Received an awesome short haircut from Sylvia yesterday. Talk about patience and perfection! Top that off with a super relaxing scalp massage and I was hooked. She is friendly and definitely knows what she is doing. I took in a photo of what I wanted but also gave free reign to make it hers. I am beyond thrilled. This is my third cut since moving to Portland. I was dissatisfied with the first two places and found Fancy Salon on Yelp! So glad I gave it a shot. I have a reasonably straightforward hairstyle, but over the years getting it cut has been a series of near misses. They'll get it almost right -- close enough to get me through a couple of months to the next one -- but it's not quite what I *really* wanted. I always end up looking for another place to try. Not with Lu. I showed her my example picture, told her about what had worked best in the past, and she grokked it immediately and set to work fixing me up. My appointment was with Evette. She was super sweet and did a great job. I trusted her to do whatever to shape my hair up. I have medium length, legit CURLY hair. This is long overdue but I need to rave about Lu! I was in town in early June for a wedding and was sick of mediocre haircuts in LA so I came to Lu. I told her I wanted a French New Wave style pixie cut and she immediately pulled out a copy of the same picture I had forgotten to bring in on her pixie Pinterest board. "I love doing pixie cuts," she said, and I knew it was hair destiny. I have a very thick "Mediterranean hair type," as they call it in France, and Lu told me the shape of my hair shaft has to be razored not snipped. I love when someone is in tune with what they do and enjoys educating themselves on their craft and that is just what she does. So! I found Fancy at the suggestion of a friend and set up an appointment with Sylvia Bueno. Sylvia is a warm, beautiful, attentive stylist. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but knew I wanted blonde and something "different". She is good at coaxing what you need out of you and you won't feel ashamed at not knowing what you want right away. THE BEST PART IS THE HAIR/SCALP MASSAGE!!! Like I said, I don't mess around with this stuff. I've had lots of professional hair cuts, but this stylist takes the cake with her scalp massage. I've been getting my hair cut by Lu at Fancy Salon for years, and she's the greatest. From my long Zooey Deschanel hair to my Mia Wallace bob, she always did me right. When I decided it was time for a change and asked for a much shorter style, she spent an hour and a half with me, getting my new pixie just so. I was terrified with my hair so short at first, and it took me a few days to get used to, but over a week later and this is easily my favorite haircut of all time. I went to see Heather when my regular stylist, Jen was on maternity. She cut and colored my hair, which is quite curly, and can be challenging. She really listened to me, and understood what I wanted. The shape works really well. I told her I wanted some highlights that would make my grey less noticeable, and to blend out the line from my last color. She chose the colors and method to do it, and I really like how it turned out. First of all I'm not really what you would call a salon-person, but I've been here a couple of times now and have nothing but great things to say! It has a welcoming and laid-back atmosphere (I find a lot of salons to feel a bit cold/stuffy) and cool bohemian decor; also all of the employees are pleasant with a friendly, down-to-earth vibe. My stylist Cate is the perfect balance of friendly and professional (as well as generally a lovely person). I watched her as she finished up with a client before me, and noticed that she has a natural ability to connect with people. The next time I was in she was doing a practice-run hairstyle with a bride-to-be, and I was impressed by her genuine excitement and attention to personalization. Cate worked some serious magic on my very long/thick/difficult hair, and uncovered it's natural beauty in a way no one had been able to before. Seriously, I have never ever felt so good about my hair! Not just with the cut but also with some creative coloring. Color is clearly a passion of hers! I spent years believing my fine wavy hair was always going to look messy, and I cringed anytime a stylist promised me texture or volume because it invariably turned me into an orange frizz ball. Today I had a hair-mergency. I'm new to the city and wanted to try to support a near-by salon in the Montavilla neighborhood where I live. And let's face it, I was also feeling a bit lazy and didn't want to make the trek to Division and 12th, where the already-recommended-to-me Fancy is located (and I'll admit, it's only like 3 miles from me- again, I'm lazy). My initial cringe inducing, pre-Fancy! cut was an unflattering, two-short, choppy hair cut akin to the do's I used to get when I was seven at the Hair Cuttery, only