Do not skip the Happy Hour here at Islands -- it is one of my favorites in Huntington Beach, with a seven day happy hour that doesn't end until 6:30pm (plenty of time to get there after work). I'm a big fan of the happy hour burger sliders, which comes with three. The sliders are loaded with grilled onions AND crispy onions (5 out of 5). They have some great drink flights and a margarita of the month, which is fun to try. And their beer mugs come in a frosty cold glass. The vibe is very tropical, with surfing videos playing throughout the restaurant. I'm a sucker for a good theme. Went to Islands Restaurant on a Wednesday evening and luckily it wasn't busy, so we got a table right away. The place is always nice and I like being able to watch sports on the TVs. The casual ambiance also gives off a relaxed, tropical vibe that almost makes you feel like you are in the islands. The staff is friendly and comes by often for refills. I got my usual, the Hula Burger, which is one of my favorite mushroom burgers of all time. It had a good amount of mushrooms and was delicious. I paired it with a side garden salad and bleu cheese dressing. Everything was great as usual. It was also nice using the $20 discount I earned through their rewards points. It definitely helps. Not what we expected from our past experiences at Islands...very disappointed. But still enjoyed the chill vibe and tranquil atmosphere. Food is ALWAYS flavorful and fresh, however, when it came to my Yaki tacos I could barely see any cheese on them and being that there were limited ingredients on my custom order it was disappointing (however, they still pleased my tastebuds). I only ate 1 of the 3 because Islands has this brownie/ice cream dessert that is a one-of-a-kind and I was saving precious calories for that delicious treat! Crislyn was initially fun, friendly and on top of it as a server until it came to the end when she brought out to-go containers and the check without asking if we wanted dessert and then literally just STOOD THERE for my husband to sign it (and with my eye contact across the table saying forget the dessert because I was bothered by the whole end process at that point) knew to just sign the check. Crislyn literally continued to STAND THERE while my husband signed it (which I can't remember any server ever doing in all my dining experiences). I have been going to Islands for over a decade so I'm only going to count this as one unsatisfactory dining experience unless I begin to have continued similar experiences from this point forward. We came here tonight and tried their new drinks the tropical sodas (I think they were called?). We got the strawberry one and the prickly pear one. They had WAY too much ice and had too little soda, we literally took two sips of the drink and the rest was ice. It was very disappointing! We haven't been to this Islands Restaurant in ages. Being near Bella Terra was a good opportunity for the three of us to check out happy hour specials. Our server was Savannah and she was friendly and attentive. Starting out with an appetizer like the Chips with Spinach Dip got us started. The grand daughter got the big Hula Burger and upgraded to a side of Ceasars Salad. The lovely missus orders the special Happy Hour Sliders and added Cheddar Cheese. She looked for the cheese... it was maybe buried under a heavy load of brown strings of fried onions... she did eat two of the three and asked for a to- go container. My big plate of the Kaanapali Cobb Salad was a picture perfect presentation. A marvel of bits of tasty particles and sliced chicken for protein on a heaping amount of greens made this Salad a full meal. Happy hour is also for smooth and cold draft beer. The atmosphere was typical bar noise but the overhead monitors had a good showing of skiing and surfing by daredevils. Islands was otherwise a welcoming Happy Hour experience. read more

I hadn't been to an Islands in a while, but was looking for a fun Saturday splurge. It was honestly a "let's drive around and see what we can find" decision. Luckily, they weren't super busy on a Saturday at 5:30 pm, and we were seated immediately. They might have been short-staffed on servers because it took several minutes for someone to come and take our order. I understand that restaurants want to take a drink and appetizer order first, but as we get older, we're usually ready to order. I don't know why most servers are surprised when we decline appetizers and are prepared to order. My dining partner decided he just wanted a big plate of nachos, and I was going to get a hamburger. I specifically said that my partners' nachos were going to be their main course, so we were surprised when the nachos came out right away, and my burger took another 10 minutes. Always makes eating a little awkward. Luckily, the food was delicious. My burger was cooked perfectly to my liking, and the nachos served as a satisfying main course. We tried a Lemon Freeze, not sure what to expect. The description is a "Frozen lemonade blended with a touch of vanilla milkshake". It felt more like a Vanilla milkshake with some lemon flavoring, but it wasn't bad as a sweet treat. Our only other issue was that we had to deal with a few flies. They seemed drawn to the nachos. It was humid that day, which always seems to bring them out, but it was still annoying. Sometime during our meal, they seemed to disappear, though. I like how the servers bring a machine to scan your credit card when you're ready to pay, and they don't have to run off to swipe it. In the end, and most importantly, we left full and satisfied. read more

Even though it's a chain, I like Islands and I don't get there often enough. I love to have the lava flow cocktail (not this visit though) and to sit outside. This visit I had the kalua pork tacos, which was a serving of 3, generously filled with pork, cabbage, and avocado; and served with a couple of lime wedges - delicious! My husband had the cheeseburger and fries. I love sharing a fresh order of hot fries and these were yummy! Service was fine but nothing special and at least our server was friendly. My Neice and nephew were visiting from out of town and wanted burgers so we came in for lunch. We arrived around 1:15 and were seated right away. Tara greeted us shortly after we were seated and my nephew let her know that he had a severe peanut allergy. Tara went above and beyond in ensuring my nephew had a safe meal. Her manager came over and printed off a menu that showed which items had peanuts in them so that my nephew could make his lunch selection. Once the meals arrived the manager