We hit up Island Taco after visiting and hiking Waimea canyon... This is a small Taco Joint where you put your order in with the friendly cashier, and they bring your plates to the picnic tables situated directly outside the grill. Of course the Kauai chickens are hanging out waiting for your food as well. Be cautious of your plates and don't leave them unattended and you're all good. Our group was super hungry and I went with the Classic Burrito. It came with 3 small scoops of rice and some beans on the side. Everything the plate was tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed my dish. The portions were on the smaller side or maybe I was just super hungry. I wanted more on plate. lol My friends all enjoyed their fish tacos. Really yum. One of our favorite meals while on vacation. We came hungry after exploring Waimea Canyon. The woman at the cashier did it all, she was friendly, gave good recommendations, all while delivering all the dishes to everyone's table. We loved both the wasabi ahi tuna taco and Cajun shrimp taco. The wasabi was unique, in that it wasn't spicy, and even my toddler liked it. You can tell everything is homemade, the chips that came with the tacos were the best! We can't wait to come back next time we're in Kauai! read more

The boys were kind of nervous on this one but we knew it would not disappoint. The little guy had a cheese quesadilla which you can't really mess that up, right?! He ate almost all of it which is a really big deal for him!! The medium fella went with the chicken enchiladas that were very tasty. The big guy chose fish tacos and he was very pleased. My husband went with shrimp tacos. I chose the pork tacos and they were everything we remembered! So tasty! It was a pretty quick turnaround on the order. We enjoy the picnic tables outside. Drove by this Taco spot so many times and always see the sign "Best Tacos in Hawaii" but never stopped till today. I was in the mood for Mexican and passed on the Tacos but got the Teri Chicken Burrito instead. I was very happy with my choice and the plate was delicious. The Burrito and sauce was superb and the beans and rice was a great combination of flavor and spice. They always seem to have a line but the service is really quick. We stopped here on our way back from Waimea Canyon. They are prefectly located at the point where one comes back to ground level and as a result they are busy. To eat there they have about 6 tables and so cycle thro these tables. They take your order once a table comes free and this allows you to wait for about 15-20 minutes. Teh others can wait :), they are on a holiday anyway. There is a shrimp station accross that they can go to , if they cant wait. The food is great at Island Taco. Fresh and delicious. I had teh tofu taco with the spicy sauce. They were gone in no time. They have veg only options which include the rice and beans. Im not sure if they are less busy at other times but lunch time is busy . Great place and nice service. read more

We stopped by here after visiting the State Park. The line was long and they had a few workers working. However, once we ordered, our order came out pretty fast! I got a classic burrito and it was very delicious. We also. ordered extra chips. The taco is huge, did not get to try but it looked delicious. A great little stand to stop at for lunch if you're passing through! We were returning home from our Ne Pali coast boat tour and needed a place to eat. Island taco came as a recommendation from our boat guide (born and raised on the island). The town of Waimea may seem like a sleep pass by town on the way to an activity but the food here is for real and this place is a reflection of that. When we arrived the line was out the door. Took about 15 minutes to get to the front but I'm really glad we stuck it out. Each taco (one for flour two for corn) comes with chips and salsa. Seeing the other flour tortillas around we felt you got more out of the corn tortillas because they stuff all of them as full as you can get. This place also offers more seating than other nearby joints so it's a great place if you're looking to sit down for a bit. Kalua pork tacos: The pork was tender it was dripping through the tortillas and the slaw added a nice crunch. Well worth getting and would stop again for these! 9/10. read more

Despite their sign that claims they were voted the "best tacos on the island", Island Taco was pretty mediocre. We stopped in for a quick lunch after exploring Waimea Canyon State Park, and stood in line to place our order. They have cones with funny signage on them to keep you entertained while you wait, which I thought was a cute touch. The place is pretty tiny so there's no indoor seating, but they had plenty of picnic tables right outside. For food, I ordered the Ahi Cajun Tacos, which unfortunately fell really short for me - very bland tacos and I didn't like the salsa on the side either. My friends said the same of the Seared Wasabi Ahi Tacos, but that the Kalua Pork Tacos were slightly better. The best dish of the bunch was probably the Classic Burrito, but it sadly wasn't anything special. Even with the convenient location, I don't think I would return. read more

Loved the vegetarian options here! My brother and I will be dreaming about their garlic salsa for a long time to come. After a hike up in the canyon, we stopped here hungry and sweaty. Cold drinks, deep-fried chips and house-made garlicky salsa started us off - then a big soft taco with cilantro-sauced tofu and rice. So good! On our way to some touristy places we stopped by this inconspicuous little restaurant. Probably the best fish taco I've ever had. The flour taco was nice and crispy, the aioli was ooosoo good. The fish was clearly seared and the fish tasted so fresh. The slaw it came with was nice and crunchy and the sauce was so thick and creamy. Lady at the counter was clearly local and really made us feel at home. Super friendly, she even brought the plates to us. She seemed to be working by herself (aside from those at the back) but she was super efficient - give that woman a raise! Place was super good. Would totally go back. read more

Well first off the prices of the food is absolutely crazy...!!!l the tacos such as the mahi mahi lacking in flavor. Only thing that was actually decent was the chips and salsa but tacos was over filled with cabbage and maybe 4 pieces of meat in a huge taco shell...the service was less then reasonable like she was having a horrible day and just hated her job and the people she was serving....and the seating was just no there was so much people there that we couldn't sit..which idk why there was so many people because if I wanted a cabbage taco this would be the place to go...I took one bite and tossed it out and went to tiki tacos instead next to Waimea big save. read more

This restaurant was someplace we came upon during our tour of the Waimea canyon. It was a tiny place so I wasn't expecting much but I was totally surprised and pleased with the excellent food and service from the woman taking the orders. We had the Cajun fish taco and the wasabi fish taco and both were excellent. We have eaten at some of the finest restaurants on the island and the food from Island Taco could compete with any of these places. I realize this sounds odd but it was true in our case. There is limited seating so you may end up taking your food to go so be prepared for that. The lines can get long when the tourist busses arrive but the friendly woman at the counter is a real pro and processed the orders quickly and efficiently. We highly recommend Island Taco. read more

5th Place - 2022 Kauai Fish Taco Throwdown I really wanted to like this fish taco but sometimes innovation doesn't end up better, at least for me. I know it has it's following, and the staff and venue are great, but food taste is subjective and it didn't work for me. What really didn't work for me was the white rice under the fish. The sautéed cabbage was ok but not as good as a well executed fresh slaw. All that said, if you want a fish taco in Waimea, check it out. An unassuming place on the side of the road in Waimea , you definitely should stop before or after your trip up to see the canyon. Lots of local flavor. Island Taco is a great small restaurant in Waimea Town and has wonderful menu items. I stayed in Waimea Town for 2 days and nights and was there mostly for the Na Pali Coast boat tour and this one of the few restaurants and eateries in this particular area of Kaua'i. Had their taco salad and opted to add tofu as the protein and it was delicious and portions were excellent overall. Totally worth the price as well and I happened to arrive during a time when it was not busy at all; probably took only about 10 minutes to get my order prepared. There is also on-site seating available and it's right next door to one of the small independently owned gift shops. read more