done without much skill. I was mid-panic when I called Fancy and spoke to Lu, who agreed to see me a mere three hours later. LU! The savior of hair and the loveliest stylist ever- she managed to even out my hair, cheer me up, and give me a very cute style that looked and felt great. I may have not been in the most ideal mood, as I had been maintaining long hair for the past few years, but had recently decided to go with a much shorter style, and I was still coming to terms with the idea. I'm one of those people with really fine, curly, sometimes limp hair who goes into salons after a year of not having it cut and saying "I have no idea what I want, just please make it look nice. Also I'm trying to grow it out." Not only was Evette really nice about that (absurd) request, but she did it! This is the first time I've really liked a haircut in years, and that's not from lack of expense and effort. Heather cut my hair for my first time at this salon yesterday and I am super happy with the whole experience. She helped me decide on the best version of the cut I wanted based on my hair and how much time I wanted to spend styling. She asked all the right questions and made sure she understood what I wanted and then gave me a high quality cut that I really like. The prices are also incredibly reasonable especially since she includes shampoo, blow-dry and style. The salon itself had a very authentically Portland, laid back appeal. I no longer frequent the area so I feel I can write a believable review, that is, one not intended to get me anything in return. I chose Lu because I wanted a pixie type cut and I think the website stated that she loves doing them. She cuts the old fashioned way with razor blade (at least my hair) so you need to be comfortable with that. She does a great job and backs her work. She offers a personal touch contact where I could text her for an emergency neck trim or something. I think she was uncomfortable going more edgy with me (I'm older) but I could have pushed the issue and didn't. My only other comment was that I tried calling the shop on occasion and got nothing, no answer, no voice mail. The online appointment setter has a couple issues (makes you enter a cc every time, doesn't remember info from past logins such as who I see) but it gets the job done. read more

I've been living in Portland for a little over a year now, and have yet to find my dream stylist. I really like Fancy Salon, but Heather, the owner, is somebody I would never go back to. Heather cut, colored, and permed my hair. It was my first time getting a beach perm, and my hair went from being slightly wavy and soft to a little more wavy and CRAZY frizzy. It's pretty damaged now. I was never warned about it, and she made it seem like she had done a ton of them, so I felt like I could trust her. Clearly that wasn't a great decision. She also had me leave the salon with wet hair, so "it would dry naturally." In November. Great. I assumed the next customer she had waiting for a long time during my appointment was the real reason for that. Then, I went back two weeks later to get it colored because clearly I'm a masochist. She called me the morning of my scheduled appointment to let me know she was sick and had to cancel. That's fine, stuff happens. She asked if we could reschedule for the following weekend, and we did. Then, Heather was over a half hour late for my early morning appointment, and didn't say a single word about it when she walked in. She's the owner of the salon, and didn't even kind of apologize, or offer up an explanation of any kind. When she got there, she disappeared into the back room for another 10 minutes, making it so I didn't get into the chair until 45 minutes after the scheduled start of my appointment. I asked for an ombre, leaving the ends of my hair my natural color and dying the top quite a bit darker. I asked her in the middle of her dying my hair if that was still what she was doing, and she said it was. My hair ended up being all one color, which clearly wasn't what I wanted. The cut was fine, although all I asked for was a trim so I can't really judge a lot based on that. Lastly, she used the word "retarded." Like, A LOT. I know that might not bother some people, and if you're one of those people you can just ignore this, but it made me incredibly uncomfortable. Hopefully she reads this and knows that she needs to be more careful about how she talks, at least while dealing with customers. I won't be going back to her based on all that. read more

