Interlocks is great if you book with the right person. If you have curly hair you must book a deva cut and color with Melissa. She has studied curly hair in NYC and is a true master at it. . Vera is the absolute best person to book if you want a Brazilian wax. She makes you feel relaxed and knows how to reduce the inherent pain associated with the procedure. I love the fact that the salon doesn't charge you for canceled appointments. Also the hours are extremely convenient. Most of the people working there have stayed 10-20 years which speaks volumes of the manager. I would recommend the salon but do your homework first and make sure you are booking with the right person. read more

This place appears to be really a salon, NOT a spa. While celebrating a milestone birthday for a friend, we booked spa treatments, she a massage and myself a facial. First the positive, the salon is really nice inside the waiting/check-out area. Lots of great products to look at (scented candles, tanning lotions, cosmetic bags) while you wait. They have a great coffee/tea counter that you can help yourself to also. Here's where things start to go south...I checked-in 45 mins. before my app., thinking I would fill some form out, change into a robe and sit leisurely in a relaxation room and chat with my friend when she arrived. Yeah, no such thing happened. I got checked in and was then completely ignored, no robe, no relaxation room offer AND WAS TAKEN INTO MY APPOINTMENT 15 MINS. LATE!!! My friend was taken on time, but she was not provided a robe or an offer to sit out of the salon waiting area to the relaxation room either! The receptionist didn't seem to care or have a clue as to why I was still sitting there until I had to get up and ask another employee to find out why my app. was running late. Okay, running late can happen, but we had others in our group that we needed to meet up with for dinner so time is important. The receptionist didn't even know they had a shower, changing area that we could use to clean up before we headed out to dinner!! Must be kidding me! I can see why she forgot about it, because it basically was a back room, an afterthought....oh, we'll offer spa services but wait, we forgot people might want to clean up before they head out! This is why I say it's really a salon, NOT a spa. My therapist made up for the lost time and the facial was "interesting". It was not like any facial I had ever received. I'm used to slow, methodical pampering with facials. This was like a deep tissue massage on my face. Lastly, the price of the facial was far more expensive than I have paid in traditional spas -- "real spas". I have paid far less and received much better facials at other places. I cannot comment on any other services here. It appears to me the hair and make-up services are what people go here for. You've been warned. P.S. Management might want to think of cleaning up the white chairs in the lobby or replace them with a darker color -- dingy looking. read more

I travel an hour to frequent this salon because of the expertise of Vicki Quist and a couple of other excellent people who have taken care of my very curly hair. Now she does my entire family. The staff here is far more knowledgeable than in any other salon I have used, and expert at dealing with hair that doesn't fit the suburban Boston mold. I will never forget Vicki saying she was EXCITED to see me (really, my hair) walk through the door the first time--rather than terrified, as has been my experience with other salons in the past! read more

I've lived in the area for 12 years and have visited Interlocks many times and have seen a few stylists. I'm a former stylist myself and know what good service at a salon should feel like. While, the physical atmosphere is GORGEOUS and the location couldn't be better, the staff are quite simply seem snobby, disinterested and entitled. I have never felt welcome or appreciated as a client and for the prices they ask, every customer should be treated like gold, but they are not. I have long since given up on Interlocks. They have PLENTY of great competition around...they seem to have forgotten that. read more

I moved to Newburtport about 6 months ago so of course I was in need of finding a new stylist. My future mother in law has been going here for quite sometime and recommended a stylist by the name of Kelly. A stylist is like a girl's best friend so you never know what you are in for but I have to say I have been very pleased thus far. Kelly is professional, knowledgable, talented and always entertaining when I go in after a long day at work. I am always able to get an appointment and everyone I have interacted have been very friendly. I would said they only downfall is the back sink station area could use some better decor, more spa like. (although there is a great water view); and possibly some neck pillows too, only because for us gals who take time processing the sink is not always the most comfy place to hang out for several minutes. Overall I don't have anything negative to say and can't wait till my next appointment with Kelly. read more

Simply put, I received one of the best pedicures ever! The manicurist was very friendly and welcoming, made me feel right at home. The desk staff was great on the phone & great when I walked through the door. This was my 1st visit and certainly won't be my last. They have a great selection of product as well. They are on the higher price point for the area but really worth it. The parking is not abundant but it's the nature of the beats in downtown Newburyport. read more

i dont get my hair done very often, but when i do this is definitely my new salon. gorgeous interior, polite stylists who actually know what they are doing ( which is SO hard to come by these days) and mid range pricing! i've gotten a cut and two colors there so far and they've all turned out great. they always discuss at length ( hehe) all of my options and really make sure i'm informed before they do anything. the girl who usually does my hair is a beautiful tall platinum blond, wish i remembered her name because she's great! i dont trust my hair to a lot of people, but this place has definitely earned 4 or 5 stars in my book read more

