I very much appreciate a place that specializes in something and that's idonut. Their donut is light, fluffy, and surprisingly does not feel too sweet. I got their scrambled egg donut and the chocolate donut. The scrambled egg I wasn't the biggest fan of the filling (was cold) but the donut itself was divine. Also got the chocolate one which was light and airy and not too sweet. My friend got the teriyaki chicken sandwich donut and she really enjoyed it! It's not terrible, but if I waited any length of time for these donuts, I would've been disappointed. I fully anticipated a line upon approaching I'm donut, but quelle surprise, there was literally no wait today. I assume it was due to the cold, but I'm not complaining. You walk in, you're provided a clipboard with options, and fill it out before presenting it to the cashier. I really only wanted a savory variety, so I opted for the egg filled donut and received it quickly. I'm Donut ?'s name asks a question that implies that it might be pushing the definition of what a donut may be. While interesting flavors like Yuzu Champagne, Sake Cream suggest they are on the right track it is in the execution I feel they fall disappointingly short. What's worse is that most donuts are over $5 and topping out in the teens for donuts smaller than you will find typically at a Dunkin' shop. An unsatisfying ~3.5 inches. I will say they run an efficient ordering situation. They control the line inside and as you are waiting outside you are handed a clipboard to mark off your selections. Once inside, the staff reviews your choices to confirm or let you know something isn't immediately available (banana chocolate cream was stated to be a 30 min wait). Once confirmed, a cashier rings you up, you pay and wait. When handed my order I noticed that the 4 donuts in the box were on the small side which was a bit shocking that along with an iced hojicha came to nearly $40. These better be some amazing tasting donuts. They weren't. I appreciate the technique - they are supposed to be light and airy brioche style, but I don't believe they make for a good donut. They are very light - you could probably flatten one into paper sized thickness. The flavors were not that pronounced with the pistachio white chocolate actually having some because of the pistachios on the outside. The Sake Cream only had the flavor of chantilly cream. The Matcha could benefit from more sweetness. The savory donuts seem inventive until you consider the Mallorca that is popular in Puerto Rico which makes for a decadent and, when done well, a brioche style donut that rounds out their memorable sandwich. Stopped by on a weekend late afternoon. The line was only a few people, and they control how many people are in the store at a time. While waiting on line, you fill out a paper form with your order, which they'll confirm and you pay at the counter inside. They call your name when the order is ready. We opted to try 4 donuts. We originally wanted the seasonal Banana Cream Donut, but it was going to be a 30min - 1hr wait, so we swapped to another flavor. - Original: Texture was on the gummier side. Not airy at all. - Pistachio White Chocolate: had a good texture, but not much pistachio flavor. Mostly an icing/white chocolate taste, which is sugary. It did have a little bit of chopped up pistachios, so that was a nice for actual pistachio flavor. - Matcha: seems to lose the brioche texture, but better texture than the Original. Decent matcha flavor. It was not sweet at all, so you have to be into matcha to enjoy this. -Sake Cream: had no sake flavor. All I tasted was powdered sugar. Same texture as the matcha donut. The Hojicha (iced, 20oz) had a good hojicha flavor, and not too much ice. I enjoyed this the most of my order. I don't see the hype, especially for the price and how small the donuts are. For $4-$11 a (non-savory) donut, I'd rather hit up a chain donut shop for cheaper and bigger donuts. There are better donut shops around for as well. An incredibly popular donut chain from Japan, New York is definitely lucky to have I'm donut ? in Times Square! We tried to go right when it opened in the morning and there was a small line but it definitely moved fast. They have a good system worked out. The line dissipated later on so it might be better to actually go later in the day. They give you a paper menu while you wait and you can mark what donuts you'd like. They have a ton of different flavors to choose from. Some flavors are seasonal and some are location exclusive. In true Asian style the flavors are subtle and not too sweet. So if you prefer a sugary rich donut this place might not be for you. I personally loved the strawberry donut, the matcha cream donut, and pistachio white chocolate donut. Had a fun visit at I'm Donut. It was worth the hype! Definitely an IG ready hot spot. I would've loved to have had some extra time though in the store to peruse the merch wall but who are we kidding, obviously here for the donuts. I guess I'm just like the general population, ordered the favorites pack since it literally included every flavor I personally wanted to try, think classic, strawberry, chocolate, matcha. And I grabbed a few extras to share with the family like the caramel and glazed. Totally got sucked in and bought the cooler tote! The irradescent color just popped and they were kind enough to give me two ice packs to keep my donuts cool. It was still a warm September afternoon when I stopped by and I was not eating the donuts right away. Best part of this visit was seeing the assembly of workers doing their thing. I came in a Wednesday late afternoon and it was quiet. Upon entry you see a large open space with display of types of donuts and a table with order sheets. You look at the sample display and on a sheet wrote how many and what types of donuts. First of all the place is clean and bright with view of staff either packing or baking the donuts. There's a display of merchs you see and also can order. One novelty item that I almost brought if the price is slightly lower was a water bottle that's the size of your palm. I would say two full gulps of water. Not sure how useful but cute... I