Sylvia is as good as it gets. No one cuts my hair with the same degree of style and perfection. Last time, I asked for a bit of a change, and described the feeling I wanted: stylish but acting my age (i.e. I'm not 25 anymore!). She styled it with that exact feeling. Of course, I couldn't get it to look as she did in the salon, but it still looks great! She's also easy to talk to, and very reasonably-priced. I think I just needed a man this whole time. Joel knows what he's doing; I am beyond thrilled with my haircut! I've broken up with 2.5 hairdressers in the last couple years because either they just didn't listen, or I couldn't get an appointment after 2pm. Joel actually listened to what I wanted, then suggested something similar that ended up looking a lot better than what I've been doing. He is personable and good company, (nothing sucks more than trying to make awkward small talk), but Joel is easy to talk to. I'm a huge fan of their online appointment book; it's a lot easier than trying to explain my work schedule to a receptionist (which is also an option). I quickly snagged a 6pm appointment, (unheard of at my last salon). $40 for a wash and women's haircut (pretty average). A few weeks ago, I had a real itch for a new cut. I also wanted to switch things up a bit and try a new salon, which is unlike me (I've been going to the same salon, and the same stylist for years). Anyways, relying on YELP, I found Fancy Salon, and I am very happy about it. I was able to book online after reading about each stylist's personal bio on their website. I booked with Alicia and was able to get in the very next morning. $40 bucks for a hair cut is pretty damn good, especially with my level of nitpickiness- is that a word? In my experience its very hard to get my Asian hair to look textured without having to use a lot of product or a styling tricks. After giving Alicia the low down of my needs and wants, she gave me a cut that allows me to pretty much do whatever I want (or don't want) to it. Super simple, with a little edge. It looks great to me, and I use almost no product or heat tools to style my hair in the morning, big plus! Maybe I'll go back for a color soon :) read more

Just had my hair cut by the fabulous Jenaya! She is definitely sent from the hair heavens people! But first let me tell you about the actual salon. I loved that there was a small private lot. Next the salon feels really cool and modern. There was also a wall of all kinds of tea one could enjoy while getting their hair did, awesome. The actual process with Jenaya was great. She was very warm and really cared about what I wanted out of my haircut. I showed her some pics of what I was thinking and she went to work! As she was doing her thang she would update me or explain what/why she was doing a particular thing. It was great, I asked questions and she fully answered me. She was super relaxed about the whole talking thing. If you want to chat she will chat, if you want to just sit back and relax, she will let you do that too. I tend to do both and it was very pleasant. I have lots of fine hair which makes it seem dense, and I have a side bang issue and cowlick. She totally worked magic and made it just what I wanted! I love how she totally "got" my hair. But curly hair gals can trust her as well, she does not discriminate and will work her magic! Brenda isn't just a good colorist (and stylist) she's a super hero! After dying my hair black for about three years I desperately wanted a change. I tried doing an at home color correction which turned out horribly. Part of my hair was a weird auburn, the rest was left blacker than ever and all of it was completely damaged. Because of the fragile state of my hair, I knew I needed a good colorist who would be honest with me. Based on her bio and the great reviews here, I ended up choosing Brenda. I emailed her and she quickly replied that she was free to see me same day. After doing a strand test and giving me a free deep condition, we talked and she was very clear about what my hair could and couldn't do, which was exactly what I was looking for and we decided to push forward. From 3:30 to 7, she didn't leave my side! We left that evening having agreed to meet again the next morning, in order to give my hair time to show it's full reaction to the current treatment. The next morning we met again at 9am and again, Brenda didn't leave my side until almost 7pm!! The amount of time she took with me shows that she is just so completely dedicated to satisfying her customers. She made sure that I was completely happy with the color (which took two rounds of foils, a couple color strips, maybe a hundred washes and I'm sure I'm leaving out so much more of what she did) and, above all, she did her absolute best to keep my hair healthy. I knew getting black color out would be a long and arduous process but Brenda's honesty, ability to set proper expectations PLUS her great and upbeat attitude (she was still upbeat and awesome even after ten hours!!!) made it a fun and painless process. In 24hrs I was able to walk out with a great cut, style, healthy, shiny hair and a color that wasn't black. I literally had tears of joy in my eyes once she finished. I'll never be able to thank Brenda enough for all the hard work and time she put in, not to mention the completely affordable price she charged. She definitely has a new and loyal follower. and p.s. after spending so much time there, I can say with confidence that the entire salon really is great, the dryers are AMAZING, the organic products are wonderful and the other stylists were also very welcoming! I write yelp reviews all of never, but my recent haircut with Jenaya deserves a little praise. I've been resigned to serviceable but rather lackluster haircuts for the past few years and decided it was time for a change. Based on yelp reviews, I booked an appointment at Fancy Salon with Jenaya and hoped for the best...and the best is what I got. My fine, curly-ish hair looks alive! Healthy! Bouncy! Adorable! As a person with super thick long bleach blonde hair, I am pretty cautious about new salons. My regular stylist was out of town, and I didn't feel like doing my own roots. I was drawn to this place because they had specific services for bleach. It also had pretty good reviews. But I still called ahead, I got reassurance, and got a price from the owner--who ended up doing the color. My hair can take a lot of heat and I don't consider myself picky. I understand that what I do to my hair is damaging, unpredictable, and risky. I don't mind if my stylist makes mistakes. This was the worst salon experience of my life. I was in the chair for three hours, and came out with bright yellow roots, and damage that I'm still treating six months later. In addition to this, I got a worse than bishop's bang trim. It cost me 95 dollars (on the phone she told me 70) not including tip. Very disappointing. read more

