. The floors, tables, chairs etc were all old and run down. Nothing nice about the environment we were eating in Service: With poor ambiance, we were hoping the service would make up for it. Unfortunately that was a miss also. Our waiter was doubling as bartender and was totally not present. Hard to get a simple refill of water even. Not good service at all Food: Even with bad ambiance and service, really great food could have saved the day. But we didn't get that either. The food was not bad but it just was not that good compared to good Italian spots. We had 4 different pastas, the meatballs, the buratta and the octopus. Pastas were just okay, nothing to die for. Located on the far south end of the Lower East Side between Ave A and B lies a cozy Italian restaurant called IL Posto Accanto. If you want genuine Italian pasta and genuine NYC, you need to be here. Forget the cheesy touristy spots up in Midtown. The Lower East Side is where real NYorkers come to mingle. I came in late, actually just 5 minutes shy of the kitchen closing for the night. Still, my host was gracious enough to quickly allow me to order. Without even thinking I knew I wanted to try the Spaghetti Bottarga. Bottarga is fish eggs, when served over cooked spaghetti it has a very savory, strong aroma. I really love how they did it here, the spaghetti was al dente with a nice bite left to it, and it was served with the marriage between the fish eggs and a lovely olive oil and garlic sauce. And for dessert I went with my default, the classic Tiramisu. Everything about tonight was just superb. read more

Not sure why there's ANY negative reviews of this place. Came here today for brunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. First impression. Intimate family owned authentic Italian wine bar. There was 1 Italian woman behind the bar of the restaurant who knew literally every person walking into this place ! It was amazing. She would hug and kiss a huge majority of customers coming in for meals. And I completely understand why they'd continue to always come back frequent enough to form a friendship. I ordered the carbonara and my boyfriend got the rigatoni. The carbona was simple & booming with flavor. I would order this over n over again. But , lets talk about the rigatoni. The rigatoni was in a spicy tomato sauce it's bacon bits. .... now. I love a great tomato sauce, and THIS was excellent sauce. So much flavor with the right amount of kick. This was an extremely hearty dish and it was a kickass bowl of pasta. There's a bunch of Italian restaurants around this area which would probably make you skip over this one. LORETTA IS THE NEW KAREN This place is magic and the owners are FRONTLINE HEROES. In this incredibly challenging period for ALL OF US every day is an existential crisis for those in the hospitality industry. The owner / operators of Il Posto are doing everything they possibly can to continue to serve the most exquisite food you'll ever have while maintaining the joyous, life-affirming atmosphere that they've poured their hearts into for 25 years. BUT, as sentient and responsible humans their first priority is the safety of their clientele and their staff. To wit: I was there today and was subjected to the haranguing of this woman who promised to weaponize this platform against the owners for not condoning the irresponsible behavior of her party. I totally get that masks are hard to keep on kids but children are as much a vector for conducting virus as anyone. So, even the beautiful little boy running around mask-free was a threat to the rest of us. The owners are spending a ton of money to tent and warm the sidewalk (the "construction" Karenetta referred to was an electrician installing baseboard heaters to comfort the occupants of the mere SEVEN protocol-compliant TABLES they have to offer their customers) It would have been reprobate for the restaurant not to have asked them to sit down. This woman also announced that she was from the UWS and that "we don't treat people like this" - um, excuse me, but listening to this entitled white woman shouting down a black man was uncomfortably reminiscent of another UWS Karen threatening to call the police / write a Yelp review. Her attempt to take down this establishment with a nasty review is super DJTrump. Gross. Treat yourself to the delight of Il Posto Accanto and know that it's definitely not the UWS. read more

Brunch here was absolutely amazing! I've lived a couple blocks away from this spot for over a year and had never stopped in (my greatest regret in life) until a couple weeks ago when looking for a cozy escape from the cold. I did not expect it to be the best brunch (really more of a lunch) I've had in forever! For brunch you get a coffee, and entree, and a "brunch basket." In the brunch basket is one of the best pastries I've ever had. It was some kind of croissant type thing with nuts and chocolate and powdered sugar....I could have eaten like 5. I would go back for that pastry alone, but then the Amatriciana was so good too that I couldn't even figure out which I liked more! Also, the atmosphere and staff was so cozy and warm. You really felt like part of a family sitting there. I went back for dinner a few days later, and it was also delicious. However, the plates of pasta were really small. I know that's more authentic to Italian dining....but sometimes a girl just needs a huge plate of pasta, you know? Definitely a new fav in the area! read more