bought the OG nama, chocolate Nama, & caramel espresso to taste. All were pillowy, not too sweet & the cream was light. The only downside for me really is that it tastes like brioche bread that I didn't feel like is a yeast donut. Like it didn't love it. The place is well run with great staff. Went in here on a whim, drawn by the interesting storefront sign! They only allow a certain amount of people in there at a time but luckily we didn't have to wait outside long. We went inside and filled out a form on a clipboard with our orders. I guess you need to get there early somedays because they run out of donuts! Had the chance to try i'm donut ? during my time in NYC which is super hyped for its special light and fluffy Japanese donut dough. I managed to grab some donuts on a Thursday afternoon around 4pm and didn't have to wait in line, and they still had full stock. The vibes were extremely cute, white and clean, very instagrammable, with a lot of cute tempting merch! The donuts themselves were definitely pricy ($6-8 for specialty, $4 for plain). I tried the seasonal Sakura raspberry, original and custard. The Sakura raspberry was a bit too sweet with both a sweet outed coating and inside puree jam. The custard filling was one of the best I've ever tried, with super creamy thick texture and not too sweet. I also enjoyed the original as the special dough really stood out. Would I come here again? 4.5 stars for the delicate quality ingredients. I'm not familiar with I'm Donut (or donuts made in Japan) but I can see why they opened in NYC. It clear that technique shines here. Great job bakers! Note: Nama-style Donut recipe research says that the dough is made with mashed kabocha pumpkin (maybe the sugar/ferment is the secret?)...so is this a way to eat more vegetables? I was in the area around 5 PM on a Monday in January & decided to stop by. There was no line and about 3 customers inside. A slow but steady stream of customers trickling in throughout my visit. I got the Custard filled Original ($7). It was delicious! The filling reminded me of a choux creme puff filling. The donut was so fluffy & soft, with many holes from the starter. The associate said the dough is brioche. It was slightly yeasty & at the end had a hint of butter. It was literally the "healthiest" donut I've ever eaten. I'm not sure if it's a trend in Asia, but FYI, there is literally zero to minimal sweetness to the donut. People who have tried other flavors have either said that they tasted like nothing or they liked them a lot. Interesting ordering process - go in and fill out a paper with the item and quantity you want around a table and then you hand the sheet of paper to a staff member who checks your order. Then you wait on a line to hand the sheet of paper to a cashier who packs your donuts. Along the way you can view sample donuts. The most popular donuts from Japan arrived in NYC earlier this year, and I finally got to try them! When I went, the line wasn't too long. I happened to be in the neighborhood, so I decided to check it out. I was about the fifth person in line, though there were a few large groups ahead of me. The line moved quickly, and a staff member handed out order sheets for customers to fill out while waiting. I really liked this system. It helps people decide what they want ahead of time and keeps everything organized. I ordered the Variety Box (Set B) along with a limited-edition seasonal donut: Pumpkin Cheesecake. The donuts weren't overly sweet--just right. I loved how cute and petite they were! They are a bit on the pricey side, but honestly, they were worth it. The texture of these donuts was definitely unique and very mochi like which I enjoyed. Serving up "Nama" donuts, meaning "Fresh" or "Raw" in Japanese, you'll experience light, soft, and fluffy donuts in unforgettable flavors for both my sweet and savory girlies. I had to try their signature "I'm Donut? Choco Shell that was perfectly sweet, airy, and topped with cacao nibs. I tried to savor it, but i definitely bought another one after. I'm not much of a donut person, but I've heard so many good things about this spot that originated from Japan (and well, Japan can never do any wrong). Luckily, I came after the hype has died down a bit, so there was no wait at all. Once you enter, you get a paper menu where you can check off what you want to order. They also have every donut on display, which is great for my visual people. I have to say, the donuts are pricey starting at $4 up to $13 each, which made me decide to order the Box Set A ($34 for 6 donuts) instead. Everything was super efficient and quick as I was out of the door in minutes with a neatly packed box of donuts. From my box set, I enjoyed the nama donuts most, which are their signature classics. They're super fluffy and moist with the right amount of sweetness. I was surprised that I liked the cream ones too as they are well-filled with cream and held up well. Both versions in matcha and original/custard were delicious. The ring donuts almost remind me of mochi donuts with the flavors as well, but pretty simple. I heard a little about this place and it was en route to other places on the itinerary so it made a lot of sense to stop by. This is a Japanese donut shop and it is located in Times Square but maybe a block or so out of the thick of everything, so not terribly chaotic. We got there at around 11 am on a Friday morning and there was not really a line in the true sense of it. Someone greets you at the door, hands you a clipboard with the menu, and tells you to go left when you walk in. What that means is you choose what you want to order (mark it on the paper(s)) at the large centerpiece table to the left and hand it to one of the staff there who will then confirm with you before you're okayed for the cash register once it frees up. The nice thing about this is because there's always 2 people at the table, you can easily ask questions (though I can see it being a problem if there's a line). When we got there, no one was at the table, but two others were waiting for their order. So not bad at all! There are display donuts to the left of the table (but I ironically