Part two of my adventure involves going to Infinity Auto Salvage to turn in the old car for cash. This junk yard also takes BAR approved vehicles for retirement. I previously wrote how bad Pick N Pull in Oakland was and decided to give these guys a chance. I called the owner, Mike the day before to see if he would be able to take my vehicle. I was previously burned by Pick N Pull because they fumbled with the paperwork and couldn't accept my vehicle for a very bogus reason. Getting here was relatively easy, the process was painless, and Mike is a very nice guy. He's been in the business for over 40 years and he made this process like a walk in the park. There was no problem with the paperwork and he was able to get a DMV transfer done without any hassle. In short, we walked out of the place with a check in hand. Mike is pretty old school. He's got an Apple from the 80s that's still running. I think it's pretty rad that he knows how to export that into Access nightly as a backup. Infinity Auto Salvage is one of the only few junk yards left. You have large and evil corporations that are driving these independent businesses out of the area. The level of service is much higher as well since there's more to lose. It's not easy getting 5 stars but I strongly feel that this place should get high marks for customer service and location. I don't have many other experiences with car retirement, but this one seemed pretty smooth. Even with what Mike said was a record number of cars surrendered that day, we still managed to get through the line and out of there with check in hand within 30 minutes. He also talked a lot about how his trade works, so we learned a fair bit about scrapping and the state car retirement system. Had a vehicle to retire after failing smog and needing extensive repairs that was worth more than the vehicle itself. Did some research and discovered the CAP program from the state that will pay $1,000-1,500 to retire a vehicle. I found Mike and Infinity Auto Savage from the list of approved buyers from the BAR and this was the closest location to San Francisco. This location was not located in the best area and was at the end of a dirt road near the Bay Trail with many RVs and homeless encampments. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Mike and he was working on a vehicle that was retired before we arrived. After checking the required documents, he inspected and tested the vehicle to make sure it was running. About 20 minutes we were out with a check and on our way. Mike is a very good person to business with and it's good to support small businesses like these instead of Pick-N-Pull. I also noticed they have an extensive inventory of parts available for those who rebuild vehicles. I called Pick and Pull and they don't take appointments - they're walk-in only and they told me the San Jose location (where I would have gone) is the busiest in the Bay Area. Infinity Auto Salvage is the only other place on the list that isn't a Pick n Pull and they take appointments so I called to book a time and made the drive up to EPA. This place is wildly inefficient. It took over an hour and 15 minutes to process 3 vehicles. The only employee working here had 4 different contractors come in and talk, which caused the employee to halt all work and speak for over 5 minutes with each. Glad we stopped by Infinity Auto Salvage today, as the process to retire my CAP vehicle was incredibly easy with Mike's assistance. It is located down a dirt road pretty far back, so don't feel like you are headed towards a dead end as you're driving down. Mike knew what he was doing, was courteous, and we were out of there in 20 minutes with check in hand. He also reminded me to cancel my auto insurance and made sure that I knew to turn in the appropriate form to the DMV. It was time to retire a car I bought brand new from the dealer in 1978. The engine, transmission, suspension, and body were all shot. Rust ate the metal away behind the rear windshield allowing rain water to soak the trunk. The car sat in front of the house and it was definitely an eyesore. People walked by shaking their heads when they saw the condition of the car. I don't know how the car passed smog in 2012 but I knew it wouldn't pass in 2014. I applied for the BAR Vehicle Retirement and received an acceptance letter along with a list of dismantlers that will accept the car. There was a Pick & Pull in Oakland and a Pick & Pull in San Jose. I called both locations and was told they will indeed take the car. I also called Infinity Salvage in Palo Alto and spoke to the owner. He told me to pick a day and bring the pink slip (title), registration, and the BAR Acceptance letter. I opted for Thursday and he gave me 10:30 AM. I left San Francisco at 9:30 and got to Infinity about 10:20. Mike was just finishing the paperwork for a vehicle that was retired. The vehicle's owner had already left. I waited outside for about 10 minutes and Mike came out and wrote down the VIN and the license plate number. He told me to park the car across the street. This is to ensure that the car will start and move. I gave him the pink slip and registration and we went inside. Mike was very nice. He is also very intelligent and funny. The whole procedure took about 20 minutes with paperwork taking up most of the time. The only mistake I made was calling for a cab too late. I had to wait for the taxi and the driver (a guy from India) couldn't find Infinity. I told him I drove from San Francisco and didn't have any problems finding it. He finally arrived but I was too late for the 11:40 AM Caltrain and had to wait for the 12 :40 PM Caltrain. If I ever have to sell a car to the state again, I will definitely go with Infinity Salvage. Mike made the process very simple with no hassles. Needed to retire our 2000 VW Golf and were scared off of the nearby Pick-n-Pull's by Yelp reviews that mentioned horrible service, long waits and dodgy locations. Encouraged by glowing reviews of Infinity and Mike, we decided to make the round trip from Corte Madera to East Palo Alto. Turns out the Wednesday-before-Thanksgiving Bay Area traffic makes a 2.5 hr round trip a 4 hr round trip. Regardless, it was still worth the trip. No line. Only wait was 10-15 minutes for Mike to finish up a couple tasks before processing our papers. Probably about a 20 minute process once he got to it. Walked away with our check and an inclination to write this positive Yelp review. East Palo Alto not so great, but location is at end of a long road that gets away from the people and ends near a wild life preserve. Bring your bikes/stroller and take a walk in the sunshine.