I bought a groupon for this place and finally got around to testing it out today. I booked online for a deep condition and cut from Brenda. (It includes skin services as well but Ali has moved to a different salon so I get to split up my pampering day :-) ) The salon is super cute--didn't look like the typical salons I've been to. For example, you sit in front of a full length mirror as you get your hair cut and there's no counter to get in your way. One of those things that you didn't realize is super awesome until you experience it. Brenda was great! She took her time to ask me about my hair and what I wanted and really listened. I told her about some of my hair issues (dry scalp) and she gave me a few different suggestions on how to combat it. Their dryers deserve a star on their own: they're awesome! You sit on a comfy couch and it kind of rotates around your head and gives off heat. Best thing: NO NOISE! Loved it. Overall, walked out with a great cut. It took us about 2 hours but didn't seem that long because Brenda's chatty and fun! Would definitely recommend! read more

I just moved to Portland and I LOVED my stylist from my salon back home so I was nervous and sad to look for a new one! I like unique cuts and colors, I like a little fun with my hair! I choose Alica to cut and color my hair, she was so nice and took all my pictures and random explanation and created a wonderful look for me! The Hair Saga Continues!!! Ok, I know, three postings all about one hairstylist? I just can't help it, you need to know about this addiction of mine. It might just become yours! After getting a great cut from Brenda, I went back a week later. I had decided to try another taming method- a smoothing treatment! I don't know about you, but I was so excited with the invention of the "Brazilian Smoothing Treatments", and pretty much heartbroken when I learned about the formaldehyde debacle. I knew it was too good to be true... BUT then... I asked Brenda, and sure enough she had a solution! She has just started caring a SAFE, non-toxic Brazilian smoothing treatment! And as much as I love my haircut, I still don't want the hassle of dealing with my hair texture, so I booked a smoothing treatment as soon as I could. The result.... 1. Insanely awesome hair. Seriously, it is soft, smooth, flowy, "normal girl hair"!. I have NEVER had easy hair, ever. 2. It is the best thing since...the flat-iron. Which I have gladly put away in a cabinet. No joke. 3. The treatment was easy- the product is so safe that Brenda doesn't even wear gloves. That makes me feel really comfortable about putting it all over my head. Oh, and it smells good! 4. I wasn't sure what would happen after the treatment, so I waited a day and did a test. I washed it, and let it air dry. Gasp! Air dry??? Yes, air dry. It actually laid down, stayed straight, and tame. I didn't even use product! It isn't perfect, a random flip here or there (which is just my hair I am sure), but a quick swipe with a round brush and the blowdryer and it was solved. I swear my hair dried quicker too...but maybe this was due to the one day of amazing sunshine. 5. Those bangs I told you about? The ones that hate me? Yeah, well, guess who is in control now...ME. They just behaved, all by themselves. No straightener, no gel, no wax, no cursing. 6. Downside? I am perhaps now addicted to this treatment. I've had a taste of the good life. My "get-ready" time is cut down to nearly nothing now that I don't have to arm wrestle my locks. 7. Even better? I went to bed with wet hair last night, which normally results in a cave-woman meets Pat Benatar look (not good). I woke up and voila! A few minor waves here and there, but a head full of tame hair. With no blowdryer, flat-iron, product, or effort. 8. Even my boyfriend can't believe it! As much as my Pat Benatar looks brought him a lot of laughter, I think even he is thankful to have more time with me in the morning, less cursing at the mirror, and a less complainy girlfriend. Ok, enough. Don't expect me to go away though, I miss Brenda already so I've booked a coloring appointment for this Friday. I'll let you know how it goes, and I swear...after that, I need to work on my hair addiction. read more