didn't see them until after I chose my donuts). They offer signature, unfilled donuts along with filled (for $3-5 more) as well as savory options (starting at $9, but most are $12) and ring donuts. I chose: MATCHA (signature) - this is an unfilled donut that is covered in a matcha powder. Perfectly sweet (that is to say it is not too sweet) and light, it was delicious. This was the last donut I ate a few hours later and it had thoroughly deflated to a much flatter version of itself, but still good. (Though you see why it is so light and airy.) PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE - A seasonal flavor! This is the second donut I ate, shortly after we left the store. It's quite good and adequately filled with cream. Tastes exactly like how it's named and also not too sweet. The cream for this is a little thicker but that's to be expected when it's cheesecake. SCRAMBLED EGGS - Seeing as this was supposed to be breakfast and I hadn't thought too much about what lunch would be, I opted for this. It does contain tomato mayo (which they told me contains no alliums - I don't eat alliums) but only at the top and is positively filled with soft, delicate scrambled eggs. Yum! I really enjoyed this! And I was pleasantly surprised I could have a savory option. So what are my thoughts? Their donuts are wonderful. They're light and airy, not greasy at all even when eaten later in the day. The flavors are very good, but not "too much" of anything. A good balance, I would say. If you do like things sweeter, this place is not for you... but I have to say I do love it. Staff are nice and very helpful. Place seems to be fairly clean overall, though I do not recall seeing a restroom. The place itself is brightly lit, welcoming, and minimalistic. You can see into the kitchen where they prepare your orders. It does take a little bit of time because though the donuts are made, they fill each to order and with how nicely they're filled, it is a process. They're carefully packaged in a box which is then placed in a bag that became my go to bag for other purchases the rest of the trip once I finished the donuts. The downsides? Probably that there's nowhere to sit inside. You only go in to order and you'll have to enjoy your purchases outside. We went back out into the Main Street and found some empty tables to enjoy (though it would have been nice to eat in there). There aren't any tables outside either. Also, my donuts were all powdered and they were a little messy. Thankfully, the wind helped remove the rest of the evidence as I walked around NYC... though they were a large factor in why I was decorated with evidence in the first place. The donuts definitely add up fast. Mine all totaled to almost $30 including a small tip and I didn't order a drink. That's enough for an actual meal plus tip (maybe even two meals depending on where you're going). So... not to most affordable, but if you haven't been, it was a pleasure to try and I can't say I regret it. Delicious and a place I can bring my husband who isn't amused every time I drag him to a new place to try something sweet. But most definitely not something to indulge in regularly unless you've got the means. I still see myself going again though. Decided to order 6 donuts: 2 Matcha, strawberry, custard, original, chocolate. There is no place to eat inside, purely purchase to go. Heard about the hype of this place when it first opened, and I never met a line I didn't want to get on lol. Timing never worked out and haven't had a chance to try these bad boys until our summer trip to Japan. I think we brought nearly one of everything in one of their Tokyo shops and had donuts for dinner. They were spectacular, pillowy soft and flavorful. Since we've been back, I've been jonesing for these donuts and finally made a trip to the time square location. I was bracing for a longish line, but to my surprise, we were able to walk right in. The selections here are much smaller than the Japanese store, but they were just as good. My personal favorite is the choco shell one, but the sausage one was a pretty close second. Arrived around 9 pm on a Thursday. There was a line, probably about a 15-20 minute wait. They ran out of most of their items, including their original donut. We ordered the matcha donut, matcha cream, espresso cream and pistachio strawberry donut. The donuts were light and fluffy, super easy to eat. Nothing like your typical donut at a regular donut shop. Our favorite was the pistachio strawberry and matcha cream donut. If you like sweet things, this is not the place for you. Their donuts are catered to people who prefer desserts that aren't that sweet. The donuts and the filling were not really sweet. The matcha and espresso donut had a more bitter flavor than sweet. I enjoy desserts that aren't too sweet so I found these donuts very tasty. The workers there were kind and attentive. My wife came home with donuts from I'm Donut? in Times Square and I will be honest, my first thought was that she had brought home mochi donuts. The texture threw me off in the best possible way. These are not your standard American donut. I'm Donut? is a Japanese concept that just opened its first location outside of Japan right here in New York, and what they are making falls into a category called nama donuts. Nama means fresh in Japanese and that is exactly what these are. Light, fluffy, almost cloud-like in a way that Dunkin and every other chain donut shop cannot touch. We tried three. The Pistachio White Chocolate, the Strawberry Chocolate, and a powdered variety. All three had that same signature texture, soft and airy without any of the heaviness you usually associate with fried dough. They tasted good across the board. Genuinely good. That said, if you walk in expecting mochi donut energy you might find yourself doing a quick recalibration like I did. These are their own thing entirely. Not better or worse than mochi, just different. A different kind of light, a different kind of soft. Once you adjust your expectations and meet the donut on its own terms, it delivers. Worth trying if you find yourself near Times Square and the line is not around the block.
