Located between the NJ Turnpike (I-95) and I-295 near Bordentown, Iron Skillet is housed in the Petco Truck Stop main building, occupying about half the structure. While not a regular at such cultural phenomena, I have visited enough of them over years of long car trips to appreciate what they offer. Plenty of gas pumps, restrooms, showers for truckers, convenience stores, and diner style grub that is usually carb laden and caffeinated. Sometimes, that menu is exactly what I want. Iron Skillet has a very good Chicken Fried Steak (w white gravy, hash browns, two eggs and toast/biscuits/pancakes). It is way more than I can eat, and I get the gravy on the side so I can avoid most of it, and know I won't finish the potatoes nor the rye toast, but placing the over-easy eggs on top of the breaded steak and eating them together is a very satisfying breakfast. The coffee is strong, and my request for milk resulted in a large glass of cow juice alongside the brown mug and backup carafe with two more refills to pour when wanted. Clearly designed for bigger appetites to sustain long haul drivers, I don't mind taking home what I can't consume. Service was friendly and efficient. They work in teams, as at least three people checked in with me and helped deliver my food. I also liked the floor design like many Waffle Houses with undulating counters that allowed the servers to approach all customers quickly and provide more "surface area," close to the kitchen. It wasn't crowded at 10 a.m., and very clean. Iron Skillet scratched my CFS itch for at least the next six months, and I appreciate the rest of its iconic approach to classic road stops. I ordered the traditional breakfast with eggs scrambled lightly (which they have absolutely no idea what that is), bacon, wheat toast and because they had no grits like advertised I chose the soup, which was turkey and rice for my last side. ‍‍ The soup was okay, but weird with the other breakfast foods. The bacon was acceptable and the portion was large. The eggs were way overcooked but just short of having the telltale brown spots of burnt eggs. The young man that was my server was nice enough, but I'm still not convinced he has reached puberty. I guess the worst thing that with tip, my bill was $25!! Won't return. read more

To celebrate the start of cohabitation with my significant other, we decided to try dining at the Iron Skillet. I'm not sure if "restaurant" is the best word to describe it, it's more like a get in, eat over salted and extremely fatty (but filling) "food," and get out...unless you need to buy a new CB radio, some camo gear, or in my case a gallon of water and some rubbing alcohol. The petro truck stop that houses this iron skillet is good: 24 hours, has gas/diesel/showers, etc. I can only assume that iron skillet is playing to their core base of over the road truckers with their way of doing things: service was lackluster, the salad bar ran out of ranch dressing, staff were unprofessional (cursing excessively), and the seating isn't comfortable. to make matter worse: my boo asked if the chicken was breaded, the server said "no, it's grilled." Guess how the chicken came out?? Covered in breading. She doesn't like to send things back and here I can't blame her. The fries are garbage crinkle cut that look like they're Ore Ida. Onion rings were ho-hum, not worth your hard earned 99 cents for the upcharge. My meal was chicken tenders. The "hand breaded" pieces were quite small, maybe not a bad thing to avoid over-eating. The sauce was weird, like a combo of hot sauce and ranch. Didn't like it. Meals do come with "garlic" toast that's lukewarm and artificial tasting, salad bar (small selection but at least it wasn't all iceberg), and whatever soup of the day you want (usually 3 to choose from). For $28 total, we should've gone to a 24 hour fast food place and saved a Benjamin. But hey it is an experience, as my significant other said: "it didn't feel like jersey in there." Whether or not you think that's a good thing is your Rorschach test. Will we be back? Perhaps on Monday. They have an all you can eat buffet that's normally $14-15 for $9. read more

