First time here. Friendly service and nice diner setting. I ordered the large $22 Italian Sub for take out to share with my guy. The sandwich was filled generously with meats but unfortunately the bread was stale and it had very little seasoning. You can't have a great sandwich without great bread. It also needed more oil and vinegar. I was disappointed because I haven't had an Italian sub in a long time and was really looking forward to eating it. What happened? I went into the deli for lunch the other day and ask for a corned beef sandwich on rye with mustard. I was so surprised to see the sandwiches must've been a third of the size they were when I remember a few years ago, the price is almost doubled, and the quality is really stinks. My brother went in there for breakfast one day and he ordered a couple eggs, bacon toast coffee came almost $16. Where the hell is the Contro around here? Corned beef hash was scarce and burnt. Grits were tasteless and lumpy. Service was not good either. Will not be going back.

Stopped in and sat to eat. Their were two other tables occupied. I ordered the Pastrami Ruben, it arrived on a plate with nicely staked pastrami, a good amount of dressing, saurekraut, on nicely toasted rye bread with fries. The meat was not too fatty, cooked to perfection, and the fries unsalted and also nicely cooked and crispy. I also ordered a side of macaroni salad image not taken. However, it was piled high, good portion for two people, and was great, not overly mayonnaise filled or vinegar sweet. It was perfect. My wife had the Roast beef triple decker and stated it was good. She wasn't sure if more meat would be too much and take away from the overall sandwich. She did state she had a larger portion at other diners but felt it was sufficient for her. My son had the cheeseburger platter with fries. Came out big, thick, juicy, and cooked to perfection. His fries were piled high, and he said, quote" These fries are on fire," lol. He also had a side of Cole slaw, and that was excellent. Overall, we had a great experience with the owner. He was very friendly, attentive, and caring about his food and making sure you're enjoying your dinner and time. Far warning the food is cooked to order. Most places have stuff pre-made set in warming trays. Not this place you get fresh ingredients, cooked at the time of your order by the owner himself. That is hard to find.. this is a gem. I wasted money on this lunch. I wanted soup so I figured a place that portrays themselves as a jewish deli would have good soup. hahaha I was mistaken. it tastes like sour egg salad. don't do it. I dig this place. I've had their chicken & rice soup, matzo ball soup, and the corned beef reuben. I've never had a bad meal here. The only item that leaves a bit to be desired is the french fries. I prefer a crispy, thin french fry as opposed to a thick, soft fry. Other than that, this is a spot I will continue to patronize and enjoy! read more

Awful!!! A business associate and I met there for coffee and a muffin. The place is big, and there were only four other customers in the whole place. Although it was empty at lunch time the owner told us to "get out". He further went on to tell us we couldn't stay there for 30 minutes if we're not ordering more. The restaurant was nearly empty at lunch time and I could see why. I'll never return and suggest you go anywhere else as the owner was rude and angry. I would give this place minus 5 stars if possible. Stay away, there are better, friendlier places nearby. read more

Ugh! This is not a Jewish deli, don't let the name fool you, the way it did me. The first tip off should have been that there was no matzoh ball soup available. My tiny cup of chicken noodle soup came with elbow macaroni in it, and was tasteless. There was no delicious array of pastries or knishes on view upon entering. My hot open turkey sandwich came smothered in gravy and tasted a day too old. Only two choices of hot vegetables...at least the mashed potatoes were good. Call this a Jersey luncheonette, because that's what it is. And not a good one either. Service was slow and the food wasn't good ....I can't see this place staying in business .....If you want a true Jewish deli go to Marlboro or Manalapan - you won't be disappointed. read more

This diner is inside the Gables mini-mall, across from the Jersey Shore Univ. Hospital. It looks, from the outside just blah! But it's in fact beautiful inside serving delicious home style breakfast, lunch & dinner meals. Their Chocolate cake is wonderful and the service quick & and amiable. Fitted with comfy booths and some 4 top tables it's a very welcoming atmosphere. The food is typical American diner fare, but the owners are Greek and feature many ethnic dishes of all kinds. Irv is long gone and it is now owned by John a Greek. So therefore it has no real look/feel of a jewish deli like say the many hundreds in NYC. My first visit was for breakfast and decided on just a simple fried egg sandwich. Both the coffee and sandwich were ordinary but on the plus side cheap at about $4. Next visit was for take out and included 2 brisket of beef on rye and one pastrami on rye and potato salad with both. With a couple of sodas the tab was $30. Ordinary rye bread and ordinary pastrami, but the brisket was decent . Potato salad and slaw just OK. Bottom line: I'm in the area often and this is just an OK restaurant and I may even go back again. But, not worth the a lengthy trip for anyone else. It's worthy of just a luke warm recommendation and at nearly $10 per sandwich is not a very good value. read more

Great breakfast of scrapple n eggs is what my tummy desired and got for only 5 bucks!! Sorry to do this, but Irv's has started a slow decline and after 3 sub-par eating experiences, I needed to submit another review. The last 3 times I have eaten at Irv's, the hot corned beef sandwich has arrived cold, with little or no mustard. I have also tried the once delicious chocolate chip pancakes, but service was extremely slow, and the owner refused to change the radio station they were playing when I asked them to turn it down, or onto another station. It's a small request that should have been acknowledged. Obviously I am not that important of a customer. NJ has loads of breakfast places, and I will now drift out in search again. I went to this place about 25 years ago, and on a recent visit was very happy to see it still in operation. The corned beef is extremely tender, and I was not disappointed with my sandwich. I will come back on my next visit. The renovated dining room looks great. read more

Irv's is where I get my pastrami fix. I had ignored this place for many years while living here in Tinton Falls having no interest in what from the outside looked like a dive. (Hint guys: dress up your facade a bit, you deserve it.) One day I stopped there for breakfast at the advice of a fellow American Legion member and once I got inside I was greeted by a very friendly staff who fawned over me like I was family. I ordered eggs, potatoes and scrapple. Just the mere fact that they carry scrapple is points in their favor. I was not disappointed, the scrapple was cooked perfectly. A week or two later I took my wife there for lunch and given I was craving pastrami ordered the pastrami on rye. While it wouldn't cause me to forget about a NYC Jewish deli it was still superior pastrami cooked perfectly. John may not be the original owner but he is doing Irv's memory justice. My boyfriend and I are at the shore for a little vacation and went to get breakfast, we both got omelettes. They were delicious and the man who helped us was super nice! He made sure we left with everything we needed from jelly for our toast to the straws for our OJ. We took the food to go and it was still warm when we ate it. Let's be honest, the food isn't knock 'em dead amazing but the CHEAP prices + antics + hometown-vibe + waitresses non-maliciously trash-talking another staff member while also asking how you feel about said staff memeber and their inability to do their job makes up for the reg diner eats. Carmela's a little further used to be my go-to until they shut down after SO many years So this is my go-to spot when hanging with my dad. (He's always here.) Also, for perspective on price, our party of 4 spent $40 total on a big breakfast with OJ and coffee - so leave extra top for the waiters.