Amazing Stylist, with an amazing eye for cutting edge style! I came in to Fancy salon to get a cut and color from Alicia, I wanted to take my platinum hair to a toned down "not brassy" golden blonde.....a very hard task! She embraced my vision with open arms, not only did she take my hair color exactly where I wanted to go she also gave me one of the best cuts of my life! She gave my fine/thin hair volume and a face flattering,a-line bob. Alicia is great! I also received an incredible european facial from Ali, I was relaxed and pampered (like a facial should be!) Ali was sooooooo nice and made me feel comfortable and relaxed, she also took the time to write out a list of some possible cause to my skin care worries (so sweet) This salon is clean, cute and has off-street parking! I went to Fancy Salon upon reading such great reviews about Jen. I needed to have a botched color job fixed and my hair cut. She was wonderful and did such a great job on both. I left feeling satisfied with my haircut and the color was so much better than before. A few weeks after receiving such great service I received a very hostile voice message from Jen about me leaving a terrible review about her services on a website. I did no such thing. I called her back left a message telling her this. I did receive a call back. This time it was a reluctant apology. Not by any means sincere. More of a 'I'm just saying I'm sorry but I don't believe you'. After that interaction I was soured. I will never go back and I will never recommend anyone to her or that salon. I strongly believe this was highly unprofessional behavior. I would never treat a customer/client that way. read more

Whoops! My first visit to Fancy was a perfect storm of unfortunate incidents... I let them know when I made the appt that I had to be out by a certain time to make a hockey game, they said no problem - but when I showed up my stylist was running behind because she was correcting a coloring-gone-bad. I had to wait 35 min. past my appt time to be taken back. While I was waiting, I borrowed the bathroom key, which is shared by all the businesses in the building and is outside and down a ways. It was raining sideways at the time, so not so pleasant. Unfortunately, through no fault of Fancy, the bathroom was filthy and smelled as if someone had been smoking in there like 5 minutes before me. Totally GROSS. I went back for my haircut, made uncomfortable smalltalk with the stylist, and finished up in a flash. The haircut was fine. But they don't take credit cards, and somehow I missed that detail when I booked. She asked me at the end of my cut, "I don't take anything but cash or check, is that ok?" Bad time to ask! So I had to run to the bank. Anyways, on another day, with a different stylist, on time, clean bathroom, probably would have been AOK. At least the haircut was good. read more

Found Fancy salon on yelp, went to their website, and saw that i could see all prices for all stylists, see when they have available appointments (I could have gone same day)- and you can book online. So great. Jenaya colored my crazy wavy 2 foot long thick hair. I always apologize to stylists, because god damn i have so much hair, and i know they have to look at me like... "ohhhh no." This is the 3rd salon I've been to here in Portland. I've never really considered myself to be too picky so it's actually rather strange that I haven't been happy with a stylist until now. I came in first for just a bang trim (expecting to pay) and wasn't charged, which was sweet and unexpected so I made sure to schedule an appointment here when I was due for a full cut. I scheduled with Brenda, since she did my trim. My first service here was a full-color and a cut. I have been very hesitant about coloring my hair as I've had a lot of bad experiences damaging it and I have long hair that I'd like to keep as healthy as possible. Brenda did a wonderful, even, fast and beautiful color on my hair. My appointment was 3 months ago and I'm blown away that it's still red! I've had a lot of hair colors and I've NEVER had a red stick this well, this long. Also, my cut was perfect. I want to keep the length of my hair and when I asked her to take as little as possible, I left there feeling like my hair lost it's dry ends, was healthy and smooth and that I didn't lose any length. Also, I ended up leaving with the product she used in my hair and not because she told me I should or tried to up-sell me, which I hate. She was very informative about some different options for my particular hair-type and I inquired as to the price and she gladly set me up as well as GAVE me some shampoo to help hold the color. I have another appointment with her coming up and so it is certain, I have found a Portland salon. Also, not that it's any of my business to comment but as a stranger to this business and its staff, with little or no bias regarding their services, I'd like to add in response to that contemptuous 1-star-review below, that just because you are entitled to your own opinion on Yelp, does not always mean you should chose to voice it. Not everything will always work for everyone and I'm so tired of these circumstantial bashings on Yelp. Your story sounds like a miscommunicated and unfortunate mishap which took end on YOUR part. Don't get worked up, if you want to inform the public, sound professional and informative, not spiteful and negative. Yelp should really use a more subjective form of filtering their reviews. read more

