We had an excellent meal at Indian Oven Sunday night (5/29/2022). I had mild lamb curry and my partner had chicken/spinach curry. Both were delicious. Ordered shrimp vindaloo through Door Dash. Turns out they had run out of shrimp, and instead of calling to inform us, they decided to send chicken instead. I called to let them know that the order was wrong, but it was not a mistake. They knowingly made the decision to serve chicken instead. I am a pescatarian and do not eat chicken. They could have called, and I would have ordered something else instead.. Now they are 10 minutes from closing, and I am without dinner. I've been eating here for 10 years, and this is one of many instances of bad service I have received in only a matter of months. They've just lost a loyal customer. read more

Amazing Indian food! We came in to check out their newly remodeled restaurant and it looks great! We started with appetizers shrimp pakoras, chicken pakoras, and fish pakoras. Everything was seasoned perfectly and delicious! We also ordered paneer makhani and paneer burji, it was probably one of the best I have had in a very long time. The naans were made perfectly soft and buttery! On top of the food, the customer service was exceptional. We had a great experience and will definitely be back for more! read more

Quaint restaurant just outside the downtown area. Which is a great location, in my opinion, you don't have to fight for parking. We had chicken curry. I know that is basic compared to all of the wonderful food on the menu but I have a gluten intolerance. This dish does not upset my stomach. A unanimous decision from my husband and I. Totally gets 5 stars!! We went on a weekend (Saturday) night and had the buffet. They only have buffets over the weekend but you can still order off the menu. They have the amazing Brussels sprouts dish and the Naan bread is fantastic. Our favorites are the lamb curry, spinach, paneer curry, & Biryanis. The rest was delicious as well but those stood out to us. Tons of flavor and not heavy. The Serbia's great and the owners are hands on and friendly. Love that we can be patrons of a family business. I had one Stella beer with my dinner ($13.99 x2) and out the door under $40. I didn't expect to even find an Indian restaurant here in little Grass Valley. I find out it has the usual lunch buffet most Indian restaurants have as well as Fri- Sun dinner buffet. I do love buffets, cause you get to try a lot more item than you would otherwise. I went to a Chinese buffet here in town and now I'm at an Indian buffet. The buffet choices are all the usual ones you see at lunch buffets, with basmati rice, Tandoori Chicken and a Tikka Masala dish. There were a bunch of other dishes that I can't remember the name, but I didn't try. The quality was fine and on level with what you'd expect of a $10 buffet. I got my fill and I'd return again if I was in the area, but I don't think I'd make a special trip just to come here. If you're in Grass Valley and want a fast lunch that's not fast food, this is the place to come and spend about the same. No wait time for you food at a buffet either! read more

Beware: staff is unmasked. Food was okay. Rice was stuck together in clumps. Naan was badly burnt on one side and inedible. Spice level was inconsistent. It very much pains me to write this review, given the fact that I love this restaurant, but tonight I had an especially poor experience, I ordered the Tandoori mixed grill... To share between my good friend and myself after highly reccomending ordering food from here, unfortunately the food was garbage, all of the meat was as if it was cooked, frozen, and reheated, bone dry and tough as hell, they really skimped out on the veggies as well. Could be leftover stuff from earlier in the day or something left under a heat lamp for hours, they didn't want to make us fresh food as we ordered about an hour before they closed probably. I find that pathetic to be honest, and very disrespectful. That's how I feel after attempting to eat this food with my friend.. DISRESPECTED, as well as embarassed for giving my full confidence in how good it would be after having good experiences in the past. It's going to be hard for me to go back to India Oven after this. Nestled off to the right of a strip mall is a dark window where "India Oven: Fine Cuisine of India" is painted in shades of orange. Through the black-framed door is a burgundy/brown walled, low lit, decent-sized trapezoid-like interior. As you enter, you keep to the right next to the photo-laden wall - mainly of India's architecture - up to the cashier. To the left and past a waist-high wall is the main seating area consisting mainly of booths and a few tables with enough seating for parties of six or more. At the back is the main buffet line and a silver door that leads to the kitchen. The buffet line sports a variety of appetizers, stews, curries, meat and vegetarian dishes, and a few desserts. It was quick to sit and within a few minutes an order of naan came fresh 'n' hot. To the line I went. With a wide white plate I tried a bit of everything though I know not every name. Biryani, stewed chickpeas, tofu curry, vegetable pakora, goat stew, and chicken tandoori. All for a first go. Surprisingly, most things were a great hit even compared to most buffets. The rice still maintained a good amount of puff and didn't feel like it was left to dry at all. The stews all had tender vegetables and good amount of herbs and spices that were not overwhelming. The goat curry leaned more on a meaty goat stew with a hint of that...aromatic and sometimes pungent curry punch. The big hit was the tandoori and pakora. The chicken was simply fall-off-the-bone tender with a fabulously slightly sweet barbecued taste. The pakora - first time I've had it - was like a delightfully crispy fried vegetable mishmash mixed with plenty of savory seasoning, spice, and what could be and taste like mint. It could actually be a great way to trick kids to eat vegetables. Overall, pretty surprising in a good way. Side note: I noticed that the food got a regular checkup and occasional swap-out if it was deemed time, so nothing seemed to be sitting out for too long. India Oven is a pretty great surprise on the buffet and Indian restaurant front. Price wise, it wan't too bad considering the quality of the food there and I left happy. The only dishes I didn't like were simply due to preference (and that has no negative impact on them). Just a side note: the naan isn't complimentary but a paid side-item: not too bad of a gripe but the way asked before being seated made me assume it came with the meal. For the price and quality, it sits at a pretty good 4 and is worth a visit. If you haven't had Indian food, it's a good place to start and with the buffet it provides the opportunity to try a bunch of dishes. read more

