Used to be amazing - now a total disappointment I've been coming to India Oven for years, and it used to be one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Mesa. After my most recent visit, I don't think I'll be back. We went about an hour after they opened, and the buffet was already in bad shape. The chicken tikka masala tray was practically empty, and we had to fish around just to find a few small pieces of chicken. The rice was hard, like it had been sitting for a long time instead of being freshly made. They also got rid of the carrot dessert that used to be on the buffet (one of my favorites), so even the selection isn't the same anymore. The drinks and desserts were just as disappointing. The mango lassi was chunky and weird instead of smooth and creamy, and the rice pudding was so thin and liquidy it was almost like sweet milk. The only good thing was the naan bread, which was still warm and tasted fine. The staff has completely changed too. The younger guy with the beard and turban who used to be there is gone, and now it's a bunch of older guys who don't seem to know what they're doing. They weren't outright rude, but they seemed confused and not very engaged, and the buffet clearly wasn't being watched or refilled properly. This is not the India Oven I remember. DO NOT GO HERE. I should've listened to the reviews. Went with a group of friends, there wasn't good quality food at the buffet. The food available tasted stale like it had been there for at least the entire day. Butter chicken had no chicken just gravy, chana was old and stale, pakoras were oily and tasted old as well. Not to mention the place was not clean at all. The plates, cups and cutlery were all stained and unclean, the floor was sticky. We ordered them for delivery and the food traveled well. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and the vegetable samosas. The chicken was so tender and the sauce was very flavorful. I finished the sauce with just rice lol. The samosas were good as well but very oily. The sauces they came with were good, I believe they were a tamarind sauce and a mint chutney. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!! We came back to India oven after our last experience six or seven years ago(?) We have been coming here for many years prior to that. The service started to go down as they got busier and more popular. The food quality started to go down significantly I have to think this was like 2016 or 2017. I started leaving the Yelp reviews for them because I updated good reviews down to fewer stars. It said as long as the service stayed the same and the food was as good, I was happy to share them getting more business. I updated and said things were lacking and detailed reasons, and then another three late years. I updated my review that they were indeed getting even worse and I wouldn't be back. Food quality, cleanliness, and service, not just price. We began going to another place just a half mile away south of the 60, it is smaller, but the food quality and cleanliness is so much better. We only came back to India oven yesterday because our other place (not allowed to name here) does not have a dinner buffet. And we were in a hurry. Almost every food choice was dried out and seemed to be left over from lunch even the rice I mean, who doesn't replenish rice? He brought out a small serving bowl of rice when a lady complained who came in after us. You could tell they did not want to replace anything that They didn't have to. It was 6 PM prime dinner hour. Thursday night I was shocked to see one table full only and said to my husband, this is not good. He decided let's try it anyway we each ate one plate and I was consistently worried about how I was gonna feel later. It was dirty inside and it makes you wonder if they don't clean the area the public can see what does the back room look like? I can stay with 100% certainty we will never ever be back. We will never ever recommend this place and we would be absolutely shocked if it's open for another year. We used to think that money must come from the catering and banquet side because the restaurant is absolutely unacceptable. Any of you that used to hope this place went back to what it used to be 10 years ago, don't bother. Thank goodness I did not get sick last night but boy oh boy it was a gamble. We didn't know this was buffet style, but it's our first time trying Indian food so that actually helped a lot. I expected it to be spicy, but nothing was too hot. We went around 8pm, so the food wasn't the freshest, but I know it would've been super tasty a couple hours prior. Very family-owned vibe here and the server was quick to help us. My Dad loves Indian food so we went in for Father's Day. It wasn't busy but should have been. They have some of the best Indian food especially in Mesa. The building is dark but cool inside. This was a pretty solid spot! I had been once or twice before but since it had been so long, I suggested this place. My boba sistah and I met up for lunch with her little one and I was ready for some Indian food. There were a few people there when we arrived around noon and more trickled in as the afternoon passed. It's a quick spot since you don't have to order and wait to be served. Basically, you choose your table and pick up a plate or two to fill up. We were given ice water and garlic naan, a great start. I was impressed with the variety