I'm in love. I've had nothing but bad, bad, bad experience with salons, whether for cut or color. Probably the only thing I've ever truly been satisfied with is a hair wash and flat iron -- kind of hard to screw that up. But, I swear, is it me -- the way I explain things? Or is it my "unique" needs (multiple colors, blended randomly but "just so" in my long, curly, thick hair)? I dunno, but I can pretty much say with certainty that I've had to "fix" whatever the stylist did, especially color. I've been coloring (and cutting) my own hair for years, and I have developed some pretty specific twists and turns of how I like things done. Now, granted, I managed to end up with some pretty brassy highlights this last time around, plus I was giving myself the ol' "chemical cut" from bleaching out too much. So, I decided I really needed to get myself to a professional salon, STAT. It was YELP that led me to Fancy! in the first place. Such rave reviews, especially this one chick, Brenda. So, I schedule a consult and go in and talk to her for 20 minutes, showing her pictures of my hair on a good day combined with a pic of what it might look like on a great day. I go on and on, and she had me convinced she could do it -- except at the last minute she surprises me by telling me that was her last day! Brenda was nice enough to come in the very next day just for me, to give me a Brazilian smooth. She did an excellent job, and I'd return to her in a heartbeat, but she's gone -- so Brenda isn't the real reason I'm writing. Alicia -- she's da bomb. Thank you to Brenda for referring me to Alicia right there at Fancy! I made an Internet appt. and went in, and she consulted with me for a full half hour. We picked colors together, and I was completely confident that she'd give me either pretty much exactly what I wanted or something better. The timer went off and a shampoo and blow-out later, and voila! My hair was . . . not exactly what we had been looking for. For the first time EVER, though, I did not feel my heart sink. Alicia and I were on the exact same page. She spoke to me like an equal, explaining to me why we didn't get the exact colors we wanted. Now, mind you, we were doing about six different colors. They were all PERFECT except the top layer -- yep, the one that shows the most. But it was obvious to both of us what had gone awry. I mean, Alica had been working with my original six layers of self-coloring, and we just had no way of knowing how my own top-level bleach-out would absorb the new color. It took Alicia just minutes to figure out a fix, and then 15 minutes later, voila! My hair was perfect. It might have taken three hours, but my multifaceted color is absolutely FLAWLESS, and, believe me, I had a challenging head of hair from the get-go. Alicia's work is just gorgeous. And now I'm even thinking of getting a little snip here and there to show off some of the colors I've traditionally hidden underneath. I spent a lot on the color (given the six colors and three hours), but prices for cuts look very reasonable! So, finally, I have found my colorist, and I am fully confident about other services she'll provide. And, not just that, but Alicia proved to be great for conversation. Sure, I brought a book, but she and I had so much in common that we talked like long-time girlfriends over coffee. Considering my two experiences with two different stylists at Fancy!, I have to conclude that this salon is a definite gem, a real stand-out among salons in this city. As for Alicia, I've found my stylistic soulmate! I have never before been ablle to say that my hair is PERFECT. Thank you, Alicia! read more

Just got my hair cut by Joel. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! I came in with very dry, damaged hair-- made the mistake of coloring my hair with a box... In addition to the cut, I got the deep conditioning treatment. He did an amazing job with my cut. Joel gave me some advice about styles (I had brought some pics) and understood what my hair is like and what would work best. He was so knowledgeable about my thick, wavy, sometime unruly hair and did a great job with my cut and giving me advice on how to better take care of my hair--always affirming me and making me feel comfortable. Joel really took care of me and I felt like I was in the hands of not only an expert stylist, but a good person who really cares about his clients. I'm one of those girls that doesn't know how or what to do with her hair, but I want something cute and funky. The first time I went into Fancy Salon I sat in the chair and told Jenaya to just "do whatever". I said, "Give me some layers and some 'dates'!" Jenaya went to town and did, in fact, get me some dates. Having a keen unique style herself, she's got an eye to match the perfect shape/color hairstyle to someone's specific features.