personally walked his food out wearing gloves. She included plastic cutlery and ramekins ensuring that there was no cross contamination. The attention to detail was above and beyond and we were very grateful. Tara did a great job checking back in with us, refilling drinks, and was a ray of sunshine! We will absolutely be back! Wow! For lunch islands is a real value play!! They have a lunch specials menu, which includes an entrée such as hamburger or BLT with fries for only $10-$12 add a drink for only $2.19 more! Same good food and great service! I had the Wedge (BLT) and it was its normal fantastic self. Differs from a regular BLT in that it is on a bun and it has melted cheddar on top of the bacon. I love the passion iced tea, which they refilled five times! I have always liked the island/surfer vibe inside. Came by recently and sat on the patio with my family , our server was Trevor if I'm remembering his name correctly. He was friendly. We did have multiple hiccups with our orders but our server handled things nicely so I appreciate his help. For example, my husband ordered a plain hamburger with only ketchup , lettuce and jalapeno , when his burger arrived there was everything on it and no jalapeno. When I took a bite of my burger it appears I was given his jalapeños and ketchup when my burger was supposed to have different sauce and no jalapeno. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup as my side , I was given a fork with it. I asked for a spoon of course and by the time we were checked on again it was the end of our meal and I still didn't receive a fork. So there's ways this location could improve of course. We dined in on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was semi-busy, no wait to be seated. We got sat in a booth by the host booth. The booths are roomy enough to add our baby booster chair with enough distance from the table. I ordered the Hawaiian Burger with onion rings, husband ordered the Malibu burger with fries, and we ordered mac & Cheese with a side of fresh pineapple. The burgers and fries were delicious. The mac & cheese was out of a box and not cheesy, our toddler was not a fan. The onion rings weren't firm and the batter was falling off before dipping them in ranch. Our waiter was really nice and attentive. We asked for burger knives and a wet nap and he returned quickly. I brought my family out for a Friday night dinner and it was super busy, but surprisingly we got sat super quick. Our server was Ethan and he was super attentive and suggested the Tropical Flight for the drink and the Kilauea burger for our entree and it did not disappoint. After a beach day we scoped a nearby place to eat and settled on Islands, where I haven't been for years to have a burger, and frankly the last several times I went I felt disappointed at lackluster food quality. But why not, I'm sentimental so decided to give it another shot. Got seated immediately, server checked on us aplenty although didn't pay attention to drink refills for some reason. But onto the food. A Pipeline burger for me (wheat bun, with chili) was such a perfect throwback to my early days going to Islands, circa 1991-92 in Marina Del Rey. It was perfectly medium rare, chili tasted exactly the same, veggies piled high and fresh. I could taste the chili and mustard and was in my happy place. I subbed onion rings which I was so glad to Have done, some of the best in recent memory, we devoured them all. Pro tip for next time: get the onion rings. Malibu burger was enjoyed (kids liked the bacon too), as well as Beach Bowl with teriyaki on the side: very hearty with nice grilled chicken and lots of veggies like broccoli and other things that the boys liked. We shared the fries, which also had a good throwback quality. I've eaten many baskets of their fries in my lifetime; I remember until the 2000s at some point they did away with "endless fries" which was part of the appeal. Hey Islands bring 'em back!! The last few times I'd been to other Islands locations I was disappointed but this location and the food quality restored my faith! Family friendly, delicious, I'm not gonna say cheap bc a burger is $17-20 which is a bit much...but their burgers always were more expensive that other places. I have been a fan of the island's restaurant for a long time and I enjoy the food very much especially the lunch specials e.g. Salads and no doubt the hamburgers but one thing that really makes me go there so often is the service and the quality of people who work there. Special shout-out to Kasey she is a bartender and extremely knowledgeable and friendly soul you will ever meet so if you are in the Bellaterra area go and have a meal at Islands and sit by the bar area and ask for Kasey I promise you ain't gonna be disappointed. Talking about the selection of the staff the credit goes to the GM Monica excellent person to work with she is very friendly and she checks on customers as well and that's impressive. For a small Cesar salad ($8) that looks the size of a normal side salad. I added chicken ($5.49). I also got a Kona pie that use to be big enough for 3-4 people to share. I've been wanting one for a while. Ordered it, $10. I got the desert and it's less the half the size it use to be...(for 1 person) for the same price it's been. Yah pretty upset. Never going back. My son and I ate here for lunch yesterday. Food and service are good. I've liked Islands in HB. But this is the first time I noticed uncleanliness. As we were waiting for our food, I started scanning the place, I looked up at the beams and saw dirt. The beams are super dirty! Dirt can fall into food while customers eat and on customers themselves!! Especially when those ceiling fans are turned on. Just came here for their newly advertised Tropical Flights and this was literally the best flights I have had overall all the other ones I've had here and in Vegas!!!! The glasses were the perfect size and the flavors were just so delicious. I was actually expecting my friend to help me finish them but he didn't need to because I loved all of them!!!! It was pretty large, and the fries were very generous. I was very full and we still had fries left over. The burger maui burger was a sweet and savory sensation. I also loved the sauce that was included. The huli huli crisp was also very delicious. It's probably our favorite. It also comes with a sauce which my wife always gets extra. 3 of us ordered the teriyaki burger and they were all a sloppy mess. The kids didn't mind as much as I did, but when a burger literally falls apart in your hands that's when it's a fail in my view.