and quantity of options available: quite a few vegetarian dishes as well. I really appreciated the mango lassi and chai, both of which were delicious. I enjoyed the food, especially the daal and the chicken tikka masala, a classic. I would probably pass on the chicken tandoori next time, too much work ;-). I'm usually pretty good at pacing myself and only getting what I know I can eat, but this time I overdid it. It might've been the spicy jalapeño and veggies that I grabbed to make my meal more "healthy", but know your limits folks. Didn't want to waste food. I have been coming to India Oven for years. I always loved this place, and my out of town friends would make this place a food priority when visiting. Unfortunately, it seems to have changed.. more so over the last year. I have come here less often once it seemed to change, but now it is not even comparable to what it once was and I'm not sure I would return. The naan did not seem very fresh, the cheese in the panang paneer was dry, and Gulab jamun dessert was not soft but chewy. I don't see the same friendly faces here, so I'm wondering if there is new ownership. Still nice people, but the food quality and flavor is no longer there. I visited Arizona to relive my years working at Intel Corp and had to stop by India Oven again. I got the lunch buffet and I have no complaints. The food was very high quality and the price was fairly reasonable. I can't remember for sure but I think a mango lassi drink was also included in the buffet price. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. Excellent food quality. I would try to get there when they open like I did for the freshest buffet though. read more

I went for the lunch buffet and had a little bit of everything. It was soooooo good! The mango lassi is a MUST as always. But everything was delicious. Not too spicy but really good flavors. The Naan was thin, crispy and chewy and just the way I like it. And they didn't skimp out either! I hate having to ask for extra naan when a place only gives you one or two peices. PURE REGRET! The worst $22.73 I have ever spent in my life! I had been a fan for years but it appears this place might be under new ownership and they let the food go to crap. Everything I had was bad! From the Tandori to the gulab jamun it was all lacklust and poor. The naan was the worst that I have ever had and it seemed to be stale and reheated in the microwave; absolutely disgusting. The service was horrible and I couldn't wait to leave. My mom loved this place years ago and suggested we try for dinner. They push the buffet, so we all did it. Several items were lukewarm or not warm at all, which can be common for a buffet. If you're looking for an Indian buffet, this is the one. The buffet is selection of dishes may be smaller than most but certainly not lacking in flavor or variety. The buffet has a lot of great vegetarian/vegan options and the tandoori chicken was not to be missed, either. They have a lamb curry and a goat curry, too. That's impressive because most Indian buffets only ever have chicken. The naan comes out fresh and hot. A server comes out of the kitchen with a small plate for each table. If you want more, you can definitely get it. The mango lassi is thick and flavorful. It's definitely not watered down. The rice pudding doesn't have nuts but you won't miss them. I came here once but didn't get the buffet and did a La carte which I wish I would have done the buffet because it came out nearly the same price. I came in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Service was top notch. For the buffet the big hitters are the chicken curry, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and goat curry with lamb vindaloo. Besides that they have a lot of vegetarian option that I'm not familiar with (I'm an Indian food noob). They also have some desserts, chutneys, and all you can drink chai tea with mango lassi. The servers are very attentive and come by with fresh garlic naan that's really good. I do think the tikka masala isn't as good as places I've had like a la carte, but it's not far off in opinion. The food quality went down and the prices went up but I still begrudgingly accepted it since I didn't know of any other places that did dinner buffets. When I was there a couple of nights ago, they increased the price to $25/person. At that price, I won't be back. This is my first time writing a review for a restaurant here in Arizona. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. The first issue we noticed was that the glass we were given was dirty, so we had to ask for a replacement. When we went to get food, most of the trays were nearly empty, so we ended up taking whatever was left. The food quality was poor, including the rice. To make matters worse, my husband found a small piece of aluminum foil in his food. Because of this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant, especially to those who enjoy Indian food like I do. When we arrived, they were really busy. Almost all of the tables were full. It was about noon or a little bit past that time. We were seated rather quickly. They had some metal trays, which would help hold in the sauce so that the sauce wouldn't run into all the items you put on your plate. They also had large plates and small plates for your food. They also had a little bowls for your food. I think most people picked up one of the large