I've been cutting and dying my hair myself for the last 2 years. Big mistake. I used yelp to find a salon near my hood and volia! made my appt for the following week. Their website helped me determine the right stylist for me. I wanted something wild and sexy, not soccer mom. I knew Alicia would be perfect. She worked on my hair for 3 hours! She had to get rid of the awful black dye job that I did, returning my hair to it's natural dark brown. Then she cut off over an inch, making my hair look LONGER and more healthy. The final step was giving me lovely long bangs. yippie! I will never do my hair myself again. Thank you thank you Alicia!! Great atmosphere too. Nice and homey. Today I went to have my haircut by Emie. I am always skeptical about new hairstylists because I have been dooped in the past. Based on Fancy Salon's good reviews I thought, hell, I'll give her a shot. She was very patient with me as I am very picky about my style and color. She asked questions to make sure she understood the look I was going for and mixed two different colors perfectly to get the exact shade I wanted. I called her at 4pm today and she had me in by 5 and stayed late to make sure the job was done well. (Amazing service!) Everything was reasonably priced and she even gave me a student discount on the haircut. My hair feels and looks great again! Thanks Emie, you are awesome! read more

Thank you, yelp, for helping me find Fancy Salon (and Alicia!)! I don't have a car, and the location of the salon was easily accessible via public transit (I live in Southwest and the salon is in Southeast); I made it there in less than 20 minutes. And it was super-convenient to make an appointment with my stylist directly through e-mail. The salon itself is hip, yet quaint...you won't find pretentious folks here. :) I recommend you check out their web site! I went with Alicia, as I was looking for somebody who could cut my fine hair and leave it with some texture (she can do razor cuts, too), and am SOOOO glad I did! Alicia was very likable---a skilled, down-to-earth artist with style---and very talented. She is experienced and really knows exactly what she's doing. And I also like that she didn't try to push expensive product on me! She cut my hair while asking questions to meet MY needs and gave me the style I was looking for and couldn't find at other salons in Portland. Through the miracles of a coupon deal, I decided to indulge in a little personal pampering at Fancy Salon. I scheduled online to get a Deep Condition and Haircut from Brenda plus I lined up some skin services from Ali. I love that you can schedule your appointment online and see what is available! Their website is easy to navigate and informative and the process for making an appointment online is painless. The salon itself is kind of small, but not cramped feeling. The waiting area could have used more magazines, but I had my iPhone to amuse me so it wasn't that big a deal. First up for me was my appointment with Ali. I was getting a mini-facial and a brow / lip wax. There were forms for me to fill out beforehand which I wish could have been handed to me while I waited, but the questions were pretty standard and it only took me a few minutes to fill out. It was nice that she took the time to have me fill it out at all. The treatment room was nice and dim, smelled fab and had pleasant music in the background. It was kind of cool because the salon itself had rockin' music playing, but the treatment room was sound-proofed so it really transported you into a different environment. The treatment chair was a little high for me, but I am a nimble girl, so I clambered up into the seat just fine and Ali cocooned me up all nice and cozy in the chair (the heated chair just made me all melty and relaxed). She took the time to talk to me about my skin and gave my face a once over under a super bright light (My eyes had pads over them so I didn't go blind) before doing my waxing. She talked to me about what I wanted done with my brows and I appreciated that she really listened and gave me the conservative, cleaned up brows that I wanted. After the waxing was done (took a little longer than usual, but not that bad and I liked that she was careful and took her time), I got my mini-facial. Frankly, if that was a mini-facial, I don't think I'd be able to walk after a full facial! Ali has great hands and I really felt like she wanted me to have a good experience. The mini-facial was so relaxing and I felt so pampered! I was concerned that it would be clinical feeling process, but it was completely the opposite. It felt like a very personal experience and, I hope this doesn't sound weird, but almost ritualistic in how well I was taken care of. I was completely relaxed and could have spent the next 2 hours napping in that chair! After the facial, my skin felt so good! The exfoliating was gentle, the toner was not harsh and the mask was soothing. The whole skin session was only supposed to take about an hour, but it went a little long so if you are on a tight schedule you may want to let Ali know. I didn't mind the extra time in that chair -- I didn't want to leave it! After I managed to get myself vertical again and out to the main salon, Brenda was waiting for me to do my hair. She was super nice about the fact that I kept her waiting for an extra 20 minutes. We talked about my hair and what I wanted and I showed her a picture. We got it all settled and she took me over to get shampooed. I LOVE THEIR SHAMPOO CHAIRS! Instead of being the traditional old-school shampoo chair that just reclines and puts your head in the sink and keeps your back flat, the back of the shampoo chair tilted and adjusted to your back so it was SUPER comfortable. One nice, warm shampoo later and I got settled under one of their high-tech dryers to let the Deep Condition work its magic. I love that their dryers are not the usual bucket on your head style, but they are rather cool with oscillating heat and air. I got to sit next to my husband in the waiting room while this was going on and chat with him. After about 15 minutes, Brenda got me rinsed and settled back into the styling chair. I liked that she did about 40% of my haircut with my hair damp and then blew my hair dry to finish the cut and style. My hair sits very differently when it's wet versus when it's dry, so having her finish the job in it's "real" state meant less time spent in the chair. Granted, that means there was a lot of little dry bits of hair all over the place, but I love the results. All told, even though Fancy is across town from me and even though I am not the type to get my hair cut often or go in for getting pampered -- I loved my experience so much, I just may have to change my ways! read more

