I have been visiting the Fancy Salon for over a year now and LOVE, love, love the results I get with my ever-changing hair colors and styles. I have had red, brunette, highlights, platinum and various lengths and colors added for pop. I have worked with Lu, Jen, Jenaya, Brenda, Sylvia and Alicia. Lu is a master with a razor cut. Jen does fantastic bobs and layered cuts. Brenda and Alicia are amazing with bright colors. Jenaya is a generous perfectionist and Sylvia gives the most amazing scalp massage. They are amazing!! I have observed some incredible results walk out of the salon, and you really can't go wrong if you have open communication and trust any one of these experienced professionals with your tresses. Okay so the reviews on this place are fantastic, right? I don't want to rain on everyone's parade but I have learned my lesson never to go blindly into a new salon without actually calling and speaking first to the person who might be doing my hair and make sure they are actually skilled/trained/comfortable with how you like your hair done. I have reasonable dark brown hair that I dye the base blonde and foil in high and low lights. I have been doing this for several years. I just moved here and read the reviews for Lu, thought it would be great..and she is, she's very nice and I am sure good at what she knows how to do....But bleach and blonde is NOT what this girl knows how to do. She strictly uses high lift and that is about all she knows. I even had my stylist call and walk her through my difficult hair. What a waste of time and money...My hair looked EXACTLY the same as when I walked in...dark roots and all...Now the her credit we did discuss my expectations and I knew it would not be the same, but I also expected my stylist to be a competent person. Totally wrong on both accounts. So my advice, if you are blonde, walk, no, run as far away from this place as possible, and if not, then please call and ensure the person is comfortable with your hair. read more

As I walked in for the first time, I noticed the words above the door-- "love your hair"-- and I immediately told Heather "I really don't love my hair." By the time I left one hour later, I did. Heather cut my hair (which is annoyingly curly, trying to grow out, boring, etc) really well. She gave me bangs that I loved immediately (who ever loves their new bangs on the first day?!), cut my hair with the curl, and gave me a slew of tips for helping it grow out in a healthy way. Cute salon, great products and friendly staff, but I am sooo dissapointed with my cut. Went in with mt hair about 5 inches past my shoulders, told the stylist I liked it long just needed layers and shaping, a cooler look. I feel I clearly explained what I did not like about my past few cuts, but I still ended up with above the shoulder, straight across bob, not a long layered shag. Its a nice cut, but better suited for a proffesional woman in her 40s, definitely not me. It was styled in a way I would never do myself, I think she knew it was too short so she really boost up the volume and curl, maybe so I wouldn't notice? I know I should have said I was unhappy when I was there but as nothing could have been done to replace the length, I paid too much and left. I am ok with growing my hair back for the next 6 months, just wish I could have found a salon that I would be happy to return to. read more