or small plates for the food. I didn't see that many pick up the metal trays for their food. I also didn't see that many people use the little bowls for the regular food, but I think they used them for the desserts. They had a non-vegetarian station with meat at the front. There were two vegetarian stations with only vegetables. They had one and a half dessert stations. One of the dessert stations was for cold desserts, and the other dessert station was for hot desserts. My favorite was the lamb or the paneer tikka masala. I usually really like the chicken tikka masala. I thought the chicken tikka masala was a little dry. It is my favorite dish at another similar restaurant. The first set of naan was delicious. The second set of naan was a little over cooked. It was burnt on the bottom. I liked how the first set was cooked perfectly so it was crispy on the bottom but not burnt. read more

I haven't dined here in years and had forgotten that IO is one of the few restaurants in the area that still offers an Indian dinner buffet. For $18.99 per person, this is a terrific value! We arrived 20 minutes after opening for dinner service on Friday June 9th. There were four other tables already seated and enjoying beer, wine, cocktails and food. With five servers working the dining area together we were all attended to expertly. As we know buffets aren't the ideal way to enjoy entrees at their best compared to ordering from the menu but for item variety and speed, this buffet won us over tonight. The goat dish and chicken curry were my favorites closely followed by Paneer Masala. My husband noted that the Tandorri chicken was moist that night. For us, it's been a challenge to find this popular chicken dish that is not served dry at other Indian restaurants. Delicious and sweet I found the Gulab jamun in rosewater syrup. (Soft Indian donut holes is how I refer to them. LOL) The mango pudding dessert one to indulge in as well! WAS HERE LAST ON 3/2/23. 3 STARS . So 3 years later and this place is just awful. Still filthy! Service is even worse than before. Went on a Friday afternoon and paid a premium: 20.99 pp. FOR WHAT?! Bins of buffet food with oil floating all over the top. The nastiest dark meat chicken in the butter chicken and the tikka masala. Super soggy vegetables. Aloo gobi that was mixed vegetables (heavy on the potatoes and NO cauliflower). Tandoori chicken smothered in onions and clearly not cooked in a tandoori oven. Rubbery lamb vindaloo. No chai tea. Nearly completely liquid rice pudding (hello, hello, is there any rice in here?) Floor guy (waiter seems a stretch) reprimanded my wife for getting up and pouring her own refill water, which is on the buffet!! Making it appear self service. Dude, maybe she wouldn't touch your water pitcher if you ever cared to provide any service. Watched him bus a table and never took a rag to the top. Gross! This place is so god awful. Came on a Sunday night at 6:30pm and it was a full house - they do have lots of seats though. Service was quick and kind. They brought us water and said we could get up and grab our food - once we got back there was already a plate of garlic naan on the table! They have lots of meat as well as vegetarian options. For meat, there was a couple chicken dishes, one goat and one lamb. Most was tender and flavorful, my chicken tandoori was dry though. There were more vegetarian dishes - I enjoyed the paneer masala curry and potato+cauliflower mix. For dessert, there was gulab jamun, rice pudding, and a mango pudding. Also unlimited mango lassi!! I wrote another review in 2017. It was a five-star one. But this time I didn't have such a tasty experience. I came here to India Oven tonight with a group of seven people that I hiked with. It was the hike leaders suggestion we come to India Oven after hiking. I headed for the lamb tikka masala but the lamb cubes were wasting the lamb because the meat was so hard and dry. The goat is a lot more tender and fall off the bone. And the lamb and cream spinach we're cold in the bin. I told the server and he stirred it with a spoon. I said the spoon stirring in there isn't going to tell you how cold it is. He lifted the spoon with a sauce and stuck his finger in it and then put the spoon back in the bin. He probably picked his nose with his finger before doing that. But I didn't say anything. He said that the heater was turned off and he was turning it on and harder. I didn't think any of the other flavors of the food was tasty enough to come back to India Oven. In 2017 it cost $11.95 and now it cost $18.95. But if you pay cash they'll give you 10% off. Nothing taste good to me tonight. The nasn was crispy only on one side I don't remember having none that was crispy only on one side and. doughy on the other side. Tonight I don't have a nice thing to say about the food but cold and unremarkable. But the service was really attentive. So instead of one star I'm giving two stars read more

Do NOT eat here. I am writing this after throwing up from eating at this restaurant. The restaurant was dirty and had a very dated, gross atmosphere. The food choices were poor, and the naan was burnt. But the worst thing about this place was how sick my spouse and I both felt after eating here. I had stomachs aches, nausea, and ultimately ended up vomitting. I'm not one to leave bad reviews, but I want to save others from the experience we just had. read more