I can 't say anything bad about this place.... They have remodeled it and it no longer has the feel of a truck stop... When you walk in it now appears like a diner... They do have a full buffet for breakfast, lunch, diner and late night... The hot section of the buffet does shutdown around midnight... Really cool & you can even buy a set (of 4) as you check out for $20. The buffet (only $12.99/pp) looked lovely, yet fattening. We ordered off the menu. Pancakes & eggs for the boy and me. First of all they permanently removed the buffet. It was the draw for many people. We have gone there 2x since reopened during pandemic. The menu is limited, not like it used to be. Maybe menu with more selections with come out after pandemic is over. The last 2 times, the food was off. Not prepared as ordered. Took longer to get and restaurant was not packed, even with covid limited seating capacity. We may try it once pandemic is over but who knows. We were disappointed with our dinner lastnight. This is my first-time trying out this buffet. I like how it is 24/7 and the place is self seating which I enjoy because in able to pick my own seat. My first impression was there wasn't much of a food selection but enough to make your belly full. Very simple salad bar and meat selection are minimal. They have fried chicken, pork chop and pepper steak. They have an ok amount of desserts such as brownie, cornbread, and pies. But for $13.99 and a free refill on soda, I can't complain. This place might as well be considered shut down since it's the only eatery in the area that isn't operating. Sad really. Petro always says they try to serve truck drivers but they shut down the only eatery that is really close without needing to place a phone order. Just a bunch of bull sh1t. It's been closed for months. Wonder if everyone who worked there quit or found other jobs. It used to have great food. The lunch and dinner buffets were ok but for the price it wasn't too bad. A convenient 24-hour stopover between Highway 295 and the Turnpike. The buffet ($12.95) was okay - though do yourself a service, skip the eggs (which looked dried out) at the serving counters but order them at the station which come perfectly cooked. Also get the fruits as they do have a decent selection - pineapple, cantaloupe, orange, grape, etc. (Somehow, they don't have banana which was there in my last visit though.) They bring out lunch soups from previous day, and quality is woeful compared to a few years ago. Just 2 soups now, not 3 as in past. Entrees are saving feature, thumbs up here. Cooks are not always attentive to buffet condition, however. Servers are efficient and very pleasant, but can't overcome other business misgivings. Overall, the "big chain" truckstops don't really offer anything spectacular, but the Iron Skillet at the Petro in Bordentown is actually halfway decent. It's one of the only Petro buffets I'll even bother eating. And honestly, this restaurant has gone downhill ever since the corporate/TA takeover. They've gone from offering an excellent seafood buffet with alaskan snow crab legs on Friday, and a Prime Rib buffet on Saturday....to offering more "basic" fare- crab claws and roast beef, but for the same price. On the weekends, one employee in the restaurant makes the experience stand out. Makes you feel a little better about that $14.95 price tag. He's the tall man at the meat carving station. I believe his name is Jim. He truly takes pride in the food he prepares and serves. Comes in early to make sure the roasts are prepared right, and is constantly busying himself with making sure the food on the buffet looks presentable. Always has time to make conversation with folks. And if you're even somewhat of a regular customer- he remembers your face, too. My husband and I end up in Bordentown about once a month, but he always remembers our faces. Maybe it's not enough for some folks to bother with the rather steep price tag, for what amounts to a basic truckstop buffet with a carved roast. But, I always see a lot of "regular folks" (not just truckers) in the Iron Skillet on weekends, and for me I really enjoy being treated like a valued human being when I go somewhere to eat. The servers in the restaurant, overall, are friendly and the service is good. Like I said the Bordentown Petro isn't perfect and certainly leaves much to be desired in other areas of the truck stop. But stop in on the weekends, have the buffet and have a little chat with Jim the meat-carving man. It's well worth it, IMO :). read more

My husband, a truck driver, likes going here for breakfast. The buffet is worth $9 when I'm not sure what I want for breakfast and want a little taste of everything. Good biscuits. Yesterday, I was really impressed with our server & the patrons. I took a 19yr old friend who is has intellectual disabilities. His table manners are rough around the edges and he talks very animatedly, with a not quite "indoor voice." Unlike other restaurants we have been to, the waitress allowed my friend to talk until she understood what he wanted. She didn't rush him or turn to me for an interpretation. We were up at the buffet and I didn't realize he couldn't reach some tongs because I was trying not to spill syrup. When I looked back at him, I saw a server help him reach to serving tongs he couldn't reach. Not one patron or staff gave us the usual "Why did you bring HIM here, in public where I can see him look?" look. This experience alone would make me patronize the place again. read more

LOVE this place....We take our kids here every Sunday. It's like a family ritual. We always find something on the menu that we like. The staff is attentive and eagerly to please. Never had a problem with this location. If your able to get Mrs MONICA as your waitress, then your in for a treat. She's one of the BEST at that location. She treats EVERYONE like family(even the rude ones)! Portions are great. Food is cooked to your expectations. Restrooms are attended and the store is stocked with all kinds of needs. I'm not a truck driver but I am on the road a lot throughout New Jersey and have to say that this place is great. Located off of Turnpike Exit 7 before you get onto Rt. 295. I often stop off here when I am driving, before I get onto the Turnpike or 295 and pick up a bottle of water and some to-go soup. You can get things from the buffet TO-GO! And it is much better and healthier to do that than get crappy fast food. This alone makes Iron Skillet worth while! read more

Big disappointment, asked for 10 Oz Ribeye and they don't serve it anymore. Ordered the chicken fried chicken and it came out in less than 10 minutes and tasted processed, biscuit was old, burnt, and cold, waitress didn't want to have anything to do with me yet I saw her tending to and treating other customers well. Left most of the food and didn't leave a tip. Hope I'm never forced to stay here again. The 2 stars are because the salad was decent, the 13 dollar shower was ok, and the parking lot is huge even though they charge you 20 bucks or that equivalent in any store purchases or 50 gallons of gas.