I was just here day before yesterday. I thought, "Wow! Indian in Grass Valley? And buffet to boot? Let's try this place!". The buffet was $8.95 and for a buck extra you could get chai. I did not go that option, but who knows, could have been good. When I was there, they had the requisite tandoori chicken, another curry that used the tandoori chicken (which I assume had not been used up from a previous day - most Indian buffets that I have been to do this), chicken vindaloo, saag paneer, vegetable pakoras, a deep fried potato cake thing (aack, I'm terrible at remembering Indian dish names!) and another vegetable dish. There was naan too, but I didn't try that one. Okay - I've had better. Muuuch better. I must admit my faves were the chicken vindaloo & saag paneer. The flavoring for the vindaloo was yummy & the saag was not canned or frozen tasting. I was disappointed that there was not any dahl. I love that stuff. For dessert, there were some stale gulab jamun type balls - sans syrup. And they were cold. I think that was the number one major disappointment for me. I don't think I'll go back. Best Indian Food place that my wife and I have gone to. My wife was not so fond of curry due to bad recipes that her friends had butchered years ago. Even though i liked eating curry, my wife wouldnt want to eat at any indian places. But tonight she finally agreed to try it out. Im glad we came out here tonight. We were both overly SATISFIED. We were both impressed and surprised of how good the food was. My wife said she could eat this everyday. We had the Chicken Tikka Marsala and the Shrimp Tikka Marsala with Garlic Naan. The only restaurant in the entire Grass Valley, that serves Indian food besides BriarPatch Food Co-op! I have tried lots of food recipes in India Oven. It has managed to contemplate the taste of an American society thus, leading them to meet the expectations of their customers. I am from South Asian family, which makes me quite a littlebit expert in South Asian foods. One thing from India Oven I like is veg pakoda. And I remake it into a soup. One day, I had a horrible experience in India Oven. I got a lamb curry for my lunch at 11 a.m. a month ago on Friday. That day, I didn't even have to had dinner. I wasn't feeling like it. I couldn't sleep the entire night because of the fact that lamb curry had too much fats and oils, which led to an indigestion. I worked out the very morning at 4 o'clock. Didn't do anything at all. I didn't even had a digestion syrup "Pepto" at the time. The only option I had is to get it out. I did what I had to. It was necessary @that moment. But hey, from that day, I bought pepto and a backup for it, just in case. ***Be aware what you order! Trust your gut but not the influence.*** read more

Tip -- Avoid the buffet, unless you want quantity or variety over quality! Sometimes the buffet is okay at lunch, if you go early, and you choose carefully. But we've found that ordering direct off the menu gets you much tastier / fresher tasting food at this restaurant. We eat here fairly regularly. We like Indian food a lot and have been sort of avoiding this place because of several negative reviews. But we decided to (warily) give it a go and we're glad we did. We had great service and great food. Ample portions to boot! It's not a huge place but clean and neat. Both guys that served us were kind and friendly and made sure that we were taken care of. I am so sad. This used to be one of my go-to restaurants. I was definitely a regular even with the horrible service. The last time I went all of my favorite dishes were way too spicy hot for me to eat (except the Naan of course). When I told our waiter he was very rude and said that nothing had changed at all and there was absolutely no ingredient that was hot. My friend dining with me had the same experience. The plates were taken back to the kitchen and the waiter returned a few minutes later and said that he had tasted every dish we had had and absolutely none of them were hot as if (for some unknown reason) we were making it up. When I said that the food was hot to us and would he ask the chef if there was another dish we could try he left and didn't return. We paid for the Naan we ate, did not leave a tip and left never to return. So sad. read more

On the plus side they finally spent some $$$ on an interior remodel. New booths, tables, chairs and a paint job. On the minus the service is still h*o*r*r*I*b*l*e. Two servers to take care on the entire restaurant on a busy Thursday night. Wrong main course served, appetizers served mid meal, to-go packages and check took 15 minutes. No one to buss tables. Dinners walked in and turned around and walked out. Place was in a shambles. Customers left after having been seated, ordered and no food. This is a small town. Service like this will kill the place. Expensive buffet with very limited items, naan was good but took 20 minutes to get it after asking twice. Buffet was without salad from 7:30pm (closes at 9pm) until closing, asked for salad at 7:45/8:00/8:15/8:30 after many excuses and promises a plate full was delivered to our table at 9pm.