She has some amazing deals right now so snag them while they're available! Her facial room was extremely relaxing and I felt well cared for in her hands. She was very patient with my unknowledgeable questions about skin care, and NEVER made me feel rushed even once during my visit. The ONLY two cons: Lack of parking...there was a parking lot but it was completely full and I had the "PLEASURE" of getting towed (& calling 3 tow companies to find my car...and walking 25+ blocks...and wasting 200...well you know) during my service....so park carefully. Second, the edgy & funky salon area has some pretty loud music blasting that goes right through the walls, so above the peaceful spa like music in my room, I heard some heavy metal and rap loud and clear :) But it really wasn't a huge distraction. Okay, so I moved up to Oregon a few years ago and have been searching for a stylist ever since. l am extremely indecisive so yelp helps me A LOT. I was making my way down the list of salons, Fancy was next on my list but I somehow strayed from the list and ended up at another salon that had also received great reviews......DISASTER!!! I ended up with the most awful untoned bleach chunks at random all over my head, I can't even explain the colors that were going on, it was terrible(not to mention I didn't even see the extent of the damage until I got home since the girl who did my hair was running late and didn't even show me the back, yikes). After crying for hours and trying to see if there was any possible way I could style the fried yellow/orange mess(with no success) in a way that was halfway decent, I called Fancy Salon. Thank goodness for BRENDA!!!! Brenda is awesome, she is so talented and sweet. I never felt like she was rushing, in fact just the opposite. She took the time that was needed to fix a mess that someone else had made, and I felt so comfortable and welcome at Fancy. Great, great, great salon! I have to say, being a huge Flight of the Conchords fan, when I walked up to the salon and saw the "Business Time" open sign I had a good feeling. I've had Kelsea cut my hair a couple of times and she always does a fantastic job. I have pretty long hair and she is a pro at layering. I'm very gun shy about haircuts, I've had some really, REALLY terrible hipster-mullets in the past. Brenda took the time to ask me about my hair, how much time I wanted to spend doing it, what kind of styles I wanted to do, and then walked me through what she was going to do. She was super nice, and didn't make me feel silly for bringing in a picture of what I wanted. I will definitely be back to see her. She did a great job layering my curly hair that I often wear strait. The salon was nice, but not at all snooty. This I appreciate after a past bad Aveda salon experience. They also have online booking for hair appointments which is SUPER nice when you often have busy Saturdays like we do. man, i hope i don't come to regret writing this - i like being able to make appointments the day before. but i guess it's just adding to the many other stellar reviews, anyway. i've gone to lu twice now and each time was great. she is remarkably nice and has done just what i would have wanted if i had known what i wanted. the cuts i have gotten are versatile, so my hair doesn't look insane if i go to bed with it wet or something. also, cuts are relatively inexpensive, which is nice. the space is small-ish, but doesn't feel crowded at all and there's lots of light from the large windows. there is always interesting art on the walls and last time i was there, a cute fluffy pomeranian on the couch. value-add! read more

I have really curly hair. As a newcomer to Portland, and a girl who has had a slew of bad hair experiences, I was super nervous about finding a new salon. Jen changed all of that. Never have I had a hairdresser handle curly hair with so much confidence. She was friendly, kind, and knew exactly what I needed. Yay! The cure for the common hair salon! In past experiences I have always felt at the mercy of the person with the scissors. I even put up with my colorist being late to appointments just because I couldn't find anyone better. I'm so grateful for finding Fancy Salon! A year ago my hair was somewhat damaged from surfing, sun and saltwater. I tried taking matters in to my own hands by buying a box of home hair color...holy god that was a mistake! Needless to say that when I walked in the door Sylvia had a challenge on her hands. I was very self conscious and embarrassed of my attempts at trying to 'fix' my hair but Sylvia made me feel incredibly comfortable. I felt welcome right from the start. We talked about the process for correction and she really listened to all my concerns. She gave me some great feedback on what she thought would look good and never made me feel bad for making a mistake. Sylvia has a wonderful intuition and sense of a person's style. She takes in to consideration what haircut will look best with your face shape and what tones will bring out your features, etc. She covers all the bases. What a relief! By the end of the appointment we were laughing and telling stories and I walked out of Fancy! with a huge smile on my face. Now I receive compliments on my hair all the time and I always look forward to seeing Sylvia. I recently moved to Corvallis to attend OSU but I haven't even attempted to find a salon in Corvallis because the drive to Portland 110% worth the experience I get with Sylvia. I've only been in Portland for a few months and decided that to celebrate the coming of spring, it was time to whack off a few inches...or eight. Lu was professional and friendly and made sure I got exactly what I wanted. Sitting in her chair was like chatting with a friend you'd known for years. She took my sad Zooey Deschanel impersonation and turned it into an adorable bob that I LOVE. She made sure I was on board every step of the way and showed me how I could get the best look from my hair-- with minimal products and time spent on my part. We filled the entire hour of the appointment with small modifications and getting everything juuust right. I made the reservation on impulse the night before my appointment, and I loved the ease of the online reservation system. Two thumbs up for convenience! I'm the kind of person who is so picky about who touches my head. After a friend who was supposed to cut my hair flaked out on me, the night before my son's birthday party I immediately hit yelp looking for a great hair salon. I came across Fancy - and called at like 8:30 in the morning hoping for some kind of cancelation, even though I knew it was a long shot! My phone call was returned right away by Alicia saying she could get me in and out before 1:15 for an eyebrow wax and hair cut. Naturally, I was stoked my son's party started at 2:30! Joni did my eyebrows - she was really sweet and personable and did a great job, no awkward small talk just a normal conversation. Alicia did my hair - she asked great questions, and really listened and did an awesome job -My hair gets really curly and hard to deal with, and she understood exactly what I wanted. Jenaya is fabulous. I had a bad experience with another hair dresser who claimed to know about curly hair but who, in fact, didn't know a whole heck of a lot other than how to butcher it. Oh, and the color...Yikes...Cut to me finding Jenaya. She is smart and extremely professional and, most importantly, she LISTENS. She has the skills but she is a good listener and she genuinely wants you to be happy. I've finally found a stylist, Rachel Peterson, who 'gets it.' It's such a relief when you find a stylist who can interpret your vague ramblings about 'layers' and 'vintagey bangs' and turn out an amazing cut. The first time she cut my hair, I simply told her I wanted to take off some length. She listened to what I wanted and cut my hair with confidence. The end result was more volume than I've ever experienced and a cut that was easy to maintain and grew out nicely. I just saw her for the second time and yet again, she did an incredible job. I have fine hair and for some reason, bangs are really hard to get right on me. Rachel knew exactly how to do what I wanted and magically gave me these great bangs with just a few cuts. She will also make sure you're happy with the final look. I also like the vibe of the salon and the location. It was easy to find street parking but there's also a small parking lot in front. The salon is cute, comfortable, and everyone working seemed friendly and down to earth. read more

