I received my yearly notice from the DMV for my car renewal, this time telling me that I needed to take my vehicle in for a STAR certified smog check. In the past I used to go to a trusted place in San Diego when I lived in the area, but since I've moved to the OC, I needed to research local places to take my car. This came up with good reviews and I found a coupon for $23 off a smog check. I went during the week after work and one of the techs said he would be happy to run my car for the smog check. He invited me to take a seat inside the waiting room while he did the check, saying the test wouldn't take more than 20 minutes tops. He pulled my car into the service garage then had me fill out a form. The waiting room is small with a few chairs and a TV playing the local news. They still have magazines out to look at, but I ended up reading a book I brought with me. About 10-12 minutes later, my car was done and it passed testing. The tech said he wasn't concerned about my car not passing and said everything looked great. Checkout was easy and prompt - he even sent a digital notice to the DMV saying I had the smog test completed and it passed. With my receipt and report in hand, I was able to roll out of there and continue with my errands. Would come back here again if I needed to undergo another STAR certified smog test. read more

INSTANT LUBE & SMOG - 92869 I'm a long-time customer who is now searching for another oil-change service provider. My last three experiences have been bad. In one instance, the technician over-filled my engine by one quart. I don't know where they get their data on capacities but it does not align with the manufacturer for my vehicle (Ford F150 -- a pretty common one). Two additional times, with different vehicles, immediately after the oil change, pools of oil were left on my driveway -- assuming because oil was spilled on a skid plate or other area that would catch oil, then dumped onto my driveway. I hope it's not because of another potentially damage-causing over-fill. That has never happened in the previous seven or eight years I've taken my cars there for service. It's too bad to see a trustworthy service organization go downhill. read more

These guys were very professional and the price to get my car smogged was not even expensive. The guy that smogged my car a couple of days ago was super cool and they were just about to call it a day when here I come pulling up. The technicians told me "come.on up and he'd have time to do one more" which I kinda felt bad because I hate being that "One Guy" that comes into any establishment when they are just about to close. But Don (the technician) didn't seem to mind one bit. He was more than happy to smog my car. He was very welcoming and top notch customer service. I definitely recommend bringing your car down here for service. If I could give 10 stars I would. If you're brand loyal, they use Pennzoil petroleum products here. Today I got an oil change and a smog check. My car passed with flying colors and I am off to renew my stickers. Since I can remember, they have always had free coffee in the waiting room and I just recently noticed that they are sponsors of the El Modena Cheer squad. A business with corporate responsibility in mind. Awesome. All of the staff was friendly and awesome. The technicians will let you know if anything else needs to be done to your car, but they don't push their products on you. they just let you know and you can choose to do it yourself, take it somewhere else, or if they offer the service, you can purchase the service there. When I retired, I needed to establish a business relationship with a customer focused automotive oil and lube shop. As a former hobby automotive mechanic, I performed most mechanical and automotive repairs on my own cars, and some cars owned by friends. I was looking for a shop that could change my engine oil and filter, including transmission and differential oil, at dealer recommended service intervals, and perform vehicle operational checks for safety, service and smog. My first impressions walking through the door was how clean and orderly the shop was maintained. Met, Rick, the shop owner, Don, who specializes in smog checks and a couple of the mechanics, Marcos and Jose. Over the years I found the same Instant Lube team members performing service on my cars, and realized they must be well satisfied with their jobs and working conditions. That's the kind of people I want working on my cars. People I can count on to be there over the long haul. They went to work and completed the oil and filter change quickly and efficiently in about 15-20 min. including a safety inspection. It was a great start. Now, after 12 yrs doing business with Instant Lube, I'm continually impressed with their skill and efficiency. Several months ago, Instant Lube expanded their services to include automotive repair. So, when my engine service light came on, Don performed a diagnostic and discovered a problem with the thermostat malfunctioning. Consequently, I requested Instant Lube perform the repair, and they did so quickly, expertly, and efficiently. Was very happy with the repair work and look forward to using Instant Lube to perform more repairs in the future. I've referred many friends to Instant Lube over the years, and am delighted they've expanded to include automotive repair among their services. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!!!! Please understand that I always give an honest review about a business on Yelp in order to help others decide whether or not to utilize someone's services or not. Whether my experience was positive or negative, my feedback is straightforward and 100% honest. Before I give my review, if you've had a car that did not pass the smog test in California, you might understand that California's system for car emissions is seriously messed up. Quick Summary: I cannot speak about the oil changes from this business, but for Smog Checks, I can tell you that you will be sorry if you take your vehicle here and it does NOT pass the smog check. I don't know the guy's name who runs this place, but I can tell you that in my opinion, he is a "wannabe mechanic" who's frustrated because he's stuck doing smog checks for a living. He talks to you like he thinks he's a mechanic and he knows all about what's wrong with your car, and he'll tell you what you "need to do in order for it to pass" but I can tell you first-hand, after 4 months, 3 re-tests, some needless, expensive repairs, and some EXTREMELY bad advice from this guy, I don't know how he justifies the advice he is giving to people. He needs to stop "guessing" what's wrong and stop telling people what he "thinks" they need to do in order for a car to pass the smog test. If you are still reading at this point, I'll tell you about my experience with this place. First visit: Standard smog check given to my vehicle. It does not pass the test. Owner/manager asks me several questions, and his strong recommendation after declaring, "it's not ready", is for me to do these drive cycles, which are very involved (Google Drive Cycle). So, I proceed to do just that upon his "expert knowledge and recommendation". Along with the recommendation, he also passes along his diagnosis of my car's engine for all the reasons it didn't pass. He also tells me, "The state of California doesn't really care about emissions anymore, only that your vehicle's computer system is working properly". What? This was the first piece of bad advice from this guy. Second visit: After completing the recommended drive cycles, I take the car back for a re-test and, of course it still doesn't pass and was told by the owner/manager (along with a ton more of his "expert" diagnosis of my car's engine again) "Yeah, these things are hard to pin down as to exactly what the problem is, you just need to keep on driving it until it's ready". That is literally what the guy tells me to do. So, I take it out for 2 very long 75-mile drives. This was the second piece of bad advice. Remember what I said, this guy is a frustrated "wannabe mechanic" and he literally passes out bad advice like it's candy. In other words, he's a B.S.'er big time. Third visit: After completing 2 more monster drive cycles (that were recommended by smog station manager), I take it back for a re-test and of course, it still doesn't pass. His recommendation is to take it to a mechanic to have it repaired. He also tells me that since it hasn't been able to pass the smog test, I can also take it to what's known as a Smog Referee. Now this is important because HE DOES NOT TELL ME THAT I NEED TO TAKE IT TO A CERTIFIED REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. HE ALSO FAILS TO TELL ME THAT I NEED TO SPEND A MINIMUM OF $650.00 IN REPAIRS TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BY THE SMOG REFEREE. That's a pretty important piece of information, don't you think? So, after printing out a sheet that tells me exactly why the car is not passing the test, I take the car to my regular mechanic who has worked on my truck for years. My mechanic keeps the car for a week and a half, and does a multitude of tests and repairs at the tune of $316.00, but can't guarantee that it will now pass the smog check. In the meantime, I reach out to the Smog Referee where it was then that I learn: A. Any repairs to the vehicle must be done be a certified smog repair station B. I must spend at least $650.00 in repairs in order for a smog referee to look at the care C. If the referee determines that it won't pass, they will give you a One-Time waiver that is ONLY good for 2 years Never once did the manager of the smog check station mention ANY of these facts. Fourth and final visit: Deciding that I would take it back one more time to see if fate has been kind to me and maybe, just maybe, it will pass the smog check. When I take it there, the same manager puts his little device on the truck and quickly tells me again, "Nope, still not ready". No shit Sherlock! I tell him that I've done everything I can and everything he told me to do, in order to get it to pass the smog check. He then asks me, "Well, what have you done to get it to pass?" I tell him, "Everything that YOU TOLD ME TO DO". I also mention that I wished he would have told me all the details of the Smog Referee, and this was the final blow which lead me to write this review, he has the nerve read more

