The old grey haired man that works there is a real weirdo and I would proceed with caution before ever eating there. He was not only rude and very creepy but also doesn't even come close to following health and safety laws. I ordered fries and watched him grab them bare handed to put them in the bag after I watched him taking the trash bag out of the trash. I asked him to please follow health and safety laws and use gloves and remake them. He refused. So I asked for a refund. Then yelled at me about how I was somehow in the wrong for not wanting a stranger to touch my food with bare hands after I watched him touch the trash and not wash his hands. He then threw my money at me after aruing about refunding my order and very aggressively slammed my food in the trash.. but if there was nothing wrong with the food or the way it was handled then why not just toss the fries back into the batch...? So clearly he knew he was wrong. He Then proceeded to follow me to the restroom and wait out side until I was done like some sort of creepy weirdo telling me restroom are for customers only and I had to ask permission before using them(when there is no lock or sign saying please ask permission first..it's a very public bathroom) and he literally just watched me order food that he handled in an unsafe illegal way. So I was a paying customer but asked for my money back cuz I don't want to eat food made my someone who had dirt all over their hands then touched my food without gloves ... then screamed at me in a restaurant full of people because he was mad that I asked for my $5 back... such a strange way to treat customers but I will definitely NOT be going back if that's the way they treat customers or the food that they serve. He says "sounds intriguing!". 3 minutes later we stroll in and we both break into big grins. This is our kind of place. I quickly settled on the gyro with onion rings. He went for the fried chicken sandwich with the fried zucchini. This place is a classic Hamburger "joint". We love it! The food is great. I always eat here. I even recommend the food for people who like a fantastic burger. However, tonight, the owner or whomever the grey haired man is with glasses disciplined and scolded his employee in front of customers. It looks like the owner messed up an order and was confused and asked the younger Hispanic guy what was wrong. He tried telling the younger guy he screwed up and the younger guy said no...and then asked the customer "Who took your order," and she pointed at the owner. It doesn't matter who screwed up the order. You talk about it in private and you never yell at your employees out loud for other patrons to hear. I can only count on one hand how many times I've been here and I recall them closing for some time during or after COVID, however, I met some friends here today for breakfast. An omelet, hash browns, a breakfast sandwich (that looked incredible) and I had a "mixed" (meat) breakfast burrito. I'm on a breakfast burrito kick right now and Steve's has a version that has a great mix of ingredients... NOT an excessive amount of potato which some places do as a filler. I'd order this again in a heartbeat. It was delicious even though I could only eat half. With that said, ~$5 for each half is a very reasonably priced meal for me. The salsa they provided was SUPER spicy, but the spice didn't linger, so it turned out I loved it and asked for another container "to go" for my other half. The coffee was exceptional and I love that it's self serve so you just jump up to get more whenever you're ready! The staff was friendly. While the food is average . The breakfast coffee cups are about four or five ounces and at three dollars with a limit of two cups per customer. Starbucks for a little over three dollars for twenty ounces is a far better deal and a superior product . No hot water in the restrooms and a lack of cleanliness is also a detractor . Recently I purchased the window banner advertised hamburger special at $ 9.99 yet later on when checking out my receipt I noticed that I paid $13.59 instead of the $11.00 or so it should have been . I don't know if this is the new norm for Steve's, but yesterday I stopped in to pick up fries for kids and the fries were an absolute FAILURE. I called in my order of 2 x Large fries in advance so they had plenty of time to prepare my order. I went to pick up the order and it wasn't ready. I was ok to wait if needed. I was handed a bag and it was so small I actually asked the guy TWICE if it was an order for 2 LARGE fries. The fries did not even fill the 2 yellow envelopes in the bag. I was like no problem I'll just call them we eat here once a week they will fix this for us. Nope I was wrong. This place is on the way from the beach to the 405 and it's worth a visit. I got the double cheeseburger and split a large fries. The burger hit the spot! My mom and I went to have breakfast this morning and had a bad experience. Once we were ordering food we quickly got a bad whiff of a bad smell, we couldn't figure out where was it coming from until we heard a vacuum coming from back of the kitchen area. We got our food within 10 minutes (which was very quick) once I began eating my food the bad odor just kept getting worse and worse. I asked one of the ladies where the smell was coming from and she just looked at me and said "the boss is doing something in the back". I ended up not eating anything and me and my mom left the place unhappy. The owner should know that it's never a good idea to "clean up" and stink up the whole place while other people are trying to enjoy their lunch. I heard from a customer that was eating beside me that the owner likes to be at the cashier and always messes up orders and argues with the staff and customers. I always come in the afternoon to have a burger with my family and I have NEVER had any issue with the other staff but the owner always seems to not get it right. Sounds to me that owner needs to hire a REAL cashier and stick to his paperwork..... so sad to see what my favorite childhood restaurant has become. read more