I used to go to Bishops Alberta for several years, until I had to endure 3 different hairstylists leaving the company for various reasons (moving, going to school, etc). I was devastated when I found out my most recent hairstylist left. I felt betrayed, like I just broke up with a boyfriend. After the heartache, I decided to move on to a different hair salon where they did not have as much turnover with their employees. I did my Yelp research and found Fancy! Salon. Boy was I happy. I scheduled an appointment with Sylvia to get a haircut and partial highlights. Sylvia was very nice and down to earth, offering me water/tea/magazine while I was getting my hair done. Syvlia first started with asking my what I was expecting in terms of cut and color. Since I have dark asian hair, I was concerned about doing highlights that would make my hair look like it was fried. She suggested colors that would work on my hair color that did not require bleaching my hair. I was looking forward to getting an ombre of some sort, but unfortunately she advised against it because my hair is too short. After adding the highlights, she washed my hair before cutting. She gave an amazing scalp massage. I almost fell asleep a couple of times because I was so relaxed. The entire process took about 2 and a half hours and I was very happy with the results! She was able to bring my hair back to life and at a reasonable price compared to other salons. Since I got my highlights underneath where my hair parts, she suggested that I wouldn't need to get them done for another ~4 months. I went ahead and scheduled my next haircut out with her in 8 weeks. She gave me her business card and told me I call/text her directly if that date did not work out. I think I found my new hairstylist. I would recommend checking in through Yelp since they offer a $5 discount for doing that. Also I would try to book well in advance in person or online, especially if you are looking to book with a specific hairstylist that is in high demand, like Sylvia. :) read more

She has perfected the art of manipulating hair so that it does precisely what it should. I have not had good luck fidning a salon I like in Portland. I found Fancy Salon through Groupon and what a find it was! It takes me 1/2 hour to drive there and an hour in traffic, but it is worth it! I had an amazing haircut and color with Lu. Brenda did a wonderful hair straightening and cut. Such great ladies!