I just got my first car and went here to have my oil changed. Found a coupon in the mail for a $25 15 pt. oil change, but I had left it at home. A super friendly and polite mechanic told me his boss was very strict about having the physical coupon, but I kept at it for a second and he very kindly suggested that he could try to convince his boss. A second later he comes back and said he could take care of it for me. So exciting!! Anyway, I went and sat in the waiting room. It was pretty clean, nothing fancy, but had coffee and the tv playing. These guys are amazing! I would highly recommend them to anyone I know. They are very honest and did a wonderful job... and even answered all of my silly questions. They have a customer for life! A few months ago I bought my son a 1997 Ford F150 and needed it smogged. When I initially brought it in, it failed the smog test. I was surprised because it had been smogged not too long ago. No offense ladies, but I am one of those ladies who knows nothing about cars... so I figured something had happened in the past few months to cause the truck to fail the smog test. At this point, I would have gladly paid to have the 'problem' fixed, but Don said he didn't think that was necessary. Don asked if I had recently changed the battery. I had. He explained that there is a sensor that is reset when you change the battery. Actually, he said there are two... but I digress. The likely problem was that there weren't enough miles put on the truck since the battery change. He suggested I drive the truck to reset the sensor. I tried this, but it didn't work. I was reluctant to continue to drive the truck because the registration was expired and who wants a 'fix it' ticket? I asked if there was an alternative option. We agreed that an hour or so on the rack should solve the problem. It didn't... but Don didn't stop there. He drive the truck several times in an effort to get the sensor to reset. After driving all over Orange County, the sensor finally reset itself and the truck passed the smog. And while I would have gladly paid more, Don only charged me the original $95 we agreed on (to put the truck on the rack). I am done taking my vehicle to this place for an oil change. I explained the last time I brought my car in that oil dripped everyday. This does not happen when I take my car into the dealership to have the oil changed (for less money and inconvenient). Took my car in yesterday, they said they wiped it down and if I see any drips it would be water. Pulled out of my garage this morning and a puddle (yes a puddle!!!!) of oil is on my garage floor. I drove up to the mountains this morning and got out of my car and all I smell is burning oil. The guys that work at this place are friendly enough (that's the 1 star). This is the only place I always take my car to get my oil changes and smog checks done. The guys are nice and very professional. Other places have those $15.00 oil change deals but you have to wait an hour or more for it. I'm always on the go so that is why I LOVE this Instant Lube place. I don't mind paying the extra $10 bucks. They are SUPER FAST. Oil changes take less than 10-15 minutes. Smog checks takes them about 20 minutes. Their the fastest place in town. read more