Absolutely DO let Lu cut your hair!! She's been my hair savior for the past couple of years and I can't tell you how many times people have gushed about my haircut. I always tell them it's her fault it looks good - all I do is sit there and let her work her magic! i trust her so much i let her decide what she's doing every time she picks up her scissors, and i have never been anything less than thrilled with the results. I live in Seattle these days and make pilgrimages to Portland specifically to see Lu. My hair is stick straight and it takes serious skill to give it shape - especially because i am totally useless when it comes to doing anything more than putting a little product into it. Had a haircut with Heather, the owner. I found her to be down to earth, intelligent, and interesting. I'm always happy when the required haircut conversations go beyond celebrity gossip and mere pleasantries. I really liked the naturally lit vibe of the salon. Tea and beverages available near the door. And a couple of hilarious books ("Bad Hair" and "Mullets") available to flip through while you're waiting. A great haircut. She took into consideration my hair type and the fact that I don't use products or heat to do my hair. She asked about allergies and preferences in terms of product used on my hair. She also showed me how to make my naturally mixed/wavy hair look curlier. AND she didn't get snobby when I asked for a recommendation of the best drugstore-priced hair products (FYI: Garnier Fructis and JASON are both good options). Two thumbs up. I had an appointment with Brenda on a Friday evening, and it was great! First of all, she didn't rush me as if she was eager to get on with her evening, which is always a hazard with Friday appointments. She listened to my complaints about an itchy scalp and made some suggestions that no other hairdresser has, although it's a problem I've mentioned to many past hairdressers. (She told me to exfoliate my scalp and to use a clarifying shampoo.) Her scalp massage was awesome when she washed my hair, too. The cut that she gave me was exactly what I wanted, too. As of writing this review, I am a two-week-old transplant into the great city of Portland, OR. I've spent my entire life in the northeast and have become accustomed to my certain staples - my doctor, my dentist, and my hair stylist. So, you could understand how one of my first tasks after getting internet connectivity in my apartment was to find my new Portland counterparts for these roles. Enter Sylvia at Fancy Salon (more for the hair stylization and less for the bi-annual dental cleanings). I found Sylvia after reading reviews here on Yelp and thought, "Ok, that was easy". And, you know what? It really was. I showed up to my appointment after a long day at work. I was so happy to see a comfy little tea bar available, so I helped myself to some of it. Perfect way to start the appointment. Sylvia was beyond friendly and cordial and really redefined what getting a haircut should be about. She was a collaborator and you could tell that she cares about what she does. She takes her time and is a great, mild-mannered conversationalist. This place is GREAT! I work across the street and Fancy takes care all of our staff's hair. We all love the cuts we get, it's a super comfortable atmosphere, and they all make me feel right at home. Rachael is amazing. Best haircut I've had in a long time. She listened to what I wanted and took time to discuss ideas and study my hair type. I've never had someone take time to study my hair and what my hair does to make sure she gets a good cut/color. My hair is thick and a mix between straight and wavy and she totally gets it. And when I had to wait a bit for my appointment she offered a deep conditioning treatment while I waited, which rocks. Caitlin has been styling my hair for several years now and she is by far the best stylist I've ever been to. I have medium-short curly hair and she knows exactly how to work with my hair by crafting gorgeous layers in a style that really works for me. I like to be pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair and the way she styles it makes it look great even if I decide to do nothing to it in the morning. I love that! This place is so laid-back. It's basically a squad of independent stylists, who have created a great community that you can come and visit. The space is fairly kid-friendly. Some magazines and loose stuff, but the stylists are great at keeping their stations contained. It's also pretty minimalist in design. My stylist is Lu, who specializes in pixie cuts and layers. She's always super chill and great. Very into naturally enhancing a person's natural look, and a big fan of thick bobs. She's great at listening to your needs, even whipping out a tablet and asking you to scroll through pictures so she can get an idea of what you're looking for. read more