I had a clinical facial a couple of days ago. Vera did a terrific job. Facial was personally customized and professionally executed. I have acne and I'm in my fifties and she has made my skin feel so smooth and the acne has cleared. The cost seems justified because compared to a dermatologist the results are equal or better. I've been going to Interlocks for the past year now, only for haircuts. I'm one for very layered short cuts and it has been IMPOSSIBLE to find someone who can handle my crazy thick hair. Luckily, I found Sherise. She's new to the staff and is an absolute Godsend with short hair. I've been seeing her since her apprenticeship and couldn't be happier. She's very nice to talk to and listens superbly to what you want - she also has an excellent memory! All praises aside, I can't give Interlocks 5 stars. While my cuts are not too expensive (I NEVER get a blowdry). I'm reluctant to get color here. The price tag is very intimidating. read more

Enjoyed a work outing here today for Nurses Day. Staff was wonderful, they were friendly and kind. They did a great job with my massage, manicure and pedicure. I was a bit disappointed with the relaxation room, the decor was not so relaxing. I would have expected the massage rooms to be more spa like and less clinical looking. It could have used a water feature and some art work on the walls. During my massage I could hear staff close by chatting, which made it hard to relax. Overall a nice place, but I would have expected better in a high end town like Newburyport. read more

I went to interlocks to have my nails done, tips with gel. I have them done plenty of times and I know what to expect. After 2-3 DAYS they began chipping and falling off one by one. I then went to another nail spa to have them fixed, they were shocked with how they were done. I have had my hair done in the past as well, and after waiting to be called in(almost 25 minutes) the women walked her prior customer to the front and talked with them for another 5 minutes or so..... finally said " oh, i guess i should bring my next customer in now" read more

while your staff was incredibly kind and attentive, I have never been so disappointed with a hair service. i came in to have my hair dyed back to its natural root color which is light brown and received a dark brown basically black with red tint. i left your salon angry and incredibly disappointed that i spent so much money to leave so upset. i returned the next day to have my hair lightened and highlighted to get closer to my normal color. shockingly enough i might as well have flushed my money down the toilet once again. my hair was barely lightened and the highlights hardly noticeable. therefore i will never recommend your salon to a friend and i will never return. i will also not hesitate to tell people to not use your salon as well. if i wanted a terrible color job i would have spent $10 at cvs instead. sincerely a very angry borderline red head. read more

I am new to the area, so of course I check out all of the reviews and found this listed as a highly recommended salon. Honestly, I'm not sure how. The sticker shock alone of a $200 cut, color and blow-dry was outrageous. The staff was cold and judgmental. Combine that with the fact that I got home and realized that my color was spotty - entire chunks of my hair had been missed, and you could clearly see the line where I had previously had my hair colored. That is unacceptable for such an expensive cut. So I called, and they promised to fix the color free of charge (as they should). But when I showed up at the appointment time I was made to wait for TWO HOURS. You would think that they'd be extra conscious of me as an already disgruntled customer, but they were not. Even after all of that, my color is still a mess (uneven roots, STILL a line where the old color used to be) and I resorted to an at-home treatment instead. I would never go here again. read more

I left looking the same as when I walked in, and was sent on my way when I was clearly displeased. The manager was not kind when I politely expressed my concern with my experience. Reviewing poor service in hopes Interlocks will improve it. The mani/peds have become sub par. This is supposed to be the "good" place in town, where you're supposed to be able to get quality. It was far from it. The place is nice, we all know that. The people are nice. This is not even about prices. The manicures were both done so fast, with little work done to shape and clean up my cuticles -- which is the problem I go for... The polish that's supposed to last for 7-10 days both times was chipped within 24 hours (on a few not all nails but within 2-3 days most were chipped to the point they looked awful). I had a pedicure as well - and while the people were nice, I was surprised how inexperienced they were and how little they did. I left with calluses even after I asked her to be sure to smooth the problem areas (again, why I go). A few years ago I went here for these and it was far better. read more

Last month, I went to Interlocks for a full highlight. I have been considering writing this ever since. While there, the "master stylist" acted very disinterested and bored and even after telling him what I wanted as well as what I didn't want for results (which have been routinely achieved at the other salon I have gone to for years), and having to tell him as he failed to ask what I was looking for, I nonetheless ended up with exactly what I did NOT want (very brassy-looking) and, as I hadn't scheduled a blow-out due to the cost of the highlight ($149 plus the obligatory 20% tip for a whopping $175!), i was left to leave with dripping-wet hair with not even so much as an offer to dry my own hair with an available dryer (there were many as there was only one other customer in the salon and it was a Saturday morning). The kicker is, I have extremely easy-to-highlight hair; as I'm often told by stylists due to it's natural dark blond color. This stylist, though, only managed to leave it looking reddish (even after I specifically told him I didn not want red tones but rather light blond) and now, one month later, it has returned to it's natural color as he didn't want to use the heat lamps and only resorted to doing so for a few minutes as he said the top "just won't take". So, $175 dollars and much dissapointment later, I write this because I just can't seem to dismiss the feeling that for hair, Interlocks is not the place to go given that I paid for a simple service provided by a "master stylist". In the past, I have had both a manicure and a pedicure at Interlocks with good results but I definitely will NOT return for hair styling. There are too many other salons who don't charge as much and who provide much better customer service. I only wish I had used the $65 gift certificate I'd received for Mother's Day on a pedicure or a couple of manicures and not wasted it and the rest of my money on one of the worst highlights I've ever received. read more