I love oxtails and know what a delightful taste the gravy gives off. Their oxtail pasta dish gravy had more of a bitter taste and was very watery. I understand that your food was made with love but not those oxtails. Did I mention that I know how to make oxtails, as I am from the island that makes it the best. I gave 2 stars bcas it was explained that their food is made with love. To replace my oxtail they gave me breaded chicken cutlet and that was dry and crispy, I liked that they butterflied it but said I needed a second opinion so I gave the rest to my son he said bcas he microwave it it came out dry, I told him I felt that way about it before the microwave. I don't know if I'm being over sensitive but the service went down after the replacement meal or maybe it was the fact that I went next door to order something for my mother to take home, which was nothing personal she loves lamb shops and they had it next door meanwhile this restaurant don't. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We ordered a vongole pasta and asked for some Parmesan cheese. The host refused to give it to us because it does not traditionally go with the meal. He was extremely rude and disrespectful. He made a scene about it in front of the whole restaurant and ordered us the check to leave. The whole staff was apologetic and other customers were completely in awe of his behavior. This is an amazing spot. I live around the corner and walk by this place everyday. Even on weeks days they have a good crowd. I stopped by last night for dinner and though I did have to wait 40 min/ hour for a seat it was worth it. The servers here are kind and caring. The guy, who I believe owns and runs the restaurant, was there working too. He seems to love his job and was speaking with all the patrons. The menu is unique and there are personal blurbs under several items giving you a bit more of the personality of this restaurant, the owner and the food. I found this very heart warming and also helpful. We ordered a bottle of wine, the calamari (which was truly to die for), and separate pastas. I got a a spaghetti style pasta with butter, lemon and sea urchin and it was amazing. I believe all pasta is made in house by a woman you could only wish was your aunt or grand mother. She was also present at the restraint speaking with guests. We also got the ricotta fritters for desert-- also delicious. A true gem in this city! read more

Loved the food here! Worth every penny and bite! We went on a cold winter day but their heated lamps and emergency blankets kept us warm so we were comfortable throughout our meal. Service was fast and friendly. Despite being seated outdoors due to Covid restrictions, the owner is so friendly to everyone around, it was a really great atmosphere to eat in. My husband and I started with the burrata special of the day and eggplant croquettes. Both delicious. The burrata on focaccia bread with fig jam was everything. Perfect harmony of flavors. For entrees we got another special rigotoni in genovese sauce, fettuccini ragu, spaghetti bottarga, and the special polenta with ribs. Each dish was phenomenal. Nothing tasted the same and we devoured every dish. It seemed like a lot of thought went into each dish to make it delicious and filling. I really, really wanted to like this place but it fell very short. As a long time local, these are the types of places that I long for and will frequent but I'm not sure I'll be back. The place is definitely cozy and has a neighborhood vibe. The wine list is expansive and the waiter was extremely knowledgeable on every random wine on there, and the menu at face value has variety and as someone who isn't really into pasta drenched in cheese, this place had a ton of dishes I wanted to try. The menu has a little bit of everything but based on portion sizes, you have to order a bit of everything. I fully understand fine dining, I fully understand not getting a huge mountainous plate of pasta. I didn't want an appetizer because I was ordering oxtail ravioli and figured it would be too much food. Also, based on the dishes' prices, I assumed that there wasn't a need to order an appetizer to leave even slightly satisfied. Boy was I wrong. The oxtail tortellini was good, nothing to tell visiting friends about, but it wasn't bad. It was a bit viscous because of it being a tad greasy. I know oxtail has fat in it but I still wouldn't expect the sauce to be slick. The worst part though, was that my nearly $20 plate of food had 3 averaged sized tortellini. Literally 3 - it was comical and we all laughed as it was served in a small appetizer soup place. My friend ordered the traditional red sauce pasta. It was fine, nothing anyone couldn't make themselves. We also ordered the meatballs to share... again, $17 for 3 meatballs (I guess that's the magic number). They didn't have a cook on the outside and were a bit salty. As for the tomato sauce, it was delicious but cold. My other friend ordered the filet mignon. The meat was cold, cooked way too much for it being in strips, and it was topped with a salad, which was dressed in olive oil. The oil then proceeds to drip down and completely saturate the meat. So instead of tasting a beautiful steak, your mouth is filled with olive oil. BUT here's the kicker. My friend was eating and tried to swallow and choked a bit. She pulled out a very long light colored hair. It was wrapped in the salad. Meaning it was in between the salad and the steak. The host came over and asked if everything was okay. He was incredibly nice and charismatic but it was kind of odd that he had to be adamant about telling us that none of the employees had long hair... The person eating it had black hair which was in a tight pony tail. Overall, you need at least 3 apps and 2 entrees to even reach the first level of satiation, so you're talking about $75 a person with drinks to enjoy yourself. We all pay that left and right in manhattan, but based on my experience, this place isn't a $75 a person place. It's average, and I would be more lenient in my expectations (except for the hair) if it were not so overpriced for what it is. read more