I've gone to Alicia a handful of times now, for haircuts, bang trims and having my hair colored. I've been nothing but pleased with the work every time I've gone. Alicia is friendly and professional, happy to chat but also okay with letting you zone out if you need. I love being able to book appointments online - and know the exact time I'm expected, not just book online for a 2-hour block and wait for someone to call me back with an exact time. The only issue I have with the business is that now that they've gone to all-electronic billing and email you the receipt, you have to be sure to tell them, out loud, how much you intend to tip. If you don't tell them at the right time, they've already billed you and it's too late (unless you happen to have enough cash on you to hand your stylist). read more

Upon moving to Portland, I knew I needed to start the dreaded task of finding a stylist to help tame the beast that is my hair. It was starting to look like I was wearing a protective hair helmet or that I might need to buy an extra airline seat for my hair should I need to fly in the near future. I needed help and fast! So, I turned to trusty Yelp and discovered Fancy Salon which not only had great reviews, but is also conveniently located in my neighborhood. I called up (appointments can be made online) and asked if there was a stylist available who is familiar with curly hair. I was able to get a same-day appointment with Sylvia. Sweet! Upon arriving, I was greeted warmly and was able to relax while I waited for a few minutes. The vibe is very laid back which I appreciated. There was a very sweet dog perched on the couch with me. Dog+good music+friendly people=great experience! Sylvia was absolutely wonderful! She took time to talk with me about what I wanted and then explained what she was going to do. She used really great products by Kevin Murphy on my hair (I returned the next day to buy them). They smelled great and made my hair look really good. Sylvia took her time cutting my hair and at the end, she had me run my fingers through it and show her how I liked to style it. This was a very welcome change from my usual experience of going to get my hair cut and styled by someone who has no idea what to do with curly hair and walking out looking like something has gone horribly wrong from the neck up. Sylvia was very friendly and not overly talky which I appreciated. She gave me some great suggestions for places where I might procur yummy food and locally brewed beer. For the first time, I'm really looking forward to returning for a haircut and I will definitely be heading back to Fancy Salon. read more

Received an awesome short haircut from Sylvia yesterday. Talk about patience and perfection! Top that off with a super relaxing scalp massage and I was hooked. She is friendly and definitely knows what she is doing. I took in a photo of what I wanted but also gave free reign to make it hers. I am beyond thrilled. This is my third cut since moving to Portland. I was dissatisfied with the first two places and found Fancy Salon on Yelp! So glad I gave it a shot. Oh and they have online appointment booking and emailed receipts. Fantastic! Now that my hair is doing what I want I fell more compelled to maintain it. Thanks Sylvia! Let me just start off by saying Heather is amazing at balayage and coloring hair! I came in with an idea of what I wanted and walked out with something better. I liked the atmosphere and how welcoming the staff were, they were all very nice. Heather gave me helpful suggestions that I now use and was very careful while she was coloring my hair by picking out sections that would brighten up my face and leaving some sections alone so there would be a contrast. She was easy to talk to and shared a lot of interesting things with me. I will definitely go back to her again and would recommend her for everyone that's interested in getting their hair done! read more

Im not the kind of girl that likes to get my hair done but Gretchen really helped guide me on what color would look the best and she listened to my preference on how I wanted it cut. She is such a friendly person and even thought I know her on a personal level she kept her professionalism and made sure I was comfortable the whole time :) The Salon is really cute and intimate and use some of the best products. I go to Krystal Phillips for all my bleaching needs. She is GREAT and has one of the lowest prices in Portland for bleach touch ups. Wish the place had a bathroom and some AC, but it is portland. You have to use the bathroom at the business next door in the same building. Can be frustrating with foils on your head. read more
