I cannot sing enough praises for Island Kitchen. My only wish is that they would open one just like it in Manhattan where I live. My boyfriend and I went there for lunch and dinner yesterday while we were in Nantucket for the weekend. We had Fish and Chips and the Island Salad. F&C was the best I had tried on this side of the Atlantic. The Island Salad was very fresh, and the dressing had just the right blend of slightly sweet and tangy. But my especial accolades must be reserved for the mushroom cream soup and the grilled salmon entree. The former was intensely mushroomy rather than over-relying on cream that is the all too common fate of the mushroom cream soups of the world. Chef Donny was even gracious enough to impart his secrets of this soup to me so that I could try to make it myself at home. My boyfriend and I both loved this soup that much--the best cream of mushroom we had ever had! Thank you, Donny! The salmon entree came with a generous piece of salmon that was grilled to perfection, with crispy skin contrasted to the tender, succulent flesh of the fish. This lay on a potato latke that was seasoned to perfection, which itself lay on a mound of wilted baby spinach that melted in the mouth. Needless to say, we will return to Island Kitchen next time we are back in Nantucket. read more

Had breakfast here this morning because I was longing for their classic eggs Benedict. It is perfectly prepared - the eggs are poached just right, the English muffin is tender, but the hollandaise is the star. Absolutely wonderful. My husband had a toasted blueberry muffin, sausage, and yummy looking oatmeal. The service is excellent, but I keep thinking about the hollandaise! I give this place 3.5 stars. I would sum up my experience by saying that I wish I had entrees before appetizers because the entrees were disappointing, and the appetizers were in fact the center piece. Here is the food we requested: first, bread; second, appetizers: crispy calamari and warm goat cheese salad with vinaigrette; third, entrees: pan seared chicken and the salmon atop cous cous special. I'll start with what I did not like about the entrees. I think the chef tried to be creative with some classic food options. Unfortunately, this risk took a wrong turn. The pan seared chicken was liquefied with sauce, a creamy and sweet sauce that tasted remarkably similar to thousand island dressing. Yes sweet. It absolutely ruined the flavor of a pan seared chicken, in which much of the flavor is classically naturally derived from the skin and fat. The sweet cream not only masked the taste of the chicken, but drowned the chicken in its quest to conquer. It was so drenched that the chicken no longer seemed pan seared, but instead, boiled. It was the incongruity of the sweet flavor with something that was suppose to be savory that through me off. I understand there are instances in which sweet and chicken work very well together, but this was just a case of attempting to put out fire with oxygen; it just doesn't work. The salmon entree, an improvement. I like that it was wild caught and that it tasted clean with minimal seasoning/flavoring. Perfectly cooked, though I wish the skin was a little crispier. It came with a tempura tomato that was also perfectly fried. Biting through it was such a scrumptious mouth-watering experience. But all of this was accompanied by....yet....another.....sweet creamy thousand island dressing like dressing that drenched the cous cous. I only new this to be the case, because I couldn't stand the sweetness of my chicken and switched my entree with my friend's salmon entree, only to find that it too had gone sour, or should I say sweet? I question the generous use of of the sugar bowl and was hoping hard that it was a simple case of chefs confusing sugar for salt. I asked the waitress whether the use of this thousand island tasting sauce was deliberate. And indeed it was. Maybe people like their entrees slathered with sweet cream sauce., but for me it was unbearable. I could see this as a southern type of meal (only it wasn't a southern themed restaurant), but even then, the flavors just didn't work together to complement one another. When we commented that the entrees were too sweet for us, there was not even a simple apology or offer to send us something different (granted we were the last customers, so we wouldn't expect them to wait an addition hour for another set of dishes). Now the appetizers. They were classic items done correctly! Crispy calamari. It's so hard to make it just the right texture of crisp. Crispy, but not over battered. Brittle but not fragile. I wasn't a fan of the aioli sauce that came with it (seeing a pattern of sauce issues?). The sauce was simply not necessary. The warm goat cheese salad with vinaigrette was also spectacular. The cheese was somehow fried to the perfect texture. It was warm as per description but did not burn the palate. The sweet vinaigrette balanced the nutty flavor of deep fried goat cheese. This appetizer was a great example of ingredients and textures that go well together. The chefs can learn a lot from something so simple. Now the bread! That was some great garlic infused starter bread! If I haven't emphasized enough, the restaurant doesn't do well with rich sauces; it's not their forte. It's also not a big deal until the sauce seeps in and contaminates the rest of the entree. However, they are excellent at making minor things fantastic, take for example the appetizers, bread, and I forgot, the potatoes that came with my chicken. I hate potatoes, but how did they make them so well? Only the skin of the potato was superbly thinly crispy, and the core was a blissful memory. As a newish place, the chefs can learn from appropriate complement of flavors. At this point they are halfway through learning that less is precisely more. read more

Great service! The "Huevos Rancheros" however are the worst example of canned ingredients dropped on a plate and nuked I've ever tried.

Went to have dinner with a big group of friends after having a glass of wine and were joking around with each other before being seated. The waitress decided that we were "too drunk" and wouldn't serve us a glass of wine. She then accused of smelling like alcohol even though we had barely been around alcohol. When se realized her mistake, she brought us the alcohol and tried to suck up to us all dinner. She ended the night by recommending that we run over the liquor store across the street before it closed so that we could have alcohol to stand in line with at the Chicken Box. Overall, a very weird and insulting experience. Very poor customer service. read more

Great service, great food. Was there in September when there was no crowd so I'm not sure how well my experience translates to the busy season but of the top three breakfast places on the island (Fog Island, Black Eyed Susan's and Island Kitchen), I liked this the best. read more

We had brunch here and it was very good. The smoked haddock was amazing and my whole family wanted to steal it from my plate. Everyone liked their food. I am only taking off a star because the server was a bit slow and the outside patio is cramped. But otherwise - this is a really genuinely good place. read more

I give the **breakfast** a 5 stars. And of course the delicious ice cream! However, when I arrived here for breakfast at 10:45 am there was a wait. Understandable of course and it was only supposed to be 15-20 minutes they said. When it was 11:15 I finally had the courage to ask the hostess when in fact my table might be ready. They said "5 more minutes". I waited patiently and when the five minutes were over I got my table as expected. Mind you it took 35 minutes! Me and three more of my friends sat down excited to order finally. It was not until maybe 8 minutes later that our waitress finally came over refreshing us with some water. We were grateful and asked to put in our breakfast order. After we put it in, we had to wait a solid 40 minutes for our food to come. Regardless the food was great as always but I would not recommend coming here if you need to be somewhere that day. The service is bad but the food certainly makes up for it. read more

We have been coming to Nantucket for almost 20 years, decided to try Island Kitchen for dinner when we heard that our favorite Nantucket bartender "Selena" is now working there. All of the staff, including Chef Patrick, were friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar where you can watch everyone working hard in the open kitchen. We started with the Peach Cosmos, not overly sweet ( nice job Selena! ) and the steamer clams, clean and very sweet and a Bartlett Farm tomato and cheese salad. For entrees we choose the Lobster dinner, a good sized steamed lobster with corn and roasted potatoes- price $28!! The Striped Bass was a special, prepared with seasonal vegetables and a pesto cream. There was enough left over for dinner the next night! A crisp Sauvignon Blanc and crunchy focaccia bread rounded the meal out perfectly. No room for dessert- this time! So don't overlook this mid island gem, unless you aren't interested in a warm welcoming atmosphere, a satisfying, reasonably priced meal with parking! read more