According to our friend behind the bar, Il Bagatto is focused on the food, and Il Posto Accanto focuses more on the wine (and serves smaller plates). Unsurprisingly, I prefer Il Bagatto. Food trumps all. I do appreciate that this a "Cell-Free Zone." AND they don't allow people to stand in the bar area. It's almost as if they care about their customers enjoying themselves; as if they don't want d-bags leaning over their customers, spilling wine on our shirts as they fumble to answer their Blackberries. Imagine that. Although the bartender is extremely accommodating, we opted not to drink wine, and as a result, I felt like a bit of a second class citizen. Generally, I would rather eat my meal and then go home and drink a bottle of wine/whiskey. (Recession...blah blah blah.) The bartender was doing his best not to show his disdain, but I have a keen, practiced eye for others' contempt for me. In any case, we ordered three dishes. 1. The meatballs, which are apparently prepared with a special blend of meat they grind themselves. They were tasty, but were a bit dry for my taste. Also, there were only three meatballs on the $13 plate, and I tend to think that $4+ for a meatball is excessive. 2. The spinach, served with pinenuts, raisins and parmesan was exactly what you would expect. I would've appreciated a few more raisins, as I found myself hunting for the little guys. 3. The cavatelli with spicy Italian sausage, peas and mushrooms. The sauce was so garlicky, and so good. With the help of a healthy bread basket, we CLEANED this plate. They could've served food on it to the other customers, and no one would've been the wiser. Out of the three dishes, this is the only one I would've ordered again. We originally walked in because of the wait outside Il Bagatto and Supper. And in the same situation, I'd probably give them another shot. It's a solid Italian option in a neighborhood filled with them, but probably more enjoyable if you are looking to drink wine. read more

Let people eat the way they want especially when they are paying!!! We asked for a sprinkle of cheese on a non-seafood appetizer and we were told "no" that the chef-owner only allows cheese on pasta. We are both Italian, so we are well aware of Italian food rules but even in Italy chefs are relaxing, creatively using cheese with fish and allowing people to enjoy food the way they want. 'Mind you, this wasn't even a fish item. The food was good even though the pasta course was minuscule as indicated in photo, the service was pretty good too. Like many NYC streets the block is kind of dirty with a couple of tables positioned 3 feet from the garbage. When you go to a restaurant part of what you're paying for is the experience. Granted COVID took that away. And as a result restaurants are bending over backwards to compensate by doing everything they can to please the customer. We are trying our best to support small local restaurants at this time. There are a lot of other options with larger portions of quality food and a kinder, gentler attitude towards guests. This is some of the best Italian Food in NYC. AND they have great service with a present and amicable owner. It's small and can be difficult for larger groups on weekend, but that's why I love it. It is intimate. You never feels rushed and they operate to serve the customer good food and drink. It is one of the few reasons I travel into Manhattan from Brooklyn.
